It was a motion smaller than a blink.

She stepped off to the side, and in the same instant a short knife glinted in her hand. The leader's eyes widened; he laughed, the kind of desperate, gasping laugh men make when they've decided to die loudly.

The knife flashed.

The world slurred.

I heard the cut as if it were a hum, quiet, final. The leader's laugh choked into a wet, surprised sound and then nothing. The knife dropped from Kira's fingers, slick. Her face was unreadable.

He was dead.
