The Council Table

The Council Chamber of the Ligurian Maritime Syndicate sat inside the stone walls of Palazzo San Giorgio in Genoa.

Vaulted timber ceilings rose above an oval table of polished walnut. Five men sat around the board representing northern shipping families. Candles flickered in iron sconces along the walls, throwing light across old paintings of merchant galleys.

Don Salvatore Vanezi sat at the western end of the table, arms folded. Dante Moretti sat at the eastern end in a dark suit. Elena sat to Dante's right, a black binder open before her.

"We convene to vote on Savona basin stability. Don Dante married into a bankrupt house, disrupted tugboat union contracts, and brought federal auditors into harbor precincts. His leadership breeds chaos. I move for temporary council receivership over the Moretti charter."

The senior counselor from La Spezia leaned forward.

"Receivership marks a drastic measure, Salvatore. Dante’s family held the Savona charter for three generations."

"His father held it with honor. Dante holds it with a child’s arrogance and an accountant wife who lectures court bailiffs in public lobbies."

Dante rested his elbows on the walnut table, hands clasped.

"My father held the charter with honor, Salvatore. While he lay dying, you stole six hundred thousand dollars a month from the regional fuel pool."

Silence fell over the room. Candles flickered in the draft.

"A baseless slander."

Dante tapped the black binder in front of Elena. She opened the cover and passed three identical copies of an audited financial report to the senior counselors.

"These represent verified bank statements for Albatros Marine, a Malta shell corporation. For three years, every fuel barge operating in Savona paid a twelve percent surcharge into an offshore account in Valletta. Salvatore Vanezi's brother-in-law holds beneficial ownership of Albatros Marine."

"She lies!"

"We hold a notarized deposition signed by Bruno Rossini two hours ago. Bruno detailed how Gianni paid bribes to bypass fuel safety checks at Pier 6. You stole from the syndicate fuel pool and compromised the safety of the northern fleet to line your pockets."

The senior counselor from La Spezia read the Malta bank statements, face darkening. He looked at Salvatore.

"Is this true, Salvatore?"

Salvatore opened his mouth, but paper evidence blocked his defense. Transaction hashes backed every audited number.

"Under Article 22 of the Syndicate Code, any member embezzling from the shared fuel pool forfeits his voting seat instantly. I move to strip Vanezi Logistics of council standing."

The three senior counselors conferred in low tones for twenty seconds. The counselor from La Spezia raised his right hand.

"The motion carries. Salvatore Vanezi forfeits his council seat pending a full tribunal audit. The Savona charter remains entirely under the authority of Don Dante Moretti."

Salvatore stood frozen, face pale. He glared at Dante and Elena.

"You think paper ledgers protect you when the docks go dark?"

"Vacate the chamber, Salvatore."

Salvatore shoved his chair back and marched out of the vaulted room, footsteps echoing down the stone corridor.

Two hours later, night settled cold over the Moretti villa in Savona.

A fire crackled in the stone hearth of the villa library, casting golden light across shelves of leather-bound books. Dante stood near the window holding a glass of Scotch, shirt collar unbuttoned to reveal the pale scar on his neck.

Elena sat in a deep leather armchair by the fire, laptop open on her knees as she finalized port authority merger filings.

Dante walked over and set a small glass of sparkling water on the side table beside her chair.

"You handled the council well today, Elena."

"Numbers handled the council. You provided Bruno's deposition. I ensured the bank transfers admitted no denial."

Dante took a slow sip of Scotch, watching her in the firelight. Initial hostility had transformed into pragmatic trust built on shared competence.

"Salvatore refuses to accept losing his council seat. He lost legal leverage today, which means he turns to physical force next."

Elena closed her laptop.

"Gianni keeps men posted near the eastern container yard."

"You show no fear?"

Elena stood up, taking the glass of water from the table. She looked him directly in the eye, posture unyielding.

"I spent five years watching my father run from reality. I do not fear a fight, Don Moretti, as long as we keep our ledgers clean and our guard up."

Dante let out a low laugh, a genuine smile breaking across his face. He raised his glass toward her in a quiet toast.

"To clean ledgers and clear sight, Mrs. Moretti."

Elena clinked her glass against his.

"To the war ahead, Don Dante."
