Chapter 7

Author: Gu Lingfei
Zachary got into the Rolls-Royce and instructed in a husky voice, “Don’t forget to bring around the national car I bought.”

It was a façade to fool his wife. What was his wife called again?

“Oh, right. What’s the name of the missus again?”

Zachary could not be bothered to dig out the marriage license. Oh, it was likely Nana did not return it to him after he showed her. Anyhow, the marriage license was not with him.

The bodyguard replied, “… The young missus is Serenity Hunt. She’s twenty-five this year. You might want to remember that.”

Mr. Zachary had an exceptional memory, but when it came to people who he was not fond of, he jammed them out.

This was especially true with women. He probably would not know the lady’s name even if they met every day.

“Sure. Got it.”

Zachary responded offhandedly.

Judging by Zachary’s tone, the bodyguard knew he would not be bothered to learn the young missus’ name.

Refusing to waste more brain cells on Serenity, Zachary slumped against the seat and rested his eyes.

The journey from Wiltspoon Hotel to Brynfield took ten minutes.

With the luxury sedan convoy stopping at the neighborhood gate, Zachary proceeded to drive the national MPV into the neighborhood.

Although he could not remember his bride’s name, Zachary was not going to forget about the property he bought.

Soon, he arrived at the entrance to his home and took notice of a pair of familiar slippers at the door. They seemed to be his.

Why were they thrown out?

It must be Serenity!

Doing a slow burn, Zachary scrunched up his chiseled face. He was grateful to the girl for saving Nana at first, but all that good impression was lost following Nana’s constant praising of her and nagging to marry her.

Now Zachary believed Serenity was a conniving person.

Although he gave in to Nana to marry Serenity in the end, Zachary drew the line there. He planned to keep his identity hidden after marriage to be the judge of Serenity’s character. If Serenity passed the test, he would accept her as his wife forever.

If he were to find out that she was a scheming woman, then she should get what was coming.

No good ever came to those who played games with Zachary.

Whipping out his keys, Zachary tried to unlock the door, but his attempt was futile. He was less than happy when he realized that the woman had locked him out.

This was his house!

He let her in, and yet she locked her out!

Seeing red, Zachary lifted his foot and kicked the door. Bang!

Zachary was also trying to get Serenity on the phone.

Because of the earlier incident, Zachary saved Serenity’s contact and added the spousal title as a reminder. Otherwise, it was likely that he would delete Serenity’s contact once more as he had trouble putting a face to her name.

Serenity was startled awake by the kick on the door.

Who was pounding the door in the middle of the night? How was she supposed to sleep?

Serenity was a grump in the morning, not to mention now that she was woken up by the noise. Throwing off the covers, Serenity stormed out in her pajamas.

Since her phone was in the room, she had no idea that Zachary called.

“Who is it? Why are you knocking on my door when you should be sleeping?”

Serenity opened the door as she ran her mouth at the guy standing outside. She was stumped the moment she got a good look at the person’s face. Serenity stared at Zachary’s face for a while before getting ahold of herself and putting on a smiling face. She embarrassedly uttered, “Oh, it’s you, Mr. York.”

Zachary’s rage was already at an all-time high as she did not pick up his call.

Brushing Serenity off, Zachary walked past her and entered the house with a sour face.

Serenity stuck her tongue out behind his back.

This was the aftereffect of marrying at first sight.

She popped her head out the door to look. It was a good thing the neighbors were not awakened by Zachary’s vigorous slamming.

Spotting the slippers by the door, Serenity bent over to put them back inside the house before locking the door behind her.

“I got home at midnight. I thought you wouldn’t be coming back since you weren’t home by then. That’s why I locked the door.”

Serenity explained.

“I was alone at home, so I thought I should put your slippers at the door just to be safe. People will know there’s a man in the house if they see a man’s slippers. They wouldn’t dare try anything.”

No bad guys scared Serenity as she practiced self-defense. Nevertheless, it did not stop Serenity from putting home safety measures into place.

Sitting on the sofa, Zachary stared icily at her with dead-pan yet penetrating eyes.

The nights in October were chilly, to begin with. Not only did Serenity feel the chill from his piercing glare, but it also felt like winter was brought forward. It was freezing!

“I’m sorry, Mr. York.”

Serenity brought his slippers over and placed them by his feet while apologizing.

She should have called to ask if he was coming back.

It took a while before Zachary coldly blurted, “I said not to mind me, but this is my home. I’m not happy that you locked me out.”

“I’m sorry, Mr. York. I’m sorry. Next time, I’ll call in advance to check if you’re coming back. I’ll lock the door if you have no plans to return.”

After a brief silence, Zachary uttered, “I’ll inform you when I’m going on business trips. I’ll be home every day unless I tell you otherwise. Don’t call me. I’m a busy man. I don’t have time to take your tiresome calls.”

“Oh,” Serenity answered.

He could have the last say since this was his place anyway.

He was the boss.

“Mr. York, do you want any supper?”

