Samantha’s Pov
Luca grabbed me by the waist and yanked me onto his shoulders. “Put me down!” I resisted, kicking my legs and flailing my hands in the air. “No.” “Omg! You are being so immature right now! Get me down!” “I'm an Alpha—you do not talk to me that way!” He didn’t mind my kicks; instead, he held my legs down and walked down the hallway. “Luca!” He smacked my behind. “That's Alpha Luca, for you. You can also call me mate.” “Ew, no way.” Despite all my resistance, I didn’t notice we had reached his room until he closed the door and threw me onto the bed—my rustled hair framing my face. “Sit,” he commanded when I tried to get off the bed. I stayed still and watched him do absolutely nothing but breathe hollow breaths, looking at me with his arms crossed over his chest. “Awesome… you got me to your room with an impeccable entrance, and all you're doing now is stand there and watch me.” “Yes,” he responded, unbothered. What the hell is wrong with him? Does he even think at all? “Oh my God!” I groaned, throwing my hand up in frustration. “Samantha, why did you really come to my pack? And don’t lie to me—I’ve had enough of your lies.” Not this again-please. This question would bring up thoughts about Killain that I desperately want to forget. Memories about our shared love and… my lost babies. “Why do you think I’m lying?” “I know you are. I can sense when someone lies, and since we are mates, you are obliged to tell me.” “I’m not obliged to tell you anything. That’s my business, not yours,” I said as I got to my feet. “Sit back down, Samantha. I’m not done.” “Is this how you treat your mates?” “I’ve never had one,” he responded. That’s a lie. I’m pretty sure Alpha Luca is way older than me. I haven’t heard of him getting married or having spouses, but he must’ve had a mate sometime. Or else, how would he have been ruler this long with no mate? “That’s a lie.” “Unlike you, I don’t lie, Samantha.” ‘You have to tell him, Sam. He has to know this if we want a good relationship with our mate.’ ‘He is not our mate! The moon goddess has surely mismatched us,’ I responded to Aldrina. She had been quiet since the party. A part of me knew it was because she was still trying to study our surroundings and regain her strength. But somehow, I couldn’t help but feel that she enjoyed Luca’s company. “Trust me, I totally believe we’ve been mismatched, so I’m waiting patiently for the moon goddess to do her thing,” Luca answered, directing my attention back to him. “You can hear me?!” “Yes,” he grunted. “How is that possible?! We just found out we were mates recently, and there’s no way you can hear me because we’re from different packs.” He swallowed and eyed me carefully. I pushed away the thought of his daring eyes watching me so intently-thoughts that were pushing me to imagine the most wonderful and dirtiest things about him. “You know something,” I said. “Spill.” “The night I met you and brought you to the castle, your wolf, Aldrina, asked me to save you. That is absolutely not possible, and it got me thinking…” He walked over to where I sat. “I thought about so many answers to my questions, and then I suspected you and I were mates until we both felt the mate bond later.” “And?” “It’s not possible, Samantha. It has never happened before.” “I don’t believe you,” I spat. “I don’t believe anything you’re telling me because you knew we were mates and didn’t even tell me.” “It wouldn’t have made any difference. Now that we know, we have to look for a way to stop it.” “You said Aldrina could mindlink with you personally?” I asked, unsure whether to say or think anything else. He could hear my thoughts, and I could slip up. How long has he known? “Yes.” “Why can’t I mindlink with your wolf yet?” “Maybe because Cillian hasn't said anything yet,” he responded matter-of-factly. “I know you're hiding something from me, and it has to do with Killain Black. Who were you to him?” I sighed. I thought I had the upper hand in this. Not telling him meant I got to keep the better part of me—the hurt and vulnerable part. The part who is grieving for her lost, unborn babies while I showed the unbothered and straightforward side. But does it really matter now? He will find out later—one way or another. And truthfully, I have nowhere else to go. Silver Rose might not be my home, but it looks like a place to create one. I hate it here—I honestly do. But I need time to be Samantha Forbes again, something that seems impossible right now. “Alpha Killain Black was my mate,” I started, watching Luca from the corner of my eye. “We weren't mates before that night.” “The night I saved you?” “Yes. Killain and I were courting, you see. We loved each