Chapter 6

Author: Gu Lingfei
Serenity said with a smile, “What do I need your cousin for? He has a girlfriend. It’s too late now because the papers are signed! Keep it between us and don’t let my sister know. I don’t want her to be sad.”

Jasmine was speechless.

Her best friend sure pulled one heck of a move.

“There are all those Lifetime movies and romance novels about blindly marrying a multi-billionaire. Maybe that’s the case with you too, Seren.”

Smacking her best friend in the head, Serenity remarked with a grin, “I bet you read all the chick lit in the shop. Dream on about marrying a billionaire at first sight. Do you think the place is crawling with billionaires?”

Jasmine rubbed on the bump and sighed as Serenity had a point. Jasmine then asked, “Where’s your husband’s place?”

“Brynfield.”

“Not bad. It’s a good neighborhood and easily accessible. Plus, it’s not far from our shop. Where does your husband work? He must earn a lot of money since he bought a house in Wiltspoon and in an expensive neighborhood like Brynfield. What are his wages like? Do you need help with the mortgage?

“Seren, get your name on the title deed if he wants you to contribute to the mortgage. It’s to protect yourself. Not to jinx it but you won’t get anything when you guys fall out and divorce since it’s a prenuptial property.”

Studying her best friend’s face, Serenity answered, “You sound like my sister. He bought and paid the house in full, so there’s no mortgage. I don’t think it’s nice to put my name on the title deed when I didn’t spend a dime on it.”

Jasmine replied, “It won’t matter if the husband and wife get along.”

It struck Serenity that her brother-in-law bought the family house before marriage. He was also paying the monthly house loan, but the renovation was paid with Liberty’s money. Still, Liberty was not named on the property deed. With her mind harking back to her brother-in-law accusing Liberty of blowing cash, Serenity began to worry about her sister.

She ought to bring it up to her sister one of these days.

Serenity closed the shop at eleven o’clock at night.

Since Jasmine’s home was nearby and a family member was buying her dinner, Serenity told Jasmine to get on home.

Having shut the main door, Serenity took out her keys and walked to her e-bike.

She rode for twenty minutes until she arrived downstairs at her sister’s place. It was only when Serenity parked the bike that she realized she no longer lived there.

Lifting her head, Serenity glanced at the floor her sister was on and found that the lights were out. Although feeling down, Serenity left the family of three to be and rode her e-bike into the night.

It was midnight by the time she reached Brynfield.

She was welcomed by darkness as she pushed the door and entered the house. It did not feel like anyone lived in this space.

Grabbing her pajamas from the suitcase, Serenity took a hot shower and allowed the weariness to rock her to sleep.

Meanwhile, flanked by bodyguards, Zachary walked out of the Wiltspoon Hotel, which was owned by his family. He had just closed a big deal with a major client and arranged for the client to stay in the presidential suite. With his new wife coming into mind, Zachary decided to take a trip home.

“Sir, will it be the estate or the hilltop villa?”

The estate was the Yorks’ family home while the villa on the hill was a property belonging to Zachary. His permanent domicile was the villa, but he would catch up and have dinner with the elders of the family at the estate every now and then.

“To Brynfield.”

Manny murmured a few instructions to the butler, and the latter excused himself. He then gave Laurence a call. Once the call connected, Manny said, “Laurence, the two Mrs. Johnsons are guests at the Longbottoms’. If you wish to take them home, you should show up. If not, I can’t guarantee they will remain unharmed.” No doubt Jane and Lilian were held hostage. Manny ended the call before Laurence had a chance to say anything. Jane and Lilian exchanged looks. With her eyes, Jane asked Lilian whether they should fight their way out of there or stay. Lilian was into the idea of staying. “Mr. Longbottom, what’s the meaning of this?” Jane looked enraged. “Are you holding us hostage?” Tony chuckled. “Let’s not use such a crude term. We are extending our utmost hospitality to you. You are our guests of honor.” Lilian said, “Since we are the honored guests, why haven’t we been offered a meal? We’ve had nothing but light snacks while shopping.” “At this hour? You expect