Since Zachary worked until late, Serenity thought he must be hungry. Hence, she asked out of kindness.

“I don’t have a habit of midnight snacking.”

Everyone said that Wildridge Manor was more beautiful than any scenic spot in Wiltspoon.Lana really wanted to visit Wildridge Manor, partly to test whether Trenton felt anything special for her.Wildridge Manor was the Yorks’ ancestral home and was naturally not open to the public. For an outsider to be able to visit it once would be something to boast about for a long time.If Trenton agreed to take her to visit Wildridge Manor, it meant he trusted her deeply, and she held an important place in his heart—that meant he had to have feelings for her.Trenton might have seemed like a very warm and gentle person, but in reality, he was guarded toward everyone. There was an invisible wall between himself and others that he rarely allowed anyone to cross.Lana understood him, knowing that his guarded nature stemmed from his tragic family history, making him reluctant to trust anyone easily.Over the years she had known him, many girls had admired and pursued him, but no one had ever b

“It’s okay, I was asking too much.”Lana was a little disappointed, but she understood. If she were in Camryn’s shoes, she would refuse a complete stranger she did not know or understand who asked to visit her home, either.“Lana, are you free tonight? I’ll treat you to dinner to make it up to you.”Trenton felt guilty for not being able to fulfill Lana’s first request, so he wanted to treat her to dinner. He also wanted to test whether Lana had any feelings for him.“It was an unreasonable ask anyway. You don’t have to feel guilty or make it up to me. I’d be happy to go out to dinner with you, though. Are you picking me up later, or should I call an Uber?”Lana did not own a car. She usually took the subway to work because it was convenient and she could avoid traffic jams.Wiltspoon was a big city, and during rush hour, the traffic was absolutely terrible.Lana’s apartment was close to the subway station, so she took the subway to work, which was quick and convenient.“I’ll

After a moment of silence, Camryn said, “She might be my biological mother, and we are quite similar, but she never saw me as her daughter. What little love I had for her gradually disappeared as she abused me.”As a child, Camryn longed for her mother's love. Her mother, however, did not like her, did not take care of her, and even abused her. There used to be a nanny who would protect her, but Paige fired all the nannies, leaving Camryn with no one to protect her.It was not until her brother Trenton could walk and talk that he began to protect her, preventing her from being abused to death. As a child, she constantly sought reasons why her mother did not like her. Was it because she was disobedient? She was very obedient, though, and went out of her way to please her mother. No matter what and how well she did, though, her mother did not like her. Paige’s only response was to hit and scold her, wishing she could strangle her to death. Her mother had indeed choked her countle

Callum did not have any positive feelings about his mother-in-law either. He, too, had had a hand in her finally being caught by the police. They had abused Camryn for so many years. If killing someone was not against the law, he would have torn that couple to pieces. Why had Paige not fought back when she had not wanted to marry Camryn’s father? She was forced into the marriage by her parents, not her husband. So why take it out on her husband? If they loved each other so much, they could have eloped, run away, or fought to the end. Things would definitely have turned out the way they wanted somehow. However, they had not done so, and instead, they gave in to their own interests. After giving in of their own accord, they poured all their hatred onto Camryn and Abel. The father and daughter pair had been so innocent. Abel had also married Paige at his parents’ behest; the fault was not his. However, because of it, he lost his life, and his only daughter was abused by his own o

“Alright, I'll come over this weekend.”Trenton really liked his nephew, and vice versa.Whenever he had free time, he would go over to help Camryn take care of Merry. After Merry was born, he had taken care of him more than Callum had, despite Callum being the father.“Alright, I’m hanging up now.”“Okay.”Camryn waited for her brother to hang up first.“We’ve talked it out.”Camryn said to her husband, “If we hadn’t, Trenton really might have misunderstood me.”“That’s normal. Everyone overthinks and misunderstands. So, no matter what your relationship with the other is, you have to make things clear whenever something happens.”Misunderstandings often arose because of a lack of communication.Camryn added, “I think Lana must feel something for Trenton too. I’ll mention it to Elisa later and ask her to find out more about Lana’s character.”Lana worked at Stone Group, so it would not be difficult for her to inquire about her character.Callum held her hand. “We just need

“But Lana won’t have to bear the responsibility. Her parents have saved a sum of money for her brother, enough to last until he graduates from university.“Her parents haven’t retired yet either and have a stable monthly income. If they save up more, it’ll be enough for him to start a family. That’s not all, either. They even said they’d sponsor the down payment for Lana if she wanted to buy a house here in Wiltspoon.“She’d have to pay the mortgage herself, of course. When she was still in school, some classmates asked Lana about this issue. Lana said that if her parents didn't have enough, then they wouldn't have dared to have a second child.“She said that it was her parents' choice and decision, and she respected their choice. Having a younger brother meant that she would have to split the inheritance with him, but it also meant that when her parents were gone, she would still have family on this earth.“Her family has also put a lot of effort into her brother’s education.
