Sienna signed the contract on a Thursday, one day earlier than she'd promised, because waiting any longer felt like giving the fear more room to grow.

She'd spent the night before reading every page twice, then a third time, hunting for the clause that would let her breathe easier, some exit, some protection, some proof that she wasn't simply handing her entire life to a man who'd spent a decade trying to ruin her family. She hadn't found one. The contract was airtight in the particular way only something drafted by people who never lost could be airtight. Eighteen months of operational control. Full merger of assets. A prenuptial clause that protected the Voss family's holdings with surgical precision and said almost nothing about hers.

She'd signed it anyway, because the alternative was watching eight hundred people lose their jobs and her father's name disappear from a building he'd bled for.

The signing itself took four minutes. Nathaniel arrived exactly on time, said almost nothing, and watched her hand move across the page with an expression she couldn't read, not triumph, not relief, just the flat attentiveness of a man confirming a deal had closed the way he'd expected it to. He didn't offer congratulations. She didn't want them.

"The wedding will be small," he said, sliding his own signed copy back into a leather folder with the kind of care she imagined he gave every legal document that mattered to him. "Two weeks from Saturday. My assistant will send you a list of what's required from your side."

"A list."

"Dress, guest count, the usual." He glanced up, and for the first time since she'd known him, something almost like humor moved behind his eyes — there and gone so fast she nearly missed it. "I assume you don't need help finding a dress."

"I don't need your help with anything," Sienna said, and had the small, petty satisfaction of watching that almost-humor disappear as quickly as it had come, replaced by the flat neutrality he seemed to wear like a second skin.

He stood, buttoned his jacket, and for a moment looked at her the way he had in the lawyer's office, assessing, unreadable, like he was still trying to decide what kind of asset she was going to turn out to be. "You should know," he said, "the press will call this a merger before they call it a marriage. That's fine. Let them. But once the ring is on your hand, you're a Voss in every room that matters. I won't tolerate anything that makes the company look unstable. No public arguments. No headlines about the grieving heiress and her villain husband."

"Is that what you think you are? The villain?"

Something shifted, brief and unreadable, across his face, the first crack she'd seen in two meetings, gone almost before she registered it. "I think," he said carefully, "that it doesn't matter what I am. It matters what the market believes I am. Perception is the only currency that's never devalued."

"That's a sad way to live."

"It's an effective one." He said it without defensiveness, like a fact he'd made peace with a long time ago. "You'll find, Ms. Hartley, that effective and pleasant are rarely the same thing. I stopped choosing pleasant a long time before you knew my name."

She wanted to ask what had made him stop. The question sat on her tongue, too personal for a room that still smelled like legal paper and closed deals, and she swallowed it back down. Whatever had hardened Nathaniel Voss into the man standing in front of her wasn't hers to ask about. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

He left without saying goodbye, the way he seemed to leave every room abruptly, completely, like lingering was a weakness he refused to afford himself. Sienna sat alone in the empty conference room for a long time afterward, staring at her own signature drying on the page beside his, two names now legally bound in a way neither of them had chosen for reasons that had nothing to do with love.

She tried to name the feeling sitting low in her stomach, something tight and unfamiliar, coiled somewhere between dread and a curiosity she didn't want to examine too closely. It took her longer than she wanted to admit that it wasn't only dread.

Every monitor in the room displayed the same words.PRIMARY KEEPER ACTIVATED.Sienna stared at the screens.Amelia didn’t move.Richard smiled.Eleanor looked terrified.Nathaniel stepped closer to Amelia.“What does that mean?”Amelia shook her head.“I don’t know.”Richard laughed.“Yes, you do.”“No.”“You’ve known since you were seven.”Amelia’s breathing quickened.Sienna reached for her hand.“Look at me.”Amelia did.“Whatever this is, you’re not alone.”Richard’s smile faded.“You really believe that?”Sienna turned toward him.“Yes.”“That’s your weakness.”“No.”Nathaniel stepped beside her.“That’s yours.”Richard’s expression hardened. Then the monitors changed.A video appeared.A young Amelia sat inside a glass room. She couldn’t have been more than eight.A man’s voice came through the speakers.“Tell me your name.”The little girl stared at the camera.“Amelia.”“And your purpose?”She hesitated.“To protect the Keeper.”Richard looked at Amelia.“Do you remember?”Ame

