Chapter 3

Author: Deepwood
Callum's POV

Delia's face darkened, and she slammed her glass down so hard it shattered. Shards flew everywhere, and a few of them cut into my fingers. I didn't feel any pain, though. I just stared silently at Delia, whose face had gone livid.

After that video went viral, the whole Internet called me a rapist. Delia said she believed me, but I often caught her drinking alone on the balcony late at night. We fought constantly during that time, and after I got out of prison, a wall went up between us.

Delia's cold voice pulled me back to the present. "Callum, I'm going to ask you one more time. Back then, did you or did you not rape that woman?"

She didn't raise her voice, but every word cut through me like a knife.

"Delia, you never believed me, did you?"

Her eyes locked on mine. "I just want the truth. That's the only way I can feel okay about remarrying you."

I gave a bitter little laugh, my voice quiet. "I'm not remarrying you. Since you trust Jensen so much, why don't you just be with him?"

Delia scoffed, her voice gentle and cruel at the same time. "Stop being ridiculous. You don't have a job or any income, and you're a useless deadbeat who lives off me. What makes you think you're in any position to leave me?"

After all these years, she'd finally said what she really thought.

"Enough!" Rosalind cut in, clearly displeased, and patted my hand to comfort me. "We finally get to sit down together as a family. Let's not talk about things that'll upset everyone."

She lowered her head and took a bite, and suddenly, her face flushed red as she started coughing nonstop.

"Mom!"

Delia hurried over, then froze and glared at me with pure hatred. "You know perfectly well Mom's allergic to celery! She's too forgetful to keep track, so you put it on her plate on purpose! I call you out once, and you take it out on Mom? How did I never see how vicious you are?"

I was about to tell her it wasn't me, but she'd already lost her patience and shoved me to the floor. Caught off guard, I knocked over the dishes, and a jagged edge sliced into my palm, blood welling up at once.

Delia paused, then coldly looked away and turned to help Rosalind up. "Mom, don't worry. Jensen and I will take you to the hospital."

I was too worried to stay behind, so I followed them.

At the hospital, Rosalind's allergic reaction eased, and after the doctors gave her medication, she stayed in a room for observation. Through the wall, I heard Jensen apologizing.

"This is all my fault. I didn't know your mom was allergic to celery."

"It's fine. It's not your fault," Delia said gently. "Callum was there anyway, so we'll just say he did it. Mom's always had a soft spot for him, so she won't give him a hard time."

So that was it. To protect the man she loved, I was the fall guy she could push forward whenever she needed one.

I stood there in a daze as blood trickled down my palm and dripped onto the floor, and I went cold all over.

Over the following days, Delia and Jensen were all over TV. They went on reality shows together and flaunted their romance for the cameras, and when they visited a children's home together, the photo they took with one of the little kids made them look just like a family of three.

Late one night, Jensen posted a photo from a hotel. Delia was fast asleep, curled up against his chest, and both of them were covered in red marks.

Even though he deleted it within seconds, sharp-eyed fans still caught it. The comments were full of sweet well-wishes, and some people even asked when they were planning to have kids.

I smiled as the pain slowly faded, and what it left behind was mostly relief.

On the last day of the month, Delia called me, her voice hoarse and strained. "Come to the city hall. I'm divorcing Jensen today and remarrying you. Callum, isn't this what you wanted?"

I hung up and didn't go.

A little while later, someone kicked my door open. Delia charged in with red-rimmed eyes and grabbed my arm.

"I already said I'd remarry you! And just to get back at Jensen, you had him dragged off to an underground fight club? How could you be so vicious? If anything happens to him, I swear I'll never let you off the hook!"

Callum's POVAt first, I didn't want anyone to know Maren and I were together. She was an A-list star now, several times more famous than Delia. Marrying me had already hurt Delia's image back then, let alone what it could do to Maren now.Maren never cared, though. Whenever she had time off at home, she'd drag me out to the mall and the movies, and we went on dates just like any ordinary couple. When fans recognized her, she'd greet them with a big smile and squeeze my hand tighter."Let me introduce you. This is my boyfriend."Even when we went out for evening walks and noticed paparazzi following us, she never made me hide. Instead, she'd hold me even tighter and plant a soft kiss on my cheek. The reaction online quickly went from shock to nothing but congratulations."Last time Maren went live, she said she was going after the boy who used to live next door. So it's Mr. Ward! Congrats on finally finding your happiness, Maren!""Honestly, ever since Mr. Ward started dating Ma

