Chapter 6

Author: Gu Lingfei
Serenity said with a smile, “What do I need your cousin for? He has a girlfriend. It’s too late now because the papers are signed! Keep it between us and don’t let my sister know. I don’t want her to be sad.”

Jasmine was speechless.

Her best friend sure pulled one heck of a move.

“There are all those Lifetime movies and romance novels about blindly marrying a multi-billionaire. Maybe that’s the case with you too, Seren.”

Smacking her best friend in the head, Serenity remarked with a grin, “I bet you read all the chick lit in the shop. Dream on about marrying a billionaire at first sight. Do you think the place is crawling with billionaires?”

Jasmine rubbed on the bump and sighed as Serenity had a point. Jasmine then asked, “Where’s your husband’s place?”

“Brynfield.”

“Not bad. It’s a good neighborhood and easily accessible. Plus, it’s not far from our shop. Where does your husband work? He must earn a lot of money since he bought a house in Wiltspoon and in an expensive neighborhood like Brynfield. What are his wages like? Do you need help with the mortgage?

“Seren, get your name on the title deed if he wants you to contribute to the mortgage. It’s to protect yourself. Not to jinx it but you won’t get anything when you guys fall out and divorce since it’s a prenuptial property.”

Studying her best friend’s face, Serenity answered, “You sound like my sister. He bought and paid the house in full, so there’s no mortgage. I don’t think it’s nice to put my name on the title deed when I didn’t spend a dime on it.”

Jasmine replied, “It won’t matter if the husband and wife get along.”

It struck Serenity that her brother-in-law bought the family house before marriage. He was also paying the monthly house loan, but the renovation was paid with Liberty’s money. Still, Liberty was not named on the property deed. With her mind harking back to her brother-in-law accusing Liberty of blowing cash, Serenity began to worry about her sister.

She ought to bring it up to her sister one of these days.

Serenity closed the shop at eleven o’clock at night.

Since Jasmine’s home was nearby and a family member was buying her dinner, Serenity told Jasmine to get on home.

Having shut the main door, Serenity took out her keys and walked to her e-bike.

She rode for twenty minutes until she arrived downstairs at her sister’s place. It was only when Serenity parked the bike that she realized she no longer lived there.

Lifting her head, Serenity glanced at the floor her sister was on and found that the lights were out. Although feeling down, Serenity left the family of three to be and rode her e-bike into the night.

It was midnight by the time she reached Brynfield.

She was welcomed by darkness as she pushed the door and entered the house. It did not feel like anyone lived in this space.

Grabbing her pajamas from the suitcase, Serenity took a hot shower and allowed the weariness to rock her to sleep.

Meanwhile, flanked by bodyguards, Zachary walked out of the Wiltspoon Hotel, which was owned by his family. He had just closed a big deal with a major client and arranged for the client to stay in the presidential suite. With his new wife coming into mind, Zachary decided to take a trip home.

“Sir, will it be the estate or the hilltop villa?”

The estate was the Yorks’ family home while the villa on the hill was a property belonging to Zachary. His permanent domicile was the villa, but he would catch up and have dinner with the elders of the family at the estate every now and then.

“To Brynfield.”

Duncan laughed, “You’re willing to accept that you’re getting old, but I’m not. I still feel young, as if we just got married.”“Right, we just got married. Jiggy’s already in her twenties, and we ‘just got married’. Everyone gets old, whether or not they’re willing to accept it.“I’m just willing to face reality. It’s not like I can actually become younger by saying I’m still young, so why lie to myself?”Duncan chuckled as he drove, “Alright, alright, let’s face reality. We’re all old now. Once Sonny gets married and has kids, we can retire and just play with the grandkids at home.”“He’s not getting married. Every time I nag him, he says he’s busy and that he will eventually get married, but when I ask him to go on blind dates, he refuses to. Serenity’s helping to keep an eye out for him too, but what good is it if he won’t even meet them?”“We’re not the ones getting married, so there’s no point in us liking the girl. He has to be the one who likes her. And he’s not the type t

