Chapter 1 The Crown Falls into a Stranger's Arms

Author: Palma W
I'd known Ethan for twenty years. We'd been together for five. Everyone was certain that tonight, I would place the rose crown in his hands and publicly confirm our engagement, sealing the alliance between our families.

But when I carried the crown onto the stage, the person standing at Ethan's side was Claire. She wore a custom white gown, and on the ring finger of her left hand sat my mother's rose diamond ring.

That ring had vanished three days ago. Now it was on her finger.

The screen behind us had been changed too. Where my name and Ethan's had been, it now read: "Claire Sterling and Ethan Whitmore, Sterling Foundation Co-Ambassadors."

Claire walked toward me, eyes already red and her voice thick with tears. "I'm so sorry, Evelyn. Ethan and I really do love each other. Dad was worried the foundation would be too much for you after the wedding, so he asked me to take some of it off your plate."

I stared at the ring on her hand. "You're helping carry my workload, so you replaced my name and took my mother's ring. Tell me, Claire, does your help always start with taking what's mine?"

Her wounded expression froze for half a second. Then the tears spilled over. "How can you say that to me, Evelyn? Ethan fell for me first! Just because I'm adopted, I don't even get to love someone?"

Ethan immediately pulled her behind him, frowning. "You can't force feelings. Claire is gentler than you, and her image suits the foundation better. We've been together for six months. She was worried about upsetting you the whole time, which is why she didn't tell you. You shouldn't blame her."

Six months.

And through every one of those months, I'd been happily planning our future. All the while, his heart had already belonged to someone else.

The crown dug into my palms. My chest felt like it had been filled with lead, so heavy I could barely breathe.

The crowd below had already erupted. Cameras fired in a frenzy while guests whispered to one another. My father, Richard Sterling, stood in the front row, his face dark as a storm front. "Stop making a scene! Do you want to drag the Sterling name through the mud?"

"The foundation was my mother's legacy. I built the annual plan myself. Did any of you even ask me?"

"She's only helping temporarily!" My father kept his voice low, every word forced through clenched teeth. "Every major donor is here tonight. If you throw a tantrum now, it won't just be your reputation on the line. Give Claire the crown. We'll discuss this at home!"

Ethan leaned in, frowning at me. "You'll inherit all of Sterling someday. Claire has nothing. All she wants is real love and a place at the foundation. Just let her have this, Evelyn. I promise I'll make it up to you."

I looked at him and suddenly felt like a joke. "You're a person, not a piece of old furniture from my family. I may be done with you, but that doesn't make you mine to give away."

"Real love? You were sleeping with me while being with your real love. You're pathetic."

Ethan's expression darkened. "Watch yourself, Evelyn. Without the Whitmore engagement, who do you think would marry a stuck-up princess like you?"

Claire reached for my hand with a show of concern, then drove her shoulder into mine. The crown slipped from my grasp, rolled down the red carpet and off the steps, cleared the railing, and landed in a stranger's arms.

He wore a black coat streaked with mud. A cut marked his temple, and dried blood ran along the side of his face. Security had blocked his way, apparently assuming he was homeless and trying to sneak in.

Someone in the crowd laughed. "The Sterling heiress's crown just landed in some homeless guy's lap."

Ethan laughed too. "Give it up, Evelyn. Don't embarrass yourself further."

I pulled off my engagement gloves, dropped them at his feet, and walked down from the stage.

My father roared behind me. "Evelyn, get back here!"

I didn't look back. I walked up to the stranger and lifted the crown from his arms. Up close, I could see that his clothes were torn and his hair was matted against his dirt-streaked face. But he stood perfectly straight, and his gray-blue eyes were startlingly clear. Hundreds of people were staring, and he didn't look the least bit rattled.

I asked him, "Will you marry me?"

The entire room went silent.

The stranger looked at me. "Do you know who I am?"

"No."

"Then why me?"

I glanced back at the three people on the stage. My heart felt like a frozen lake cracking apart, shattering completely. "You saw what happened. Everyone here thinks you're homeless, and I've lost everything too. Marrying me could make you a target."

He was silent for two seconds. A faint light flickered in his eyes. "As long as this is truly your choice."

"Then I'd be honored to marry you, beautiful lady."

