Flashback “Would I remain your favorite person in the whole wide world?” Violet eyes looked at me hopefully. I giggled and continued jumping the stones along the river. “That would be my mate someday, silly.” I giggled again. Caelum hummed contemplatively, his black brows furrowed in thought. “Well, I'm just going to have to be your mate then." He declared, using one hand to push back his black curls. I always thought he had beautiful hair. I blushed, my cheeks turning red. “T-that's not how it works." I stuttered, flustered. Jenna, one of the older she-wolf found her mate two days ago and she had been talking about how amazing it is. *Why not?” His violet eyes were filled with confusion. He had such stunning eyes. I looked away immediately. “Just because." I nodded firmly. “Well, that's a stupid reason. When I'm 18, I'm coming to your pack and I'm carrying you all the way home.” He smiled proudly, while my heart kept beating faster. My cheek burned and I looked away. At seven, I was old enough to be affected by his words. “Whatever." I mumbled and pushed him into the river. End of flashback “Well, isn't this such an interesting twist of event?” His plush lips curled sadistically. I mentally berated myself for looking at his lips. Two seconds of having a mate bond and suddenly I can't seem to look anywhere else but at him. I need to be better than this. “What are you doing here? Came to gloat?" I sneered at him. Suddenly a wave of electricity ran through me, my nerve endings screamed in pain. I locked my jaw together to prevent the scream that was building up in my throat. I still whimpered though. I had just been tasered. By Alric. “We don't talk that way to invited guests, not one as special as him.” He tutted. I looked at my mate, his face was unreadable. Just my luck to get a mate that doesn't care. “What makes him so special?" My voice came out in a whisper, broken, my head tilted downwards. “Of course you wouldn't know, you've been locked in here for most of your life.” Alric mocked. I gritted my teeth. The stupid bastard was the one that locked me down here. "This is The Crimson Alpha, Caelum Ravenwood, Alpha of the famous Black Moon pack." And the son of the man that killed my parents and left me alone in this world, I thought bitterly. Moon goddess, what are you playing at? Haven't I been punished enough? Rumors of the Crimson Alpha had reached even us that the world had forgotten. A man who had slain hundreds of wolves while in his human form. A man whose blood lust far exceeded anyone in history. A man rumored to drink the blood of his enemies as wine. “I presume that our deal still remains the same." His voice broke the silence. Something deep within me stirred at the sound of his voice. It was husky and smooth with just the slightest hint of an accent. “Well, there are more things to put into consideration now. She's your mate, surely you'd pay higher.” Alric grinned greedily. I admired his courage. “Tell me Alric, do you favor your heart beating in your chest rather than in my hand?” he said, while his violet eyes never wavered from mine. "Of course Alpha, I'll release her right now.” I eyed Alric in disgust, coward. Like he was able to read my mind, Caelum smiled. The door of the cage was unlocked and opened. Since I was leaning on it, I stumbled only for a hand to grab my arm. I gasped. For the second time, electricity ran through me to the core of my being, only this time, it brought pleasure. My arm tingled where his hand touched. My heart skipped and my breath caught. Everything around me disappeared, leaving only the feel of his hand on mine. It was like a piece of me I didn't know was missing ,slotted into place. Every part of me desired something more, I couldn't understand it but I felt it deep within my soul. I wanted him, no, I needed him. I took a step closer to him, my destiny, my mate. The man whose parents murdered yours, something whispered in my head. Like I was doused in cold water, I came to my senses. Quickly, I took a step back, his hand fell away from my arm. A shadow of something passed behind his eyes, too quickly for me to identify. What was I just about to do? Go to our mate, go to our mate, my wolf chanted in my head. You don't have any choice in this matter, Astrid, you left me alone for 13 years, I told her and she quieted down. “My beta would get in touch with you, Alric. For now, I have a little bird to break, shall we?” Caelum smirked I pushed past him, ignoring the hand he had stretched out for me to take. Jokes on you, Caelum, you can't break what's already broken. His eyes glimmered with amusement and his lips twitched upwards. He fell in steps beside me, always matching me pace for pace, no matter how I increased or decreased it. A black sleek car waited outside. A man with greying hair opened the door to the backseat. I hesitated. A part of me