Both Liberty and Duncan were equally busy. However, Duncan would get home earlier than Liberty and make sure everything was ready for her when she got back. At least, Liberty would relax without worrying about a thing at home. Usually, Duncan would be the one to take care of the minor things concerning the Fishers. Among generations of matriarchs, Duncan was widely regarded as the best husband any of them had ever had.Not only was Duncan capable, but he was gracious and commanded respect. Duncan did come from a good family, but he made it out on his own as well. He was quite a rebel in his youth. “Come on.” Liberty was not one to decline. Both of them stepped out of the house. “Should we ask Jiggy along? She should be back soon.” While walking, Liberty asked.Duncan said, “No. It will be just us.“Oh, the devoted girl dad has finally come around.” “Jiggy needs her own space and friends now that she’s older. She can’t just stick around us.” Duncan added, “No on

“Sonny, I’ll get out of your hair now. Come back when you have time, but let me know in advance, so I can set you up on a date with the girl. Trust me. She’s a nice girl.” “Got it, Mom. Just go and spend time with Dunc now. It’s been a while since you’ve been on a date with him. It’s time to experience what couples do."“Perfect time to stroll downtown. The area comes alive after dark.” Back in Havenmill, Sonny and Laurence would ditch the suits if they got out of work early to check out the boardwalk. It had a bustling vibe. “I think you’re talking about the food trucks there. Alright. I’ll check out the place with Duncan. I’m not eating anything though. No snacking after dark.” Duncan said, “What’s wrong with snacking at night? You have not gained any weight since you moved to Jensburg. Enjoy the food and don’t worry about your weight.” Her hectic workload put her under constant pressure. In the beginning, Liberty often lost sleep. Under that kind of stress, she was lu

The work was never-ending. Liberty vented. Despite this, she still handled the workload with dedication every day. Liberty was very responsible compared to the previous head of the Fishers. Although she also held tightly to the great power, she was much better to the family members. She gave every talented young member of the family a chance, never worrying that they would develop ambitions of taking her place.Liberty had the power and means to put them in their place. In fact, most family members did not have big ambitions. Given a chance, they would fulfill their roles. All they sought was stability. They would not look for trouble so long as they could make a decent living. Liberty took on the responsibility of a leader without connections or support. Yet, she handled everything with unwavering confidence.Jeanne, on the other hand, grew up in the family. The family knew what she was made of. When it came time for Jeanne to take over, she would have an easier time

Hank quickly spotted Luke, Olivia, and Sonny. The family of four chatted with the residents for a while before heading home. Back home, Sonny did not sit around for long. He told Hank, “I've got to go, Dad. I don’t have any plans or work tonight, so I’m getting some early rest.” It was nine at night. Usually, this time was still very early for him, but without any social obligations, he wanted to turn in early. The Browns were reluctant to see him go but knew better than to ask him to stay. Olivia held his hand, urging him to visit more often when he had the time. “Jessica, pack some fruit for Sonny to bring home.” Olivia recalled that Jessica bought some fresh fruit from the supermarket, so she told her to pack some up for Sonny. “I’m good, Grandmom. I’m stocked up at home.” Sonny declined Olivia’s kind gesture. “It’s okay, Jessica. Keep the fruit for yourselves.” He knew that Jessica would splurge on the pricier, better-quality fruit when he came around. Under norma

“I’ve bought a lot of fruit during my grocery run, so there’s no need to get more. Sonny barely eats any,” Jessica said. “The four of us can’t finish that much anyway.”Only Luke and Olivia would look for something to munch on while watching TV. “Alright. I’ll get going then.” “Go on.” Hank turned to head to the elevator as Jessica stepped back into the apartment. With the door closing behind her, her tense nerves relaxed. Finally, she could be alone for a while. She went to the kitchen to do the dishes and tidy up before sitting on the living room sofa. She turned on the television to watch the news. Normally, she would not get much of a chance to relax on the sofa. Luke and Olivia would be there, occupying the seat and the television. Not wanting to share the same room with them, Jessica would either be in the kitchen or the bedroom. The only exception was when Hank was around. Jessica’s favorite thing to do was grocery shopping because she did not have to take Oli

“Congratulations, Serenity,” said Imogen with a smile. “I’ve been busy these days. I just came back from a business trip, so I can’t go over to visit you.
