♣ CHAPTER 14 ♣

Kate didn’t sleep that night. Her mind kept spinning, replaying every word from their argument. She didn’t regret what she said. But something inside her has changed. The way William had looked at her. It was Cold and Empty. It was Like nothing she said mattered.

The next morning, she walked into the dining room. He was already there, sipping coffee like everything was normal.

She sat down. “We need to talk.”

He didn’t look at her. “About what?”

“About this,” she said. “About you. About the way you treat me.”

He placed the cup down. “You’re angry. I understand.”

“No. You don’t,” Kate said, her voice rising. “You think you do, but you don’t understand anything about me.”

He raised a brow. “Then enlighten me.”

Kate leaned forward. “Why are you like this, William? Why do you act like you hate me?”

He didn’t answer.

She kept talking. “You married me. You dragged me into your world. And now you punish me every day for being here.”

“This marriage was a deal,” he said sharply.

♣ CHAPTER 40 ♣"Lucas, you can't just keep acting like I don't have a voice!" Rachelle shouted, tossing her purse onto the couch. Her heels clacked as she paced the living room.Lucas stood by the window, arms folded, jaw clenched. "You embarrassed me in front of everyone, Rachelle. That nonsense you pulled at the Dray's mansion was childish.""Childish? I was being honest! Kate is a problem. She doesn't belong with William. She's messing everything up.""You don’t even know her! You only hate her because she doesn’t kiss your ass like the rest of them."Rachelle turned sharply. "I hate her because she changed you. You think I don't see it? You defend her more than you ever defended me."Lucas walked past her, grabbing a glass of water. "Because you keep picking fights where there aren't any. She's not the enemy.""Then who is, Lucas? Me? Because it feels like you treat me like the problem in your life.""Maybe you are," he said quietly. The words hit her like a slap. She froze. "What

♣ CHAPTER 39 ♣Inside a grand living room lined with gold-framed paintings and white curtains dancing from the early breeze, Mr. Carlos paced back and forth, phone clutched in his hand. His wife, Ciara, sat on the couch, legs crossed, sipping coffee with a worried expression.“Still not picking up?” she asked softly.“No,” he snapped, glaring at the screen. “It’s been hours, Ciara. Raymond never takes this long to respond. Never.”Ciara set the cup down. “Maybe he’s lying low. Maybe he’s just—”“Don’t defend him!” Carlos growled. “Not after what I told him to do. Not after how deep we are in.”Ciara stood up slowly. “You’re shouting again.”He turned to her. “I have every right to shout. Do you know how much money we’ve tied up in that fake investment? Do you know what happens if the Jones Corp board finds out?”Ciara’s eyes darkened. “And whose idea was it to use company money for a secret plan? Yours. Don’t drag me into this.”Carlos walked closer. “Raymond—no—Clark, that’s his real

♣ CHAPTER 38 ♣Tina sat across from Raymond, her hands wrapped around the wine glass. The restaurant was quiet, dim lights hanging low, and only two other couples were scattered in the far corners. Raymond raised a brow.“Why here?” he asked, looking around.Tina gave a small smile. “I just wanted something quiet. No noise. No distractions. Just us.”He leaned back in his seat, suspicious. “But you hate quiet places.”“I’ve changed,” she said. “Maybe I just want to know the man I’m dating. Deeply.”Raymond narrowed his eyes. “You’re acting strange, Tina.”“I’m not,” she replied softly. “Can’t we just talk? For once, like normal people.”Raymond leaned forward. “Okay. Let’s talk. What exactly do you want to know?”She bit her lip, her fingers tapping the edge of the glass. “Where are you really from, Raymond?”He paused. “You already know I grew up in Houston.”She shook her head. “No. I want the truth. The full truth.”Raymond’s eyes darkened. “Why now?”Tina’s smile faded. “Because s

♣ CHAPTER 37 ♣Liam and Tina sat quietly at the small table. The air between them was heavy. Liam leaned forward slowly.“Tina, do you have a picture of Raymond?”Tina frowned. “Why?”“Just show me. Please,” Liam said. She reached into her phone, opened her gallery, and tapped a photo. She turned it to face him. Liam stared at it for a long second. His heart skipped.“No,” he whispered.“What?” Tina asked.“This... this is Clark,” Liam said.Tina blinked. “What are you talking about?”Liam grabbed the phone. “Tina, this is not Raymond. His real name is Clark. He changed his identity. This is the same man William’s been hunting for years.”Tina’s mouth parted. “What? You’re joking.”“I wish I was,” Liam said. “But this is him. This is the bastard who tried to ruin William’s family. And now… he’s using you.”“No,” Tina said slowly. “He wouldn’t…”“He would,” Liam snapped. “He’s smart. He’s dangerous. And he’s playing a long game. You said he’s been acting strange. Disappearing. Taking c

Not even once.”Tina looked away, then back. “You’re right. You haven’t.”“So who is he really?” Liam pressed.“I’ll tell you,” she said, “just not now. I need to figure out something first.”“Tina,” Liam said slowly, “if there’s something I should know—”“I said I’ll tell you, Liam,” she cut in, not harsh but firm. “Just trust me.”Liam nodded. “Alright. I trust you. But please… don’t keep me in the dark for too long.”“I won’t,” she said softly.---Later that day, in the private lounge upstairs in William’s company, Kate leaned over a file on the desk. "You missed me?"Kate crossed her arms. "Don’t flatter yourself. I’ve been stuck in a hospital room for a week. I would’ve even missed Carlos."William raised a brow. "Careful. That man wants you dead."She leaned closer. "Then tell me why. Tell me what really happened to my parents."William went still.Kate saw it. His jaw tensed."I’m serious," she said. "No more lies."William walked to the fridge, opened it, didn’t take anything, then closed it again."They were killed," he said, voice low.Kate’s heart dropp

It clicked into place. He wiped the sweat off his face, stood, and dialed a number.“It’s done,” he whispered.A deep voice answered, “You made sure the brakes will fail?”“Yes, boss. One stop and they’ll snap.”“Good. Now disappear. If she survives, you know what to do next.”The man nodded, even though the caller couldn’t see him. “She won’t survive.”The line went dead.---Two hours later, Kate walked toward her car, holding her bag and a coffee cup.“Ma’am, are you sure you don’t want the driver to take you?” her assistant called from the entrance.Kate smiled. “No. I need to clear my head. Time for Plan B.”Carlos grunted. “She’s getting bold. The board listens to her now. She’s even cleaning up my mess.”The man chuckled low. “Then it’s time to make a bigger mess.”“Go ahead,” Carlos said. “What do you need from me?”“Silence. I’ll handle everything. But when it’s done, you better keep your promise.”“You’ll get your money. And a seat on the board.”The man smirked. “Good. Tell your girl to stay out of my way.
