Chapter 4

Author: Deepwood
Callum's POV

I stared at her, stunned, with no idea what she was talking about.

Delia dragged me to the hospital, where Jensen lay in bed, pale, covered in injuries, and looking terribly weak. Her eyes reddened with heartache. She dropped my hand, rushed to his side, and took his, soothing him gently.

"It's okay now, Jensen. I had my people throw those guys into the ocean. Nobody's going to dare mess with you again."

The moment Jensen saw me, he stared like he'd seen a monster. He started shaking all over, then dropped to his knees at my feet with tears streaming down his face.

"Callum, please, don't let those people hurt me anymore. I'll quit the industry, and I'll never show my face around Dee again…"

His face was so swollen he barely looked human, bruises covered his whole body, and one of his arms was broken.

I frowned hard at him. "What are you talking about? I have no idea what you mean."

Out of nowhere, Delia slapped me so hard I staggered, and my head started ringing. She glared at me with a hatred so fierce it looked like it could tear me apart.

"You couldn't stand Jensen, so you tried to have him beaten to death? What kind of man does that? Callum, I was so wrong about you. Someone as twisted as you never deserved my love. I regret ever marrying you."

Those words stabbed straight into my heart.

"I didn't—"

She didn't believe me for a second. With a cold laugh, she called over her bodyguards, who forced me into a car and drove me to the underground fight club.

Delia sneered. "There aren't just fighters here. There are wild animals too, and you get to take your pick. Whatever Jensen went through, you're going to suffer a thousand times over!"

The place reeked of something nauseating. Dozens of hulking men watched me like predators, and roars echoed out of the darkness. Despair crept over me, and for the first time ever, I backed down in front of Delia.

"I won't remarry you. I'm out. You and Jensen can have each other. Just let me leave."

Delia's face stayed cold even as she gently took my hand, and what she said next turned my blood to ice.

"Do you know why you got drugged back then? Jensen told me to test you. He said if you really loved me, you'd be able to fight your instincts even while drugged and wouldn't do anything like that with someone else. But you failed. You let me down first."

My body still throbbed from being dragged around, but it was nothing compared to the feeling of my heart being ripped apart.

My eyes went red, and I broke down, screaming at her, "You ruined my career and my whole life over some stupid test!"

After the video blew up, I was charged with rape and spent a year in prison before being released for insufficient evidence. It changed everything.

I couldn't find a decent job, so I had to live under the radar and let her call all the shots. But the woman standing in front of me, the one I'd loved for so many years, was the one behind all of it.

The next second, a bodyguard rushed in. "Ms. Sutcliffe, we've got a problem! Mr. Pike got really worked up, and he just jumped from the second floor!"

Delia went pale with shock and ran out without looking back. At the door, she stopped short and spoke coldly, "Stay right here and get a real taste of everything Jensen went through!"

I was thrown into an arena, and the crowd in the stands erupted into excited shouts. A cage swung open, and a tiger lunged at me with a roar. I struggled to dodge it, but my body was soon covered in bloody gashes. Its claws tore through my flesh, and the bone-deep pain made my vision go dark in waves.

No matter what, I couldn't go down here. Gritting my teeth, I finally knocked the tiger down with one punch.

Then, a voice rang out, "Mr. Pike said this guy has to get eaten by the tigers! Bring out a few more, and let's see how long he lasts!"

Five more tigers with blood-red eyes slowly emerged from the darkness. I backed into a corner as despair sank in. Was there really no escape this time?

At a shouted command, the five tigers bared their fangs and launched themselves at me. Agony tore through my body, and a second before I lost consciousness, I heard a rapid burst of gunfire.

...

After calming Jensen down, Delia felt strangely restless. She kept thinking about the resentful look in my eyes before she left, and in the end, she decided to go back for me. All she'd wanted was to teach me a lesson so I'd stop causing trouble.

But when she got there, the scene in front of her broke her completely.

Callum's POVAt first, I didn't want anyone to know Maren and I were together. She was an A-list star now, several times more famous than Delia. Marrying me had already hurt Delia's image back then, let alone what it could do to Maren now.Maren never cared, though. Whenever she had time off at home, she'd drag me out to the mall and the movies, and we went on dates just like any ordinary couple. When fans recognized her, she'd greet them with a big smile and squeeze my hand tighter."Let me introduce you. This is my boyfriend."Even when we went out for evening walks and noticed paparazzi following us, she never made me hide. Instead, she'd hold me even tighter and plant a soft kiss on my cheek. The reaction online quickly went from shock to nothing but congratulations."Last time Maren went live, she said she was going after the boy who used to live next door. So it's Mr. Ward! Congrats on finally finding your happiness, Maren!""Honestly, ever since Mr. Ward started dating Ma

