Found my prey

DARIUS

Her blue eyes swept over me, like she was trying to piece together a puzzle she couldn’t quite solve.

“It seems you’re busy,” I said, my voice low.

She startled, blinking as if shaking herself out of a trance. “I’m sorry, Alpha. I was… lost in thought.”

A slow smirk tugged at my lips. I hadn’t expected my prey to look this tempting. The crimson dress clung to her like a lover’s touch, tracing every curve, every sinful line of her body. It took every ounce of control not to reach out and claim what I already considered mine.

“I should… get a drink,” she murmured, already edging away as though my presence burned her.

I tilted my head, studying the quick, almost desperate way she moved. Why the rush to escape? She couldn’t possibly know the real reason I’d returned to her pack. No one did. Not yet.

You only run from danger when you recognize it—when you can feel its teeth closing in. And Meira? She didn’t even see the jaws about to snap shut around her.

I doubted she’d recognize the man standing before her—the man her father had once broken without mercy. He wouldn’t recognize me either. Not now. Not after I’d rebuilt myself from the ashes he left behind.

“Hold up… Luna Meira.”

She froze instantly, as if the title itself was a chain she was desperate to break. “You don’t have to call me Luna. I’m just… Meira,” she said quickly, her voice tight, her gaze skittering away like I was a plague she couldn’t afford to catch.

I didn’t let her retreat into that false distance. My hand lifted, fingers brushing the delicate curve of her chin, tilting her face toward mine. Her skin was warm beneath my touch, her breath catching ever so slightly.

“I prefer,” I murmured, letting my voice drop into a command, “to look into the eyes of the person I’m speaking to.”

Her blue irises locked with mine—uncertain, guarded, but with a flicker of something she didn’t dare name. I held her there, letting the silence stretch, until she knew I wasn’t a man easily dismissed.

Her gaze trembled, but she didn’t look away this time. For the briefest moment, I saw her—not the guarded woman before me, but the girl she used to be. The one who laughed under the moonlight, barefoot in the grass, blonde hair whipping in the wind… before her own pack broke her spirit and ground her into dust.

That girl was gone.

“The Meira I knew,” I said quietly, voice low and dangerous, “would never hide her eyes from me.”

Her lips parted, confusion flickering in her gaze. “Huh?” The word slipped out in a breath, startled.

Of course she wouldn’t remember. The years, the pain, the betrayal—they’d buried those memories deep.

But I remembered. Every moment. Every scream.

“Good day, my King,” Elizabeth said, stepping into view as if she belonged there.

I didn’t bother hiding my irritation at the interruption. She looked almost exactly as she had years ago; time hadn’t done much to her face. But it didn’t matter. I knew she wouldn’t recognize me. Back then, I’d been nothing to her but a wolfless boy she barely spared a glance for.

Now? I was the Lycan King. A title she could never ignore, even if she tried.

My gaze swept over her once, slow and deliberate, before I turned my head away. She wasn’t worth my time, let alone my words.

“I’m sorry to interrupt,” Elizabeth continued smoothly, though the edge in her voice was impossible to miss. “Meira isn’t meant to be seen with… the likes of you.” Her eyes slid toward Meira, dripping with open disgust.

“I’ll just excuse myself,” Meira murmured, already shrinking back, her confidence visibly slipping.

“No.” My voice cut through the space, sharp enough to halt her retreat. My gaze stayed locked on Elizabeth. “What exactly did you mean by that?”

Elizabeth hesitated, clearly weighing her words. “I’m… looking out for you, Alpha.” She faltered under my stare, then forced out the word like it tasted foul. “She might be… cursed.”

I stepped toward her, slow and deliberate. “Are you telling your Alpha what to do?” My tone left no room for interpretation; it was less a question and more a warning.

Her eyes widened. “N-No… of course not,” she stammered, finally realizing she had already crossed a line.

“Then leave,” I ordered, my voice dropping to a deadly calm. “And go waste your breath on matters that matter to you. Because if you stand here one more second, I’ll start deciding what’s worth keeping… and what isn’t.”

She paled, bowed her head, and retreated without another word.

“Thank you,” she said, her voice barely more than a whisper.

My gaze dropped to her, unreadable. “For what?” I asked, stepping closer. My hand reached up, slow and deliberate, tucking a loose strand of her blonde hair behind her ear. My fingers lingered just long enough to feel the heat of her skin and the faint tremor in her breath.

“For… standing up for me,” she replied, her blue eyes meeting mine. They were wide and unguarded—filled with an innocence that seemed almost too pure to be real.

But I’d seen that kind of innocence before.

It was the same look my father had once believed in. The same softness he’d mistaken for loyalty. The same gentle eyes that had promised peace before driving a blade between his ribs.

And it had cost him everything.

I had learned from his mistake. Brutally. Painfully. I knew better than to trust what looked harmless. I knew how easily innocence could rot into betrayal.

“Let’s go dance,” I offered, my voice steady but threaded with something darker. I extended my hand, palm open, the way one might offer both an invitation and a challenge. She hesitated only a fraction before laying her soft palms against mine.

