Chapter 6

Author: Gu Lingfei
Serenity said with a smile, “What do I need your cousin for? He has a girlfriend. It’s too late now because the papers are signed! Keep it between us and don’t let my sister know. I don’t want her to be sad.”

Jasmine was speechless.

Her best friend sure pulled one heck of a move.

“There are all those Lifetime movies and romance novels about blindly marrying a multi-billionaire. Maybe that’s the case with you too, Seren.”

Smacking her best friend in the head, Serenity remarked with a grin, “I bet you read all the chick lit in the shop. Dream on about marrying a billionaire at first sight. Do you think the place is crawling with billionaires?”

Jasmine rubbed on the bump and sighed as Serenity had a point. Jasmine then asked, “Where’s your husband’s place?”

“Brynfield.”

“Not bad. It’s a good neighborhood and easily accessible. Plus, it’s not far from our shop. Where does your husband work? He must earn a lot of money since he bought a house in Wiltspoon and in an expensive neighborhood like Brynfield. What are his wages like? Do you need help with the mortgage?

“Seren, get your name on the title deed if he wants you to contribute to the mortgage. It’s to protect yourself. Not to jinx it but you won’t get anything when you guys fall out and divorce since it’s a prenuptial property.”

Studying her best friend’s face, Serenity answered, “You sound like my sister. He bought and paid the house in full, so there’s no mortgage. I don’t think it’s nice to put my name on the title deed when I didn’t spend a dime on it.”

Jasmine replied, “It won’t matter if the husband and wife get along.”

It struck Serenity that her brother-in-law bought the family house before marriage. He was also paying the monthly house loan, but the renovation was paid with Liberty’s money. Still, Liberty was not named on the property deed. With her mind harking back to her brother-in-law accusing Liberty of blowing cash, Serenity began to worry about her sister.

She ought to bring it up to her sister one of these days.

Serenity closed the shop at eleven o’clock at night.

Since Jasmine’s home was nearby and a family member was buying her dinner, Serenity told Jasmine to get on home.

Having shut the main door, Serenity took out her keys and walked to her e-bike.

She rode for twenty minutes until she arrived downstairs at her sister’s place. It was only when Serenity parked the bike that she realized she no longer lived there.

Lifting her head, Serenity glanced at the floor her sister was on and found that the lights were out. Although feeling down, Serenity left the family of three to be and rode her e-bike into the night.

It was midnight by the time she reached Brynfield.

She was welcomed by darkness as she pushed the door and entered the house. It did not feel like anyone lived in this space.

Grabbing her pajamas from the suitcase, Serenity took a hot shower and allowed the weariness to rock her to sleep.

Meanwhile, flanked by bodyguards, Zachary walked out of the Wiltspoon Hotel, which was owned by his family. He had just closed a big deal with a major client and arranged for the client to stay in the presidential suite. With his new wife coming into mind, Zachary decided to take a trip home.

“Sir, will it be the estate or the hilltop villa?”

The estate was the Yorks’ family home while the villa on the hill was a property belonging to Zachary. His permanent domicile was the villa, but he would catch up and have dinner with the elders of the family at the estate every now and then.

“To Brynfield.”

Serenity laughed at Zachary for flattering himself.Zachary chuckled. “Our son is outstanding because of our superior genes. I also taught him well.”Naturally, he had made a significant contribution to Heath’s growth. Before Heath was born, Serenity and Zachary had come to an agreement. Zachary was responsible for educating and caring for the children. Whenever there was a need to be the good cop or the bad cop, he would always take on the role of the bad cop. Zachary would not let the children resent Serenity. He was always the first to criticize the children.“How’s River doing?”Zachary finally had the leisure to ask after River. Before Serenity could answer, Heath told Zachary, “Uncle River is wooing Aunt Rose. He said he would marry her as soon as possible. That way, Aunt Rose will become our real aunt.“Aunt Rose is amazing, Dad. She dared to hit Uncle River, but he didn’t even get angry.”Despite Heath’s cleverness, he was merely a six-year-old. He could not unders

