Chapter 7 I Could Only Save One

Author: Rosie Steppe
If anything, Rosalyn was lucky for not getting a concussion despite that nasty fall.

However, the lump on the back of her head was real and could be distinctly felt if touched.

While she was touching it, she wasn't looking where she was going and bumped headlong into someone.

"Sorry… Mr. Hammond," she said as she looked up and saw the familiar face.

Eric Hammond was wearing a grey silk shirt and a tailored suit, accentuating the elegant lines of his body from shoulder to waist.

"Are you hurt?" he asked.

He was tall—the top of her head only reached his chin, so he naturally saw the lump on her head.

"I'm fine." Rosalyn took a step back, withdrawing from his hand.

He slid it into his pocket without missing a beat, his dark gaze studying her as he asked, "Do you need help?"

"I'm fine," Rosalyn repeated, and then remembered something. "Oh, congratulations on your wedding!"

He stopped looking at the lump just then with a mysterious twinkle in his eyes. "Likewise."

Likewise? What?

Was she supposed to celebrate being dumped by the man she loved for seven years as he married another woman?

Wait, she was going to get married too, and on the same day as well… so 'likewise' did make sense.

Rosalyn glanced at him again and said, "Goodbye."

With that, she was gone.

-

The fall was not completely terrible for Rosalyn—she could now take sick leave to pack her things.

Carl owned the house where she lived, and they had both lived together until three months ago.

He moved to Maple Park after Zoe returned, and this place had become her bachelorette pad.

Even so, Carl's personal effects were everywhere—his socks were in the shoe cupboard, his clothes in their shared closet, and the bar was filled with his favorite stock of alcohol.

Even the blanket he used was left on the couch.

Rosalyn never moved any of it for the last three months, as if Carl would return if she didn't.

But now, she understood.

Neither she nor those things would see the day he returned.

So she packed her things while leaving his untouched, gathering everything from decorations, trinkets, clothes, and other daily necessities.

When Carl arrived, he immediately noticed that something was wrong but couldn't put his finger on what it was.

He stopped coming since he got together with Zoe and was surprised to find the place unfamiliar.

Rosalyn was surprised that he came too. "Yes, Mr. Grant? Does Ms. Quayle need something else?"

Carl stared at her pale face and asked, "How's your head?"

"I won't die," she replied brusquely.

After she got hurt, she had to go to the hospital on her own because he was hugging Zoe.

Because Zoe was scared.

Rosalyn was only human—even if he was heartless, and she wouldn't beg for his sympathy, she still had a temper.

She had been with him when he was down and out.

Even if there was no love involved, he should at least show some loyalty to a comrade whom they had fought to build an empire with.

But when she got hurt, he had told her to go to the hospital on her own.

Carl strode up right then, pulling her into his arms and brushing her hair off the lump, touching it.

It hurt so much that she cringed and pushed him away.

Carl reached for her hand again nonetheless. "Why didn't you get that checked? We're going to the hospital."

Rosalyn quickly avoided him. "The doctor said it's a blood blister. What, am I supposed to drain the whole thing at the hospital?"

It would only shrink as the bad blood was slowly reintegrated.

Carl grimaced, feeling pained for her. "Look, Rosie… It's not like I didn't want to save you. It just happened out of the blue, and I could only save one…"

He could only save one, so he saved the one he loved.

Instincts truly reflected the heart as they said, and Rosalyn understood even without him telling her.

"She's your fiancee—I understand," she said, hanging her head and unable to stop the tears welling up in her eyes.

"Rosie…"

But before Carl could explain, his phone rang.

Seeing the number, he silenced it and said, "Just get some rest—someone else will handle the wedding, but you have to be there on the day of."

Rosalyn was standing in front of the dessert table. She couldn't move out of the way quickly enough, just as she shouldn't move too abruptly, or she could knock the entire table over and make things worse.Zoe had pinned her firmly against the table, making sure not to squeeze Rosalyn too much while crying out to quickly draw everyone's attention.Naturally, Rosalyn could see that Zoe was just being stubbornly obnoxious at this point, because Rosalyn herself proved immune to anything she threw at her. "Your skin is as thick as a pig's.""I had to. It's your fault for not playing along," Zoe retorted, smug despite Rosalyn's insult.Rosalyn snorted as she shoved her. "You're persistent, I'll give you that."Still, Ophelia soon reached them and demanded, "What's going on here?" Before Rosalyn could speak, Zoe had already straightened, rubbing her temples as she groaned, "Sorry, Mrs. Hammond—just feeling faint from low blood sugar. Luckily, the younger Mrs. Hammond caught me."Th

Zoe certainly didn't dare—and couldn't afford to.She knew full well what she had come to do, but Rosalyn really got under her skin, and she lost control. Subtly controlling her breaths, she swiftly replaced the rage on her face with an insincere smile. "What are you saying, Mrs. Hammond? I just want to be friends, or people would laugh at us, you know."And she was right. Even Rosalyn must never be fooled by the polite smiles from the heiress and trophy wives around her, as those are the very people who would be badmouthing her as soon as she turned away. After all, they could imagine endless scenarios of her and Zoe after they fought over the same man. However, Rosalyn simply sneered, not allowing Zoe to bail herself out so easily. "I despise being touched, Mrs. Grant. Please stay away from me."As she was clearly more irritable than usual, Zoe withdrew her hand, picking up and eating a grape to mask her embarrassment. The sour taste nearly left her choking. There was no q

Rosalyn looked toward where Ophelia was gesturing and saw Zoe standing there. She giggled in amusement, feeling a warmth inside. After all, most mother-in-laws would take exception if their sons married a woman who had been with another man, if not treat them with downright disdain.Somehow, that was completely not the case for Ophelia, and she was even warning Rosalyn about a potential threat.Giving Rosalyn a nudge, she smiled, her disdain toward Zoe completely showing on her face. "She'll make her presence known soon enough.""I know, Mother. Don't worry." Rosalyn smiled in turn, winking at her mischievously."Just come to me if anyone tries to be funny—your mother's got your back," Ophelia said.Just the word 'mother' alone seemed to fill a hole that always lingered in her heart."Go on—there's plenty to eat," Ophelia said despite not having eaten, as she was worried that Rosalyn was getting uncomfortable. At that moment, Rosalyn thought she would miss her mother-in-law wh

Or less, to be precise.""Uh-huh…" Eric mumbled lazily, still half asleep, "Isn't that still two months and twelve days?"So he remembered that better than she did, down to the number of days..."Well, since you do remember, then why bother?" She sighed, as she could see that everything from the courtyard to the interior of the villa was designed entirely to her liking.Eric even knew her measurements, so Rosalyn wasn't that surprised he knew her preferences. However, her preferences weren't universal—and when they split, someone would become the new lady of this house. The renovations then were going to be a hassle…That was why Rosalyn didn't take kindly to what Eric was doing. All she wanted was to escape this mistake of a marriage, but he was metic

Eric then glanced at her and the car before saying, "I was telling the broker that car doesn't really suit you. Just make do with it for now, and we'll pick a better one for you later."Wait, that car was her present?!Rosalyn was a little surprised, as her car would still function after some repairs—there was no need to buy a new one.But now that Eric had brought the new car here, it would be a waste of time to even refuse. Moreover, the Hammonds might have showered her with presents, but there were plenty of things she knew she would leave behind anyway—what was another? When one's mind was free, they could accept a great many things with grace.Rosalyn didn't bother to pretend to refuse and held out her hand at Eric, who put a pretty car key on her palm. She somehow felt stylish as she
