CHAPTER SEVEN: The Ghost In The Mirror

Morning came by fast . I barely got enough sleep

I woke up with the scent of forest and cocoa still clinging to my skin, a physical weight that made my stomach churn.

Every time I moved, the friction of the sheets reminded me of the way Liam’s hands had felt rough, possessive, and entirely forbidden.

I scrubbed myself in the shower until my skin was raw, desperate to wash away the evidence of my betrayal before I had to face her.

“Kaira? Are you awake, sweetie?”

My mother’s voice through the door made me jump, nearly slipping on the wet floor

“Yeah, Mom, just a second,” I called back, my voice sounding thin and fake to my own ears.

When I finally stepped into the kitchen, she was there, looking radiant in a cream colored sweater, her hair pulled back in a soft clip. She looked happy. She looked like a woman who trusted her life and her daughter completely.

“I thought we could head into the village today,” she said, handing  a cup of coffee toward me. “Just the two of us.

We haven’t had a real shopping day since the move, and you need some new things for the upcoming pack gala.”

The gala. The event where she would stand beside Liam as his Luna, and I would have to stand in the shadows, pretending I didn’t know the taste of his mouth.

“I will  love that,” I lied, forcing a smile that felt like it was cracking my face.

The village was bustling, a charming stretch of cobblestone streets and boutique shops that catered to the pack’s elite. Under any other circumstance, I would have loved this. But today, every dress I touched felt like lead.

“Oh, Kaira, look at this one!”

My mother pulled a silk gown from a rack, a deep, shinny  emerald. “It would look stunning with your eyes. Liam always says green is the color of the forest after the rain. He has such an eye for detail, doesn't he?”

I felt a sharp, stabbing pain in my chest. Yes, Mom. He has a great eye for detail. Especially when he’s pinning me against a stone wall.

“It’s beautiful,” I whispered, taking the dress from her. My fingers trembled.

As the day went on, the guilt didn't just sit in my stomach it  became a living thing. We sat at a small cafe for lunch, and she spent the whole time talking about her future with Liam how he was the "rock" she had always needed, and how lucky she felt that he had accepted me as his own.

“He cares about you so much, Kaira,” she said, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand. Her wedding ring caught the light, blinding me. “He’s so protective of you. It gives me such peace of mind knowing you’re safe under his authority.”

I had to look away. I watched a stray leaf fly down the street, unable to meet her gaze. Every kind word she said about him felt like a hot iron pressed against my conscience.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to tell her the truth just to stop the pressure building in my lungs, but I knew it would destroy her.

“You’re very quiet today,” she noted, her brow furrowing with concern. “Is the shift ,   is it still hurting?”

“A little,” I said, seizing the excuse. “It’s just a lot to process. The evaluation, the training, everything.”

“I know, baby. But you have us. We’re a family now.”

Family. The word felt like a dirty joke.

Later, in the dressing room of a high-end boutique, I caught sight of myself in the three-way mirror.

I was wearing a lace slip, my shoulders bare. I looked at the faint, reddened mark on my collarbone the bruise Liam had left in his hunger.

I quickly pulled my hair forward to hide it, tears stinging my eyes.

I wasn't just Kaira, the late shifter anymore. I was a ghost in my own life, walking through a world I had already betrayed. I looked at my reflection and didn't see a wolf or a daughter. I saw a traitor.

As we walked back to the car, arms filled  with shopping bags, my mother laughed at something I said, leaning her head on my shoulder for a brief second.

She smelled like home. Like vanilla and safety.

And I realized, with a soul crushing certainty, that the more I wanted Liam, the more I was erasing her. The line he drew wasn't just between him and me it was a circle that excluded her entirely. And I was the one holding the match that would eventually burn it all down.

I did not want to hear people talking about the wedding or see them getting the house ready for a party. I sat on my bed and looked at the moon through the window.I felt like the "plan" was a giant stone sitting on my chest. It was hard to breathe. I kept thinking about the dream. I kept seeing Liam taking Lucy’s hand while I stood in the shadows.Suddenly, I heard a very soft knock on my door. My heart jumped into my throat. I stood up and walked to the door. I opened it just a tiny bit. It was Liam. He was not wearing his fancy suit or his tie. He wore a simple black shirt, and his hair was messy as if he had been running his hands through it all night. He looked tired, but his eyes were bright. He pushed the door open and walked in quickly. He turned around and locked the door with a soft click. Before I could speak, he p

Chapter 30: The Taste of Alpaha’s Lies Kaira’s pov The night was very bad for me. I could not sleep well. When I finally closed my eyes, I had a terrible dream. In my dream, the sun was bright but the air was cold. Everyone in the pack was standing in a big field. There were white flowers everywhere. I was standing far away behind a tree. Then, I heard music. I saw Lucy. She was wearing a long white wedding dress. She looked very beautiful. She walked down a long carpet with a big smile. At the end of the carpet stood the groom. It was Liam. He was wearing his best black suit. He took Lucy’s hand and looked into her eyes. He did not look for me. He did not even know I was there. In the dream, they kissed and everyone cheered. The sound was very loud and it hurt my ears. I tried to yell his name, but no sound came out of my mouth. I felt like a ghost. Chapter Twenty Nine : The Alpha’s Plan Kaira’s pov I did not sleep at all. I sat by my window and watched the sun come up. My bag was packed and hidden under my bed. I was ready to run. I was ready to leave the only home I ever knew because the pain was too much to carry. But early in the morning, there was a knock on my door. It was not my mother. It was a tall guard with a serious face. "Kaira," he said. "The Alpha wants to see you in his private room. Now." My heart jumped. Was he going to throw me out himself? Was he going to tell me that Isaac and Lucy were officially moving in? I followed the guard through the halls. My legs felt like lead. When I entered Liam’s room, the guard stayed outside and closed the door. Liam was standing by his desk. He looked tired, as if he had stayed up all night, too. When he saw me, his cold "Alpha mask" finally broke. He moved across the room in two big steps. Before I could say a word, his arms were around me. He pulled me close

I did not want to see the other servants whispering. But late at night, my stomach felt empty and loud. I needed a glass of water and some bread. I walked slowly to the kitchen. The house was very quiet. Most of the pack was sleeping. I thought I would be alone, but when I walked into the kitchen, the lights were already on. Lucy was sitting at the long wooden table. She was drinking a cup of tea. She looked at me and smiled, but it was not a nice smile. It was the smile of a cat watching a mouse. "I thought you would be hungry," Lucy said. She pointed to a chair. "Sit down, Kaira. We should talk." "I don't want to talk to you," I said. My voice was small. I went to get a glass of water. "You should listen," Lucy said. She stood up and walked toward me. "Today in the meeting, you saw the truth. Liam did not protect you

If he told Lucy to be quiet, she would have to listen. The path to the Alpha’s tower was very long. Usually, I was very careful when I went there. I would look around every corner to make sure no one saw me. But today, I was too scared to be careful. I ran up the winding stairs. My breath was short and it hurt to breathe. My legs felt weak, but I did not stop. I reached the large wooden doors of his office. I did not knock. I was too upset to remember my manners. I pushed the doors open. My hair was messy and my face was red from running. "Liam! I need to tell you—" The words stopped in my throat. The room was not empty. Liam was sitting be
