After signing my severance agreement, I went home.

Liam wasn't there.

Ever since the night he'd come clean, he'd been spending less and less time at home, as if he was afraid to face me.

On the rare occasions he did come back, he left early and returned late. I knew he was there only by the sound of his breathing in the dark.

That made it easier for me to pack up and leave.

Clothes, toiletries, a few odds and ends.

None of it even filled a single suitcase, and I couldn't think of anything else to add.

In three years of marriage, I'd rarely bought anything for myself.

Besides basic living expenses, my biggest spending had been on gifts for Liam.

I'd always pitied him for being cast aside by his family. When it came to saving for a house, I cut back only on myself and did everything I could to make his life a little better.

But it still wasn't enough for him. He'd rather take Noah's name than give up the chance to become CEO of Brooks Group.

I forced myself to understand his obsession with the family fortune, but I didn't want to stand by him anymore.

The suitcase never did get full. I dragged it to the couch and sat there, staring blankly at the apartment.

It was small, just one bedroom and a living room, but every corner held traces of the life Liam and I had built together.

The cream-colored wallpaper was a shade we'd spent ages picking out.

The tablecloth was a pattern I'd chosen especially because he liked it.

The throw pillow on the couch was one we had sewn together. His stitches had been so crooked that I had added a few of my own.

I didn't realize I was crying until my collar was soaked through.

I was still going to leave this "home" we'd built together.

When the tears finally ran dry, I reached for my phone to call Liam and talk about the divorce.

But his call came through first.

"Babe, don't look at anything online right now. I'll handle it. Just stay home for the next few days and don't go to work. Do what I'm asking, okay?"

He hung up before I could respond. While I was still confused, a news alert popped up on my screen.

POPULAR INFLUENCER'S RELATIONSHIP ROCKED BY AFFAIR: POWER COUPLE IN CRISIS!

My hands shaking, I tapped the link.

Chloe had somehow gotten evidence that Liam and I were living together and had gone on a livestream, crying about being cheated on.

Because she regularly posted couple videos with Liam and had a modest following, the story exploded online. Every trending topic was about them.

My personal information was dug up, and countless people were attacking me with the most vicious words imaginable.

[Homewreckers and their whole families should drop dead!]

[How shameless can you be? You knew he had a fiancee and still went after him.]

[Look at yourself. As if someone like you could compete with Chloe for a man.]

Harassing calls and hate messages flooded my phone faster than I could block or delete them.

After pulling out my SIM card with trembling hands, I finally got a moment of quiet.

I'd never known words could hit that hard. The flood of abuse buried my phone like a blizzard.

But I was Liam's legal wife! I was the one who'd been by his side all along! Why was I the one being attacked? I refused to accept it.

I opened my laptop, uploaded our three-year story and our marriage certificate to my social media account, and tried to set the record straight.

But less than thirty seconds after the post went up, my account was suspended.

Seconds later, Liam called.

"Iris, didn't I tell you to stay out of it? Can you stop being so selfish? Did you even think about what would happen to me if you posted all that?"

Something in his words hit me wrong immediately.

"You shut down my account?"

He admitted it outright.

"I just didn't want you doing something reckless."

I couldn't hold back. My voice rose.

"So I'm just supposed to sit here and take it?!"

Liam didn't seem to care.

"A few mean comments never killed anyone. Just tough it out. I'll talk to Chloe."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Liam, do you have any idea how terrifying it is to be harassed online like this?"

But he still didn't think he'd done anything wrong. Instead, he turned it back on me.

"It's just a few nasty comments. Stop making such a big deal out of it. You deal with rude clients at work all the time, don't you? Once this blows over, everything will be fine."

I bit down on my lip so hard I tasted blood.

The abuse hadn't made me cry. The harassing calls hadn't made me cry.

But now, I couldn't stop the tears.

"Liam, I want a divorce."

