I had cried enough.

After spending hours cooped up in my room, I knew it was time to get over this.

And just like the universe knew exactly what I needed, my laptop beeped with a familiar notification.

There was an email.

I sat up and opened it;

  • Marrying The Wrong Brother   82 ~ Sloane

    Being back to work was absolutely the best thing that could happen to my scee racing mind. It kept me occupied and reduced thoughts of Zane drastically. We barely even saw each other anymore. I was out of the house as early as possible and came back late because I was trying to make up for all the time lost during my suspension.It was on a fine Thursday morning on what I thought would be a regular workday that I heard very familiar footsteps that sounded like someone aggressively snapping raw spaghetti noodles under a heavy rug."Oh God," I muttered under my breath. Why do these people keep letting her into my space when they know how much we hate each other? I thought. "Hello, little miss CEO." I hated the sight of her fake smile. To the rest of the world, it was endearing. But I had seen it so many times to know that there was a viper underneath that seemingly sweet smile. "Veronica.""You don't seem happy to see your stepmother." "My day is officially ruined at the sight o

    The stocks at Della-Ross Holdings were beginning to dwindle.I sat in my home office, waiting for the call I knew would be coming in any moment from then.I started at the TV screen facing my desk as I followed up on business news. Reed Industries was looking good however. With Sloane reinstated as CEO, it was bound to happen.I was truly happy for her. I saw how much it broke her to not be able to do what she loved. I hated seeing how she felt like a failure. And I was glad I was able to pull the right strings to get her back up there. She was never going to know that though.I wanted my job back too. I hated the idea of being idle and not in control of the affairs of the company my father left in my care but there was nothing I could do at the moment. I just had to let it play out. I didn't want to be erratic or try to convince the board to vote. I wanted them to beg for me to come back. They needed to realize my worth.The phone on my desk finally rang. I didn't reach for it

    "Don't let the bed bugs bite..." I added in a raspy whisper, knowing she wouldn't hear me.It hurt my heart to see how awkward things had gotten between us. I enjoyed the few laughs we shared just minutes before but even I knew it was temporary. By morning, we would be strangers again. Sometimes I wondered how we got here.Sometimes I wished I could turn back the hands of time and not reject her on those stairs like I did just a few weeks ago. But it was too late for that now. And we both knew that even though it hurt, it was for the best. ~"The T-rex is one of the most powerful dinosaurs. It's one of the largest too." I read aloud to Chloe, pointing out the glossy images from the book.The way her hazel eyes lit up with interest brought so much joy to me. "It's so pretty." She said, placing her palm on the image.The T-rex was anything but pretty to me. But if Chloe said it was, I had to agree.So I nodded and said; "It is pretty. Not as pretty as you my little angel."She gig

    "You have a delivery." Maya's excited self entered my office at lunch time.She was holding a pretty large bouquet. I stared at it, putting down the folder I was reading through.White orchids.Absolutely professional. Now that I was back, I expected presents of this sort from different business associates. What I didn't expect was who they were from and the note that came with it.I picked it up and read through.'Congratulations on your reinstatement. Never doubted you for a second.- Zane' There was no endearment. He sent it like we were coworkers or just two business people who were courteous to each other.That was the point we had gotten to?I didn't bother sniffing the flowers. I set them down on my desk and asked Maya to take care of them. She had a question in her eyes but I could see she chose to not pursue it.I was not in the mood to talk about my personal life. I was back to work and every other thing could be counted as frivolities. I went through record after recor

    By nine in the morning, the entire lobby of Reed Industries had been transformed.Cameras lined the entrance. Reporters filled the designated press area, their voices blending into a constant hum as they waited for the woman whose suspension had dominated business headlines for weeks.I stood behind the glass doors of the executive conference room, watching them from a distance."They're ready for you," Maya said beside me.I adjusted the sleeve of my blazer."How many?" I asked."Enough to make you regret becoming famous."I smiled faintly."I've survived worse."She gave me an approving nod."You know, you could smile a little more."My brows shot up. "I'm smiling."Maya disagreed. "No, you're threatening them with your eyes.""That's just my face."She laughed.Soon the doors opened and the noise hit me immediately.Flashes erupted from every direction as I stepped onto the small stage prepared for the press conference.I didn't flinch. This was something I had gotten used to even

    We are getting married tomorrow.Two days. That was all it had taken from the signed contract to the scheduled wedding. I had expected Sloane Reed to take the full three days, maybe longer. Instead she had called Patrick from the café, confirmed the date before she even stood up from the table, and

    He walked in and every head in the café turned. I had already been seated for ten minutes, black coffee in front of me that I hadn't touched, the file on the table within reach. I had chosen the corner table deliberately. Away from the windows, away from anyone who might recognize either of us and

    I woke up to my head pounding like someone was taking a hammer to it from the inside.My phone on the nightstand was lit up and buzzing in a way that communicated something had gone very wrong overnight, which I already knew, but seeing thirty seven missed calls from my secretary at eight in the mo

    The dress was beautiful and I was walking down the aisle in it. The cathedral sleeves, the pearl buttons running down the back, the train sweeping the floor behind me like something out of a magazine. Cole had picked it himself and it was perfect and with every step I took I looked exactly like a
