Chapter 3

Author: Whiskers
I eagerly replied, "Because I like you, Sasha."

I offered my heart to her on a silver plate.

She went silent for a while and frowned.

"You want to be my boyfriend, but I've only just started out on my career. We can only afford to date in secret. Won't you feel upset about it?

"You're a really good person, Arthur, but I really can't give you anything else…"

My love for her was pure and ardent, and I wasn't afraid of any hardships then. I said, "I don't mind. I'm willing to go through any hardship as long as I can be with you.

"I will help you with your dreams, Sasha. I'll also wait for you to slowly fall in love with me. Can't you just please give me a chance?"

The sunset that day was tinged red, and Sasha stood on tiptoe to gently kiss me on the cheek.

"Okay."

That was the story of how we began dating.

I secretly used my family's resources and networking to pave the way for her in the business industry. She quickly rose to fame with a successful business investment, becoming a hot, up-and-coming, rising star in the business world.

At first, even though her feelings for me didn't run deep, she was still respectful, caring, and understanding toward me. I also always stayed by her side throughout her career struggles.

I even protected her at business social engagements and parties where the other businesspeople would try to make her drink excessively by drinking all of the alcohol meant for her instead, causing me to throw up uncontrollably in the streets late at night.

Once, I suffered from a serious stomach hemorrhage and had to be rushed to the hospital.

That time, she held my hand and spoke in a tender voice tinged with heartache.

"Let's get married, Arthur. I will definitely achieve great success, and even if I can never fall in love with you, I promise that I will never hurt you."

Now, 12 years had passed. We began seeing each other at home less and less. Eventually, she had no more feelings left for me other than disgust.

She often spoke harshly to me, and her hurtful words would pierce into my heart like a sharp knife every single time.

Sasha's pregnancy report was the final nail in the coffin—the final knife that plunged straight through my heart, the very one that had loved her for years but was now riddled with holes.

I smiled with tears in my eyes and replied to her text message.

"Let's get a divorce, Sasha Ramirez."

Sasha still never responded to my text the next morning, and I highly suspected that she didn't even bother reading my messages after all.

Meanwhile, Gavin uploaded new photos onto his Instagram stories.

His hair was meticulously styled, revealing his sharp, chiseled jawline, and he wore a bespoke black suit. The emerald watch on his wrist gleamed coldly in the sunlight.

I knew that watch all too well. It was the only keepsake that my mother, Donna Bryant, had left for me after her passing. It was very precious and irreplaceable in my heart.

I felt my heart sinking as I ran over to the safe and opened it. As expected, the emerald watch was missing.

A chill instantly spread all throughout my body. Nobody else knew the combination to that safe aside from Sasha and me.

I grabbed my car keys and immediately sped toward the venue where the business event was being held tonight.

When I reached, I saw Sasha chatting happily with a group of business tycoons, completely unaware of my arrival.

Gavin, however, spotted me immediately.

He strode over to me and purposely waved the watch in front of my face.

"Oh? What brings you here looking like this, Arthur? This is really beneath you."

His words were full of contempt as he continued, "You only became her husband because you coincidentally got to know her just a few years earlier than I did. But now, you're nothing but an old man weathered away by time.

"How dare you show your tired old face in such a high-class event like this? You'd better get out of here, lest you become the laughingstock of the century!"

I was furious when I saw him treating Mom's belongings in such a clumsy, casual manner. Anger surged within me. I then raised my arm and punched him right in the face.

"Give me back my watch!"

Sylvester came up to me and asked cautiously, "Should we continue following up on her, Mr. Fleming?""There's no need," I said, flipping through the documents in my hand."They're already tearing each other apart. We just need to sit back and observe."However, I still sent Sylvester to the hospital on an errand to check on them. There was a complex look on his face when he returned."Apparently, Gavin escaped and absconded with the last of Sasha's savings."Everything turned out just as I'd expected. Gavin was nothing but a leech and a parasite, after all. And since Sasha was no longer a good enough host for him, naturally, he had to look for his next target elsewhere.I then asked, "What about that rich old lady he slept with?""Her husband received the photos and got really furious," Sylvester said, hesitating for a while. "I heard that he hired someone to chop off one of Gavin's legs."I nodded and gestured for him to leave. The office was quiet once more. I went over to

