LOGIN“No one hurts you and goes scot free. Richard, your ex husband, is going to pay dearly for what he put you through, his only saving grace is that his actions brought you to me. From now on, you are going to be with me and in case you haven't noticed, I am madly in love with you, Elle. Richard is your past now and I am your future. So what do you say, will you give me a chance to be your husband?” Was I crazy to accept his proposal when I just signed divorce papers yesterday? Maybe I was or maybe his eyes were just too intoxicating to say no to. * Elle Decker was a dedicated wife who would do anything for her husband, Richard, even if it meant sleeping with his manager to get his signature on her husband's promotion document. I quietly and quickly picked up my clothes scattered on the ground of the hotel room. I felt dirty and ashamed of myself. But I knew that the deed had already been done and there was no going back. “It's for Richard's sake,” I kept chanting in my head to rid myself of the guilt that I just cheated for the first time in my seven years of marriage. After getting dressed, I glanced once more at the sleeping man on the ruffled bed before stepping out of the hotel room. He was the new manager that joined the company a few months ago, a handsome bachelor who I had to lead on so I could get my hands on the promotion that my husband needed so badly. Speaking of my husband, Richard must be waiting for me to give him the good news; that I had successfully done what he asked. I arrived home tired and walked straight to the bedroom assuming that Richard was in there since I couldn't find him anywhere else in the house. I stepped into the room and color drained from my face when I saw him snuggling with another woman on our matrimonial bed. Their clothes were scattered around the room and the air reeked of sex that they obviously just had. Still in shock at the scene before me, I staggered weakly and called out distraught “Richard, what is this?” tears began to well up in my eyes as I thought of my dignity that I had sacrificed for him. Upon hearing my voice, the cuddling pair shook in surprise to see me but they remained on the bed. “Can’t you knock before entering?” Richard hissed at me. I shuddered, shocked to see him look at me with so much irritation. I was also angry that I had put my dignity on the line for him and I returned to see this. I walked closer to them and handed him the document, perhaps he would understand what I had done for him when he saw it. He eyed the file and took it before chuckling, “So you really did it?” he asked a question that I didn't know how to answer. “I don't understand. You told me to get the contract with any means necessary even if it was sleeping with your manager. I did it for you” I tried to keep my voice clear but I couldn't help but quiver from sadness and anger. He chuckled again and hissed, “This wretch! So you cheat on me and expect me to be happy about it? I never told you to sleep with my manager, you made that decision yourself because you are a slut and a cheat. You did nothing for me, I never put a gun to your head to help me” he spat out. Every word he said pierced me like a knife, I couldn't believe he was the one saying all this after pushing me to do it. He was the one who told me to keep the fact that we were married couples a secret from the office, we always acted like strangers at work and working in different departments made it easier. When his manager took an interest in me, he encouraged me to keep it up till I could get him to sign his promotion. I never wanted to do it but he kept on pushing, begging and threatening. Why was he pretending to not know anything about it now? He even threatened to end our marriage if I didn't… so I did it all for him. I made his manager book a hotel and got him very drunk then I had sex with him so he could approve the promotion document. How can he say such a thing now? I eyed the woman lying nonchalantly beside him and then I remembered seeing her before. Oh yes! She was the chief operating officer directly under the CEO, Melody, people respected her due to her high position in the company. Compared to her, a mere department manager was nothing. I could finally understand why Richard went for her, she could easily give him a promotion and other benefits. “You are accusing me of being a cheat but what does that make you? I came in here to see you in bed with another woman, you know I never would have slept with the manager if you didn't threaten to end our marriage” I retorted back, out of frustration and anger. Richard sighed tiredly and handed me another set of papers along with the one I had given him, “I am not like you because our marriage already ended a while ago in my eyes. You think I didn't notice you staying up at night to flirt with the manager, you became distant and never cared whether I was alive or not. I know I don't measure up to him but I thought our seven years of marriage would mean somethin⁵g to you. It was during my distraught state that I met this goddess and she has been my strength ever since to put up with you. Now you suddenly returned with a promotion document as if I ever asked you to do that for me. I am tired of your games, Elle. Take this and sign quickly, this marriage is over” he poured out. I couldn't help but burst into laughter as soon as I read the title of the document as divorce papers. Oh how pathetic I looked, I had spent the entire night struggling to get his contract signed and he already found a quicker option. Now he wanted nothing to do with me, I could never give him half of the benefits the COO offered. All the lies he just spewed was to act like a saint in her presence while I took the fall for it. I could certainly be given the wife of the decade award for cheating for my husband and still getting divorced. My seven years of marriage was one big joke; my husband was leaving for power despite all we had been through together. I took the documents with shaky hands as I pushed back the urge to bawl my eyes out. I didn't want them to see me heartbroken and weak, I had lost enough dignity today. “And one more thing, Melody doesn't like you here so turn in those papers and pack your things, I want you out of my house within the hour” I heard him say behind me as I walked out of the room. I could hear their giggles all the way from the living room while I packed my belongings and left my matrimonial home with a heavy heart.ELLEThe first thing I noticed when I woke up was the quiet.I rolled over, stretching my arm across the sheets, but the space beside me was cold. Raymond hadn’t been in bed for a while. My chest tightened just slightly. He never left without saying something—not unless something was weighing heavily on him.But these days it had been different. I pushed the covers aside and sat up, brushing a strand of hair away from my face. Maybe he was in the bathroom. I padded across the carpet and cracked the door open, half-expecting the sound of running water. But the bathroom was empty. The mirror was spotless, no fog, no steam clinging to the glass.