Chapter 3

Auteur: Love Berries
One week earlier, a secretary from the Lowe Group had suddenly come to see her with an absurd proposal.

“Ms. Jensen, Mr. Lowe needs a wife for a contract marriage. This is our CEO’s contact information. If you’re interested, you can think it over.”

Lowe.

Audrey later had someone look into him. This Mr. Lowe was none other than Elliot Lowe, the heir to the Lowe family, one of the most powerful families in the country.

The Lowe family had been in serious internal turmoil. Although Elliot had managed to suppress the conflict, several of his uncles were still trying to interfere in his marriage, and his grandfather had been pressuring him to settle down.

He had probably been forced into a corner. That was why he was looking for someone to marry quickly.

At the time, Audrey had only found it ridiculous.

But now...

For Lucy’s sake, the wedding one month from now would go on as planned.

She would still get married.

Since Liam was unwilling, she didn't mind changing the groom.

She glanced at her phone.

By coincidence, the other party had just replied.

'All right. See you in three days.'

Audrey let out a quiet breath.

Back when she was still at the research institute, her mentor had once said she was emotionally slow.

She had thought meeting Liam meant she had finally learned what love was.

Now she realized it had only been a disaster she had to survive.

Instead of wasting time and energy choosing someone else, she might as well give Elliot Lowe a try.

This heir to the country's most powerful circle was famous for two things.

First, he had no interest in women. Rumor had it his sex drive was practically nonexistent, and his private life was cleaner than a monk’s.

Second, he was exceptionally good-looking. Someone had once privately offered 130 million just to spend one night with him.

If he had no interest in women, then he wouldn’t have improper thoughts about her.

And since he was that good-looking, even if some “accident” did happen, she wouldn’t exactly be losing out.

After learning what Audrey was planning, Sophie hesitated several times, then stopped herself.

In her heart, she even felt a little sorry for the heir.

Audrey was perfect in every other way.

The only problem was that she was hopeless when it came to love.

For Elliot’s sake, Sophie truly hoped he was as restrained, proper, and coldly celibate as the rumors said.

The sky gradually darkened.

Audrey checked the time and was just about to leave the clinic when Sophie finally remembered the real reason she had wanted to talk to her.

“Oh, right, Audrey. The next TSA robotics competition is happening in a month. They want to invite you to be one of the judges. Do you have time?”

The TSA robotics competition was the most prestigious competition of its kind in the world. The participants included top university talents as well as researchers sent by major companies.

Naturally, the Shaw family was no exception.

As for the judges, most of them came from Ivy League backgrounds and had made outstanding contributions to the world.

Audrey was one of the people invited.

She paused for a moment, then answered casually, “We’ll see.”

...

That night, Audrey was still called back to the Caldwell residence by William.

By the time she arrived, Liam had already been harshly punished by his grandfather.

He had knelt in the study for a full two hours. It was not until a servant came in and said Audrey had returned that the old man finally allowed him to go downstairs.

When Liam came out of the study, his forehead was bruised and swollen.

The moment he saw Audrey, a trace of unease flashed across his face.

Audrey couldn’t help curling her lips slightly.

William wasn’t stupid. Even Sophie had already heard about Liam and Julie’s mess, so how could William possibly not know?

Liam forced a faint smile.

He stepped forward and suddenly grabbed her hand. “Audrey, where did you go today? Why couldn’t I find you earlier?”

“I was waiting for you at the courthouse so we could get married. You never showed up, so I went shopping for a while.”

Audrey knew he was afraid she had discovered what was going on between him and Julie, so she deliberately said it that way.

When Liam heard that she had not gone to the marital home, he relaxed a little.

“The marriage license was my fault. Once I’m done with work over the next few days, we’ll go again. Don’t worry. This time, I won’t stand you up.”

If Julie had not fooled around with him today, the police would never have mistaken them for a solicitation case. Someone with an agenda would never have taken photos either, and the whole thing would not have reached his grandfather.

Because of that, his grandfather had once again pressed him about the marriage license.

No matter what, Liam could no longer keep dragging it out.

He would never have imagined that the person who reported him was Audrey.

Audrey looked at his disheveled state, and her mood improved quite a bit.

“There’s no rush,” she said lightly. “The wedding is already set for a month from now anyway.”

Seeing that her expression was normal, Liam stopped worrying about it.

That made sense.

She loved him so much. Even if he had stood her up, she would not complain.

“You’ve always been understanding,” Liam said. “But Julie brought the child back today. She’s been raising him alone all these years, and she’s suffered a lot. I want her to take the child and stay at our marital home for now.”