I could hear Sasha's voice tinged with helplessness on the other end of the line as she pleaded with me."Arthur… I'm begging you please, please can't you let me go? At least give me some time, for the sake of our past relationship. I really don't have the means to afford paying the massive penalty for breach of contract."She was only acting subservient with me because her business partners were all demanding contract terminations after her massive scandal, and her cash flow completely dried up.The only assets she had left were the luxury villa and sports car she'd bought for Gavin, but even so, they were difficult for her to liquidate, especially with such immense pressure from the public. There was a hint of mockery in my voice as I said sarcastically, "But aren't you a big business star after all? You said that you'd be able to make a comeback. That was your promise."And get your facts straight, Sasha Ramirez. You and Gavin were the ones who chose to expose your marriage and

"Okay."My expression was calm, composed, and neutral.Gavin's eyes were full of disdain as he covered his mouth and chuckled softly."Stop pretending you don't care. You're seriously thinking that you can win Sasha's heart back by playing the role of the magnanimous ex-husband?"Forget about it. We have already secretly registered our marriage, and we're going to make a public announcement on our social media account later on. You don't even have a chance."I ignored him and walked away. I was too worried that I wouldn't be able to stop myself from laughing out loud if I were to stay with him for another second.Initially, my original plan was to publicly reveal the concrete evidence of Sasha's extramarital affair and business fraud before the awards ceremony began. I just hadn't expected that Gavin and Sasha weren't able to hold their horses after all.I sat in the VIP section of the hall, where numerous investors, producers, and familiar business partners greeted me.At the

Karen's face turned absolutely black as soon as she heard what I said. She quickly retorted, "You're both already divorced. And wasn't it all because you were a good-for-nothing leech?"And since you're divorced, there's no need for you to be confrontational toward Sasha, Arthur Fleming! Now give back all of my daughter's assets and properties that she earned by herself!" she demanded."I saved your life once," I said expressionlessly.Karen was just about to make things hard for me when she heard what I said, and her face turned ashen at once. She looked like she'd just eaten a mouthful of shit.Gavin flew into a temper at once. "Stop bringing that up every single time, Arthur! Sasha had already married you in return! You're both even now!""Well, since I'm even with her now, then what's the point of you guys coming to see me here now?"Karen continued probing me. "Arthur, I know that you've done us a huge favor in the past. It was wrong for Sasha to cheat on you, but are you r

Sylvester frowned and asked, "Sir, do you even know what you're saying?"Gavin pointed at my nose and spoke even more haughtily than ever."This man is Sasha Ramirez's ex-husband! He's definitely up to no good coming here to our company!"I might just be a personal secretary, but I am still Sasha's future husband, and I have the right to fire this lowly employee and make sure that he will never survive in the industry ever again! Otherwise, I'll make sure you all face the consequences!"His face beamed with smugness at the end of his little Ted talk.Everyone's eyes were on me. When Gavin realized that nobody was paying him any heed, he continued with his tirade."This company relies entirely on Sasha to make money! Everything I say is law! Fire this bastard immediately!"The directors then exchanged glances with one another, the displeasure evident on their faces.Still, they all knew that this company had been specifically established for Sasha alone, so nobody dared to speak

I didn't ask for much in the divorce agreement. That was because I preferred watching Sasha lose everything she once had to accepting charity handouts from her.Ultimately, Gavin took over my spot because he was the father of Sasha's child, and Sasha finally agreed to divorce me.Gavin also turned up at the courthouse on the day of our divorce. He held her tightly in his arms, as if he were afraid that I would snatch her away from him if he weren't careful. As soon as the divorce certificates were issued, Gavin heaved a visible sigh of relief. Then, while Sasha wasn't around, he sashayed up to me and began provoking me."You should be grateful that a spineless, cowardly, good-for-nothing leech like you even managed to get Sasha all to yourself for such a long time!"But still… I feel so sorry for you. To think that you never got to have a child of your own despite being married to her for so many years."Remember this—I feel so ashamed to even refer to you as her ex-husband becau
