Chapter 6

Author: Gu Lingfei
Serenity said with a smile, “What do I need your cousin for? He has a girlfriend. It’s too late now because the papers are signed! Keep it between us and don’t let my sister know. I don’t want her to be sad.”

Jasmine was speechless.

Her best friend sure pulled one heck of a move.

“There are all those Lifetime movies and romance novels about blindly marrying a multi-billionaire. Maybe that’s the case with you too, Seren.”

Smacking her best friend in the head, Serenity remarked with a grin, “I bet you read all the chick lit in the shop. Dream on about marrying a billionaire at first sight. Do you think the place is crawling with billionaires?”

Jasmine rubbed on the bump and sighed as Serenity had a point. Jasmine then asked, “Where’s your husband’s place?”

“Brynfield.”

“Not bad. It’s a good neighborhood and easily accessible. Plus, it’s not far from our shop. Where does your husband work? He must earn a lot of money since he bought a house in Wiltspoon and in an expensive neighborhood like Brynfield. What are his wages like? Do you need help with the mortgage?

“Seren, get your name on the title deed if he wants you to contribute to the mortgage. It’s to protect yourself. Not to jinx it but you won’t get anything when you guys fall out and divorce since it’s a prenuptial property.”

Studying her best friend’s face, Serenity answered, “You sound like my sister. He bought and paid the house in full, so there’s no mortgage. I don’t think it’s nice to put my name on the title deed when I didn’t spend a dime on it.”

Jasmine replied, “It won’t matter if the husband and wife get along.”

It struck Serenity that her brother-in-law bought the family house before marriage. He was also paying the monthly house loan, but the renovation was paid with Liberty’s money. Still, Liberty was not named on the property deed. With her mind harking back to her brother-in-law accusing Liberty of blowing cash, Serenity began to worry about her sister.

She ought to bring it up to her sister one of these days.

Serenity closed the shop at eleven o’clock at night.

Since Jasmine’s home was nearby and a family member was buying her dinner, Serenity told Jasmine to get on home.

Having shut the main door, Serenity took out her keys and walked to her e-bike.

She rode for twenty minutes until she arrived downstairs at her sister’s place. It was only when Serenity parked the bike that she realized she no longer lived there.

Lifting her head, Serenity glanced at the floor her sister was on and found that the lights were out. Although feeling down, Serenity left the family of three to be and rode her e-bike into the night.

It was midnight by the time she reached Brynfield.

She was welcomed by darkness as she pushed the door and entered the house. It did not feel like anyone lived in this space.

Grabbing her pajamas from the suitcase, Serenity took a hot shower and allowed the weariness to rock her to sleep.

Meanwhile, flanked by bodyguards, Zachary walked out of the Wiltspoon Hotel, which was owned by his family. He had just closed a big deal with a major client and arranged for the client to stay in the presidential suite. With his new wife coming into mind, Zachary decided to take a trip home.

“Sir, will it be the estate or the hilltop villa?”

The estate was the Yorks’ family home while the villa on the hill was a property belonging to Zachary. His permanent domicile was the villa, but he would catch up and have dinner with the elders of the family at the estate every now and then.

“To Brynfield.”

Serenity asked as she hung up his suit jacket.“I’m alright. Even if I were, I’d feel it was all worth it the moment I came home and saw you and the kids.”He turned and pulled his beloved wife into his arms.“I love you, honey.”“I love you too, babe,” Serenity replied sweetly. He leaned down to kiss her and she met him halfway enthusiastically. After a passionate kiss, Zachary let go of Serenity.“Want some water?”“No thanks, I’m not thirsty.”Zachary sat down on the bed with Serenity still in his arms. “Let me have a good cuddle with you.”Serenity laughed. “Are you still not sick of it yet even after all these years?”“Of course not. I’ll never get sick of cuddling you. If we’re lucky enough to meet in our next lives, I hope we can still be husband and wife and spend another lifetime together lovingly. I want to have both a boy and a girl again, too.”Amused, Serenity remarked, “We don’t even know if there’ll even be a next life, and you’re already making a wishlist for