Julie’s words were clever. She had given her son a way out while implying Audrey was making a big deal out of nothing.Audrey glanced at her, the corner of her mouth lifting slightly.“Ms. Sanders, I’m not trying to reason with you. I’m stating a fact.”She lowered her head and looked at Ian.“Sweetheart, making a mistake isn’t the scary part. The scary part is making a mistake and refusing to admit it. Did your mother ever teach you that?”Ian’s eyes reddened at her words. His mouth twisted, and he looked like he was about to cry.Julie quickly pulled him into her arms, her expression turning unpleasant.“Audrey, why are you arguing with a child?”“I’m not arguing with him,” Audrey said lightly. “I just hope he understands that bullying someone who can’t speak doesn’t make him look strong. It only makes people wonder how he was raised.”Her last few words were quiet, but they landed like a slap across Julie’s face. After all, Julie had just used the same idea of “manners” t

When Julie saw Audrey getting involved, anxiety flashed through her.Whatever else happened, she wanted Audrey gone as soon as possible. So Julie covered Ian’s mouth and urged, “Audrey, you’re right. We won’t pursue this for now. You should…”Audrey noticed the urgency in Julie’s voice. It was almost as if she were hiding from something.Just as Audrey was wondering about it, a very familiar male voice came from behind her.“Audrey?”Liam was here.Audrey understood at once. She glanced down at her outfit, and a trace of mockery tugged at her lips.So Julie knew it too.Liam was nothing but a shallow bastard who loved a pretty face.Liam wore a crisp suit with small touches of red in the detailing. He had clearly dressed up on purpose, as if he had come here for a date with Julie. When Audrey turned around, Liam visibly froze.Audrey rarely dressed up.In his memory, she was always bare-faced and plain. Beautiful, yes, but bland, like a glass of water with no flavor.Bu

Audrey sighed softly. What were the odds? Before meeting Elliot, she had to run into this kind of bad luck.Compared with Ian, who was on an entirely different level in size, the little girl looked especially pitiful.Audrey frowned slightly, a trace of hesitation rising in her heart.Should she help? There was no need, right? The Willow Cafe was far from Hillside Villa. A little girl this young could not have come here on her own.Her family had to be nearby. The meeting time was almost here, and Audrey did not want to waste time on someone else’s problem. She was about to walk around the two children and head inside when a gentle but anxious voice rang out.“Ian! What happened?”Julie, dressed in a black dress, hurried over to her son. When she looked up, she saw Audrey standing not far away. The moment Julie saw Audrey, disbelief flashed through her eyes. This perfectly dressed woman, so beautiful she almost looked unreal, was Audrey Jensen?Fine.Audrey was beautifu

Audrey opened her eyes and looked into the mirror. She tilted her head slightly from side to side, studying herself. The makeup artist had clearly put real thought into the look. The makeup was not heavy, but it brought out every advantage in her features. Most of all, it highlighted the cool, distant quality in her eyes and brows perfectly. The slight lift at the corners of her eyes added a touch of allure without looking forced.“You’re actually unreal.” Alin circled her once, clicking her tongue in amazement. “I work in fashion, so I’ve seen plenty of beautiful women, but you’re the kind of beauty people are just born with. It’s like the universe went out of its way to make you beautiful.”Was it really that dramatic?Audrey looked at herself in the mirror again, her expression calm. There were plenty of beautiful women in the world.Beautiful men, on the other hand, were rare.Faced with Alin’s praise, she only said lightly, “It’s fine.”“Fine?” Alin’s voice shot up sever

Through the video screen, Audrey saw that the person standing outside was a middle-aged woman. Only then did she go to open the door.If it really had been Liam, she would have pretended to be asleep. After all, seeing a scumbag this late at night was a guaranteed nightmare. The woman was wearing a cream-colored uniform and looked like household staff.Still, there was something refined about her, something that made her seem as if she had come from an old, powerful household.“Hello. I’m the nanny from the house next door. You can call me Mrs. Watson.” Mrs. Watson smiled kindly and rubbed her hands together. “Our young lady accidentally bumped into you earlier. I came specially to apologize. I hope you won’t take it to heart.”Audrey paused slightly. It was only a child bumping into her.It was hardly worth sending someone over to apologize in person. Then Mrs. Watson added, “If you happen to see my young miss again next time, I hope you can be patient with her.”Now Audrey

If the timing had been right, Audrey would have loved to tell Liam right then and there. She truly had no interest in being Mrs. Caldwell. But there were some things William could know that Liam, this walking headache, absolutely could not.Audrey had no desire to keep talking to an idiot. She turned and left the Caldwell residence. Her figure was slender, and her steps were light. From behind, she did not seem any different from before.Yet Liam could not shake the feeling that something had changed.Ever since he had failed to show up for their marriage license, Audrey had seemed more and more beyond his control. The thought made him increasingly irritated. He still preferred the old Audrey, the one who had treated him like the center of her world....By the time Audrey returned to Hillside Villa, it was already ten at night. The villa sat in the suburbs outside the city, far from the bright lights and noise downtown. Without all that glare, a few stars were visible in t
