I quietly and quickly picked up my clothes scattered on the ground of the hotel room. I felt dirty and ashamed of myself. But I knew that the deed had already been done and there was no going back. “It's for Richard's sake,” I kept chanting in my head to rid myself of the guilt that I just cheated for the first time in my seven years of marriage. After getting dressed, I glanced once more at the sleeping man on the ruffled bed before stepping out of the hotel room. He was the new manager that joined the company a few months ago, a handsome bachelor who I had to lead on so I could get my hands on the promotion that my husband needed so badly. Speaking of my husband, Richard must be waiting for me to give him the good news; that I had successfully done what he asked. I arrived home tired and walked straight to the bedroom assuming that Richard was in there since I couldn't find him anywhere else in the house. I stepped into the room and color drained from my face when I saw him snuggling with another woman on our matrimonial bed. Their clothes were scattered around the room and the air reeked of sex that they obviously just had. Still in shock at the scene before me, I staggered weakly and called out distraught “Richard, what is this?” tears began to well up in my eyes as I thought of my dignity that I had sacrificed for him. Upon hearing my voice, the cuddling pair shook in surprise to see me but they remained on the bed. “Can’t you knock before entering?” Richard hissed at me. I shuddered, shocked to see him look at me with so much irritation. I was also angry that I had put my dignity on the line for him and I returned to see this. I walked closer to them and handed him the document, perhaps he would understand what I had done for him when he saw it. He eyed the file and took it before chuckling, “So you really did it?” he asked a question that I didn't know how to answer. “I don't understand. You told me to get the contract with any means necessary even if it was sleeping with your manager. I did it for you” I tried to keep my voice clear but I couldn't help but quiver from sadness and anger. He chuckled again and hissed, “This wretch! So you cheat on me and expect me to be happy about it? I never told you to sleep with my manager, you made that decision yourself because you are a slut and a cheat. You did nothing for me, I never put a gun to your head to help me” he spat out. Every word he said pierced me like a knife, I couldn't believe he was the one saying all this after pushing me to do it. He was the one who told me to keep the fact that we were married couples a secret from the office, we always acted like strangers at work and working in different departments made it easier. When his manager took an interest in me, he encouraged me to keep it up till I could get him to sign his promotion. I never wanted to do it but he kept on pushing, begging and threatening. Why was he pretending to not know anything about it now? He even threatened to end our marriage if I didn't… so I did it all for him. I made his manager book a hotel and got him very drunk then I had sex with him so he could approve the promotion document. How can he say such a thing now? I eyed the woman lying nonchalantly beside him and then I remembered seeing her before. Oh yes! She was the chief operating officer directly under the CEO, Melody, people respected her due to her high position in the company. Compared to her, a mere department manager was nothing. I could finally understand why Richard went for her, she could easily give him a promotion and other benefits. “You are accusing me of being a cheat but what does that make you? I came in here to see you in bed with another woman, you know I never would have slept with the manager if you didn't threaten to end our marriage” I retorted back, out of frustration and anger. Richard sighed tiredly and handed me another set of papers along with the one I had given him, “I am not like you because our marriage already ended a while ago in my eyes. You think I didn't notice you staying up at night to flirt with the manager, you became distant and never cared whether I was alive or not. I know I don't measure up to him but I thought our seven years of marriage would mean somethin⁵g to you. It was during my distraught state that I met this goddess and she has been my strength ever since to put up with you. Now you suddenly returned with a promotion document as if I ever asked you to do that for me. I am tired of your games, Elle. Take this and sign quickly, this marriage is over” he poured out. I couldn't help but burst into laughter as soon as I read the title of the document as divorce papers. Oh how pathetic I looked, I had spent the entire night struggling to get his contract signed and he already found a quicker option. Now he wanted nothing to do with me, I could never give him half of the benefits the COO offered. All the lies he just spewed was to act like a saint in her presence while I took the fall for it. I could certainly be given the wife of the decade award for cheating for my husband and still getting divorced. My seven years of marriage was one big joke; my husband was leaving for power despite all we had been through together. I took the documents with shaky hands as I pushed back the urge to bawl my eyes out. I didn't want them to see me heartbroken and weak, I had lost enough dignity today. “And one more thing, Melody doesn't like you here so turn in those papers and pack your things, I want you out of my house within the hour” I heard him say behind me as I walked out of the room. I could hear their giggles all the way from the living room while I packed my belongings and left my matrimonial home with a heavy heart.Elle’s POVSoft morning light filtered through the cracks in the curtains. I stirred slowly, the warm weight of an arm curled around my waist. A small smile tugged at the corners of my lips as I shifted slightly and looked up at Raymond. He was already awake. His blue eyes met mine with a tenderness that never failed to melt me.