other,” I scoffed. “At least, I thought he loved me. Somehow, I always think the best of people even when I don’t want to. I always give them one chance—just that one chance to change and take away all the doubts. I believe everyone has some kind of love in them… and it sickens me that I believe that.” “To me, Killain was my future. The man of my dreams. No one believed in me like he did. My pack hated me—I was a disgrace, the odd one among them. But whenever I was with Killain, I felt powerful. I felt whole—needed, loved.” “He rejected you,” Luca said. “Yes… he did. I couldn’t even tell him about the pregnancy. I didn’t have time to,” I sniffed and wiped the tears already falling from my cheeks. “I wanted to surprise him that night. I thought it would make him happy.” I laughed sourly. “I was wrong to think that he wanted to spend eternity with me. What went wrong between us? He never had a problem with my status or who I was before—until that night.” “Do you regret leaving your pack?” Luca asked quietly. If I didn’t know how much he hated me, I would have thought he felt pity from the raspiness in his voice. “Yes. Not because of what Killain and my so-called best friend did to me, but because of the betrayal and mockery I’ve gotten from my own pack—my people.” His face looked pale, as if drained of blood. Telling Luca that I am the Alpha of the Blood Rose Pack would be an unbelievable story. Everyone knows about my parents’ death and that I didn’t survive. “Your people? What do you mean?” But who cares? I’ve left Blood Rose and won’t set foot on that land until I’m prepared to reclaim my throne. To get my own birthright—Killain be damned. “Killain is not the true Alpha of Blood Rose—I am.”Samantha’s PovHe is so close… I can't think when he is this near to me. My body reacts differently from how I want it to react.“You're too close,” I whispered, and he just smiled. His hands crept up my dress, and I pulled myself up to sit on the table where the pots had lain.“Why are you just giving that big smirk without saying anything?”He stopped moving and focused his eyes on my face. “I fear that I may say something that would ruin the moment, and believe me or not when I say this, I don't want this moment to end.”“Why?” I asked, and he looked at me, bewildered. In my defense, this is the closest a man has gotten to me since Killain, and I do not trust Luca’s words one bit.“Don't avoid what's going on,” he whispered.“I-I don't know what you're talking about.” His hands cupped my cheeks, and with his hands on my blushing face, his skin touching mine, I felt like exploding, and Goddess, I do not mind at all.“What's happening between us? Don't act like you don't feel it too.
Samantha’s POVWe arrived at the party on time. With my hands holding Luca's, we walked into the room. Everyone's eyes were on us, but I didn’t bother to look back at their shocked faces.“Be careful… don’t say anything you shouldn’t,” Luca warned as we moved further into the room.“What party is this, by the way?”“It’s a small gathering with the allies of Silver Rose. It wasn’t hosted by me, but by them, to settle unfinished business. And what better way for people to settle unfinished business than by showing off their beautiful wives and the expensive jewelry they’re wearing?”“Oh.”“Now, if you need me, I’ll be right there,” he said, pointing to the side where some distinguished men—whom I guessed were the ally pack’s leaders—stood. “You can call me or just… think about me. I think that’ll do.”“Just leave. You’re insufferable.”He laughed before trotting off to the other end of the room. I enjoy teasing Luca as much as he enjoys teasing me. At least it keeps my mind off a lot of
Samantha’s PovI entered the garden—stepping onto its stone path. The rich hush of perfect roses, yellow daisies, and tulips wafted through the warm breeze. Luca stood gracefully in the middle of the garden, wearing nothing but dress pants and a light dress shirt that exposed his chest and was clearly see-through. The dark green material did him no justice.“You're late.”“A girl needs time to prepare,” I responded, coming to a stop in front of him.“So?” I asked, not minding the clear view I had of him. Alpha Luca might be a dauntless man, and maybe my nemesis, but he was definitely a gorgeous man. His almost white hair, streaked with grey, sculpted his face perfectly. It was short, but just enough to run my hands through.“I hate lateness. I remember I told you that.”I scoffed. “Let’s just start.”He nodded and moved closer to me. “You need to free your mind and think about this. Focus on Aldrina, and let her take the lead.”“Okay,” I whispered and closed my eyes.‘It’s okay, Sam.
