The question made Liam go rigid.

"Babe, what are you talking about? You can't even tell me apart from my brother?"

I lifted my eyes to his face and asked again.

"Who are you?"

Liam was quiet for a moment, then raked his fingers through his hair in frustration and sat down beside me.

"Did you look at my phone?"

I stared at him without blinking.

"I did. If I hadn't, would I have just kept being your fool forever?"

He frowned at me like I was the one being unreasonable, then sighed.

"Two years ago, my brother was in a car accident on a business trip abroad. He died."

"Dad was worried the news would destabilize the company, so he had me step in as Noah."

I didn't need a mirror to know my face looked awful.

"So now you're both Liam and Noah?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

I forced a smile, but my voice cracked.

"Then what about me? I'm Liam's wife, but you're not just Liam anymore. Do you actually expect me to accept you being with Chloe as Noah?"

Liam stiffened for a second, then took my hand, his voice going soft.

"That's not what I meant. You're the only one I love. We've been married for years. Don't you trust me?"

"You know how it was. When the family cast me out, I could never let it go. This is my chance to prove myself. I can't pass it up."

I knew. Of course I knew.

After losing the competition for the inheritance, he'd been stripped of everything.

I was the one who'd stayed by his side, comforted him, and helped him get back on his feet.

He'd held me and said I was all he had.

But now that he had everything he'd ever dreamed of, he didn't want me anymore.

"If I hadn't found out, were you going to keep lying to me forever? And marry Chloe?"

He gently put an arm around my shoulders. His eyes still looked tender, but I could see the coldness and impatience underneath.

"You have to understand. Noah is the Brooks family heir. He needs a wife with the right background."

"Chloe is just the best candidate for that. I don't have feelings for her. You'll always be the only one I love."

I lowered my eyes, and the tears finally fell.

The warmth we'd once shared when we held each other close was probably gone forever.

"You say you don't love her. Then why did you buy her all those gifts? Why did you go shoe shopping with her instead of picking me up? Why did you spend so much money on her?"

Liam frowned, his tone turning cold.

"Iris, since when did you get so materialistic? You just found out I have money and now you want some?"

I looked up at him in disbelief.

"What did you just say?"

I'd lived with him in that tiny apartment for three years, hadn't bought new clothes in three years, counted every single penny, all because of something he'd once said.

He'd said, "Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a home of our own? A house with a cat and all the succulents you love."

I'd wanted that home with him too.

Now he had plenty of houses, but none of them were our home.

When he saw my bloodshot eyes and the tears that wouldn't stop, panic crossed his face.

"I'm sorry, babe. I didn't mean it."

"That came out wrong. I just got worked up and said the wrong thing."

"You're the best, babe. Forgive me this once, okay?"

He took my hand and pressed it against his cheek, begging me the way he always did whenever he'd made me angry.

The soft light fell across his face, making him look just as young and handsome as he had three years ago. But the fierce love he'd once had for me was gone from his eyes.

"Are you really going to marry Chloe?"

His voice stayed gentle.

"It's only Noah marrying her. But I'm Liam. And Liam only loves you."

Noah. Liam. Could he even tell the difference anymore?

Maybe the moment he'd decided to take everything as Noah, my Liam was already gone for good.

In the home we'd built together, sitting across from my own husband, loneliness nearly swallowed me whole.

"Fine. I understand. I get it."

The day after Chloe left, Liam found me.I was leaving the office when I heard a group of young women whispering about the handsome guy over there. I followed their gaze without thinking and locked eyes with Liam.He had dark circles under his eyes, stubble he hadn't shaved clean, and looked much thinner. He looked worn down."Babe..."I cut him off."I told you to stop calling me that."But he pressed on shamelessly."But we're not divorced yet. You're still my wife."I didn't want to have this conversation outside my office, so I brought him back to my place.Inside, he looked around cautiously."Have you been okay?"I stepped back, keeping my distance."I'm fine. But I don't want to make small talk. What do you want?"A flash of hurt crossed his eyes, but he held himself together and told me why he'd come."I heard Chloe came to see you. Did she give you a hard time?"I was puzzled."No, she didn't. Is that really why you're here?"Liam shook his head. He looked like he wanted to re

I didn't expect Chloe to show up at my door. When I opened the door, she stood there with her chin lifted, still carrying that air of superiority, though her face looked drawn."Chloe? How did you find me? What do you want?"She looked me up and down."I didn't pay much attention to you last time. This time I wanted a closer look, to figure out what you have that I don't."I stared back, confused."What do you mean, what I have?"She didn't answer."Aren't you going to invite me in for a drink?"Once inside, I poured her a glass of water and nothing more."Are you going to tell me why you're here?"She took the glass and finally spoke."Noah, or Liam, or whatever his name is. We broke off the engagement."I froze for a second."You know?"Chloe scoffed."He told me himself. Said he's not Noah, he's Liam, and he wants to call off the engagement.""I never thought the Brooks family would pull something like this.""But I did like him. I didn't care if he was Liam or Noah, as long as it w

With a solid resume, I quickly found a job in the new city. All those projects I'd fought to land, driven by the dream of buying a house with Liam, had become the very thing that gave me the confidence to leave him.Once I'd settled in, I finally had the headspace to deal with our joint account. He used to transfer his entire paycheck to me every month, and I'd managed our savings carefully, never wanting to let him down.As of today, there was $139,000 in the account.Just a month ago, I'd happily told Liam that if we kept at it, we'd have enough for a down payment soon. One month later, I sat going through transaction records, calculating his share to the cent.Including the returns on our savings over the years, I owed him exactly $71,896.57.For the man he'd become, that probably wasn't even enough to buy Chloe a handbag she liked. But for me, it was a fortune, and a debt I needed to settle down to the last cent.I wouldn't take a penny more than my share, and I wouldn't shortchang

A beat passed before Liam asked in disbelief."...What did you say?"I said it again."I said I want a divorce."He finally took me seriously."Babe, don't joke about something like that.""I'm not joking.""I'm not signing divorce papers."I frowned."What makes you think you get a say?"He paused, dodging my question."Just hang in there a little longer. Once this dies down, things can go back to the way they were.""We've been married for three years. You can't just walk away.""Without you, I never would have made it this far. I can't lose you."Liam's voice was full of grief, but my chest hurt more.I made one last demand."Then let me tell the truth."He refused."No. Absolutely not.""I can't let anyone find out I'm not Noah.
