Chapter 1

Author: Crystal K
Here I was, years after graduation, at an alumni party, listening to everyone gossip about my mate and his old flame.

The party was winding down. The air still buzzed with forced laughter and the scent of champagne.

I hid in the shadows of the balcony, listening to their whispers.

"Did you see Alpha Caspen's face when Victoria made that toast? The look in his eyes…"

"They were the perfect couple back then. A pureblood princess and the most powerful Alpha of their generation. A match made in heaven."

"Alpha Caspen hasn't gotten close to any she-wolf for years, except for pack business. I knew it. He was waiting for her!"

And me?

What was I? A consolation prize from the Fates?

I slipped away unnoticed and went back to the apartment we shared.

Late that night, Caspen came home, smelling of the cold and whiskey. He went straight to the shower.

Just then, the doorbell rang.

I opened it to a messenger in the Sterling family livery.

He shot me a condescending glance, handed over an exquisite wooden box, and left without a word.

My fingers trembled as I unlatched the lid.

A handkerchief lay inside.

The scent of irises hit me instantly. Victoria's signature.

Beneath the handkerchief was a card. The handwriting was bold and flamboyant.

"Cas, I'm back."

Cas.

My breath caught. It felt like an invisible hand had closed around my heart and squeezed.

Everyone in our pack—in the entire Alliance—called him Alpha Caspen. It was a sign of respect. A demand.

I was the only one allowed to call him "Caspen."

Only Victoria.

Only she dared to use that intimate nickname, to cross all his defenses so easily.

I crushed the card in my fist.

When I walked into the bedroom, Caspen was already in bed, asleep.

I slid under the covers, my body stiff.

A second later, his hot body pressed against mine.

Caspen's strong arms wrapped around my waist out of habit, pulling me tight against his chest.

This used to soothe my insecure soul.

But tonight, the scent of irises clinging to me filled the air.

Caspen didn't wake, but his breathing unconsciously grew heavier.

The mate mark on my neck burned, not with warmth, but with ice. A cold so deep it made me shudder.

He was holding me, but was his wolf responding to another woman's scent?

My face was pale. My gaze drifted over his broad shoulder to the half-open door of his study.

Moonlight fell on the personal safe in the corner.

The code was 1029.

Right after we were mated, I'd accidentally seen him enter it.

That was the day our mate bond had awakened.

I'd been so naive. I thought it was his clumsy way of being romantic.

I had secretly blushed, filled with a joy that lasted a whole year.

Until one day, while organizing the pack's most classified files, I saw Victoria's profile.

October 29th.

That was her birthday.

I stared at that impenetrable safe for a full two minutes.

My eyes ached, but I couldn't shed a single tear.

I hung my head, finally giving up on lying to myself.

Memories of the past shot through me like poison-tipped arrows.

I remembered the Blood Moon at the academy. The night Caspen first transformed into his Alpha form.

In front of the entire school, he'd torn the still-bloody Alpha fang from his own neck. Then, with a possessive grin, he'd hung it around Victoria's.

It was the symbol of his power. He let her wear it, a blatant display of his favor to the whole world.

And now?

Caspen never let me touch any of his personal things.

"Don't touch my desk."

"Stay out of my study."

Those cold warnings… I used to think he was just fiercely territorial.

No, he was just guarding his territory for someone else.

The smell of irises on the handkerchief wrapped around me like a snake, tightening its grip on my throat.

I lay awake all night.

I lay there, hopeless, and watched the darkness bleed into dawn.

Until dawn, when Caspen woke up.

I whipped my head around. Caspen's chiseled face was inches from mine."Just got here," he said, pulling the jacket tighter around my shoulders. He gestured back at the club. "You were practically glowing. Does the thought of breaking our bond really make you that happy?"There was a sour note in his voice.I was still reeling from his sudden appearance and answered without thinking, "Maybe."Caspen stopped dead in his tracks. He loomed over me, his eyes radiating the unquestionable authority of an Alpha."Alora, you can submit your request to the council. That's your right."He narrowed his silver eyes, his voice low and dangerous. "But as long as I refuse, I can drag this out for ten years. Twenty. A lifetime, if I have to."I stared at him in disbelief. "You're being completely unreasonable!""I'm the Alpha," he stated, as if that explained everything. "And I don't believe our relationship has reached a point where it needs to be broken."Before I could process that, he suddenly be