“I like playing with them too. They’re good little brothers.”Despite Heath’s young age, he had the charisma of a reliable older brother. His parents had taught him to love his younger sister and cousins and be a good role model to them as the eldest.“But I like playing with Laurence and Sonny the most. They know much more than I do, especially Laurence. He’s amazing. He’s good at martial arts and studies. He even treats sick people.”Heath’s eyes were filled with admiration upon mentioning Laurence. He also liked his cousin, Sonny. He thought Sonny was better in academics than Laurence.Sonny had taught Heath many things. He also doted on Heath a lot.Indeed, Sonny loved his cousins. Now that he had his little sister, she quickly became the apple of his eye. “Why does Laurence know how to cure sick people, Dad? None of us knows how to do it.”Zachary replied, “He learned medicine. He’s your Aunt Lilian’s student. Lilian is a legendary doctor, so Laurence knows how to treat

Although Zachary indeed showed favoritism toward his daughter, he was still careful about how he treated Heath. He was afraid Heath would blame his parents and end up disliking Callia. There were some cases where parents did not realize they had gone too far with their favoritism. They would think they were being fair, but they were already favoring one child over the other. They never realized they were playing favorites.Zachary was scared that he was one of those cases. He did not want to hurt Heath's feelings just because he loved Callia more. Heath was special to him and Serenity. The love Zachary had for Heath was no less than what he felt for Callia. However, since he had high expectations for Heath and viewed him as the next successor of the York family, he was naturally stricter when educating Heath.“I love you and Mom a lot too. When we were living at Uncle River’s house, I talked to Callia about you every day.”Although Heath and Zachary had video calls almost ever

Serenity walked out of the Wiltspoon airport with the kids under the protection of the bodyguards and nannies.“Dad.”She immediately spotted Zachary, who had come to pick them up. The children’s eyes were sharp, too. Heath quickly pulled his hand from Serenity’s grasp and ran toward his father upon seeing him. He had to run and let Dad carry him first. Otherwise, Dad would only carry Callia afterward. No matter how sensible Heath was, he was still a six-year-old.“Dad.”Callia was also eager to be placed on the ground.Serenity had no choice but to put her down. Callia ran toward Zachary immediately. A bodyguard and a nanny followed her right away.Serenity took her time. She wanted to give the children some space to reunite with their father.Zachary had waited at the airport for a long time.He had arrived two hours earlier and waited for his wife and kids.“Lil’ Bun.”He missed his kids a lot after not having seen them for some time. The serious expression he us

Ms. Saunders looked toward Janine, “You can stop staring. I failed.”“Did you confess to Mr. York? You should confess and let him know your feelings.”Janine thought Ms. Saunders was too haughty and did not confess to Mr. York.Although many people noticed that Ms. Saunders had feelings for River, she had never seen Ms. Saunders confess even once. How could Mr. York possibly know anything if Ms. Saunders did not tell him the truth? After a moment of silence, Ms. Saunders said, “I confessed not just once.”“Oh.”Janine was surprised. She did not know her boss had already confessed. “River doesn’t like me. His heart already belongs to Rosalie. He just hadn’t realized it previously.“It’s pretty obvious, but I also couldn’t believe it. I thought they were competitors and had no chance of becoming lovers.“I was wrong. A man and a woman who genuinely admire each other can easily become lovers. Although they were enemies and business competitors, these identities will eventually

“I don’t need others to believe whether I’m being sincere or not. I’ll use my actions to prove to Rosalie that I like her for who she is, not for her family background.”After all, River’s family was superior to the Lafayettes. He did not tell Ms. Saunders that he was a young master of a wealthy family and was actually of equal social status to Rosalie.“It’s only normal for Rosalie to be on guard around me. However, I’m sure she’ll come to trust me after some time.”Ms. Saunders remained silent. She saw the determination in River’s eyes. The man she could not have was truly in love with Rosalie. She felt sad. After all, River was the only man she was attracted to after all those years, yet such an outstanding man could not be hers.“Would you have liked me if I were a few years younger than you, River?”Ms. Saunders thought her age was the main reason that River had rejected her. He said he did not like dating older women.River smiled. “There are no ‘ifs’, Ms. Saunders.
