Chapter 4

Author: Fox’s Tail
Three days later, I arrived at the wedding as promised. The moment Evelyn saw me step into the venue, the tension on her face instantly faded.

I withdrew my gaze, moving calmly to find my seat, only for someone to stick out a foot and trip me hard. I fell straight into the towering nine-tier wedding cake.

The decorations and frosting came crashing down with me, smearing all over my tailored black suit, making me look utterly pathetic. The wine glass I had been holding slipped from my hand and shattered against the floor. Shards of glass flew everywhere, one cutting into my face, and blood began streaming from my temple.

The hall erupted in shock. Every eye was glued to me.

With my vision blurred by frosting, I struggled to get up. However, before I could even steady myself, someone shoved me to the ground again.

Cole’s furious shout rang out from above.

“Jace, what the hell is your problem? We invited you here out of kindness. Not only did you not bring a gift, but now you’re trying to ruin our wedding? You can’t stand to see us happy. Is that it?”

The wedding had drawn a large crowd, most of them eager to see Valerie make her first public appearance with her mysterious husband. Now, they rushed forward to curry favor with Evelyn instead.

“Unbelievable. Who causes trouble at Evelyn Gates’s wedding? He must have a death wish!”

“Look at that ring on his hand. Doesn’t it look exactly like the ‘Eternal Hearts’ rings Valerie bought at auction three years ago? How dare he wear something like that here?”

“Everyone knows Valerie worships her husband. For him to show up flaunting a fake ring in public… Does he have a death wish?”

Evelyn heard the whispers. Her chest rose and fell with fury, her beautiful eyes practically spitting fire.

“Jace, you’re a curse! I must have been blind to ever fall for you. Wearing that cheap fake ring, are you waiting for Val to show up and deal with you herself?”

She lifted her gown and stomped toward me. Then, without hesitation, she drove her heel into the ring finger of my left hand and ground it down cruelly.

Agony exploded from the base of my finger, shooting straight to my heart. I tried to resist, but Cole barked an order, and several people pinned me down at once. I was trapped, unable to move.

My vision was still clouded with frosting, my body held down tight. In desperation, I shouted, “Valerie is my wife!”

Evelyn threw her head back and laughed like I’d told the biggest joke in the world. She twisted her heel harder, the stiletto tip threatening to snap my finger clean off.

“Still pretending, huh? Wait until Val gets here. She adores her husband. When she sees you pulling this stunt, you’re done for!”

Seeing that she wouldn’t listen, despair filled my chest.

I gritted my teeth, vowing silently, ‘When the time comes, every single one of them will pay.’

Evelyn pressed down even harder until the sharp crack of bone breaking echoed loudly. Pain ripped through me, forcing a muffled groan from my throat.

Then, suddenly, the weight holding me down lifted. Everyone was scrambling to fix their clothes and makeup, eyes shining as they turned toward the entrance.

As the attendants pulled open the grand doors of the hall, Valerie walked in with our daughter, Emma, surrounded by admiration like a star at the center of the universe.

My secret crush has finally become real.… The more I read, the more shocked I became. Every page of the diary was filled with confessions of love for me.All this time, without me knowing, Valerie had loved me for so many years.I turned to the very last page, reluctant to close it, but when I finally did, I looked up and saw Valerie standing right in front of me, her face flushed bright red.“You… you read everything?”H

I shoved her away and pulled Valerie into my arms.“Evelyn, stop disgusting me. I’ve known all along your amnesia was fake. Even your death was staged. You just thought I was boring and went looking for thrills! These past three years, while you were gallivanting around the world with Cole, I wasn’t doing any worse. In fact, I found the love of my life.“Your so-called devotion came too late. The moment you faked your death, everything between us turned to smoke. It was gone for good.”Evelyn opened her mouth to speak, but Valerie cut her off with a sharp slap. For the three years I’d known Valerie, she had always carried herself with grace. Even when angry, she was calm and composed. However, tonight, striking out again and again, was the first time I had ever seen her lose control. She ordered the bodyguards to drag Evelyn away.“Evelyn, I’ve warned you more than once. Don’t think you can push my limits just because we share blood. You had no right to come back without my permi

I never expected Valerie to go this far.“By the way, you don’t know what happened to Evelyn, do you?”Tyler looked at me with malicious glee, and I motioned for him to go on.“After that day, Evelyn suddenly vanished, like she had disappeared off the face of the earth. Everyone said Valerie killed her, but I don’t really buy it. Blood’s still blood, you know? Even if they didn’t grow up together and were never close, I doubt Valerie would do something that insane. Word on the street is that she sent Evelyn to Africa.”He clicked his tongue and continued, “Evelyn’s been pampered her whole life and has never suffered a day. If she really ended up in Africa, and with Valerie making sure she didn’t live comfortably, who knows if she’s even still alive?”“And what about Cole?” I pressed.“Cole went after you hard, and since he has no blood ties to Valerie, his fate… Well, let’s just say those who know, know.”Zach trailed off, and I caught the meaning behind his words.I was about

Everyone broke into a cold sweat at the thought. After all, Valerie was infamous in the circle for how fiercely she loved her husband.Once, a rival company deliberately tried to sabotage the Gates’ family business, but she didn’t even care. She just brushed it off completely. However, after they kidnapped me one time, the rival’s CEO and his relatives mysteriously vanished from the city.Another time, someone casually mocked, “Why won’t Valerie’s husband ever show his face? Maybe he’s hiding some kind of illness?”That family ended up bankrupt and ruined, driven to complete destruction by Valerie herself. Stories like this were endless.Everyone in the room trembled. This time, what they had done was a direct attack on me. Compared to a few careless words, their punishment would be even more brutal. While I lay slumped in the corner, Valerie rushed to my side and helped me up. She gently wiped the cream from my face, her eyes full of pain.“I told you we should’ve revealed your

“Yeah, Ms. Gates, you don’t know how arrogant this man was. Even knowing you were about to arrive, he still claimed to be your husband. He even flashed a cheap ring, as if none of us could tell the difference.”At that moment, Evelyn stepped forward and said, “Don’t worry, Val. I already taught this man a lesson. I stomped on his fingers and broke them, and I tossed his ring away. No one’s going to impersonate my brother-in-law now. You can rest easy.”Then, she added with a sneer, “Honestly, it’s embarrassing. I actually know him. I even dated him once. I don’t know what I was thinking back then, choosing a loser like him. He’s so vain for trying to pass himself off as my brother-in-law.“Clearly, he wanted to use me to get to know you and shoot straight to the top. But I would never give him that chance. Everyone knows how much you love your husband. Back then, when someone said a single bad word about him, you had them drowned at sea. We’ve all seen how deep your love runs. There

Valerie strode forward, carrying our little girl in her arms. Emma wasn’t very old, but her words were surprisingly clear as she kept calling out for me, her dad.“Mommy, where’s Daddy? Didn’t you say he would be here today? Why haven’t we seen him yet?”As soon as she finished, she squirmed, insisting on getting down from her mother’s arms. The delicate, doll-like child landed on the ground, instantly drawing everyone’s attention. A bodyguard followed closely behind, watching her every step as if terrified she might fall.Just then, Cole stepped forward, holding a plate of cupcakes.“I love kids. Come here, sweetheart. Do you want a cupcake?”He smiled warmly, but Emma frowned, slapped the tray out of his hand, and snapped, “Go away! You’re smiling like a bad guy. My daddy told me never to eat food from strangers. And you don’t look like a good person at all. Stay away from me. I want to find my daddy!”She stomped her foot, then pointed at Cole.“My daddy said he was coming t
