LOGINMy mate offered almost no struggle, following me out quietly. My father’s words occupied my mind like weeds, too stubborn to die down, but the bond chased off the echo quickly.
We walked toward the edge of the grounds where the convoy of my pack was. In the harsh sunlight, the bruises that painted her trembling skin were even more evident, spiking an anger that felt foreign to me. I was almost tempted to return to the pack house to break the hand Alpha Mattias had used to strike her delicate face, but that would mean leaving her side. Her scent. It was even stronger than it had been in the hall, and that had been enough to drive me away from my father’s side to the corner where that alpha had been harassing her. Something had flared inside me then. A deep and possessive feeling that had cleared all logical reasoning. My wolf howled for me to save the omega girl dressed in rags instead of silk. “What is your name?” Her gaze snapped away from the ground to face me, distant like her mind had drifted. She hadn’t resisted my grip before, but in that moment she tried to pull away. Almost on instinct, my hand tightened around hers, thin and fragile. “Don’t run from me. If you do, I will chase you. And if I chase you, I will catch you.” Her blue eyes flickered, glassy and terrified. “Your name.” “Alexandra.” Her voice was so quiet, it nearly disappeared in the wind, already used to silence and submission. “You have a beautiful name. I apologize if I caused you distress, but they were going to harm you otherwise.” Perhaps that was the cause of distrust in her eyes, or maybe it was my father’s warning. The curse of the demon eye had skipped generations of our family, yet now I bore it, and she would bear it as well once claimed as my mate. “Do you fear me?” My feet came to a halt in front of the high inner gate of the pack. Her eyes widened as she shook her head, still avoiding my gaze, though I was desperate to meet hers. “I fear what I’ve heard about you, but I do not know you, Alpha, so I do not fear you.” My fingers found the base of her chin, tilting her head up until our eyes locked. “And what is it that you have heard about me?” She hesitated, drawing in a breath while struggling to hold my gaze. “Sometimes, on the nights I spent in the servants’ quarters, the older maids told stories about your pack.” “And what do they say, little mate?” She gasped when my hand yanked her closer, then wrapped around her waist to hold her against me. “They told me a story about your pack once. They said you possessed a gift that made you flourish for generations, and also a curse borne by the alpha. Your father also mentioned a curse.” “You will know the truth once we reach Ashclaw and I claim you as my mate.” My fingers shifted to cup her cheek. The bond demanded for me to take her right there, to make her mine, and it took sheer force of will to resist. “No one will ever harm you again, Alexandra. I swear it now under the sun, and I will do it again beneath the moon so the goddess will be my witness.” Her blue eyes glistened, then she raised her arms, wrapping them around me and burying her head in the crook of my neck. “I’ll try my best as your mate, but I know nothing about being a luna. I am not fit for the role, Alpha.” “Marcus.” My teeth ached from how hard they were clenched. Whatever she needed to know she would learn, and the first thing was that she addressed me as an equal, not a master. “You can call me Marcus.” Footsteps approached, and I turned immediately, pulling away from Alexandra while shoving her behind me protectively. My father approached, clearly displeased. Alexandra shrank behind me, gripping my arm tight. “Marcus, we need to talk.” “There is nothing more to discuss.” Our eyes locked, a silent threat floating between us. “I assume we are no longer welcome to this pack after the incident that just occurred. My mate will go to gather her belongings, and then we can be on our way.” He pressed two fingers to his temple, staring at Alexandra, who was peeking from her hiding place behind me. If it wasn’t so heartbreaking, her skittish attitude was almost cute. “You are right. I doubt we will have reason to set foot in the Moonridge Pack again.” His gaze shifted back to me. “That stunt you pulled inside is already starting to stir up people’s interest. The other packs will truly begin to suspect if the rumors are actually true. You couldn’t kill him without using the demon’s eye to mess with the weather?” “I lost control of it for a second. The rumors about me will all die down soon enough. It always does.” I turned away from him to Alexandra, whose eyes were darting between us, clearly confused. “We’re going to get your things, then we ride home.” “Does she even know what you’re about to push her into? The responsibility she’s obviously not trained for will weigh her down and crush her.” My father’s fingers curled into fists, though they did not threaten me. Alexandra was coming back to Ashclaw, and there was nothing my father or anyone else could do to stop it. She tugged at the sleeve of my black shirt gently, staring up at me with soft blue eyes that might have been able to get me to do anything. I didn’t understand what she wanted immediately, but then she pointed toward the direction of the pack house, her short nails digging into my arm. Her voice sounded louder compared to the delicate whisper from before. The only thing similar between the two tones was that they were both laced with fear when she spoke. “They’re coming.”Something went wrong the moment his arms wrapped around me.His skin burned against mine. Not in a calm, savoury way that matched the feel of the bond.It burned. My hands pressed against his broad, hard chest, attempting to push him off. "Marcus..."He gave no response as his fingers ran through my hair before shoving the strands off my neck.Even before his teeth grazed my bared neck, it was clear what was to follow, yet something in me fought it off.The man on top of me now couldn't be the same mate that had brought me to this room. "Marcus, you're hurting me."That seemed to awaken something inside him. He pulled away, blinking rapidly like someone who just woke from a dream. "Alexandra?""It's me. Just me." Despite my efforts to sound calm, there was still an edge of caution laced into each word.He nodded, hesitating before pushing himself off the bed. "I should leave you to get settled then. You can bring your clothes in, I already made space in the closet.""But we haven't...