The day after Chloe left, Liam found me.I was leaving the office when I heard a group of young women whispering about the handsome guy over there. I followed their gaze without thinking and locked eyes with Liam.He had dark circles under his eyes, stubble he hadn't shaved clean, and looked much thinner. He looked worn down."Babe..."I cut him off."I told you to stop calling me that."But he pressed on shamelessly."But we're not divorced yet. You're still my wife."I didn't want to have this conversation outside my office, so I brought him back to my place.Inside, he looked around cautiously."Have you been okay?"I stepped back, keeping my distance."I'm fine. But I don't want to make small talk. What do you want?"A flash of hurt crossed his eyes, but he held himself together and told me why he'd come."I heard Chloe came to see you. Did she give you a hard time?"I was puzzled."No, she didn't. Is that really why you're here?"Liam shook his head. He looked like he wanted to re

I didn't expect Chloe to show up at my door. When I opened the door, she stood there with her chin lifted, still carrying that air of superiority, though her face looked drawn."Chloe? How did you find me? What do you want?"She looked me up and down."I didn't pay much attention to you last time. This time I wanted a closer look, to figure out what you have that I don't."I stared back, confused."What do you mean, what I have?"She didn't answer."Aren't you going to invite me in for a drink?"Once inside, I poured her a glass of water and nothing more."Are you going to tell me why you're here?"She took the glass and finally spoke."Noah, or Liam, or whatever his name is. We broke off the engagement."I froze for a second."You know?"Chloe scoffed."He told me himself. Said he's not Noah, he's Liam, and he wants to call off the engagement.""I never thought the Brooks family would pull something like this.""But I did like him. I didn't care if he was Liam or Noah, as long as it w

With a solid resume, I quickly found a job in the new city. All those projects I'd fought to land, driven by the dream of buying a house with Liam, had become the very thing that gave me the confidence to leave him.Once I'd settled in, I finally had the headspace to deal with our joint account. He used to transfer his entire paycheck to me every month, and I'd managed our savings carefully, never wanting to let him down.As of today, there was $139,000 in the account.Just a month ago, I'd happily told Liam that if we kept at it, we'd have enough for a down payment soon. One month later, I sat going through transaction records, calculating his share to the cent.Including the returns on our savings over the years, I owed him exactly $71,896.57.For the man he'd become, that probably wasn't even enough to buy Chloe a handbag she liked. But for me, it was a fortune, and a debt I needed to settle down to the last cent.I wouldn't take a penny more than my share, and I wouldn't shortchang

I moved to a new city and got a new phone number. The day after I left, Liam flooded me with messages and calls.I didn't answer. I just watched the calls ring out in silence. He had Liam's face, Liam's voice, Liam's mannerisms. But he didn't have Liam's heart.I didn't want to talk to him, but I still read his messages.Liam had found the divorce papers I'd left behind, but he refused to sign.He apologized and said he knew he was wrong. Everything about me online had been scrubbed clean. He said the downtown penthouse was ready to be transferred to my name. All I had to do was come back and sign.He asked if I'd changed my number and if I could give him the new one. He'd washed the tablecloth and repaired the lock Chloe had broken. The apartment looked just like it used to. All that was missing was me.Come home? A beat passed before Liam asked in disbelief."...What did you say?"I said it again."I said I want a divorce."He finally took me seriously."Babe, don't joke about something like that.""I'm not joking.""I'm not signing divorce papers."I frowned."What makes you think you get a say?"He paused, dodging my question."Just hang in there a little longer. Once this dies down, things can go back to the way they were.""We've been married for three years. You can't just walk away.""Without you, I never would have made it this far. I can't lose you."Liam's voice was full of grief, but my chest hurt more.I made one last demand."Then let me tell the truth."He refused."No. Absolutely not.""I can't let anyone find out I'm not Noah. This is for our future too.""In a few days, I'll put that penthouse downtown in your name. Then we'll finally have a home.""Babe, just do what I'm asking and trust me. I'll handle everything."He hung up before I could argue.I sat on the couch in a daze,
