I shifted uncomfortably in my seat as all eyes fell on me, wincing as a shard of wood dug into my ass. I guess Asher must have broken something when I hurled him into it earlier in an effort to prevent him from destroying my mate's living room. 

I was damn glad she wasn't here now, but I also wasn't touching Jax's last statement with a ten-foot pole. 

I cleared my throat and launched right into the heart of the matter, "I spent the last several hours scouring the forest between town and the training grounds, but I wasn't able to find where he disappeared to. What are we going to do about the dance?"

I knew bringing up the missing elder would get Jax to recenter his concentration, and the open-ended question would buy me time to come up with an excuse in case he circled back later.