“Mr. Longbottom, you have so many questions, it’s really not easy to answer them one by one, and I’m not obliged to either.“Even if I told you who took my adopted son in, you wouldn’t know either. And of course, he caught their eye because he’s a bright kid. It’s much better to hand him over to someone who can truly appreciate him than keep him by my side.”Tony’s smile froze for a moment before he replied, “Mrs. Johnson, I know I’m asking quite a few questions, but I’m doing this to look for our missing child. He’s the only one left of his family, and we have to get him back.“Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to do right by his late parents and family. They were all murdered by lowlifes, and we have to avenge them.“If you tell us their name, I can get my men to inquire about them and get their information.”“You can’t meet him anymore,” Jane said. “At least, you won’t meet him when you’re alive. I don’t know if you’ll be able to meet him once you’re dead.”She had never died bef

“It’s our private matter what our relationship with Laurence Young is. I don’t think there’s a need to tell you.”Tony was left speechless for a moment before he continued, “Please don’t misunderstand. I’m not trying to trace his family tree or anything like that. It’s just that Laurence has the same name as one of our family’s children who got lost thirty years ago.“Thirty years ago, a tragedy occurred for us Longbottoms. Our family head at the time and his whole family were murdered by some robbers who stole a lot of very valuable items. By the time we arrived, it was too late.“Then, when we were tidying up their bodies later on, we realized their youngest son was missing. He was only about a year old at the time and could not walk or speak smoothly, and his nanny and bodyguards had gone missing too.“We think that the child was taken away by his nanny and his bodyguard, and avoided being killed.“That child was named Laurence, and if he hadn’t gone missing, he would be the on

“Please, sit.”Manny and Roxy politely invited Jane and Lilian to have a seat.Tony and Susan capitalized on the fact that they were elders and only nodded at the two ladies, considering that as having greeted them.Jane simply nodded back.Jane and Lilian sat down on a two-seater sofa facing Tony and Susan.Manny and his daughter sat on their left and right in single-seater sofas. An employee soon served some tea and snacks.“Please have some tea, ladies.”With a smile, Tony invited them to have tea before continuing, “Thirty years ago, I’ve been to Annenburg multiple times and had dealings with the men of your family once or twice, so I’d say we’re acquaintances.Jane did not speak, while Lilian commented, “Mr. Longbottom might be considered acquainted with the men of our family because you’ve had dealings with them, but we’ve never met, so we’re strangers.“There’s no way you sent your men to invite us over just to have a meal, isn’t that so? I don’t like beating around th

Jane and Lilian exchanged glances before Jane calmly replied, “May I know who your boss is? Do we know him?”The man in black remained polite as he replied, “We were instructed as such. Since he said so, he must know you.”Jane handed the bags she was carrying to the men in black as she said, “Fine. Since an old acquaintance has invited us, we’ll stop by. Please help me put my bags into my car.”The corner of the man’s mouth twitched, but he still accepted the bags Jane handed him.Lilian followed suit. They finally freed their hands. The two ladies insisted on driving their own car, not wanting to sit in the man’s car. The man in black figured it was alright since they had strength in numbers and quite a few cars. They could just box in Jane’s car on the road.Plus, the two Mrs. Johnsons were not familiar with Havenmill, unlike them, who had been working in this city all this while and were very familiar with every street and alleyway. However, he insisted on having one of his

“If something happens later, Jane, just hide behind me,” Lilian instructed.Jane replied, “They won’t dare to actually do anything to us. At most, they’ll invite us over for some tea.“And it’s not like I can’t fight at all. I’m just not as good as you. I can still hold my own. And didn’t you give me some itching powder? I’ll pull it out and cover them in it from head to toe when I need to.”Lilian laughed. “Alright, then. We’re in your son’s turf, so if he can’t even protect us, he still has to train himself up for a few more years.”The two ladies went to the busiest street in Havenmill. It was already after work hours, but due to the season, it was still not dark out yet. In fact, there were more people out on the streets right then compared to the daytime. After parking in a public parking lot nearby, the two joined the crowd.First and foremost, food. They tried a whole bunch of Havenmill’s local specialty snacks until they were full.Only after eating and drinking to th