“He didn’t even shower in here…” I whispered to myself.A knot formed in my stomach, but I shook it off and turned the faucet on. I took off my clothes. The water warmed quickly, spilling over my skin. I leaned against the wall of the shower, letting it wash the sleep away.Memories tugged at me, uninvited but vivid.Another morning, months ag
RAYMONDRichard blinked, confusion cutting through his arrogance.“Yes,” Elle continued, her tone sharpening, “a toothpick I used to pull out the real rot stuck in my teeth. And when I was done, I didn’t just throw you away. I broke you. Shattered you into something smaller than you already were. And I’ll keep breaking you, Richard. Again and again, until your life is nothing but a miserable echo of what you want it to be.”Richard’s face twisted, rage flooding his features. He lunged forward across the table, but the cuffs yanked him short. “You ungrateful little—!”“Sit back!” one of the officers barked, forcing him into the chair again.Melody finally broke, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Elle, please! It wasn’t me. I didn’t want to do any of this. It was Richard—he forced me. I swear!”Elle didn’t even look at her. “You stood by him. You watched. You helped. That was your choice.”“Elle—” Melody sobbed, but the officer yanked her to her feet, ignoring her protests.Another offi
RaymondThe woman stopped midway down the path, then turned back. Elle didn’t even have to call her again—the woman’s feet strolled as if some thread had been tugged. When she reached us she looked like a person who had been holding her breath for a long time, lips pulled into a grim, rehearsed smile that had finally given up.Elle stepped forward, eyes boring into the woman as if she could force the truth out with pressure alone. “When we were in Mr. Hart’s office,” she said, her voice low. “Someone was eavesdropping in the corridor. I didn’t see their face. I wasn’t looking. But I remember the trousers—brown cotton, worn at the knees. Not staff, not a delivery uniform.”The woman’s hands trembled. Her eyes dropped to her legs as if seeing them for the first time—to her brown pants—then wandered up to the name tag pinned to her blouse. Michelle Hart, it read in a small, tired font. The small, ugly thing inside me that catalogues people’s tells straightened like a hunting dog. Clinto
RAYMONDTwo days was how long it took for us to get permission to visit. The media house looked deceptively calm from the outside. Glass walls glittered under the afternoon sun, headlines rotated across digital screens, and employees strolled through the lobby with cups of coffee as if nothing in the world could touch them. But Elle’s hand tightened in mine the moment we stepped through those glass doors. We had been passed around for over an hour. First the receptionist, then a junior manager, then a supervisor. Everyone wore the same polite mask, the same rehearsed lines.“I’m sorry, but that’s confidential.”“I understand your concerns, but our sources are protected.”“Perhaps you should try speaking with someone else.”By the time we were finally ushered into the editor’s office, Elle’s patience had snapped. Her arms were folded tightly across her chest, her jaw set, her knuckles white where she gripped the chair. The editor—a balding man with a round face and a voice too soft to
ELLERaymond's face changed—something like wonder softened everything. “I won’t stop,” he said, and it wasn’t bravado. It was a vow. “I can’t take back the years you lost. I can’t erase what he did. But I will protect you now. From everything. From rumors, from men like him, from the past that keeps trying to bleed into our present. I promise.”Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, a sweet, astonished ache. It was dangerous to trust words—people had used them to hurt me before—but his hands were warm and steady. The truth felt steadier when it carried weight like that.“Why didn’t your aunt tell me when I met her the first time?” I asked, my voice soft.He sighed. “She… she was trying to protect me. She thought that if you knew that I had been there, it would complicate you further. She assumed distance was better for both of us. She was wrong, and she knows that now.” He let out a breath that sounded like surrender. “But Aunt Althea also saved me. She made me leave to keep me out
ELLEThe clock had ticked past midnight when I heard the soft click of the front door. I sat up in bed, the lamplight still burning low beside me. My heart fluttered, equal parts relief and nerves, when Raymond stepped into the room. He hadn't returned since he stepped out to make the call. Aunt Althea had waited behind to see him, but he didn't return.I called him a few times and he kept saying he was busy. I had to let him be.Seeing him now made me hurt. His shoulders were tense and his eyes heavy with something I couldn’t quite read.He paused when he saw me awake. “Elle,” he murmured, his voice carrying both fatigue and apology. He came closer, running a hand over his face before sitting on the edge of the bed.“I’m sorry for leaving without telling you. There were things I needed to take care of. But that's not an excuse, and I know. I should’ve said something.”I studied him quietly for a moment, then reached for his hand. “It’s alright,” I said softly. “I understand.”His