"You feel it too?"Alexandra's head snapped up to face me, nearly losing her balance if not for the white cloth still holding us together. "The bond. You can feel it?"She nodded slowly, dropping her gaze back to the knot tied over our hands."We can take it off once we get to my chambers. Once we consummate, it should be easier to tame. The bond, I mean." My throat felt dry and the wound on my palm stung where the skin had split. But that was almost completely irrelevant. She had stayed. After what she'd seen last night, it wouldn't have surprised me if I'd stood at that altar for the rest of the night and walked away by dawn without a mate. That was enough for a reason for me to pledge myself to her. "Consummate?" She whispered, eyes widening. It dawned on me then that since she was so clueless about everything about a mating ceremony, she wouldn't know what it meant to consummate one either."It's the final step to seal the bond. It's supposed to feel good and I promise to be gen
"Wait...did you see...?" I turned around, swirling the dress along with me. Haelenya glanced around the room before settling her gaze back on me. "See who?" "Irina. My...maid." The last word still felt odd on my tongue. It was one thing to let her serve me, but entirely different to acknowledge the fact that someone was readily attending to all my needs. "I didn't even know a maid had been assigned to you." She shrugged, scanning the room nervously once more before focusing on me. "It's time. Let's not keep your mate waiting." Something stirred inside me, deeper than anticipation. My heart squeezed in a way that actually made me feel happy. Was this what Irina had meant? I'd never want to be away from him. Support him even when he did wrong. Haelenya led me to what I assumed was the throne room. The large stone doors were shut, though a red carpet had been laid out at the center of the hallway. She walked forward, knocking on the door lightly. Seconds later, it was pulled open,
The girl, Haelenya, kept smiling. Irina glanced up at me, her silver hair falling into her face to mask it. “I will leave you two alone to speak. Call me if you need anything, my lady.” Before I could plead with her to stay, Irina darted out of the room, bowing lowly to the blonde before leaving, still hiding her face. “How odd.” Haelenya turned back to me, beaming like my presence didn't rob her of her chance of being luna. “I'm sorry for barging in so suddenly. Marcus wouldn't let me go anywhere until I checked on you.” “Checked on me?” “Yes, he could sense you were awake. And since he's not allowed to come to you, I'm here to do just that.” She seemed overjoyed to do so, not at all bothered by what I might've unknowingly stolen from her. “You seem so confused.” She laughed, pressing a hand to her chest. “I'm Haelenya. Basically your new sister-in-law considering Marcus is like a brother to me.” “I... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to intrude on your lives. Last night just happened
Everything happened in a blur. The guards surrounded Alpha Damarus, prepared to protect their Alpha, then they all dropped to the floor, shaking violently."Marcus, control yourself. This is not the time for you to lose your senses." For the first time since I'd met him, Alpha Damarus's voice wavered, like even he was afraid of Marcus. My eyes shifted from the soldiers collapsed on the floor to my mate, approaching his father with dead eyes.Whatever curse it was Marcus had must have been the reason for all his extraordinary abilities, messing with the weather, killing people so easily, and bringing so many warriors to their knees without doing anything. But all that had come with a price, and it seemed Marcus was still paying it.I scooted forward on my hands and knees, the towel wrapped around my body nearly falling off. "Alpha. Marcus, it's me."Marcus stopped, tilting his head towards me and growling."It's Alexandra."Before another word could leave my lips, he growled again, onl
Marcus howled again. It was so loud that the sound pierced through the heavy stone door that separated us. The base of my back ached from how hard he had shoved me against the wall, but the pain faded into the back of my mind as a small voice in my head urged me forward. It pressed insistently, fighting my instinct to run and hide away from whatever was behind that door. Marcus had changed, shifted into someone I was not certain was still my mate. He howled again, this time no longer human. He must have shifted into his wolf. The thought of that almost broke my resolve further, but something in me kept pushing. It took me a moment to realise it was my wolf. After lying dormant for years, all it could do was push me toward my possible death at the hands of my mate. My hands wrapped around the handle of the door as I sucked in a breath, pushing it open before my mind caught up with how stupid this decision was. The room was dark, completely pitch black. The only form of light wa