Six months later, the Sterling Foundation completed the first phase of restructuring. Richard had lost all management authority. Proceedings involving unlawful detention, coerced signatures, trust violations, and misappropriation of funds were underway. He didn't go broke overnight, but he could no longer use the titles of "father" and "trustee" to control my life.Claire lost the acting chairmanship. Document forgery, evidence tampering, coerced confessions, asset transfers: she faced every charge on her own. Her engagement to Ethan shattered the moment they started blaming each other.Whitmore returned the illegally obtained funds. Ethan was removed by his own board. He sent me many messages afterward, saying he'd only made one mistake. I didn't reply to a single one. Because he'd never made just one mistake. At every moment when he could have chosen me, he'd chosen himself.I didn't go back to Sterling. The Margaret Aid Foundation built an independent board and a public oversight sy

At the joint meeting, Adrian sat in the gallery. Per the conflict-of-interest agreement, he did not participate in any votes.Ethan ultimately handed over the emails and financial records. Not out of conscience. Whitmore couldn't hold on any longer. The records proved Richard had known about Whitmore's cash shortage before the Rose Crown Gala. To preserve the alliance and the partnership, he'd agreed to divert charity funds. Claire submitted the authorization bearing my forged signature. Ethan knowingly accepted money for services that never existed and used it to pay off debts. No one had been deceived. Each of them chose to participate when it benefited them.I submitted my mother's original trust instrument first. The trust company confirmed that I was the sole beneficiary and held final voting authority. Claire's supplemental agreement was invalid. Forensic analysis showed that the signature had been copied from a scan and the paper manufactured after my mother's death. Server reco

Claire didn't concede. She shouted to the press, "Evelyn knew who he was all along! She's been using Augustus to strip Sterling from the start!" Richard followed her lead, calling me my husband's puppet and accusing us of engineering a hostile takeover through marriage. The story pivoted instantly from the homeless-stranger reveal to a new question: Was Augustus using our marriage to seize Sterling? If Adrian froze Sterling's assets now, it would support their claim. I made three public decisions on the spot: Augustus would have no vote or role in the Margaret Trust; an independent board would oversee the new foundation's long-term funding; and regulators and independent counsel would handle all Sterling-related assets, with Adrian excluded from any final disposition.A reporter asked, "Aren't you worried those restrictions could hurt your household's financial interests?""Marriage isn't a power of attorney," I said. "He's my husband. Not my proxy."Once that quote got out, Claire los

My father took the stage first. He announced Claire as the foundation's acting chair, citing my "impulsive marriage and emotional instability" as grounds for my losing the right to represent the family. Claire presented the forged agreement, looking every bit the martyr. "I never wanted to replace my sister. But she's dragging the whole family into her madness over some man no one's ever heard of. I had no choice but to step in."Ethan sidled up to me and dropped his voice. "Once Augustus invests, you'll have to come back to Sterling. What can that broke husband of yours give you besides a tent?"I didn't look at him. "Worry about your own company's debts."His expression had barely shifted when the main doors opened. Every Augustus executive in the room rose. Bank representatives and investment managers followed. The emcee announced, "The owner and chairman of Augustus Holding Group, Mr. Adrian Augustus, has arrived."I turned around. The man walking in wearing a black suit was my hus

Armed with the forged agreement, Claire prepared to sign financing documents on Sterling's behalf at the Manhattan Capital Summit. The trust company had already notified every party that Claire's authority was disputed, so no one could unknowingly rely on her signature. When my father learned of the notice, he sought an emergency injunction. He claimed I was "under the control of my husband and outside investors, using marriage to strip Sterling of its assets." The more mysterious Adrian's identity remained, the more credible the accusation sounded. Adrian suggested revealing himself. I said no. "If you show your hand now, they'll only say I'm using my husband's power to take over.""Then what do you want to do?""You don't participate in trust votes. You don't dispose of any assets on my behalf."He looked at me. "All right.""And if someone at the summit tries to force me to sign?""The only person who signs is you."That was the answer I needed. On the day of the summit, I walked in

The Sterling family trust on file was only a copy. The original was held by an independent trust company in Manhattan.Adrian and I went to verify it. On the way, I asked again. "What exactly is your relationship with the Augustus Group?"He was quiet for a moment. "A deep one.""That's not an answer.""Before the summit, I'll give you everything."I turned to him. "You're allowed to have business secrets. But you can't leave me as the last person in this marriage to learn who my husband is. Protecting me doesn't mean deciding how much I get to know."He didn't say "it's for your own good" the way my father would have. He only said, "That was my mistake."We retrieved the original. Its terms were clear: when I reached adulthood, I automatically received sole voting authority. My father was only the temporary trustee. After my mother's death, no new beneficiaries could be added. Any pledge of trust assets as collateral required my written consent. Claire's supplemental agreement was inv