“Morning, Princess,” he whispered, brushing a loose strand of hair from my face.“Morning,” I replied, my voice still husky from sleep. “You’ve been watching me?”“Guilty,” he murmured, leaning in to kiss my forehead. “You look too peaceful to disturb.”We stayed like that for a while, just wrapped in each other’s arms. It was moments like these that made me feel like the world outside didn’t exist, just us.But it did, and eventually, duty called. We took our time getting dressed, teasing, and sharing kisses in between buttons and ties. Raymond helped zip up my dress, his fingers lingering—brushing against my skin—and I had to gently push him away with a l
Richard’s POV"Oh, Richard! Don't! Don't stop!""I definitely won't," I growled as I drilled into Melody. She was something else.I was about to release inside of her when someone banged on the door.I jerked up, beads of sweat rolling down my body."Shit!" I swore. It was all just a dream. The banging came again, harder and louder this time.I dragged myself out of bed, my head pounding from the cheap whiskey I’d drowned myself in the night before. I barely had time to throw on a shirt when I heard the door fly open. Just as I was about to open the room door to see who had invaded my privacy, the landlord did the same—with two police officers standing behind him.“Mr. Lawson, you’ve missed rent for three weeks. This is your final notice,” he said coldly, tossing a folded letter onto the floor.I blinked, still half-asleep as I wiped my eyes. “Wait—what? I just need a few more days. I’ve got something coming through and—”“Something coming through?” he scoffed, cutting me off. “You
Elle’s POVI grabbed my phone and started listing things to pick up after work: his favorite wine, imported from Italy, and other ingredients needed to make something special for him. He liked aged cheddar with dark grapes. His favorite food was steak with rosemary and garlic. And for dessert, he always chose the chocolate cake from a small bakery that reminded him of his childhood.I paused, my fingers hovering above the screen as I thought of the words, "his childhood." That was one of the few things he never talked about.I shook the thought away.Tonight wasn’t for questions. Tonight was for us.Even if part of me still feared that the name "Nuelle" had opened a door that could never be closed again… I would leave that mystery for another time. For once in my life, I wanted to enjoy what I had—before it slipped through my fingers.***I had gotten home a few hours ago to get everything set. I had also given the employees in the house a night off. I didn't want anything or anyone
CHAPTER EIGHTElle’s POVBy the time Raymond returned home, I was curled up on the couch, phone in hand, pretending to scroll. The door opened, and his tall frame filled the entryway. He smiled when he saw me, loosening his tie.“You look like you’ve had a long day,” he said, walking over and dropping a kiss on my forehead.“Mm. You could say that,” I muttered, trying to sound unconcerned. He ran his fingers through my hair. “You sure you’re okay?”“I’m fine.” I said, my lips curving into a smile. But it was the usual. He studied me for a few seconds, then sighed and walked upstairs, loosening his cufflinks as he went.I watched him disappear up the staircase. I wanted to follow him and be with him, but I couldn't bring myself to. Not when I wasn't sure of what he was hiding.***I stepped into the office, not expecting anything. Raymond and I had had an awkward morning, and it was all my fault. My thoughts were still tangled with so many unanswered questions. But the moment I wal
Raymond's POV I was sitting in the chair at the head of the huge mahogany table, hoping for the meeting to end as soon as possible. Mara was halfway through her pitch on Project Synergy. Her voice kept resounding in my ears, backed by a slideshow of graphs that looked like every other graph I’d seen in the last decade. “…which means our market entry window is narrow but optimal,” she said, a laser pointer circling a bar chart. I leaned back in my chair as I found myself watching a single bird glide past the window—lucky bastard. It wasn't like I hated board meetings, just that I wasn't in the mood for this one. Not when she was on my mind. I kept thinking about what happened in the morning. I still couldn't believe I had called her Nuelle. That was stupid of me. I had suggested breakfast to help clear her mind and try to make her let it go. The truth was, I wasn't ready for her to find out who I was. And I never might be. “Mr. Jefferson?” Mara’s voice cut through my thought
Elle's POV Raymond and I were halfway through dressing when he spoke up casually, brushing lint off my sleeve. "How about we get breakfast before work today?" he asked. I raised a brow at him. "Were we supposed to leave without having breakfast?" He let out a chuckle. "No, I don't mean breakfast as usual. I meant for us to go outside and have something to eat. Like a date." I blinked at him, unsure if I heard him right. "Breakfast? Outside?" "Yeah. There's a little place I used to go to. Been thinking about it all week," he said, his lips tipping into that devilishly charming smile. I glanced at the wall clock in the room. "Raymond, I have to get to the office early today. I have a report due and—" He pulled me closer by the waist, eyes twinkling as he locked them with mine. "You’re married to the CEO, Princess. Do I have to keep reminding you? Besides, I promise, no one will care if you're late." I sighed. “They’ll talk. You know they have already been talking.” He grabbe
