Chapter 4 Why Make Promises You Can't Keep?

Author: Rosie Steppe
Julia, Rosalyn's grandmother, took her hand and put it on Carl's palm.

Then, she tried to shove a card between their hands as she said, "This is the wedding fund I've saved up for you. Now that you're finally marrying Carl, you can use it for whatever you need!"

Rosalyn's tears were raining, and she was afraid to look Julia in the eyes.

News of Carl's wedding must have spread everywhere, and even Julia would have seen it, but she simply presumed that Rosalyn was going to be the bride.

Turning to Carl, she squeezed his hand as she pleaded, "Please promise me you'll be good to Rosie, Carl."

"Don't worry—I'll be good to her as long as I live," he replied. "We've vowed to always stay together, in this lifetime and the next."

Four years ago, on a business trip, Carl took her up Mount Eternity where they prayed and vowed.

It was then that Carl promised he would stay with her—not just in this life, but also the next.

But that promise was already broken in this life.

As it turned out, nothing was set in stone, and promises were made to be broken.

"Please bring me to the wedding hall on the day of," Julia said.

"We definitely will," Carl smiled. "We need to pay our respects to our elders."

For once, he wasn't a haughty CEO, but just Rosalyn's boyfriend.

Nevertheless, Rosalyn felt like she had something stuck down her windpipe as she left the nursing home.

Fighting back tears, she demanded, "Why would you make promises you can't keep?"

There was no way he was bringing Julia to his wedding, so why would he tell her otherwise?

However, Carl was staring at his phone, answering Zoe's text as he answered, "No harm in keeping the old girl cheerful—she'll forget about it soon anyway."

So everything he had told Julia was nothing more than lies—whether it was loving her and being good to her, or never leaving her.

That was when he held out his phone to Rosalyn so that she could see the screen. "Zoe made supper and sent it over to my place. I'll head over—you can take a cab home."

He was perfectly calm, but he seemed to have forgotten that she was his.

She loved him, only for him to show her that being affectionate with another woman was nothing less than hurtful.

"Yeah," she replied with just one word, as she was afraid she might start crying if she said another.

Love could stop, but the pain would still be there, tearing one part from the inside.

And over the last three months, Rosalyn had suffered the worst of that pain.

As such, she wondered if Carl would hurt too, when he learned that she was marrying someone else.

Soon, Carl and his car disappeared into the endless darkness of the night.

He said he loved her, but here she was, left alone in the desolate night…

She wasn't that lovesick—she understood that Carl's love for her had faded when Zoe returned to the country.

Even though he was willing to sweet-talk her, it was probably because she was still useful to him.

Just last week, she overheard him telling a friend, "If Zoe didn't want her to organize the wedding, I would've told her to leave."

So he kept her around because it pleased his fiancee.

Rosalyn's palm hurt from clenching, and she turned to look at her grandmother's room.

The light was still on, and she could vaguely see Julia's hunched figure.

Rosalyn was an orphan—her mother had died soon after giving birth to her.

It was Julia who had taken her in and raised her—she was Rosalyn's only family.

The fact that Julia was still alive after being diagnosed with stage four cancer two years ago was nothing short of a miracle.

All Julia wanted was to see Rosalyn marry and be happy.

And Rosalyn didn't want to disappoint her.

Taking out her phone, Rosalyn texted the contact she had set as a favorite: [Would you care to marry me?]

