Se connecterThankfully, her ringing phone rescued her.
“Hello?” Vanessa answered, her heart racing.
Her best friend, the model Bianca Turner, spoke teasingly from the other end.
“Well? How was the wedding night?” Bianca asked. “Don't tell me you spent it talking.”
Bianca's voice carried across the room. Vanessa glanced toward Julian, who was leaving.
“We got married,” she said, relieved. “Nothing happened.”
“Seriously? You've been together for five years, and you haven't even touched each other…” Bianca cried. “Don't tell me you discovered on your wedding night that your husband can't get it up!”
She was so excited that her voice rose further.
Just then, Julian opened the door again. He heard Bianca's last remark.
He looked straight at Vanessa.
Vanessa tightened her grip on the phone.
“That's really bad. You need to see a doctor. If it can't be fixed, think carefully. I can't see you putting up with a sexless marriage for the rest of your life…”
Vanessa went red and ended the call.
“Why did you come back?” she asked, forcing a smile to hide her embarrassment.
“I forgot my watch.”
He retrieved his watch from the dressing room and came toward her.
Once he'd fastened it, he reached past her for something on the vanity, leaving her almost trapped against his chest.
“We can find out tonight whether everything works,” he said. “If you're that worried.”
“I didn't say anything!” Vanessa protested.
Julian smiled. “We'll talk when I get home.”
Before she could explain, he strode out.
Vanessa exhaled and called Bianca back.
“You've got it all wrong.”
“What have I got wrong? Why did you hang up? Are you angry because I said Adrian was bad in bed?” Bianca barely paused for breath.
“I married Julian,” Vanessa said. “Not Adrian.”
“What?!”
Ten minutes later, Bianca had heard everything and was still swearing about Adrian and Natalie.
“Good for you. Let Adrian regret it. Julian runs Firax Group, he's handsome, and he stays out of scandals. But are you sure about this? You two never even got along. What if he just wanted his family to stop nagging him?”
“It doesn't matter. We both got what we needed.” Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Yesterday, she'd married out of spite. Now she was thinking more clearly. She'd fulfilled her father's last wish. Whether she got divorced later didn't matter as much.
“All right, if you say so. I'm sending you a wedding present. Keep an eye out for it.”
“What present?”
Bianca didn't answer. Someone was calling her to start filming a commercial, and she hung up.

After a meeting at Firax Group, Julian returned to his desk.
Without looking up, he instructed his assistant, Daniel Reed.
“Buy me a pair of wedding rings, and prepare a share transfer agreement.”
“Yes, Mr. Ashford.”
When Daniel didn't leave, Julian raised his eyes.
“Anything else?”
“Mr. Arthur Ashford knows you're back. He called to say he expects you at the family residence for dinner tonight.”
Julian paused. “You can go. I'll deal with it.”
He called his grandfather as soon as Daniel left.
“So independent now, are you? You come back to Brookhaven without telling me, and I can't find you anywhere. Do I have to make an appointment to see you?”
“Relax, Grandpa. I got in yesterday, and I was jet-lagged. I didn't get a chance to let you know.” Julian drummed his fingers on the desk.
“Don't make excuses. I've spent three years telling you that when you came back, you'd have to settle down. Get married, have children… Don't forget.”
“Don't worry, Grandpa. I haven't forgotten.” He smiled. “I promise you'll be very pleased.”

Meanwhile, Adrian finally woke from his drunken sleep. His eyes half-open, he felt beneath his pillow for his phone.
When he saw how late it was, he sat up, suddenly wide awake.
He'd had an important meeting that morning, and Vanessa hadn't even called to remind him.
His assistant hurried into the bedroom. Seeing him awake, the man lowered his head.
“Mr. Ashford…”
“Why are you only getting here now?” Adrian demanded.
There were several missed calls from him.
“I thought you had something important to attend to, and I didn't want to disturb you,” the assistant explained.
He'd actually come to tell Adrian that Julian was back. But before he could, Adrian asked sharply, “Where's Vanessa?”
The assistant looked confused and shook his head. How was he supposed to know?
For five years, Vanessa had called to wake him before important meetings. He'd stopped setting his own reminders.
This time, she was surely trying to punish him by ignoring him over the registry office incident.
I've spoiled her too much, he thought.
Scowling, Adrian called Vanessa. The phone rang once, then disconnected automatically. He tried again with the same result.
She'd blocked him.
He tried sending a message. It wouldn't go through either.
He put the phone down. If she wanted to make up, she could contact him first.