  • Married to a Star, Hunted Like a Villain   Chapter 9

Callum's POVI followed Maren back home and thanked her, though I couldn't help feeling a little puzzled. "How did you just show up out of nowhere like that?"She paused for a beat, then answered like it was nothing, "I was just passing by."I laughed despite myself. "That place is way out in the suburbs, and there isn't even a grocery store nearby. How were you just passing by?"Maren shot me a flustered, irritated glare. "I've been worried about you for days, so I've been trailing you home every day to make sure you're safe. Happy now?"My eyes went wide, and I stared at her blankly. "Maren, why are you so good to me?"She pressed her lips together and looked at me, her voice quiet. "If I hadn't left back then, you wouldn't have ended up with her… and gone through so much."She added the last part without any warning, just when I thought she'd stopped. I froze, my thoughts suddenly all over the place, and looked her in the eye."I've never once thought that, I swear. Back whe

  • Married to a Star, Hunted Like a Villain   Chapter 8

Third-Person's POVIt was late at night by the time Delia got home. She'd had a lot to drink, and when she squinted and unlocked the door, the house was dark and cold. At this hour, Jensen would already be in bed since he always went to sleep early. It suddenly occurred to Delia that whenever she used to come home from work dinners, no matter how late it was, Callum would always have soup warming on the stove to settle her stomach. If he couldn't stay awake any longer and had to go to bed, he'd still leave a small lamp on in the entryway, like a sentry waiting for her to come home. Now there wasn't any soup, let alone a light.Groggy, Delia made her way to the bedroom door without noticing the warm yellow light seeping through the crack. It wasn't until she heard the sounds coming from inside that she snapped awake. A man was breathing heavily, and a woman was moaning."If you hadn't helped me bribe that fan of Callum's to lie and testify against him, this whole plan wouldn't have

Callum's POVAfter I was discharged, Maren brought me back to her house. I wanted to turn her down, but she said she was always away filming, and the place sat empty most of the time, so I might as well stay there. Her housekeeper, Mrs. Pruitt, was a lovely woman who was always fussing that I was too thin and kept cooking me something new and delicious every day.I took out every cent of my savings, hoping to open a coffee shop. Maren threw her full support behind the idea. She helped me scout locations, look into brands, and even put up more money for it.I was grateful, but she only said, "Think of it as making up for all the years I couldn't help you."I really didn't see much of Maren during that time. She was busy every day, and sometimes, she'd come home, sit for a little while, and then rush off again.Mrs. Pruitt once asked me privately what was going on between Maren and me. I hesitated for a moment, then gave a wry smile and said we were just friends. If I were being h

  • Married to a Star, Hunted Like a Villain   Chapter 6

Third-Person's POVOutside Rosalind's hospital room, Maren had run into Delia's bodyguards. When she pressed them, they admitted that Delia had taken Callum to the underground fight club, and Maren had gone straight after them. Now she looked at the man lying unconscious in the hospital bed and thought back to everything she'd seen when she got to the club. Down by her side, where Callum couldn't see, her hand curled slightly and wouldn't stop trembling. If she'd been even a moment later, things would've spiraled completely out of control.By the time Maren arrived, a tiger already had Callum pinned beneath it, its jaws aimed right at his throat. She pulled out her gun and fired without hesitation, and all five bullets hit their mark. Once the tigers were dead, the bodyguards she'd brought went in to get him out.Maren rushed Callum to the hospital. The doctor said he had no life-threatening injuries, just some surface wounds, and that he'd be fine with some rest. Only then did sh

  • Married to a Star, Hunted Like a Villain   Chapter 5

Callum's POVI had a long, long dream. In it, I was back to when Delia and I first met. I was playing a footman, and she was playing a lady's maid. In corners the cameras couldn't catch, she'd stick out her pinky in a prim little pose and make faces at me.It was scorching hot, and during breaks, the big-name actors had their own trailers parked in the best shady spots, while the rest of us could only huddle in a corner fanning ourselves. Delia always seemed to show up behind me holding an ice cream bar.I stared at her in surprise. "I thought extras didn't get ice cream?"She casually sat down on the step above me, blocking the sun and giving me a patch of shade. "I found a way."She said it like it was nothing, but I knew how hard it was to get that ice cream bar. The production coordinator played favorites, so if he'd handed Delia one, who knew how many snide remarks she'd have to put up with for it?A warmth spread through my chest, and I tilted my head up to look at her.
