Chapter 4

Auteur: Love Berries
Julie Sanders was Liam’s childhood sweetheart, and she had gone to the same school as Audrey, so Audrey naturally knew her too.

Because of that, Liam did not think Audrey would mind.

Unfortunately for him, William had just come out of the study and heard every word.

Furious, William grabbed a vase from the side table and hurled it at him.

“How did the Caldwell family end up with an idiot like you? Do you realize what you’re doing? You’re humiliating Audrey! You’re supposed to be Audrey’s husband, not Julie Sanders’s husband. If she had so little self-respect that she got pregnant before marriage, what does that have to do with you? Why are you worrying about her?”

“Grandpa, that’s not how it works.” Liam turned his head aside and let the vase shatter all over the floor. He frowned. “Julie became a researcher at an overseas institute when she was still so young. The TSA competition is starting soon, and Caldwell Group needs researchers like her. If we don’t count on Julie, who else can we count on?”

He glanced at Audrey.

The emotion in his eyes flashed and disappeared almost instantly.

He knew this was unfair to Audrey.

But she was only an orphan. What right did she have to compare herself to Julie?

Letting her stand in for Julie was already generous enough.

At worst, when he married Julie in the future, he could keep Audrey somewhere outside the family as compensation.

After all, her face was still barely worth looking at.

William listened until his blood pressure nearly shot through the roof.

What brilliant female researcher?

As if he didn’t know exactly what kind of person Julie Sanders was.

Only his grandson was blind enough to treat her like some precious treasure.

Seeing this, Liam’s mother quickly stepped in. “Dad, Liam isn’t entirely wrong. Julie hasn’t had an easy life either. She’s been raising a four-year-old boy all by herself. Besides, she’s highly educated. It won’t hurt Audrey to feel a little wronged. At the end of the day, Audrey is the one who isn’t capable enough to help Liam. Audrey, don’t you agree?”

A subtle look flickered in Liam’s mother’s eyes. Margaret Caldwell’s contempt was almost impossible to hide.

Julie had given the Caldwell family a genius grandson.

If not for William, she never would have allowed her precious grandson to remain outside the family.

So what if Audrey had to suffer a little?

At that, a trace of mockery crossed Audrey’s eyes.

Margaret even knew how old Julie’s child was. It seemed she knew everything about Julie and Liam.

And Audrey had been foolish enough to devote herself to taking care of Margaret’s health all these years.

“Grandpa, Ms. Sanders is indeed quite pitiful,” Audrey said slowly. “She got pregnant before marriage after meeting a worthless man, and that man refused to take responsibility for the child. In my opinion, the child probably inherited that awful man’s genes too. He must be hard to raise.”

The moment Margaret heard that, she panicked and blurted out, “Who are you calling awful?”

“Margaret, of course I mean the man who abandoned Ms. Sanders,” Audrey said, pretending to be surprised. “He refused to take responsibility for his own child. If that isn’t a worthless, irresponsible man, then what is he? Did I say something wrong?”

Her expression was perfectly innocent.

Margaret could not simply tell Audrey that the so-called worthless man was her own son. Audrey’s words left her choking with anger.

After a moment, she barely managed to say, “There’s nothing wrong with what you said, but you’re about to marry Liam. Don’t speak so harshly. Don’t bring those country habits into this family.”

Audrey laughed coldly in her heart.

Yes, she had grown up in the countryside when she was young.

But even she had never done anything as shameless as this family.

“Harsh, maybe, but not wrong,” she said, smoothly changing the subject. “So, Grandpa, since Ms. Sanders has had such a hard time, why don’t we just listen to Liam and let her stay at the marital home for a while? I’ll be busy preparing for the wedding anyway, so I can move out first.”

The marital home was supposed to belong to her and Liam.

But whenever Audrey thought about what he and Julie had done there, she felt sick.

Besides, she had already decided to dump him.

Why would she stay there and let them disgust her further?

William had not wanted to agree at first.

But after frowning for a while and glancing at Audrey, he eventually relented.

People always said distance made the heart grow fonder. Maybe if Liam spent more time around Julie, he would get tired of her, and his taste would finally return to normal.

Then maybe he would stop obsessing over playing father to another woman’s child.

“Fine. Since Audrey has said so, we’ll do as she says.” William stared at his grandson and warned him coldly, “But as compensation, transfer the Hillside Villa to Audrey. Let her stay there for the time being.”

“Thank you, Grandpa.”

Margaret, standing off to the side, was so upset she nearly felt physical pain. She had just opened her mouth to object when Audrey smiled and thanked him first.

Her eyes curved beautifully, but there was no real emotion in them.

She was young.

She was shallow.

And she did not mind having more money.

She had spent so many years working herself to the bone for the Caldwell family.

A villa was the least she deserved.

Liam looked at Audrey, and something strange stirred in his chest.

For some reason, he felt as if she was different from before.

She had not even made a scene after he stood her up at the courthouse.

But Liam quickly brushed the thought aside.

Audrey had always loved him deeply. She would probably give in to anything just to make him happy.

In that case, giving her a villa was no big deal.

“We’ll do as Grandpa says.”

After William and Margaret left, Liam looked at Audrey again.

“Don’t misunderstand the situation with Julie. You know what your body is like. Julie gets pregnant easily. Maybe if you spend more time with her, you’ll be able to have a child one day too.”

