—should I drive you to the research institute?"

I shook my head. "No need. I quit."

Damon froze, his brow furrowing slightly. "Why did you suddenly quit?"

I looked up, my gaze steady. "I'm tired. I want to rest for a while."

Damon was silent for a few seconds, then reached out to ruffle my hair. "Quitting is good. Research work is too exhausting, and besides..."

His fingers gently traced my waist, his voice low and husky. "If you quit your job, we'll have more time to deepen our bond. And after our mating ceremony, you'll be the pack's Luna. You'll have pack management duties too. You'll be very busy."

I stepped away from his touch, my tone cold. "You should go handle your business."

After Damon left, I spent most of the day throwing away all those mementos that carried our memories.

Standing in the empty living room, I felt like something was blocking my chest, making it hard to breathe.

Just then, my phone suddenly vibrated.

I picked it up and saw an unknown text message.

"3 PM today, Central Street Restaurant. Meet me. I am Damon Blackwood's destined mate."

My fingers clenched the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white.

I pushed open the restaurant door, and the wind chimes chimed crisply.

I immediately spotted a woman in haute couture sitting in the VIP booth, polishing an Ironwood Pack crest ring—a token only the Ironwood Pack Alpha could possess. Yet I had never seen it on Damon.

"My name is Lydia Ashford, and I'm Damon Blackwood's destined mate." Lydia cut straight to the point, her tone carrying a hint of provocation. "We recognized each other the moment we first shifted. Our packs have already arranged our engagement."

I didn't speak, just looked at her calmly, my eyes as still as stagnant water.

Lydia clearly hadn't expected this reaction. She frowned. "You and Damon have already submitted your bonding application, and now he suddenly has a destined mate. Don't you have anything to ask?"

I forced a smile, my heart completely cold.

Ask? What was there left to ask? Ever since I overheard those words outside the hunting grounds office, I was completely done with Damon Blackwood.

Nothing he did could surprise me anymore.

Seeing my silence, Lydia's expression darkened.

I had revealed my identity expecting to see Sage Rivers break down hysterically, but this girl was like a block of ice—so cold I couldn't find anywhere to strike.

She gritted her teeth, her tone turning sharp. "To expand the northern territories' influence, Ironwood Pack and my Ashen Peaks Pack will be united in marriage soon. Damon confessed that applying to bond with you was just to use you. No matter who you are, he'll abandon you immediately. So I advise you to leave voluntarily. I can even give you some money. Otherwise, you're just embarrassing yourself."

I looked up, my gaze steady and calm. "When will your marriage alliance be announced?"

Lydia paused, then smiled smugly. "Early next month. The exact date isn't set yet, but it won't be long."

Early next month—right after the mating ceremony.

So Damon had planned it all along. Use me to threaten my brother into withdrawing from the Alpha King race during the mating ceremony, then marry into the Ashen Peaks Pack alliance.

Damon Blackwood, you truly have no heart.

My voice was flat. "Did you investigate me? If you had, you'd know I don't lack money. If you came here today to humiliate me, you miscalculated."

Lydia's face instantly turned ugly. I glanced at her and added, "And let me remind you—Damon Blackwood has no heart. He doesn't love anyone but himself. Marriage alliances for mutual benefit are fine, but if you fall for him, you're dead."

I stood up to leave, but Lydia suddenly shot up and grabbed my wrist, her voice shrill. "How dare you say that about him!"

Before I could react, Lydia had grabbed a cup of scalding silver water from behind her and threw it at me.

I couldn't dodge in time. The burning silver water splashed across my body. I was frozen by the excruciating pain, unable to move.

But Lydia wasn't satisfied. She shoved me hard to the ground.

My wolf was suppressed by the silver and couldn't emerge. My back slammed hard against the table corner. I crashed to the floor, my head hitting the ground with a sharp pain. Everything went blurry, and I could feel blood flowing.

Just then, the restaurant door was thrown open.

"Lydia Ashford, what are you doing!"

A cold voice suddenly rang out behind me, filled with suppressed fury.

I looked up through my blurred vision to see Damon striding over, several pack guards following behind him. He wore a black coat that made his expression look even more terrifyingly dark.

He shifted into his Alpha wolf form and used all his strength to shove Lydia away, sending her flying to the ground.

Then he stripped off his coat to wrap around me, his voice trembling slightly. "Sage, are you hurt?"

Lydia endured the pain and stared at him in disbelief. "Damon, I'm your destined mate! You've already sworn before the Moon Goddess that you would bond with me! You're attacking me for her sake?!"

