  • Mated to Rival Kings   CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Darian's POVThe Elders didn't linger. Once they were satisfied that we were physically inside the suite and the heavy oak doors were shut, they retreated to whatever dark corner of the mansion they inhabited. With how large it was, we could go months without even seeing each other. The guards took up their posts downstairs leaving us by ourselves. We didn't talk. The exhaustion of the run and the shock of the new living arrangements were too much for conversation. We just retreated to our separate rooms quietly. My room was spacious and cold. It was decorated in deep blues and heavy mahogany, with a bed large enough for four people. I stood by the window for a long time, looking out at the moonlit grounds. It felt surreal. My mate was sleeping just a few feet away, separated only by a wall and a few yards of lounge carpet. What is going to happen now? I wondered. The Council would eventually demand a choice. Would Raven have to pick one of us? And if she did, could I really live wit

  • Mated to Rival Kings   CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Raven's POV Before I could even wrap my head around Diane being dragged out of the mud, a massive human arm wrapped around my middle. With a grunt of effort, I was hauled upward, the suction of the bog popping as I was pulled free. I landed on solid ground, my fur matted with stinking peat and my heart hammering against my ribs. I scrambled to my paws and looked over at Diane. A huge, battle-scarred gray wolf was standing over her. He was twice the size of any Alpha I had ever seen but not as big as the Kings. He loomed over Diane’s smaller, shaking form, growling a low, threatening sound that vibrated in my own chest. But he wasn't attacking. He began licking her over, his tongue rough as he cleaned the thick mud from her face and neck. It was a strange, aggressive kind of care. When he seemed satisfied that she wasn't going to die, he simply stepped off her, turned and walked into the dark woods without a second glance. What the hell? I thought, my ears twitching. "Shift."

  • Mated to Rival Kings   CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Raven’s POVBeing sandwiched between two Kings during a slow dance was an experience I never thought I’d have. I could feel the heat radiating off both of them. Behind me, I could feel the unmistakable bulge of Valen’s hardness pressing against my back, but to my surprise, he wasn't trying to rub lewdly against me. He was just... dancing. He followed Darian’s lead, swaying his hips in time with mine. I actually admired his self-control. I suppose after spending years trying to stop his wolf from going crazy, his iron-clad control over his own body was a given.Darian was just as intense. He didn't look away once, his amber eyes locked onto mine as we moved. It felt like I was the only person in the world to them, and despite the weirdness of it, it was a great experience. For a moment, the fear of the future faded, replaced by the warmth of being wanted.Later on, the music picked up and we started to mingle with the other guests. I noticed a pattern pretty quickly. People would floc

  • Mated to Rival Kings   CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Raven's POVWhen I stepped back into our room, the air felt different. It wasn't the comfortable, messy chatter I was used to. Sheila and Dan were sitting on their beds, and as soon as I walked in, they sat up straight, their eyes wide. They were keeping a strange, respectable distance from me, like I was something dangerous."Oh, stop being ridiculous," I said, tossing my shawl onto my bed. "I’m still Raven. I haven’t grown a second head."Sheila gave me a roguish smile, but she didn't move any closer. "Well, you’ll be Queen Raven in a short while. Or Double Queen. Is that even a thing? I don't know how to act around a future Queen."Dan just nodded in solemn agreement, looking at me like I was a high-ranking Alpha he had to impress. It was exhausting. I looked over at Diane, who was sitting quietly on the edge of her bed, her head down. She hadn't said a word.I walked over, grabbed Diane’s wrist, and dragged her out of the room into the quiet hallway. I needed to talk to her privat

  • Mated to Rival Kings   CHAPTER TWELVE

Raven’s POVThe silence that followed the messenger’s announcement was broken by a sound I didn’t expect. Valen burst into laughter. It was loud and full of mockery. He crossed his arms, his shoulders shaking with amusement as he looked at Darian."Well, well," Valen chuckled, his black eyes dancing with mischief. "Isn't that your future Queen? The lovely Lady Celeste?"My heart gave a little jolt. Future Queen? I looked at Darian, my eyebrows shooting up. Was he engaged? The thought made a weird, uncomfortable knot form in my stomach. I had just found out this man was my mate, and now I was hearing about a Queen.Darian didn't look at me at first. He shot a look at Valen that was so piercing I was surprised it didn't draw blood. Then, he turned to me and gave a small, incredibly awkward smile. He looked like he wanted the ground to open up and swallow him whole."Won't you go after her?" Valen rambled on, clearly enjoying Darian's misery. "Aren't you worried? You really should go, yo

  • Mated to Rival Kings   CHAPTER ELEVEN

Darian's POV Watching them lead Raven toward the center of the courtyard made my jaw tighten. She looked so small, her eyes darting between me and Valen as the workers guided her toward that ridiculous contraption. It was a cage made of thick, pulsating vines that looked like they had a life of their own. Below it was a pool filled with water so cold that frost was already forming on the stone rim.I felt a surge of fury. My wolf, Sage, was pacing in the back of my mind, his fur bristling. They shouldn't touch her, Sage growled. They shouldn't put her in danger for a show.Sage was always like this—logical, protective, and incredibly demanding of order. He didn't like chaos, and right now, my life was a mess of it. I was months away from being forced to marry a woman I didn't want, and suddenly, I had a mate who was an Omega and a rival King who claimed she was his too.“Control yourself, Darian,” I whispered to myself, smoothing out my shirt. We were led away from the sofas toward t
