Chapter 8

Author: Bye Gray
I tagged Riley in the family group chat.

"What should we do about this? He must have misunderstood something. What exactly is your relationship with this professional boxer? Is he the man you're seeing on the side? Why is he telling me to keep Samuel in check? What am I supposed to do here?"

After I sent those messages, Riley, who normally loved arguing with me, vanished without a trace.

Samuel tried to stop me, but it was already too late. "Why would you put something like this in the family group chat?"

In the photo, they were holding each other so closely that anyone unaware they were siblings would have found it unsettling.

I waved my phone, looking innocent. "You said not to badmouth people behind their backs, so I took your advice and said it to her face."

Both Samuel and Cole were at a pivotal point in their careers, with promotions within reach. They were busy with a major project for an important client, and their collaboration was widely seen as a sure thing.

Riley accused Samuel of changing completely. He had never cared about money before and never complained about how much she spent. Samuel, in turn, accused Riley of being lazy and spoiled. The things he had once adored in her now felt intolerable and unreasonable.Their son, born of a consanguineous marriage, was diagnosed with significant cognitive impairments; tests reportedly placed his intelligence below that of a Border Collie. One late night, with Riley crying before him, Samuel turned his back and abandoned her completely. He hadn't stopped trying to reach me, but even if he found my address, the gates of my luxury community would have blocked him.As I drove out one day, a scruffy man blocked my path. As I looked closer, I saw it was Samuel. He surged forward, staring intently at my flat stomach."What happened to our child? What did you do to our child?" His frantic words betrayed a sudden obsession with a child he had barely seemed to care about before.I had the sec

I sold it off without hesitation and left him to face the fallout. He and I had never been meant to walk the same path.In my past life, I had forced things to the point of blood and bruises. Now that fate had given me a second chance, all I wanted was to take care of Luna properly.Without the luxury of a permanent home, he and Charlotte were reduced to renting. The soundproofing in most apartment complexes isn't great, and few people go to the lengths I did to properly insulate a room. It wasn't long before complaints started piling up against him. At one point, he was even taken away by the police over allegations of elderly abuse. Even if it had been a misunderstanding, he refused to explain himself, and over time, his reputation suffered. No landlord would tolerate such troublemakers, and they were kicked out without hesitation. He came to see that even the way I looked after Charlotte gave him a rare moment of peace. Without anyone at home, she only caused more destruction.

Words could be frightening. In his pale excuses, he tried to protect Riley, but in doing so, he was bound to anger Cole.Cole had taken so many punches and kicks for him, only to end up with rumors about a questionable same-sex relationship and then lose his job. Clearly, he had been dealt a terrible hand. For days, I could hear him muttering quiet apologies. After I kept Charlotte locked in the study and destroyed several critical documents, he finally lost his temper and tried to strike me.He shoved me, and my lower back collided with the wall."Can't you just take care of Mom properly? All you have to do is stay home and look after her. Is that really so difficult?"I immediately filed for divorce, demanding he walk away with nothing. His carefully maintained image as the perfect gentleman crumbled, leaving him caught up in rumors of ambiguous relationships with both women and men. With Charlotte to care for, he was constantly messy. His clothes were always wrinkled, and even

"There must be some misunderstanding. That boxer is gay. How could he actually be involved with Riley?"Around then, an anonymous private investigator sent a collection of photos to the company's internal inbox. They were all vacation shots of Riley and Samuel. In one, Samuel lay on the ground laughing, while Riley straddled him and leisurely put her lipstick on him. In another, they clung to each other, quietly staring out at the ocean. The photos spread discreetly from one person to another. Everyone struggled to believe that the kind and dependable Samuel could be caught up in something so twisted with his own sister.Samuel and his close colleague were both beaten up. Ironically, Samuel's injuries were lighter, and he returned to work after just a week. The outcome was still disastrous. Clients were furious over the incident, and his promotion fell through. Even his coworkers started looking at him differently.Word leaked from management that his promotion was off the table. T

That explained why both Charlotte and Riley had a habit of screaming like lunatics. The apple clearly didn't fall far from the tree."Apologize to Riley," Samuel said, wearing a grim expression."Don't be so dramatic. I didn't even say anything out of line. Fine, I get it. Riley doesn't like me. I'll head back first, then. Just remember to bring my keys home for me, okay?""Get out!" she snapped from under the covers.I genuinely worried about how someone nearing 30 could still have the emotional maturity of a toddler. Had she been showing early signs of dementia, or was this just who she was?I didn't go straight home. Instead, I headed to a bookstore where I had reserved a spot.During my pregnancy in my previous life, I had wanted to improve myself by earning additional certifications. I even dragged Samuel along, actively helping him prepare documents and applications. He accused me of being overly utilitarian."Actual competence speaks for itself on the job. All this secret
