Chapter 3: The Wedding

The ceremony was exactly as small and exactly as cold as Nathaniel had promised. Forty guests, a private chapel upstate, white flowers chosen by someone on his staff because Sienna hadn’t had the heart to choose them herself. She wore her mother’s veil and her own grief like a second dress underneath the first, and when she walked down the aisle toward a man who was marrying her the way other men signed leases, she kept her chin up because forty people, investors, board members, a scattering of relatives from both sides who hadn’t spoken to each other in years, were watching to see if she’d break.

She didn’t break. She had promised herself she wouldn’t, standing in the small dressing room an hour earlier while her aunt fussed with the veil and pretended not to notice Sienna’s hands shaking. This was a business transaction wearing the shape of a wedding. She could survive a business transaction. She’d survived worse.

Nathaniel was waiting for her at the altar in a black suit so perfectly cut it looked almost unfair, his expression composed into something that might, to a stranger, have passed for warmth. Only Sienna, walking toward him with her father’s absence sitting like a stone in her chest, could see how carefully constructed it was, the practiced angle of his mouth, the stillness of a man who had learned long ago how to give a room exactly what it needed to see.

The officiant’s words blurred together. Sienna caught fragments, in sickness, in health, until and found herself distracted by smaller things instead: the warmth of Nathaniel’s hand when he finally took hers, steadier than she expected, and the fact that up close, without an audience of one, his eyes weren’t as flat and cold as they seemed from across a boardroom table. There was something moving underneath the surface of him. She didn’t yet know what.

She said the words when it was her turn. She let him slide the ring onto her finger, and his hands, she noticed distantly, were steadier than hers.

“You may kiss the bride.”

It was brief. Efficient. Rehearsed, she told herself, the kind of kiss two people gave each other when an audience demanded proof of a marriage neither of them had chosen. His mouth against hers for exactly as long as the moment required and not a second longer.

And still, still, something in her chest lit up and refused to go out. A small, unwelcome spark that had no business existing between two people who’d signed a contract instead of falling in love, that made no sense given everything she knew about who he was and what he’d done to her family. She felt it anyway, sharp and sudden, in the half second before he pulled back.

She hated that she noticed it. She hated more that, pulling back, she caught him noticing it too, a flicker of surprise crossing his face before the careful blankness slid back into place, like a door closing on a room he hadn’t meant to let her see into. For just a moment, Nathaniel Voss looked less like a man who’d calculated every outcome of this marriage in advance and more like a man who’d just been caught off guard by his own reaction.

“Congratulations, Mrs. Voss,” he murmured, just for her, his voice low enough that only she could hear it. Then he turned to face the cameras with a smile so convincing that no one in that chapel could have guessed it wasn’t real, the same practiced ease he brought to every room, every negotiation, every performance the world demanded of him.

Sienna smiled too. She had learned, over the last three days, that she was good at that, good at performing exactly what a room required of her, a skill she’d inherited from a father who’d spent thirty years running a company while grief and illness ate away at him behind closed doors. She only wondered, walking back down the aisle on the arm of a man who was now legally her husband and had never once asked what she wanted from any of this, how long she’d have to keep performing before it stopped feeling like a performance at all.

At the reception, small, quiet, more business function than celebration, she watched him move through the room the way he moved through everything: efficiently, purposefully, shaking hands and accepting congratulations with the same measured warmth he’d shown at the altar. It wasn’t until much later, when most of the guests had gone and the two of them stood alone for the first time all evening near the emptied dance floor, that he said something that wasn’t performance at all.

“Your father would have hated this,” he said quietly, not quite looking at her. “The idea of it. Me, standing where I’m standing.”

Sienna hadn’t expected honesty from him. She wasn’t sure what to do with it.

“Probably,” she admitted.

“For what it’s worth,” Nathaniel said, “I don’t think he was entirely wrong to hate the idea of me.”

And then, before she could ask what he meant by that, he excused himself, leaving her standing alone in her wedding dress in a room that no longer had anyone in it to perform for.

