Elle’s POV

If pain had a sound, it would be the quiet hum of the AC in Raymond’s office and the dull thump of his fingers against the mahogany desk.

We were both sitting in silence.

There was no music, no news playing in the background, just the sound of the city moving on outside—while our world inside the office slowed to a crawl.

I hated this.

I hated seeing him like this. I hated it so much.

Raymond’s elbows were on the armrest of his chair now, his thumb and forefinger pressed to his temple, eyes closed like he was holding the entire world from falling apart.

We had just lost two major shareholders. Titan & Co had pulled out, and the second—Avon Financial Group—had already submitted their official withdrawal paperwork.

Just like that, millions evaporated from the company’s valuation, and the boardroom had turned ice cold.

But worse than the numbers, worse than the looks people gave him in the hallway, was the betrayal.

Someone had started this. Someone who knew what t

Elle's POV That night, when the lights dimmed, Raymond pulled me against him in bed. His arm wrapped tightly around my waist, his hand resting over my stomach as though he could guard both of us even in his sleep. His breathing slowed, steady and calm, but mine never matched. The ceiling stared back at me, blank and unforgiving. The longer the silence stretched, the louder the ghosts stirred. My father’s face emerged from the dark corners of my memory, his sneer sharp as a blade. How many years had I prayed to escape him? And yet, here I was—still beneath a roof with him, still trapped in his shadow. When Raymond was home, it felt easier. My father’s words, his threats, his presence—they all faded into background noise when Raymond’s arms were around me. But if he left? My chest tightened, my hand clutching the sheets until my knuckles ached. Maybe Evans would ignore me. Maybe he would keep his distance. Maybe—it felt like I was just making wishes. Because I knew better.

Elle's POVFor a second, he froze. The world seemed to pause around us—the clinking of glasses, the piano notes, and even the air itself. His eyes locked on mine, wide and searching.“Elle… is this true?” He asked, his voice hoarse, almost breaking.I felt my throat tighten as I nodded, a smile trembling on my lips.“Yes. It’s true. We’re going to have a baby.”For a moment, he just stood there, stunned. And then—everything changed.Raymond pushed his chair back so suddenly that it scraped against the floor. He shot up to his feet, his voice booming through the restaurant.“I’M GOING TO BE A FATHER!”Every head turned our way. A few diners gasped, others chuckled, and some even applauded. Raymond didn’t care—he was grinning like a man who had just been given the world.I reached for his sleeve, tugging playfully. “Raymond, sit down, you’re embarrassing us—”“Embarrassing?” He laughed, his joy spilling everywhere. “This is the best damn news of my life!” He turned to the nearest waiter

ELLE’S POV “…if we can finalize the upgrade by next quarter, we’ll have leverage to negotiate new partnerships,” One of the younger engineers was saying, gesturing toward the glowing slide behind him. I tried to focus, but his words blurred into meaningless shapes. The numbers on the screen swam, my temples pounding harder with every second. A wave of dizziness rippled through me, forcing me to grip the edge of the table until my knuckles whitened. I couldn’t take it anymore. “Alright,” I said abruptly, cutting him off mid-sentence. “That’s enough for today. Please send me your reports by the end of the day.” The room fell into an awkward silence before the shuffle of movement began. Laptops snapped shut, chairs scraped against the floor, and soon the conference room emptied—everyone filing out without a second glance. Everyone except Jessica. She lingered, watching me closely. When the door finally shut behind the last analyst, she crossed the room, her brows knitted w

Raymond's POV Clyde stepped into my office without knocking, a familiar file tucked under his arm. “The numbers are steadying,” He said, his voice even. “Calls have slowed, stocks are crawling back up. The board’s less tense too. Feels like the storm’s finally easing.”He laid the file on my desk, straightened, and gave me a small nod. “Thought you would want to know.”“Thanks,” I muttered, barely looking up from the papers in front of me.He hovered a second, then turned toward the door. “Alright, I’ll leave you be—”“Wait,” I called out.The word slipped out before I thought twice.Clyde turned back, raising a brow. “Something else?”I leaned back in my chair, dragging a hand down my face. “Tell me something, Clyde. Do you ever… make a decision you know is right—every fact, every angle pointing that way—but still feel like you’ve lost something in the process?”Clyde’s brow furrowed. “You mean Nita.”I nodded once, jaw tight.“I thought locking her up was the right thing,” I sai

ELLE'S POV My stomach turned cold, a knot tightening in my chest. “The hospital?” My voice came out barely above a whisper. “Why—what happened to her?”The officer’s expression tightened. He glanced once at Raymond before answering.“We went to execute the warrant this morning. The usual standard procedure. We knocked, announced ourselves, and identified who we were. She saw us, panicked… and pulled out a gun.”I felt my knees weaken. “A gun?”He nodded grimly. “She fired at us. Two shots. Hit the wall. We had no choice but to return fire. One of our men’s bullets connected. We subdued her immediately, called in medics, and rushed her to the hospital.”My heart hammered so hard I thought I might faint. My hand instinctively reached for the edge of the counter to steady myself.“She’s… she’s alive?” I forced out the question, my voice trembling. The officer hesitated, and I hated the way his silence stretched for even a second too long.“She’s alive,” he said finally. “But her condit

ELLE'S POVThe boardroom was barely empty when I turned on Raymond. My heart was pounding so fast I could hear it in my ears, but I didn’t care.“You broke our agreement,” I said, my voice sharp enough to cut through the heavy silence left behind. He stopped halfway through slipping his arm into his jacket sleeve, his brow furrowing as he looked at me. “What agreement?” He asked, curiosity lacing his words.I stared at him, disbelief rising like bile in my throat. “Don’t play dumb with me, Raymond. The one we made with Nita. We promised her we wouldn’t expose her if she came clean.”He blinked, genuine confusion flickering across his face. “Elle, I don’t remember—”“You don’t remember?” My voice cracked, rising higher than I meant it to as I cut him off. I took a step closer, my hands clenching into fists. “I answered your phone earlier today, and guess what, it was the police. They said you had filed the complaint and Nita yourself, and that they needed your signature to move forwa