Her touch was warm—too warm—a dangerous contrast to the ice I carried in my veins. I pulled her closer, my gaze never leaving hers, yet I could feel her attention drifting across the grand hall. Her eyes flicked toward the far side of the room, and something in her expression shifted.

That’s when I heard it.

a familiar voice I had not heard in over a decade, but one that had carved itself into my memory like a scar that refused to fade.

“How dare you, Meira.”

DARIUSShe didn't know I watched from the greenhouse light.I hadn't planned to start doing it. The first morning she went out there I was at the study window with my coffee and I saw it come on through the glass panels in the early dark and I stood there longer than I had any reason to. Then I went back to my desk. Didn't mention it to anyone. Didn't particularly examine it myself. That was eleven days ago.Now I looked for it every morning the way you look for something that has quietly stopped being optional. Whether it was on. Whether it stayed on. Whether she came back inside before or after Hilda put breakfast out.Useful information. None of it.I was collecting it anyway.---I knocked on her sitting room door at nine on a Tuesday. Told her to dress warm. She looked at me the way she did when she was deciding whether to push back or just move, and then she went to get her coat without saying anything. One of her quieter mornings. I had started being able to tell the difference

MeiraSera arrived at eight in the morning with a garment bag over one arm and the expression of someone who had already made seventeen decisions before breakfast and was prepared to make seventeen more before lunch. She hung the garment bag on the back of the sitting room door and unzipped it without preamble."Before you say anything," she said, "try it on."It was a deep green dress, simple in the way that took considerable effort to achieve. Long sleeves, a clean neckline, nothing fussy about it. The kind of thing that didn't ask anything of the person wearing it, just let them exist inside it without having to compete."It's not what I would have chosen," I said."I know. That's why I chose it." She held it out. "You would have chosen something safe. Something that disappeared. This doesn't disappear but it also doesn't perform." She looked at me evenly. "There's a difference."I took it and went to change. She was right, which I wasn't going to tell her while she could still loo

MEIRAI changed my outfit three times. The first was too formal, the kind of thing you wore when you needed people to take you seriously, and I didn't want to walk into that appointment looking like I was trying to impress anyone. The second was too casual, a soft knit I'd been sleeping in most of the week, and I wasn't ready to sit across from a doctor in something that still had yesterday in it. The third was just a dress. Blue, simple, nothing remarkable about it. I put it on and looked at myself in the mirror for longer than I needed to and then went downstairs before I could change again.Darius was already in the entrance hall, jacket on, keys in hand, checking something on his phone with the focused quiet of a man who had already organized the entire morning before I'd finished brushing my hair.He looked up when I came down the stairs. He didn't say anything about the dress or the fact that I had clearly been crying at some point in the last hour, which was perceptive of him b

MEIRA The statement went out at nine in the morning. I knew because Sera sent me a copy at eight fifty-five with a single line underneath it: Goes live in five minutes. Put your phone down after you read it. It was one paragraph. Clean, direct, nothing in it that could be pulled apart and reassembled into something else. The Lycan King had taken a chosen mate. Her name was Meira Nicholas, formerly Luna of the Silver Fang Pack. The ceremony would take place within the week. That was all. I read it twice, set my phone face-down on the nightstand, and went to make tea. By the time the kettle boiled my phone had vibrated itself to the edge of the nightstand. I watched it from across the room. I didn't go back for it. The numbers could wait. Whatever my father was saying, whatever Kaelan was saying somewhere with Isabella's head on his shoulder and his hand on her stomach — it could all wait until I had finished my tea and eaten something and sat with myself for ten uninterrupte

MEIRA The estate sat at the end of a long private road flanked by trees so tall they blocked out the sky on both sides, turning the drive into something that felt less like an arrival and more like a descent. I watched it through the car window with my hands folded in my lap and my overnight bag on the seat beside me — all I had managed to pack in the hour Sera had given me before the car arrived. Everything else I owned was still at the packhouse. I left it. I wasn't sure I'd go back for it. The main house came into view as the road curved, and my first thought was that it didn't look the way I'd expected. I had imagined something cold — all hard lines and dark stone, the kind of place that announced power by making you feel small the moment you looked at it. The scale of it was undeniable, vast, three stories, built from pale stone that caught the morning light and held it. But there were old climbing roses on the eastern wall, dormant and scraggly in the winter, and the ground

The Devil's BargainMEIRA"How dare you, Meira."I didn't need to turn around. That voice had been the soundtrack to every bad thing that had ever happened to me. I'd heard it through walls, through closed doors, through the thin partition of my childhood bedroom while it told my father things about me that weren't true — or worse, things that were.Alpha Cain. My father.Darius's hand shifted at my back. Just slightly. Just enough. I don't think he even meant for me to notice, but I did, and it was the only reason I didn't visibly flinch.I turned around slowly. My father was standing at the edge of the dance floor with two of his enforcers behind him like furniture. He was dressed the way he always dressed when there were people watching — sharply, deliberately, every button done up, every crease in the right place. The face he showed the world was composed and commanding. The eyes he turned on me were neither of those things."You." He didn't even glance at Darius. Just looked at