  • Married to a Star, Hunted Like a Villain   Chapter 9

Callum's POVI followed Maren back home and thanked her, though I couldn't help feeling a little puzzled. "How did you just show up out of nowhere like that?"She paused for a beat, then answered like it was nothing, "I was just passing by."I laughed despite myself. "That place is way out in the suburbs, and there isn't even a grocery store nearby. How were you just passing by?"Maren shot me a flustered, irritated glare. "I've been worried about you for days, so I've been trailing you home every day to make sure you're safe. Happy now?"My eyes went wide, and I stared at her blankly. "Maren, why are you so good to me?"She pressed her lips together and looked at me, her voice quiet. "If I hadn't left back then, you wouldn't have ended up with her… and gone through so much."She added the last part without any warning, just when I thought she'd stopped. I froze, my thoughts suddenly all over the place, and looked her in the eye."I've never once thought that, I swear. Back whe

  • Married to a Star, Hunted Like a Villain   Chapter 8

Third-Person's POVIt was late at night by the time Delia got home. She'd had a lot to drink, and when she squinted and unlocked the door, the house was dark and cold. At this hour, Jensen would already be in bed since he always went to sleep early. It suddenly occurred to Delia that whenever she used to come home from work dinners, no matter how late it was, Callum would always have soup warming on the stove to settle her stomach. If he couldn't stay awake any longer and had to go to bed, he'd still leave a small lamp on in the entryway, like a sentry waiting for her to come home. Now there wasn't any soup, let alone a light.Groggy, Delia made her way to the bedroom door without noticing the warm yellow light seeping through the crack. It wasn't until she heard the sounds coming from inside that she snapped awake. A man was breathing heavily, and a woman was moaning."If you hadn't helped me bribe that fan of Callum's to lie and testify against him, this whole plan wouldn't have

Callum's POVAfter I was discharged, Maren brought me back to her house. I wanted to turn her down, but she said she was always away filming, and the place sat empty most of the time, so I might as well stay there. Her housekeeper, Mrs. Pruitt, was a lovely woman who was always fussing that I was too thin and kept cooking me something new and delicious every day.I took out every cent of my savings, hoping to open a coffee shop. Maren threw her full support behind the idea. She helped me scout locations, look into brands, and even put up more money for it.I was grateful, but she only said, "Think of it as making up for all the years I couldn't help you."I really didn't see much of Maren during that time. She was busy every day, and sometimes, she'd come home, sit for a little while, and then rush off again.Mrs. Pruitt once asked me privately what was going on between Maren and me. I hesitated for a moment, then gave a wry smile and said we were just friends. If I were being h

Third-Person's POVOutside Rosalind's hospital room, Maren had run into Delia's bodyguards. When she pressed them, they admitted that Delia had taken Callum to the underground fight club, and Maren had gone straight after them. Now she looked at the man lying unconscious in the hospital bed and thought back to everything she'd seen when she got to the club. Down by her side, where Callum couldn't see, her hand curled slightly and wouldn't stop trembling. If she'd been even a moment later, things would've spiraled completely out of control.By the time Maren arrived, a tiger already had Callum pinned beneath it, its jaws aimed right at his throat. She pulled out her gun and fired without hesitation, and all five bullets hit their mark. Once the tigers were dead, the bodyguards she'd brought went in to get him out.Maren rushed Callum to the hospital. The doctor said he had no life-threatening injuries, just some surface wounds, and that he'd be fine with some rest. Only then did sh

  • Married to a Star, Hunted Like a Villain   Chapter 5

Callum's POVI had a long, long dream. In it, I was back to when Delia and I first met. I was playing a footman, and she was playing a lady's maid. In corners the cameras couldn't catch, she'd stick out her pinky in a prim little pose and make faces at me.It was scorching hot, and during breaks, the big-name actors had their own trailers parked in the best shady spots, while the rest of us could only huddle in a corner fanning ourselves. Delia always seemed to show up behind me holding an ice cream bar.I stared at her in surprise. "I thought extras didn't get ice cream?"She casually sat down on the step above me, blocking the sun and giving me a patch of shade. "I found a way."She said it like it was nothing, but I knew how hard it was to get that ice cream bar. The production coordinator played favorites, so if he'd handed Delia one, who knew how many snide remarks she'd have to put up with for it?A warmth spread through my chest, and I tilted my head up to look at her.
