ELENA POV

Emily didn't disappear after that dinner the way I'd hoped she would. She started appearing at the estate more often than seemed necessary, always with some excuse: a charity gala Damien's family was expected to support, a business matter her father wanted discussed in person, a favor she needed that somehow always required Damien's direct attention rather than anyone else's. I tried not to let it bother me. I mostly failed.

"She's here again," I said one evening, watching from the li

ELENA POVSophia answered on the first ring, her voice low and rushed, like she was speaking from somewhere she didn't want to be overheard. "Elena, thank God. I didn't know if you'd actually call back.""What's going on? Your text scared me.""Marcus has been meeting with Carlo again. Secretly, late at night, coming home smelling like whiskey and talking in his sleep about things that don't make sense unless you already know what he's involved in." Her voice cracked slightly. "I found a recording app on his phone last week. He's been documenting everything, Elena, conversations with Carlo, plans, dates. I think he's been building some kind of insurance policy for himself, in case this all falls apart.""Insurance against what?""Against Carlo, I think. Or against you. I honestly don't know anymore." She let out a shaky breath. "He mentioned your name last night. Said something about how getting you alone would finally force Damien's hand, whatever that means. I think they're plan

  • Married to my Fiancé Uncle   Chapter Thirty Seven

ELENA POVDamien's grandmother met us at the front doors before we'd even fully climbed out of the car, and whatever composure she usually kept so carefully in place cracked entirely the moment she saw him. She crossed the distance faster than I'd ever seen her move, pulling him into an embrace that lasted long enough that I understood, watching them, exactly how much fear she'd been carrying underneath her usual sharp exterior for the past three months."You foolish, reckless boy," she said into his shoulder, her voice thick with something she rarely allowed herself to show. "Do you have any idea what you put us through?""I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I didn't see another way.""There's always another way." She pulled back, studying his face with the same sharp assessment she'd given me the day I first arrived, though this time it carried nothing but relief underneath it. But I understand why you chose this one. I would have made the same choice, once, before fear taught me bette

  • Married to my Fiancé Uncle   Chapter Thirty Six

ELENA POVHe came back on an ordinary Tuesday, which somehow felt wrong given everything the last three months had cost both of us. I was in my office at the company, buried in quarterly reports, when my assistant knocked and told me a man was waiting in the lobby who refused to give his name but insisted I would want to see him.I almost didn't go down. Some tired, cautious part of me assumed it was Carlo again, or one of his men sent to deliver another veiled threat dressed up as politeness. I went anyway, because staying upstairs and wondering felt worse than whatever waited below. He was standing near the window when I stepped off the elevator, a scar cutting through one eyebrow that hadn't been there before, his hair longer, his frame leaner in a way that told me the last three months had cost him more than he'd probably admit out loud. He turned when he heard my footsteps, and for a long moment neither of us moved, the entire lobby fading into something distant and unimportant

  • Married to my Fiancé Uncle   Chapter Thirty Five

ELENA POVMarco Reyes called two days after the anonymous text arrived, his voice tighter than I remembered from our last conversation outside the fashion warehouse. "We need to talk," he said. "Somewhere private. Not your office, not the estate."We met at a small diner near the edge of the city, the kind of place with sticky vinyl booths and coffee that had clearly been sitting on the burner too long, chosen, I assumed, precisely because nobody from either of our worlds would think to look for us there."You look tired," he said, sliding into the booth across from me."It's been a difficult few months.""I imagine so." He wrapped both hands around his coffee cup without drinking from it, studying me with the same careful attention he'd shown since high school, back when he used to know exactly when I hadn't finished an assignment. "I heard about your husband. I'm sorry, genuinely, whatever complicated feelings I have about the family he belonged to."Something in his tone made me

  • Married to my Fiancé Uncle   Chapter Thirty four

ELENA POVTwo months into Damien's absence, Carlo requested a meeting with me directly, a formal letter delivered by courier instead of the casual visits he usually paid the estate, and something about the careful, deliberate wording made my skin crawl in a way his earlier veiled threats never quite managed.I brought two of Damien's most trusted men with me to the restaurant he'd chosen downtown, a quiet, expensive place with private booths and staff who clearly understood the value of discretion. Carlo was already seated when I arrived, a glass of wine untouched in front of him, his expression pleasant in a way that had learned, over decades, to hide exactly how dangerous the man underneath it truly was."Elena. Thank you for coming." He gestured toward the seat across from him, and I sat, keeping my hands folded carefully in my lap where he couldn't see them shake. "I hope the last few months haven't been too difficult for you, given everything.""You mean given that your ambush

  • Married to my Fiancé Uncle   Chapter Thirty Three

ELENA POVThe results came back on a gray Tuesday morning, delivered quietly through a private lab Priya had recommended, one that specialized in discretion for clients who couldn't afford their business splashed across any public record. I read the report twice before I fully believed it, though it confirmed exactly what Marcus had already told me weeks earlier. The baby was his. Ninety-nine point nine percent probability, printed in careful, clinical language that somehow made the whole situation feel both more real and more absurd at the same time.I called a family meeting for the following week, one of the strange, formal gatherings the Rossi family still insisted on holding even with their most powerful member supposedly dead, everyone gathering in the same dining room where Emily had first announced her pregnancy months earlier. I'd insisted the Morettis attend as well, citing unfinished business that needed resolving before the family could properly move forward.Emily arriv