They didn’t have to go looking for him. Marcus was back within the hour, security notifying Nathaniel that his cousin had returned to the building alone, asking to speak with him privately, no lawyer, no witnesses requested, nothing that suggested a man preparing to fight the accusation further. Sienna watched the security feed over Nathaniel’s shoulder, both of them tense, unsure whether this meant surrender or something far more dangerous. He found them in the study this time, not the boardroom, and stood in the doorway for a long moment before he spoke, something in his posture entirely different from the composed, unbothered man who’d walked out an hour earlier. He looked, Sienna thought, like a man who’d finally set down something he’d been carrying so long he’d forgotten its weight.“I’m not going to deny it,” he said quietly. “Not to you. Not anymore. I’m tired, Nathaniel. Twenty years is a long time to carry something like this.”Marcus didn’t confess easily, even then. He tri

The false lead went out through a source they knew Marcus monitored closely, a junior board member who owed Cole a favor, mentioning offhand at a lunch meeting that new evidence had surfaced pointing toward a different Voss relative entirely, someone with far less to lose than Marcus if the finger of suspicion landed elsewhere. Cole had chosen the source carefully, someone gossip prone enough that the information would travel quickly through the right channels without anyone realizing they’d been deliberately used.It took less than forty eight hours for Marcus to move.He requested an emergency meeting with Nathaniel, framed as concern about the company’s stability given the ongoing scandal, and Sienna watched from the adjoining room, recording equipment carefully hidden, Cole and a discreet security team standing by, her pulse hammering loud enough in her ears that she worried, absurdly, it might somehow be audible through the wall, as her cousin in law sat across from her husband a

They spent the next week building a plan with Cole’s careful, quiet help.Every meeting happened somewhere different.Sometimes in the study.Sometimes in Cole’s office after hours.Once in a private conference room borrowed under another company’s name.Nathaniel refused to let a pattern develop. If Marcus was watching them as closely as they suspected, routine was their enemy. The plan itself was deceptively simple. They would stop chasing Marcus.Instead, they would make Marcus chase them.“He thinks the forged bank records worked,” Nathaniel said one evening, spreading a timeline across the study desk that had become the center of everything they shared. It was the same desk where they’d first uncovered inconsistencies in her father’s contracts. The same desk where he’d trusted her enough to let her help. The same desk where their marriage had quietly stopped being a contract and become something real.“He believes we’re distracted,” Nathaniel continued. “He thinks we’re questioni

The name on the incorporation papers was Marcus Voss.Nathaniel’s own cousin.Priscilla’s son.A man who had sat across from Nathaniel at family holidays for thirty years, who had offered a stiff, formal handshake at the wedding before disappearing into the crowd, a man so comfortably ordinary that neither Nathaniel nor Sienna had ever thought to look at him twice.Yet there it was.His signature.Faded by time but unmistakably real. For a long moment, nobody spoke.Nathaniel remained frozen, staring at the document as though refusing to blink might somehow change the name written across the page.“He would have been twenty three when this was filed,” he said at last, the words flat and mechanical. “Fresh out of business school. Ambitious. Constantly living in my father’s shadow.”He let out a humorless laugh.“I never thought about what that must have felt like.”Sienna stayed beside him, giving him the silence he needed.“He was always the overlooked one,” Nathaniel continued. “My f

It was not Marcus Voss.Sienna blinked once, convinced she had read the signature wrong. Then she looked again. The elegant handwriting at the bottom of the incorporation papers read clearly.Priscilla Evelyn Voss. For several long seconds, the room was silent.Nathaniel didn’t move.He simply stared at the page, his breathing slow and unnaturally controlled.Cole quietly closed the folder.“I verified it three different ways before I called you,” he said. “The signature matches property deeds, trust documents, and probate filings from the same period. There isn’t any doubt.”“No,” Nathaniel said quietly. It wasn’t denial. It sounded more like grief.“My aunt inherited money from my grandfather. She never needed shell companies.”“Need and motive aren’t always the same thing,” Cole replied gently.Nathaniel shook his head.“You don’t know her.”“I’ve known her for thirty years.”“Not like I have.”Cole sighed.“I hope you’re right.”Sienna couldn’t stop looking at the signature.Image

  • Married to My Enemy    Chapter 21: What Almost Broke

The days that followed were the calm before another storm, though neither of them recognized it for what it was.Nathaniel did not raise his voice after reading the message. Somehow that frightened Sienna more than anger would have.“What did you do?” he asked again, his tone measured, every word carefully controlled. She closed her eyes.“I went to see Marcus.”The silence that followed seemed to swallow the entire study.Nathaniel slowly released her and stood, taking two steps toward the window before stopping. Rain clouds gathered outside, turning the evening sky gray.“You went alone.”“Yes.”“You didn’t tell anyone.”“No.”“You confronted him.”“I asked about his mother’s accountant.”Nathaniel let out a slow breath, his shoulders rising before falling again.“Sienna.”There was disappointment in her name, not accusation.“I know.”“You promised we wouldn’t do anything alone anymore.”“I know.”“And after everything that’s happened, after Thomas, after the break in, after someon