wishing to be back in my cage where everything was familiar. “What are you waiting for? The car doesn't bite, I promise. I on the other hand, well, you'd just have to see for yourself.” He whispered in my ear, his breath minty and warm. I shuddered, a sigh of pleasure escaping me, every part of me hyper aware of the man besides me. I shook my head to clear the daze. I whirled around and poked him in the chest “Stay far away from me, Ravenwood.” He smiled like he knew something I didn't. I detested every inch of that smile. We're going to have so much fun, Red.” He chuckled manically. Red, his childhood nickname for me as a result of my fiery red hair. I entered the luxurious vehicle. Everything was clean and looked new. I felt self conscious when I saw how grimy my legs looked. Why do I care? In fact, I hope some of the grime rubs off on his leather seats. I chuckled inwardly. He entered after me, the air filling with his scent. He smelled like the rain, light and refreshing, and like something expensive too. The car started. “Where are we going?” I asked, curious. "My place. Where you'd be staying from now on—as my mate of course.” There was amusement in his tone. I bet this was all a source of entertainment to him, I thought bitterly. I bet he has a nice butt, Astrid gleefully said. 13 years, I reminded her, she piped down. The idea of living with him had anxiety filling my veins, I fidgeted with my fingers, my right leg bouncing. A warm firm hand gripped my leg. I gasped at the sparks and the tingles. With great effort, I pushed his hand away from my leg. “You can't fight the mate bond forever. Sooner or later, you'd have to give in to me.” His face was hidden from my view but I could tell just how much this whole situation amused him. Give in? To the son of the man who destroyed my family? Never! I would fight this with my last breath. Why did the moon goddess do this to me? To punish me? Or to punish him? A voice whispered, a plan quickly forming in my head. I had heard stories of how rejection affected werewolves. The stronger the bond, the more the effect. A werewolf rejected when he first meets his mate might just lose his wolf, but for a person who loses his mate after forming a strong bond, death is inevitable. My strength was nothing compared to the Crimson Alpha and I would never have the resources he did, but this little bond between us was all I had to get my revenge on him. I knew I couldn't fight the mate bond forever, but all I had to do was make him fall first then reject him. The sins of the father was about to be visited on the child, I smiledWren's POV The next few days passed in a blur, time had lost its meaning to me. I wasn't eating much, I wasn't drinking much, I was just barely living. I was alive but not living, only existing. The hollowness in my chest grew bigger with every passing day but I hid it under fake smiles, smiles that I was sure everyone could see through but no one wanted to call me out on, maybe they were afraid to look closely and see the truth reflected in my eyes, well, until now.Robin slumped on my bed and sighed dramatically, “You have to got to get out of your room. You have been inside ever since you got back.” That was the term everyone had been using ‘got back’, it rubbed me the wrong way, one would think I travelled instead, like I had chosen to leave. Even now, I wanted to scream, I wanted to remind them that what happened wasn'ta prolonged vacation, I was kidnapped but I swallowed my words and gave a fake smile instead, the same one I had been giving everyone.“I'm always happier indoor
Caelum's POV It felt like I had been struck with a blow, something warm unfurled in my chest, “pregnant?” I asked, breathlessly. He nodded, I laughed in disbelief and rubbed my unoccupied hand over my face, i could feel the rough stubble on my chin. I was going to be a father, excited laughter burst out of me, I felt like I was on top of the world. Just then, something he said sunk in.“Wait, was?” I asked, confused. The sadness and grief in the doctor's eyes told me the answer but I didn't want to accept it. No, there was no way my pup was gone, I refused to accept it, I couldn't have gained and lost a child in just one second.“I'm sorry, alpha, she lost the pup.” The doctor said more but I couldn't hear it over the ringing in my ears. The words kept replaying over and over till I was drowning in them.Lost the pup….Lost the pup……I tasted bile at the back of my throat, my world continued spinning. I could hear Xyler howling in pain in the back of my mind. My pup, my first child,