“You seem to know a lot about her body.”

Audrey gave him a sarcastic glance.

Julie’s words were clever. She had given her son a way out while implying Audrey was making a big deal out of nothing.Audrey glanced at her, the corner of her mouth lifting slightly.“Ms. Sanders, I’m not trying to reason with you. I’m stating a fact.”She lowered her head and looked at Ian.“Sweetheart, making a mistake isn’t the scary part. The scary part is making a mistake and refusing to admit it. Did your mother ever teach you that?”Ian’s eyes reddened at her words. His mouth twisted, and he looked like he was about to cry.Julie quickly pulled him into her arms, her expression turning unpleasant.“Audrey, why are you arguing with a child?”“I’m not arguing with him,” Audrey said lightly. “I just hope he understands that bullying someone who can’t speak doesn’t make him look strong. It only makes people wonder how he was raised.”Her last few words were quiet, but they landed like a slap across Julie’s face. After all, Julie had just used the same idea of “manners” t

When Julie saw Audrey getting involved, anxiety flashed through her.Whatever else happened, she wanted Audrey gone as soon as possible. So Julie covered Ian’s mouth and urged, “Audrey, you’re right. We won’t pursue this for now. You should…”Audrey noticed the urgency in Julie’s voice. It was almost as if she were hiding from something.Just as Audrey was wondering about it, a very familiar male voice came from behind her.“Audrey?”Liam was here.Audrey understood at once. She glanced down at her outfit, and a trace of mockery tugged at her lips.So Julie knew it too.Liam was nothing but a shallow bastard who loved a pretty face.Liam wore a crisp suit with small touches of red in the detailing. He had clearly dressed up on purpose, as if he had come here for a date with Julie. When Audrey turned around, Liam visibly froze.Audrey rarely dressed up.In his memory, she was always bare-faced and plain. Beautiful, yes, but bland, like a glass of water with no flavor.Bu

Audrey sighed softly. What were the odds? Before meeting Elliot, she had to run into this kind of bad luck.Compared with Ian, who was on an entirely different level in size, the little girl looked especially pitiful.Audrey frowned slightly, a trace of hesitation rising in her heart.Should she help? There was no need, right? The Willow Cafe was far from Hillside Villa. A little girl this young could not have come here on her own.Her family had to be nearby. The meeting time was almost here, and Audrey did not want to waste time on someone else’s problem. She was about to walk around the two children and head inside when a gentle but anxious voice rang out.“Ian! What happened?”Julie, dressed in a black dress, hurried over to her son. When she looked up, she saw Audrey standing not far away. The moment Julie saw Audrey, disbelief flashed through her eyes. This perfectly dressed woman, so beautiful she almost looked unreal, was Audrey Jensen?Fine.Audrey was beautifu

Audrey opened her eyes and looked into the mirror. She tilted her head slightly from side to side, studying herself. The makeup artist had clearly put real thought into the look. The makeup was not heavy, but it brought out every advantage in her features. Most of all, it highlighted the cool, distant quality in her eyes and brows perfectly. The slight lift at the corners of her eyes added a touch of allure without looking forced.“You’re actually unreal.” Alin circled her once, clicking her tongue in amazement. “I work in fashion, so I’ve seen plenty of beautiful women, but you’re the kind of beauty people are just born with. It’s like the universe went out of its way to make you beautiful.”Was it really that dramatic?Audrey looked at herself in the mirror again, her expression calm. There were plenty of beautiful women in the world.Beautiful men, on the other hand, were rare.Faced with Alin’s praise, she only said lightly, “It’s fine.”“Fine?” Alin’s voice shot up sever

Through the video screen, Audrey saw that the person standing outside was a middle-aged woman. Only then did she go to open the door.If it really had been Liam, she would have pretended to be asleep. After all, seeing a scumbag this late at night was a guaranteed nightmare. The woman was wearing a cream-colored uniform and looked like household staff.Still, there was something refined about her, something that made her seem as if she had come from an old, powerful household.“Hello. I’m the nanny from the house next door. You can call me Mrs. Watson.” Mrs. Watson smiled kindly and rubbed her hands together. “Our young lady accidentally bumped into you earlier. I came specially to apologize. I hope you won’t take it to heart.”Audrey paused slightly. It was only a child bumping into her.It was hardly worth sending someone over to apologize in person. Then Mrs. Watson added, “If you happen to see my young miss again next time, I hope you can be patient with her.”Now Audrey

If the timing had been right, Audrey would have loved to tell Liam right then and there. She truly had no interest in being Mrs. Caldwell. But there were some things William could know that Liam, this walking headache, absolutely could not.Audrey had no desire to keep talking to an idiot. She turned and left the Caldwell residence. Her figure was slender, and her steps were light. From behind, she did not seem any different from before.Yet Liam could not shake the feeling that something had changed.Ever since he had failed to show up for their marriage license, Audrey had seemed more and more beyond his control. The thought made him increasingly irritated. He still preferred the old Audrey, the one who had treated him like the center of her world....By the time Audrey returned to Hillside Villa, it was already ten at night. The villa sat in the suburbs outside the city, far from the bright lights and noise downtown. Without all that glare, a few stars were visible in t