They had never seen their Alpha so broken.I had changed out of my wedding dress into a simple white dress and walked over to Damon.I held a medical kit in my hands and gently placed it in front of him."Your blood has soaked through your clothes. Take care of it yourself." My voice was calm but carried a hint of distance.Damon looked up slowly, his eyes bloodshot and full of pain. "Sage, do you really... not love me anymore?"I didn't speak, just looked down at him, my eyes showing no wavering."Answer me!" Damon's voice cracked. "Just once, answer me honestly!""I already did," I replied coldly. "In that text message I sent you. I don't love you anymore."Damon's hands tr

The entire hall fell silent. I looked up, my eyes carrying complex emotions—surprise, anger, and something that might have been pity."Damon Blackwood, why did you come?"My voice was so cold, so different from how I used to say his name with warmth and love.Damon's voice carried pleading. "Sage, I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have used you or hurt you. But I... I really fell in love with you. Give me one chance, please? I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you, loving you."I stood up from my chair, my wedding dress rustling. Several Stormfang Pack members stepped closer, ready to intervene."One chance?" I repeated, my voice rising. "One chance? I gave you five years of chances, Damon!""That's different—""No, it's not!" I cut him off. "Every day I loved you was a chance. Every time I trusted you was a chance. Every time I believed your lies was a chance!"My eyes turned cold, my voice carrying no warmth. "Damon Blackwood, I don't love you anymore. His men nodded, their eyes carrying helplessness and growing concern."Alpha, you've been unconscious for two weeks," one of them said carefully. "The healer said your wolf was severely damaged. We thought you might never wake up."Damon's heart felt like it was being crushed, the pain almost suffocating him.His chest was wrapped in thick bandages, faintly seeping blood, but he seemed to feel no pain as he threw off the covers to get out of bed."No, they can't bond. I have to stop this.""Sage is mine! Sage is mine!"The room fell silent. His men had never heard their Alpha sound so broken, so desperate."Damon! Are you insane?!" His Beta Marcus stepped forward, grabbing his shoulders. "Your wounds haven't healed! Garrett Rivers was really fucking brutal, poisoning you with wolf's bane. You're still rushing over there—do you have a death wish?!""Let go of me!" Damon shoved Marcus away with surprising strength. "I don't care about the wounds! I don't care about dying!"His voice crac

The Beta was momentarily stunned by the casual tone, but seeing Garrett's ruthless expression in the rearview mirror, he understood the full meaning."Garrett, what are you doing?" I asked, noticing the change in his demeanor."Protecting you," he said simply. "Like I should have done years ago."As soon as the words fell, several Beta bodyguards emerged from nearby alleys. They moved with military precision, surrounding Damon before he could react."What the hell—" Damon spun around, finally realizing the trap."Damon Blackwood," Marcus announced formally. "By order of Alpha Garrett Rivers, you're under arrest for assault, kidnapping, and attempted murder of pack royalty.""This is Stormfang territory," another guard added. "You have no authority here."They injected Damon with wolf's bane before he could shift or fight back. The drug hit his system immediately, making him stagger."No!" Damon struggled weakly as they bound him with silver chains. "Sage! Tell them to stop! You know I

"Sage! Sage!"Damon's voice echoed through the streets, raw and desperate. His feet pounded against the pavement as he chased our car, blood seeping through his shirt from his unhealed wounds."Stop the car!" he screamed. "Please! Just stop!"His men followed behind him, trying to catch up to their Alpha who had lost all sense of dignity and pride. In the car, Garrett watched Damon's crazed figure in the rearview mirror, his jaw tightening with each passing second.I sat rigidly in the passenger seat, my hands clenched in my lap. Despite everything, seeing Damon like this stirred something uncomfortable in my chest."He's going to collapse," I said quietly, watching him stumble but keep running."Good," Garrett replied coldly. "Let him."But I could see the concern in Garrett's eyes as he glanced at me. He pulled the car over suddenly, making my heart jump."Why are we stopping?" I asked, panic creeping into my voice.Garrett turned to face me fully, his expression serious. "Sage, can

But I looked up at him with steady eyes and said word by word, "It's not fake, Damon Blackwood. It's real."My voice was calm, final. "Damon Blackwood, I fell in love with my brother—yes, your most hated mortal enemy. Our bonding application has been approved by the Alpha Council. Now he can legally mark me, become my official mate, and be with me for life. Are you satisfied?"The words hit him like physical blows. His knees buckled, and only his grip on a nearby wall kept him upright."You're lying," he gasped. "You love me. I know you love me.""I did love you," I said quietly. "Once. Before I learned what you really were.""Sage, please—""Don't," I cut him off. "Just don't."With that, I took Garrett's hand, our fingers intertwining naturally, and we turned to leave. The sight of our joined hands sent a bolt of pure agony through Damon's chest.Witnessing me and Garrett with our fingers intertwined, Damon's eyes were full of disbelief."This isn't happening," he muttered to himself
