Chapter 2 I Actually Married Him

مؤلف: Palma W
Everyone thought I'd lost my mind, that I was just throwing a tantrum at my family. My father sent his driver after me and ordered me to return to the estate immediately. His assistant relayed the message: "Come back now, and tomorrow we'll publicly say last night was a misunderstanding. Otherwise, don't ever think about coming home again."

I shut the car door. "Suit yourself."

The next day, I went with the stranger to the county clerk's office for a marriage license and a civil ceremony. I didn't learn his name until we filled out the paperwork: Adrian Augustus. The surname sounded familiar, but I hadn't slept all night. My head was full of the ring on Claire's hand and the altered project files, and I couldn't think straight.

We'd barely finished the forms when my father's lawyer burst in. "Ms. Sterling, Mr. Sterling believes you're emotionally unstable and unable to make a major decision. He wants you to postpone the ceremony."

I looked up. "In plain English."

The lawyer paused. "He wants you to stop."

"Tell him I'm a legal adult. I don't need the Sterling board of directors to vote on who I marry."

The lawyer lowered his voice. "This will destroy your trust inheritance and the family's reputation. Are you really willing to sacrifice everything over a moment of anger?"

I signed my name. "Tell him that using my mother's estate as leverage to control me is disgusting."

The clerk pronounced us married and stamped the certificate. From that moment on, Adrian and I were legally married.

Ten minutes after we left, the notifications flooded in. Family credit cards, canceled. Estate access, revoked. Vehicle privileges, rescinded. Foundation account, forcibly logged out.

At the bottom was a notice from the independent trust company: my father had petitioned to freeze my access to trust records and contracts, claiming "the heir has suffered severe emotional distress and may make irrational asset decisions." Attached was a statement in Ethan's handwriting: "Evelyn became emotionally volatile after the engagement changed and impulsively married an unidentified man. She is not fit to participate in foundation decisions at this time."

I stared at his signature, my nails digging into my palms. Last night he'd stolen my engagement. Today he'd put in writing that I was mentally unfit.

Adrian stood beside me. He didn't get angry on my behalf. He only asked, "Do you need a lawyer?"

"You know a lawyer?"

"A few."

"Not yet." It wasn't that I didn't want to investigate. I just refused to escape my father's control only to hand every decision to another man. And frankly, I didn't think Adrian could help me. Everyone thought he was homeless. Men like that turned into princes only in fairy tales.

The hotel was swarmed with reporters, so checking in was impossible. Adrian ended up taking me to a state beach campground. His car was a beat-up SUV, but the trunk was neatly packed with a tent, sleeping bags, first-aid supplies, and professional communications gear. He set up camp with quick, practiced movements and had everything ready in under ten minutes.

No flowers. No gifts. Just a campfire and a cup of hot coffee. Late that night, he gave me the only thick sleeping bag and sat outside the tent himself.

I lay inside, scrolling through the system notifications again. Before my foundation account was forcibly logged out, someone had accessed it in the middle of the night. Several payment-approval emails I'd never opened were marked "read." Stranger still, I'd been suspended, yet my electronic-signature permissions were still active. Someone had blocked me from reviewing the books while keeping the power to sign documents in my name.

I screenshotted every page.

Adrian lifted the tent flap. "Found something?"

"Someone logged into my account."

"Want to save it?"

"All of it."

He handed me an offline laptop. I copied the screenshots, email timestamps, login records, and permission changes onto it. He didn't ask why. He didn't say "leave it to me." He just plugged in the charger and pushed the coffee a little closer.

In the middle of the night, I was jolted awake by headlights in the distance. Three unmarked black SUVs sat at the edge of the campground, engines running, but no one got out.

I asked Adrian, "Do those people know you?"

He glanced back. "Probably just a patrol."

But since when did campground patrols drive luxury SUVs with glass thick enough to stop a bullet?