Alex chuckled, “Alright then, you do your thing. Don’t drink too much, and be careful. I’ll call a cab back myself.“By the way, I’m not going back to the manor. I’ll stay at my own place for a few days. If I go back, I’ll just be on the receiving end of Mom’s disapproving looks again, as if being single is so shameful. River isn’t even married yet! He just brought his girlfriend home to meet the family, and Mom’s already that anxious.“She doesn’t consider how old River is. He’s almost thirty-two, while I still have like a year or two before I hit thirty.“River’s not innocent either. He always used to say he definitely wouldn’t get married before he turned thirty-five. I thought if he got married at thirty-five, he could be our shield and let us enjoy a few more carefree years.“But then, before this summer’s even over, River brought his girlfriend home. That was really fast.”So even rivals could become lovers. River really was something else. Then again, River and Ms. Lafayet

“Now, it turns out, she’s descended from a distinguished family herself. Her own elder sister even went back to inherit the family legacy. So, you see, there isn’t a single ordinary person among the York young madams.”Ivor took a slow sip of tea. “I don’t particularly want Sheila to marry into an upper class family either, but what if Alex genuinely likes Sheila?“Though the gap between our families is significant, our family is still comfortably well-off and we’re better off than many families.”Compared to the general public, the Jones family was quite privileged.“Just now, it seemed like Mr. York’s behavior toward Sheila was… unusual.” Marvin finally stopped reading the newspaper. As he folded it, he said, “That’s true, it was quite obvious. His eyes were completely on Sheila, and he didn’t try to hide it at all. It’s just that Sheila herself didn’t notice.”“That’s why I wanted to ask you what you think of Alex.”Hearing the uncle and nephew pair discussing Alex, Enid mov

Sheila stood up as well. She walked Alex out. However, Alex told her it was alright and walked in the direction of Westbrooke Gardens. Sheila watched him walk out of sight before turning to go back into the clinic. The lady who helped cook for them had already come downstairs to call them upstairs for dinner.“Did Mr. York walk here? Didn’t he drive?” Ivor glanced in the direction Alex had vanished and asked.“Well, he came by to look at properties to buy, so his car must be parked at Westbrooke Gardens. No, wait, his hands aren’t fully healed yet, so he probably didn’t drive.“Though he should already be well enough to drive, actually,” Sheila replied as she walked. “Anyway, who cares? Rich young masters like him always have drivers when they go out. They hardly need to drive themselves.“His eldest cousin even goes everywhere with several bodyguards—it’s even more of a parade.”Ivor remarked, “I’ve heard he does that, but it’s not to parade his wealth or anything like that. I

Enid stood up to get some fruits.Seeing her niece getting along well with Alex, Enid felt even more hospitable toward him.She already had a very favorable impression of this young man in the first place.“Mr. York, have some fruit,” Enid said with a smile, urging Alex to eat.“How is your injury, Mr. York? It shouldn’t be too serious anymore, right?” Enid asked concernedly.Alex replied, “It’s much better, thanks to Dr. Jones using the good stuff on me. I’m recovering very well. The dressing was changed when I was discharged, and Dr. Jones said I could remove the gauze in a few days. I won’t need to keep it bandaged anymore.”Sheila laughed, “How is that credit due to me?”His injury had not been that serious to begin with. It was just a bit of a flesh wound.Only these young masters from wealthy families, pampered since childhood, would stay in the hospital for so long, even though it was just a minor injury.Alex could have had the gauze removed already, but he did not wan

To the other Joneses, Alex said he had come to express his thanks. However, to Sheila, he said his main purpose was house-hunting, and knowing this was her home, he decided to stop by to thank her for her care during his hospital stay. The Joneses all looked at Alex. Ivor felt that Alex definitely had some interest in his sister.Sheila, however, did not overthink it. What she found curious was why Alex had come here to buy a house. There were no villa districts in this area. Given Alex’s status and position, if he were buying property, it should be a villa.“You came to look at properties?” Sheila sat down next to her brother and asked curiously, “Which ones did you view? Are you planning to buy a place nearby?”Alex said, “I went to Westbrooke Gardens and found a nice penthouse that I liked. I’ve already paid the deposit. I’ll pay the balance when we complete the paperwork.”“Westbrooke Gardens? Oh, that’s a nice place. Our family also has an apartment there, but we usually live
