Chapter 6

Author: Summer Sway
I laughed. "Don't twist it. We were never a thing. So where's the betrayal?"

She blinked like I slapped her, then lunged at Yvette, yanking her collar. "You've always competed with me for everything! And now you're stealing my man? You nasty thief!"

Deborah's slap echoed. "What garbage are you spewing?! I raised Yvette—I know who she is. She's not a thief. Quinn was never yours to begin with. He was always going to marry Yvette!"

Rosie stood there, stunned. "Mom? You hit me... for some adopted girl?!"

Gordon's hands trembled. "Yvette's already been through hell with the kidnapping... Why are you still hurting her? Didn't you promise to treat her like a real sister when you came back? Was that all just talk?"

That hit me. Hard.

Back then, when Rosie dragged me into messing with Yvette, I'd already noticed Gordon and Deborah actually gave a damn about her. But Yvette never used their love to get back at Rosie. Not once.

She was kind. The kind of girl who really deserved to be love

Deborah's face went dark. She stormed up to Rosie and slapped her, hard. "It was you?! How could you?! Yvette's my daughter—blood or not, she still gets a share! Do you even realize how happy she was when you came back? She gave up her room for you! You heartless brat—how could you treat her like this?!"She kept swinging with every word.Rosie's face puffed up like a balloon.Gordon turned away, his voice tight. "You crossed the line this time."Yvette finally spoke up. "I wasn't totally out that day. I saw the Yelton logo on the van that grabbed me. That's how I knew it was someone from the family. I didn't know who, so I pretended to be paralyzed to throw them off. I didn't want to believe it—but everything led back to Rosie."Gordon swung hard, knocking Rosie to the floor.Just then, Caleb barged in holding the wedding suit.He froze at the chaos, eyes locking on Rosie crumpled on the floor. "What the hell happened?!"He rushed over, saw the blood on her face, then snapped

I kept my face blank and muttered a quick "yeah" as I walked right past her.Deborah exhaled. She hurried after me, voice dropping. "Quinn, Rosie's still family. Please don't hold this over her..."I didn't say anything, just kept moving, until she grabbed my arm."And... Yvette hasn't really talked to me since what happened. She's been struggling. Tonight's the first time she looked a little okay. I know she's adopted, but I love her. I hate seeing her like this."Back in the room, I sat on it for a sec, then said, "Yvette, Deborah doesn't seem as cold toward you as people say. Looked like she really cared."Yvette went quiet. Then she met my eyes. "I faked being paralyzed because I suspected Rosie was the one who hurt me. I didn't say anything before... I was scared you still loved her."I thought about the lies Rosie fed me in my past life and gave a small nod.We were just about to finally have our first night together when Rosie knocked. She strutted in with two glasses o

The second she said it, the crowd exploded."Break off the engagement?""What is she doing?""Can she even cancel a wedding that's not hers?"Rosie ignored it all and locked eyes on Gordon and Deborah. "Mom, Dad, I love Caleb. I know the Quandts saved our company, but I can't lie to myself. I'll pay them back one day."I stared her down from the stage, starting to feel secondhand embarrassment. She wasn't even the bride tonight.Quandt Corp had already wired over a million—and now she thought throwing out an 'I'll pay it back' made everything fine? Not even a hint of shame. And doing all this? Just to humiliate me for Caleb? My dad's face darkened. "What the hell is this supposed to mean?!"Rosie didn't even blink. She snapped at my dad, "You used money to force my family into a marriage! That's disgusting! I was gonna give Quinn a shot, but he treated me like I was already his. He doesn't even know how lucky he was!"Then she spun on Yvette. "And you—some knockoff playing

Rosie's eyes went wide. "What?! Brother-in-law?!"Yvette rolled right past her, calm and collected. "Tonight's my wedding with Quinn. Didn't you hear?"I looked up at her and smiled. "Told you. She just wouldn't listen."Rosie froze. "No way. Mom and Dad went to your house to talk about my marriage. He was supposed to marry me!"Sebastian stepped in, voice low. "Rosie, the Quandts were always engaged to Yvette."She wasn't buying it.She smoothed her dress, forced a smile, and grabbed my hand. "Quinn, drop the drama. Let's finish the ceremony. Caleb's still waiting."I pulled my hand back without thinking. She scoffed. "Even if tonight's our wedding, I'm not spending it with you. I promised Caleb I'd be with him. So don't waste my time."Word for word—that's what she said last time.Back then, I was dumb enough to think marriage might change her. That if I held on long enough, she'd come around. So I begged her to stay.Gordon even had Caleb shipped off that night, quietly.

I marched into the mansion, straight to the staff quarters.Shoved the door open. Yvette sat in her wheelchair. Her face lit up—then dropped. "Why didn't you pick Rosie?"Didn't bother answering. Just leaned in and kissed her. "Don't you wanna marry me?"She turned tomato red. Paused. Whispered, "I do."***Next day, I swung by again. Sebastian, the house manager, stopped me at the door."Mrs. Yelton had a wedding suit made. Time to try it on," he said, grinning like it was Christmas. "Yvette's had a crush on you forever. She's gonna lose it."Then that voice hit."What did you just say?"Rosie stood in the doorway. Caleb, obviously, right behind her, smug as hell. Before Sebastian could get a word out, I stepped in. "It's nothing."Rosie stared me down, laughed, dead-eyed. "Trying to act noble now that you're marrying me?"She snatched the suit. "Caleb's wearing it first. Then you can have it."Sebastian's face dropped. "Miss Yelton, your mom had that made for Mr. Quandt
