Chapter 9 The Last Time I'll Cry for You

Author: Rosie Steppe
[Are you still going to marry me tomorrow?]

Rosalyn glanced at Julia, who was sound asleep, when she received the text late at night.

She then replied: [Here's my address—come pick me and my grandmother up tomorrow. Just don't come if you change your mind.]

[See you tomorrow, my bride!]

Just seeing the reply left Rosalyn with swelling bitterness inside.

She would be a bride soon too, but her groom was an internet friend whom she had never met.

It wasn't like lost love had pushed her over the brink—she just didn't want Julia to worry for her or be disappointed.

Moreover, even though she hadn't met her internet friend before, they had been chatting online for ten years.

Since a human only lives a few decades, someone willing to spend ten years with her was enough to win her trust.

-

It was midnight when Carl called.

Not wanting to disturb Julia, Rosalyn went outside to answer the call. "Is there anything else, Mr. Grant?"

Carl was left rubbing between his brows on the other end of the call—she seemed to say that a lot lately.

"Why aren't you home?" he asked.

For some reason, he had been feeling irritable and uneasy.

As such, he drove to the house where he and Rosalyn had lived for six years, but the bedroom was neat and tidy.

She wasn't there.

Rosalyn could tell where he was, but she didn't know if he had noticed that her possessions were already gone.

"I'm with Grandma," she admitted.

Carl looked around the dark room.

He entered without turning on the lights because he was worried about waking Rosalyn up, but now, he needed the endless darkness to stay calm.

He sat on the couch, noticing for the first time how eerie the house was when it was this silent. "What are you doing over there?"

Hearing that, Rosalyn knew right away that he never noticed that she had left with her things.

So he didn't even care that much—if he did, he would've noticed that her clothes were missing from the closet and her toothbrush was gone from the bathroom.

The rest of the house would have no sign of her, for that matter.

Still, it suited her fine—she wouldn't have any problems during her wedding tomorrow.

"Didn't you say you'll bring Grandma along?" Rosalyn asked, ignoring his question.

Carl was silent for a few beats. "I'll definitely send someone over."

"No, it's fine. I'll come with Grandma… I'm sure you'll be busy tomorrow," Rosalyn said, understanding as ever.

"Rosie," Carl called out her name, his deep voice clearly fighting back swelling emotions. "Y-You have to come tomorrow, do you understand?"

"Why me?" Rosalyn asked, staring above at the stars.

She noticed just then that they were especially beautiful tonight as there were plenty of them covering the entire night sky.

Carl sighed softly. "Just come as you promised, and you'll know why tomorrow."

But she wouldn't go tomorrow—and he would lose her forever.

So she didn't want to know whatever he was going to say.

"Carl," Rosalyn called out to him just then, her expression calm and neutral. "All the best."

Carl could cry for some reason when he heard those words.

Rubbing his face to stop it, he said, "I'd rather you tell me directly tomorrow."

Rosalyn raised a brow—was he trying to prove something to Zoe?

But Rosalyn was reluctant to think about it at this point.

Shivering against the night breeze, she sighed. "I'm sleepy. I'm turning in."

She hung up, still looking up at the ocean of stars overhead when her eyes closed, a single tear trickling down the corner of her eye.

"This is the last time I'll cry for you, Carl Grant."

Rosalyn was standing in front of the dessert table. She couldn't move out of the way quickly enough, just as she shouldn't move too abruptly, or she could knock the entire table over and make things worse.Zoe had pinned her firmly against the table, making sure not to squeeze Rosalyn too much while crying out to quickly draw everyone's attention.Naturally, Rosalyn could see that Zoe was just being stubbornly obnoxious at this point, because Rosalyn herself proved immune to anything she threw at her. "Your skin is as thick as a pig's.""I had to. It's your fault for not playing along," Zoe retorted, smug despite Rosalyn's insult.Rosalyn snorted as she shoved her. "You're persistent, I'll give you that."Still, Ophelia soon reached them and demanded, "What's going on here?" Before Rosalyn could speak, Zoe had already straightened, rubbing her temples as she groaned, "Sorry, Mrs. Hammond—just feeling faint from low blood sugar. Luckily, the younger Mrs. Hammond caught me."Th

Zoe certainly didn't dare—and couldn't afford to.She knew full well what she had come to do, but Rosalyn really got under her skin, and she lost control. Subtly controlling her breaths, she swiftly replaced the rage on her face with an insincere smile. "What are you saying, Mrs. Hammond? I just want to be friends, or people would laugh at us, you know."And she was right. Even Rosalyn must never be fooled by the polite smiles from the heiress and trophy wives around her, as those are the very people who would be badmouthing her as soon as she turned away. After all, they could imagine endless scenarios of her and Zoe after they fought over the same man. However, Rosalyn simply sneered, not allowing Zoe to bail herself out so easily. "I despise being touched, Mrs. Grant. Please stay away from me."As she was clearly more irritable than usual, Zoe withdrew her hand, picking up and eating a grape to mask her embarrassment. The sour taste nearly left her choking. There was no q

Rosalyn looked toward where Ophelia was gesturing and saw Zoe standing there. She giggled in amusement, feeling a warmth inside. After all, most mother-in-laws would take exception if their sons married a woman who had been with another man, if not treat them with downright disdain.Somehow, that was completely not the case for Ophelia, and she was even warning Rosalyn about a potential threat.Giving Rosalyn a nudge, she smiled, her disdain toward Zoe completely showing on her face. "She'll make her presence known soon enough.""I know, Mother. Don't worry." Rosalyn smiled in turn, winking at her mischievously."Just come to me if anyone tries to be funny—your mother's got your back," Ophelia said.Just the word 'mother' alone seemed to fill a hole that always lingered in her heart."Go on—there's plenty to eat," Ophelia said despite not having eaten, as she was worried that Rosalyn was getting uncomfortable. At that moment, Rosalyn thought she would miss her mother-in-law wh

Isn't that enough?" Eric asked calmly, jolting Chase to his senses."Thank you, Mr. Hammond!" First, Eric turned out to be living in the opposite apartment, and now, he bought her a villa! Was he trying to keep her under house arrest? She then asked, "Have you forgotten that there are three months left to this marriage? Or less, to be precise.""Uh-huh…" Eric mumbled lazily, still half asleep, "Isn't that still two months and twelve days?"So he remembered that better than she did, down to the number of days..."Well, since you do remember, then why bother?" She sighed, as she could see that everything from the courtyard to the interior of the villa was designed entirely to her liking.Eric even knew her measurements, so Rosalyn wasn't that surprised he knew her preferences. However, her preferences weren't universal—and when they split, someone would become the new lady of this house. The renovations then were going to be a hassle…That was why Rosalyn didn't take kindly to what Eric was doing. All she wanted was to escape this mistake of a marriage, but he was metic

Eric then glanced at her and the car before saying, "I was telling the broker that car doesn't really suit you. Just make do with it for now, and we'll pick a better one for you later."Wait, that car was her present?!Rosalyn was a little surprised, as her car would still function after some repairs—there was no need to buy a new one.But now that Eric had brought the new car here, it would be a waste of time to even refuse. Moreover, the Hammonds might have showered her with presents, but there were plenty of things she knew she would leave behind anyway—what was another? When one's mind was free, they could accept a great many things with grace.Rosalyn didn't bother to pretend to refuse and held out her hand at Eric, who put a pretty car key on her palm. She somehow felt stylish as she