The old Hartley estate appeared through the darkness like a memory Sienna had spent years trying to forget. The gates stood open. That was the first thing she noticed. The second was the absence of lights. Her childhood home had always been bright, even at night. Her father hated dark hallways. He used to say a house should never feel like it was hiding something. Now every window was black.Nathaniel’s car slowed.“Nobody lives here,” Martin said through the communication system.Sienna stared at the house.“Someone does.”Amelia sat beside her, silent. Her fingers had not left Sienna’s since they arrived.“That’s where they kept you?”Amelia nodded.“Underground.”Sienna looked at the estate again. She remembered running through these halls as a child. Her father’s study. The library. The garden. She remembered none of the basement.“Why don’t I remember this place?”Amelia looked at her.“Because they didn’t want you to.”Nathaniel glanced at Sienna.“Stay with me.”“I will.”The c

The phone continued ringing.ELEANOR HARTLEY.Sienna stared at the screen.Nobody spoke.Amelia’s hand tightened around hers.“Don’t answer.”Sienna looked at her.“Why?”“Because she knows where we are.”Nathaniel reached for the phone.Sienna stopped him.“No.”He looked at her.“I need to know what she wants.”Amelia shook her head.“You don’t understand.”“I remember that night.”Sienna’s heart pounded.“You said you remembered me.”“I remember her too.”“Your grandmother?”Amelia nodded.“She was there.”Sienna’s breath caught.“At the fire?”“Yes.”The phone stopped ringing. Then immediately started again.Nathaniel looked at the screen.“Answer.”Sienna pressed the button.“Hello?”For several seconds, there was only silence. Then an old woman’s voice came through.“Sienna.”She knew that voice. She had heard it countless times growing up.Her grandmother.“Where are you?”Sienna said nothing.Eleanor sighed.“Your mother has told you everything, hasn’t she?”“Not everything.”

The call had ended. But the voice remained in Sienna’s head.Hello, little sister. She stared at the dark screen of her phone. No one spoke. Then the lights came back on.Elena was crying.Sienna looked at her.“You have a daughter.”Elena’s lips parted.“I didn’t know how to tell you.”“You knew she was alive?”“No.”Her voice broke.“I thought she was dead.”Sienna held up the photograph.“Then why did you say she’s alive?”“Because…”Elena looked at the little girl in the photograph.“I know that picture.”“When was it taken?”“Before I met your father.”Sienna’s heart pounded.“Who is she?”Elena swallowed.“Her name was Amelia.”“Was?”“That’s what I called her.”She lowered her gaze.“The people who took her gave her another name.”Nathaniel stepped closer.“Who took her?”Elena looked at him.“The Keepers.”Sienna’s fingers tightened around the photograph.“Why?”“Because they knew she was my weakness.”“And they used her against you.”Elena nodded.“Arthur spent years trying t

Nathaniel didn’t move. For several seconds, the room seemed to forget how to breathe.“My father?”Martin nodded.“The order came from Elias Voss.”Nathaniel’s face hardened.“You’re lying.”“I wish I was.”Sienna watched him closely. She had seen Nathaniel angry before. This was different. There was no rage in his expression.Only disbelief.“My father loved Arthur.”Martin opened the folder.“That’s what everyone believed.”He removed another photograph and placed it on the desk.Arthur.Elias.Richard.And a fourth man. They were standing outside an old building. On the back of the photograph was a date.Twenty-six years ago.Nathaniel picked it up.“Where did you get this?”“Richard’s private records.”“You searched them?”“After the archive collapsed.”Martin turned another page.“There’s more.”A handwritten document followed.Nathaniel read the first few lines. His fingers tightened around the paper.Sienna stepped closer.“What does it say?”He didn’t answer. She looked down.

“Celeste.”The name left Elena’s lips like a confession.Sienna’s body went rigid.Nathaniel immediately moved in front of her.“Stay behind me.”A soft laugh came from the staircase.“You still do that.”Celeste appeared slowly, one hand resting against the railing. She looked untouched. No blood. No sign that she had just escaped a collapsing underground archive. Her gaze moved across the room before settling on Elena.“You really thought you could keep hiding?”Elena’s face had gone pale.“I wasn’t hiding.”“You were.”Celeste descended another step.“For twenty-four years.”Sienna stepped around Nathaniel.“What are you talking about?”Celeste looked at her.“Ask your mother.”“I am asking you.”Celeste smiled.“Then perhaps you should finally hear the truth from both of us.”Elena shook her head.“Don’t.”Celeste’s expression hardened.“Why?”“Afraid she’ll hate you?”Sienna looked at Elena.“Mum?”Elena’s eyes filled with tears.Celeste reached the bottom of the stairs.“Your mo