Rosalyn was standing in front of the dessert table. She couldn't move out of the way quickly enough, just as she shouldn't move too abruptly, or she could knock the entire table over and make things worse.Zoe had pinned her firmly against the table, making sure not to squeeze Rosalyn too much while crying out to quickly draw everyone's attention.Naturally, Rosalyn could see that Zoe was just being stubbornly obnoxious at this point, because Rosalyn herself proved immune to anything she threw at her. "Your skin is as thick as a pig's.""I had to. It's your fault for not playing along," Zoe retorted, smug despite Rosalyn's insult.Rosalyn snorted as she shoved her. "You're persistent, I'll give you that."Still, Ophelia soon reached them and demanded, "What's going on here?" Before Rosalyn could speak, Zoe had already straightened, rubbing her temples as she groaned, "Sorry, Mrs. Hammond—just feeling faint from low blood sugar. Luckily, the younger Mrs. Hammond caught me."Th

Zoe certainly didn't dare—and couldn't afford to.She knew full well what she had come to do, but Rosalyn really got under her skin, and she lost control. Subtly controlling her breaths, she swiftly replaced the rage on her face with an insincere smile. "What are you saying, Mrs. Hammond? I just want to be friends, or people would laugh at us, you know."And she was right. Even Rosalyn must never be fooled by the polite smiles from the heiress and trophy wives around her, as those are the very people who would be badmouthing her as soon as she turned away. After all, they could imagine endless scenarios of her and Zoe after they fought over the same man. However, Rosalyn simply sneered, not allowing Zoe to bail herself out so easily. "I despise being touched, Mrs. Grant. Please stay away from me."As she was clearly more irritable than usual, Zoe withdrew her hand, picking up and eating a grape to mask her embarrassment. The sour taste nearly left her choking. There was no q

Rosalyn looked toward where Ophelia was gesturing and saw Zoe standing there. She giggled in amusement, feeling a warmth inside. After all, most mother-in-laws would take exception if their sons married a woman who had been with another man, if not treat them with downright disdain.Somehow, that was completely not the case for Ophelia, and she was even warning Rosalyn about a potential threat.Giving Rosalyn a nudge, she smiled, her disdain toward Zoe completely showing on her face. "She'll make her presence known soon enough.""I know, Mother. Don't worry." Rosalyn smiled in turn, winking at her mischievously."Just come to me if anyone tries to be funny—your mother's got your back," Ophelia said.Just the word 'mother' alone seemed to fill a hole that always lingered in her heart."Go on—there's plenty to eat," Ophelia said despite not having eaten, as she was worried that Rosalyn was getting uncomfortable. At that moment, Rosalyn thought she would miss her mother-in-law wh

Isn't that enough?" Eric asked calmly, jolting Chase to his senses."Thank you, Mr. Hammond!" First, Eric turned out to be living in the opposite apartment, and now, he bought her a villa! Was he trying to keep her under house arrest? She then asked, "Have you forgotten that there are three months left to this marriage? Or less, to be precise.""Uh-huh…" Eric mumbled lazily, still half asleep, "Isn't that still two months and twelve days?"So he remembered that better than she did, down to the number of days..."Well, since you do remember, then why bother?" She sighed, as she could see that everything from the courtyard to the interior of the villa was designed entirely to her liking.Eric even knew her measurements, so Rosalyn wasn't that surprised he knew her preferences. However, her preferences weren't universal—and when they split, someone would become the new lady of this house. The renovations then were going to be a hassle…That was why Rosalyn didn't take kindly to what Eric was doing. All she wanted was to escape this mistake of a marriage, but he was metic

"We're going on a joyride!"And with that, Eric put a hand on Rosalyn's waist and led her out of the nursing room. The eye-catching car that Ken had praised earlier was still parked there. Eric then glanced at her and the car before saying, "I was telling the broker that car doesn't really suit you. Just make do with it for now, and we'll pick a better one for you later."Wait, that car was her present?!Rosalyn was a little surprised, as her car would still function after some repairs—there was no need to buy a new one.But now that Eric had brought the new car here, it would be a waste of time to even refuse. Moreover, the Hammonds might have showered her with presents, but there were plenty of things she knew she would leave behind anyway—what was another? When one's mind was free, they could accept a great many things with grace.Rosalyn didn't bother to pretend to refuse and held out her hand at Eric, who put a pretty car key on her palm. She somehow felt stylish as she