Caelum's POV A sharp knock brought me out of my musings about Wren. I had been sitting in my office all day, it hadn't been a deliberate decision to be isolated from the rest of my pack but it was a wise, much needed one. I was hanging on to my control by a single frayed thread, and I was worried that if it snapped, I would either destroy everything in sight or worse, fall apart. I couldn’t afford to fall apart, not now that my mate needed me.Grief was lodged in the back of my throat like a huge ball I couldn't swallow. I wanted to break things, I wanted to scream at the world's unfairness, haven't we had enough?! I have never felt more helpless, it was the worst feeling that could happen to a man.The knock sounded again, softer and more uncertain. I opened my mouth to respond but no sound came out, I swallowed the lump that had lodged itself in my throat and tried again.“Come in.” My voice was hoarse and cracked from disuse. I cleared my throat but it made no difference, it only
Wren's POV My consciousness trickled in slow, hazy waves. Bit by bit my senses awakened until I became dimly aware of the dull ache spreading through my body. It hurt so much to even twitch a finger so I stayed still. I laid there, wondering every minute, if this was how I was going to die.Time blurred and soon the pain dulled enough for me to move. With a quiet groan leaving my lips, I slowly pushed myself into a more comfortable sitting position, my body trembling with the effort. It was then i saw it, my white gown streaked with blood as though a massacre had happened on the fabric. I gasped sharply at the gruesome sight. A mournful keen left my lips as I remembered how beautiful and untouchable I had felt when I had worn it. I swallowed the lump in my throat as I looked at what was left of my ceremonial gown.“You're awake, good.” A voice intoned robotically. I squinted at the place where it had come from but all I could see were shadows I leaned back into the headboard. “Come
“That's all? That's all we needed from her? I went through all that trouble for nothing?! I almost got killed man!”Voices, those were the first thing I heard as I slowly drifted into consciousness. My eyes felt like they were glued shut together and my body felt as weak as a new born's. “Just this is enough.” A calm feminine voice said. I stiffened when I heard the unfamiliar voice, the past events were slowly coming back to me but a part of me desperately wished it was all a dream.“I could have gotten that from a scratch, why did I have to take her? Alpha Caelum is out for my head right now!” A familiar male voice said. I recognised him as the rogue that had disrupted my ceremony. I subtly shifted my limbs and barely held back a pained hiss as I felt the pure silver chains come in contact with bare skin.Yup, I was kidnapped alright. “Caelum would still be out for your blood if you had so much as breathe on her. Anyways, it's rude to talk about our guest when we can be talking t
Wren's POV It was a man, a stranger I didn't recognise, he stood with his hands behind his back, baring his teeth at us in a leering grin. He looked rough and unkempt. The wind blew past me and a rotten scent wafted past me, the smell of rogues. The man was a rogue. In an instant, the pack warriors had him surrounded, but he appeared unaffected by the menacing look they wore. Caelum pushed me gently behind him, the man smiled at the gesture. “Who the fuck are you?” Caelum snarled at the rogue, his canines dropped.“Ah, who I am doesn't matter. What matters is what I want.” The man said, he looked unfazed by all the negative attention he was getting.“You have three seconds before I beat the shit out of you.” Caelum growled, I could read the tension in his body and I knew that the only thing keeping him where he was was the thought that he had to protect me.“Nice ceremony by the way, almost brought tears to my eyes. Luna wren, you looked startling and that gown is simply marvellous.
Wren's POV Caelum and I sat in front of the elders, hand in hand, the idea was to present a united front and also to keep Caelum calm. He kept staring them down, his eyes flashing between the black eyes of his wolf and his normal violet eyes.We had been sitting here for almost 20 minutes in silen
Wren's POV “It might not be what you think, please wren, keep calm.” Dane advised, panic dancing around in his eyes. I sat down on a cushion, my mind was a whirlpool of thoughts, my heart was racing and it felt like I couldn't breathe. Thoughts were flying around my head and it felt like a heavy w
Wren's povI grunted as I dragged the heaps of clothes towards the window. One thing caelum adored was his clothes, it was evident in the way he dressed and the fact that his closet was bigger than mine. I noticed brands upon brands, none of them cheap and I smiled evilly. “Red, what are you doing
Wren's povI took a deep breath and exhaled shakily, anxiety and dread filling my veins. My heart pounded at the thought of what could happen in the next minutes. I was standing in front of I and Caelum's room, my hand poised above the doorknob, ready to open. I would either leave this place in pea