Samantha’s Pov“What did you just say?”“Killain is not the true Alpha, I am. My parents were killed in an ambush—”“Your father was Alpha Duncan,” Luca said in realization.“Yes…”“But you bear a different surname… If I'm not mistaken, you should be answering Black because Duncan and Rick were brothers.”“Yeah… I had it changed because I hid all my life.”I looked at Luca who had his eyes glued to my face, watching me in disbelief. Who was I kidding? Did I really think he would believe me?“You don't believe me…”“No, I'm just trying to… process all of this.”“And you still do not believe it, do you?”“Duncan and his wife…and daughter were killed in that ambush. No one knows who set them up—I bet it was that prick, Rick—still…”“His Beta, Morris, saved me. He promised my mother he would keep me safe and that is exactly what he did. Rick knows, but he thinks I'm not a threat to him because I altered my scent.”“You were protecting yourself,” he said.“Yes… and I hate how I got so dist

What the hell is wrong with him? Does he even think at all?“
Luca’s Pov“You can't,” I dismissed. He must be joking because not in a million years would I let him touch her.“What does she have to say about this?” I looked at Samantha, who just smiled back at me.“I’m sure she’s fine with it. Aren’t you, love?”Love?! Who says that?I clenched my fists in anger before grabbing Samantha’s hand and walking out of the room-not bothering with the shocked expressions on Tyler and Clarisse’s faces.I shoved Samantha against the wall when we got to the hidden part of the hallway.“What was that about?!”“What? I have no idea what you’re talking about.”Is she kidding me? “You’re flirting with my right-hand man and my friend. That wasn’t part of the deal.”“I met a handsome man who seemed interested in me and danced with him. It’s not a flirt, Alpha.”She thinks he's handsome. What does she think about me? Her eyes gleamed with mischief as she looked at me. I pushed closer to her, and with my raised hand above her head, cornered her against the wall.
Luca’s PovThe guests drank their wines as they gallivanted around the ballroom, glasses in hand and gossip on their lips.“So… Clarisse is in the other room, waiting for your go ahead,” Tyler, my friend and adviser, said beside me. It bothers me that I haven't told him about Samantha and what we discussed. But I’m a man of my word, and to ensure this goes as smoothly as possible, not even he should know. It’s not a matter of trust—it’s being careful, because people can fuck you up anytime.“What about Alpha Basil and his wife? They should be here with Clarisse.” My suitable candidate for Luna was Clarisse Basil, daughter of Alpha Basil of the Mystic Rose Pack. I chose Clarisse when the council mentioned the pack having a Luna. She isn’t the person I would have originally chosen, but I was desperate. Since I have no mate and I care about my kingdom, I reconsidered.“They’re here. She says she wants to see you personally in your chambers, Your Highness.”“We don’t have much time to mee
Samantha’s PovI gulped as I listened to his words.“You knew we were mates, didn't you?” I asked. He studied me for a while before nodding.“Why didn't you say anything?”“Would you have listened?” he countered. True… but he had no right to keep it from me.“Let's get you back to the castle.” Alpha Luca carried me in his arms, and we left the woods.‘So much for escaping. This is our mate, Sam. The moon goddess has granted us a second chance, mate.’‘Our mate rejected us and left us with the despair of our children. Alpha Luca might be mean and not who we wanted, but the moon goddess must have a reason. We should stay here, get stronger and better,’ Aldrina finished. If I stay here in the Silver Rose Pack, I won't know what my fate will be—or what could happen. How do I act around Luca? How can I be sure this is not just a measly mistake from the moon goddess herself?“Get down,” Luca instructed, snapping me out of my thoughts.“What?”“We're back at the castle.” I looked back at the
Samantha’s POVI waited until there was no sound in the hallway. Grabbing the hem of my dress, I quietly ran to the end of the hall.Luca hadn’t returned to his room, and the maids had left after assuming I was well taken care of.‘You’re making a big mistake, girl! Luca won’t hurt you in any way!’“Not now, Aldrina,” I whispered. I didn’t expect her to understand. I knew he didn’t actually believe me when I told him Killain and I weren’t mates. I didn’t care-I’d leave on my own. Luckily, I reached the back door in the kitchen and tugged at the handle. Damn! It was locked.I removed one of the hairpins from my hair and picked the lock. The lock-picking classes with Killain hadn’t gone to waste after all. I walked quickly the moment I got out past the castle walls. The cool breeze rushed through my hair, and I looked around, acquainting myself with the kingdom’s developments. People walked by the road; bars roared with merry cheers and the clinking of beer glasses. I trotted down the r