At sunset, Vanessa sat by the window at Hawthorne House with her laptop on her knees, typing rapidly. She hadn't gone out all day, working instead on her screenplay. Two of her scripts had already been made into web series with respectable success.
Her phone rang. Seeing who was calling, she answered warmly.
“Hi, Grandpa.”
“Sweetheart, you haven't come to see me in a while. You got married yesterday, didn't you? Come and visit soon. Bring Adrian…”
Vanessa was silent for a few seconds before telling him the truth.
“I broke up with Adrian.”
Robert Bennett laughed. He was used to their arguments.
“What did he do this time? Has he been misbehaving and upset you again?”
Vanessa had expected him to say that. Still, she had to pause before answering.
“I mean it this time,” she said. After a short pause, she added, “I broke up with Adrian and married Julian.”
Outside the bedroom, Julian stopped with his hand on the door.
Edward brought Adrian to the Bennett house a few days later.Vanessa sat beside Julian in her grandfather's living room. Robert's lawyer had the papers ready. Nothing about the arrangement required another conversation about whether she was certain.Adrian tried anyway.“I panicked because I love you,” he told her. “When you said you were ending it, I did something stupid. Give me a chance to show you I'm sorry.”Vanessa looked at the unsigned agreement on the table.“That's not why we're here.”“Five years, Vanessa. You can't pretend they meant nothing. I'll tell everyone we're together. I'll put it on my accounts today.”“Don't.”He stopped, surprised.“We're here to end the engagement, not announce it.”Beside her, Julian remained silent. She could smell the cedar in his cologne, familiar now after a month of sharing a room. His presence helped her sit still without feeling she had to explain herself quickly before Adrian became angry.“Once you've signed,” she said, “there will be
Yolanda hesitated under Julian's gaze. For a second, she seemed more frightened than angry. Then she recovered. The look passed so quickly that Adrian didn't notice. Natalie was watching Julian, trying to judge how much he knew and how far he meant to take the confrontation. Arthur was there too, while Edward stood apart with the expression he wore when he was waiting for an argument to exhaust itself.Yolanda had expected the sight of Adrian's injuries to settle the matter. She had assembled every grievance around that bed: the violence, the broken loyalty, the elder son humiliating the younger. She hadn't expected Julian to speak about the woman who had needed rescuing rather than the man being treated in front of them.“Having control of Firax doesn't mean you can do whatever you like. Even if Adrian made a mistake, he's still your brother.”Adrian shifted against the pillows and winced.“Vanessa and I were engaged. We would have married eventually. I only tried to make her underst
Vanessa clung to Julian and cried into his shoulder.“His mother asked me there. She said she'd accept it. I thought…”She couldn't finish. Each time she tried to explain, the words broke apart.“I know,” Julian said. “You're home. He isn't here.”He let her hold on until the crying eased. When she finally drew back, he handed her a tissue and waited while she wiped her face.“How did you find me?”“You sent me your location. I knew where to start.”She nodded. At the hotel, she hadn't even known the number of the room. She remembered thinking that calling him was useless if she couldn't tell him where she was.But he had come.“You did well,” he said. “You told me where you were going.”She looked at him, still struggling to steady her breathing.“If something worries you, tell me. Even if you aren't certain.”There was no reproach in his voice. He wasn't asking why she had gone or why she had trusted Yolanda. He was telling her what she could do next time.It made the knot in her ch
Julian reached the restaurant to find that Vanessa had already gone.Daniel questioned the staff while the others searched. Within minutes, they established where Adrian had taken her: a hotel nearby.Julian was getting out of the car there when his phone rang.“Vanessa?”“Help me.”Her breathing was uneven. He could hear the effort it took her to speak.“I'm here. I'm at the hotel. Can you tell me the room number?”“I don't know.”She began to cry.He made himself keep his voice steady.“Listen to me. I'm coming. You're not alone.”He turned to Daniel, who was still speaking to the hotel staff.“The room,” he said.On the other end, Vanessa heard the bathroom door and hid the phone beneath a pillow without ending the call.“We are finished, Adrian,” she said. “Stay away from me.”He ignored her. He was still explaining how this would fix their relationship, how she would stop threatening to leave once she understood they belonged together.Julian heard enough to know she was in immed
Vanessa didn't ask Julian what he meant. She was afraid that asking would reveal how much she wanted the answer to be about her.“Why have you gone quiet?” he said.“Nothing. I was remembering something Adrian said. That you always accomplish whatever you set out to do.”His expression cooled.“You remember his words well.”She missed the change in his tone.“He was right about that. I do think you're extraordinary.”She looked at him with such open sincerity that Julian could only sigh.“Sometimes you're very innocent, Vanessa.”“What does that mean?”He tousled her hair instead of answering.“You've had a long day. Get some rest.”She went upstairs. Julian returned to his study and lit a cigarette. He had barely settled behind the desk when Leonardo called. The conversation stayed with him after she had gone. She could tell him she trusted him, look at him as though he could solve any difficulty, then bring Adrian into the room without realizing what she had done. He wasn't sure whe
That night, Vanessa told Julian about the invitation.“Good,” he said. “Are you worried?”“No. I'll explain calmly.”“I'll come with you.”She thought about that for a moment.“They don't know we're married. I should speak to them first. I don't want to make things difficult between you and your family.”He studied her face.“I'll take care of it.”She wasn't sure whether that meant he had accepted her answer. The next day, Yolanda greeted her with both hands outstretched. She complained that Vanessa looked thin and listed the dishes she had asked the kitchen to prepare.Edward wasn't home. That unsettled Vanessa slightly. He had always been kinder to her than Yolanda, and she had hoped to speak to them together. She withdrew her hands politely and sat on the sofa. For a while, Yolanda asked ordinary questions. Vanessa answered them, waiting. Eventually, the older woman's smile faded.“I know you and Adrian have been having difficulties. Men need handling sometimes. You can't hold on