The banquet was held at a top-tier club near the academy.Victoria, of course, held court at the head of the table, basking in the fawning praise of her pack mates."Miss Sterling, why didn't Alpha Caspen come with you?" someone asked tentatively.Victoria elegantly swirled the red wine in her glass and sighed with a familiar, almost put-upon air."You know how it is. He's the Alpha of the Silvermoon Pack now, and a future contender for Alliance Chairman. There was an urgent Alliance meeting, so I told him to go ahead. Business first, after all."A wave of knowing, envious murmurs went through the crowd."Alpha Caspen is so devoted to you. He's even wearing the mate bracelet. Where's yours?"Victoria gave an awkward laugh and changed the subject.I sat at the far end of the long table, quietly watching the clumsy performance.Just three minutes earlier, a voice had suddenly broken into my mind."Where are you?"It was Caspen's mind link.I didn't reply. Instead, I raised my phone, took

On the morning of the gala.I had just walked out of the bedroom when I came face-to-face with Caspen, who was about to leave. He was dressed in a sharp, dark, tactical suit, looking tall and imposing. That face, the one that drove all the she-wolves crazy, was tense. My heart began to pound uncontrollably.Elder Lyra's words from last night echoed in my head."Cas—" I started, but only got out a single syllable.Caspen's pupils constricted. He spun around in an almost reflexive motion and slammed the front door behind him as if he were fleeing a disaster.I stood there, stunned, staring at the still-vibrating door. And then, I wanted to laugh. The great Alpha of Alphas… was running from me?What was he afraid of?Was he afraid I'd bring up breaking the bond again? For the first time, a sliver of confidence about our relationship bloomed in my chest.I went back to bed and for the first time in days, slept like the dead.I was woken by my phone vibrating non-stop.I opened Pack Net. The fake sympathy on Victoria's face froze. Her eyes widened slightly, as if she couldn't believe a low-tier Omega would dare to interrupt her.I picked up the cup of cold coffee in front of me, drained the last bitter drop, and stood up."You've said so much," I interrupted, standing. "You've tried to break me with stories from the past, painting me as a rebound, a tool for your revenge…"I stared directly into her eyes, which were now starting to burn with anger."All it proves is that you aren't confident you can win him back. In fact, you have no confidence at all.""That's not true!"Victoria shot to her feet. The sudden movement sent her silver spoon clattering against her porcelain saucer with a shrill noise.A few purebloods in the high-end cafe glanced over. She struggled to lower her voice, the cracks in her perfect mask beginning to show as she hastily defended herself."Caspen isn't mad at me anymore! When we were at the steakhouse, he—""That's your business."I didn't let

The day before the gala, at three in the afternoon. As I stood before the exclusive, purebloods-only café, I felt a flicker of hesitation.Victoria was sitting by the window.Sunlight streamed through her wavy, wine-red hair, bathing her in a golden halo. She was always like this, effortlessly exuding an elegance that could crush anyone. And me, in my faded coat, I felt like a servant who'd wandered into the queen's court."Alora, over here."She waved at me, a bright smile on her face.I took a deep breath and sat down across from her.She skipped the pleasantries and got straight to the point."I've always had excellent intuition," she began. "Even back at the academy, I noticed how you used to watch Caspen."That opening line ripped away the fragile veil of my carefully hidden insecurity.I looked at her flawless face and suddenly didn't want to pretend anymore."Yes, I admit it," I said, meeting her eyes. "At the academy, no one could help but look at him."Victoria seemed surprise

The Crestwood Academy Centennial Hunt was only three days away.Even though I had refused to participate, my name was still on the Silvermoon Pack's official attendance list. The Beta in charge of the event posted the final list of participants to the academy's group on Pack Net.I was just scrolling through it out of habit. But in less than a minute, a glaring comment shot to the top of the feed."Alora? What is she doing there? Isn't that the Omega who cheated on her Advancement Trials?"A flood of replies followed."Yes! That's her! The orphan who was desperate to climb the ladder!""So disgusting. Stealing other people's things to boost her own power. How is someone with a black mark like that on her record even allowed at the Centennial Hunt?""The Silvermoon Pack probably felt sorry for her and brought her along to do chores. It's not like Alpha Caspen would ever look twice at someone like her."I stared at the screen, the cold, vicious words stabbing at my oldest, most painful w