Six months later, the Sterling Foundation completed the first phase of restructuring. Richard had lost all management authority. Proceedings involving unlawful detention, coerced signatures, trust violations, and misappropriation of funds were underway. He didn't go broke overnight, but he could no longer use the titles of "father" and "trustee" to control my life.Claire lost the acting chairmanship. Document forgery, evidence tampering, coerced confessions, asset transfers: she faced every charge on her own. Her engagement to Ethan shattered the moment they started blaming each other.Whitmore returned the illegally obtained funds. Ethan was removed by his own board. He sent me many messages afterward, saying he'd only made one mistake. I didn't reply to a single one. Because he'd never made just one mistake. At every moment when he could have chosen me, he'd chosen himself.I didn't go back to Sterling. The Margaret Aid Foundation built an independent board and a public oversight sy

At the joint meeting, Adrian sat in the gallery. Per the conflict-of-interest agreement, he did not participate in any votes.Ethan ultimately handed over the emails and financial records. Not out of conscience. Whitmore couldn't hold on any longer. The records proved Richard had known about Whitmore's cash shortage before the Rose Crown Gala. To preserve the alliance and the partnership, he'd agreed to divert charity funds. Claire submitted the authorization bearing my forged signature. Ethan knowingly accepted money for services that never existed and used it to pay off debts. No one had been deceived. Each of them chose to participate when it benefited them.I submitted my mother's original trust instrument first. The trust company confirmed that I was the sole beneficiary and held final voting authority. Claire's supplemental agreement was invalid. Forensic analysis showed that the signature had been copied from a scan and the paper manufactured after my mother's death. Server reco

Claire didn't concede. She shouted to the press, "Evelyn knew who he was all along! She's been using Augustus to strip Sterling from the start!" Richard followed her lead, calling me my husband's puppet and accusing us of engineering a hostile takeover through marriage. The story pivoted instantly from the homeless-stranger reveal to a new question: Was Augustus using our marriage to seize Sterling? If Adrian froze Sterling's assets now, it would support their claim. I made three public decisions on the spot: Augustus would have no vote or role in the Margaret Trust; an independent board would oversee the new foundation's long-term funding; and regulators and independent counsel would handle all Sterling-related assets, with Adrian excluded from any final disposition.A reporter asked, "Aren't you worried those restrictions could hurt your household's financial interests?""Marriage isn't a power of attorney," I said. "He's my husband. Not my proxy."Once that quote got out, Claire los

My father took the stage first. He announced Claire as the foundation's acting chair, citing my "impulsive marriage and emotional instability" as grounds for my losing the right to represent the family. Claire presented the forged agreement, looking every bit the martyr. "I never wanted to replace my sister. But she's dragging the whole family into her madness over some man no one's ever heard of. I had no choice but to step in."Ethan sidled up to me and dropped his voice. "Once Augustus invests, you'll have to come back to Sterling. What can that broke husband of yours give you besides a tent?"I didn't look at him. "Worry about your own company's debts."His expression had barely shifted when the main doors opened. Every Augustus executive in the room rose. Bank representatives and investment managers followed. The emcee announced, "The owner and chairman of Augustus Holding Group, Mr. Adrian Augustus, has arrived."I turned around. The man walking in wearing a black suit was my hus

Armed with the forged agreement, Claire prepared to sign financing documents on Sterling's behalf at the Manhattan Capital Summit. The trust company had already notified every party that Claire's authority was disputed, so no one could unknowingly rely on her signature. When my father learned of the notice, he sought an emergency injunction. He claimed I was "under the control of my husband and outside investors, using marriage to strip Sterling of its assets." The more mysterious Adrian's identity remained, the more credible the accusation sounded. Adrian suggested revealing himself. I said no. "If you show your hand now, they'll only say I'm using my husband's power to take over.""Then what do you want to do?""You don't participate in trust votes. You don't dispose of any assets on my behalf."He looked at me. "All right.""And if someone at the summit tries to force me to sign?""The only person who signs is you."That was the answer I needed. On the day of the summit, I walked in

The Sterling family trust on file was only a copy. The original was held by an independent trust company in Manhattan.Adrian and I went to verify it. On the way, I asked again. "What exactly is your relationship with the Augustus Group?"He was quiet for a moment. "A deep one.""That's not an answer.""Before the summit, I'll give you everything."I turned to him. "You're allowed to have business secrets. But you can't leave me as the last person in this marriage to learn who my husband is. Protecting me doesn't mean deciding how much I get to know."He didn't say "it's for your own good" the way my father would have. He only said, "That was my mistake."We retrieved the original. Its terms were clear: when I reached adulthood, I automatically received sole voting authority. My father was only the temporary trustee. After my mother's death, no new beneficiaries could be added. Any pledge of trust assets as collateral required my written consent. Claire's supplemental agreement was inv
