RILEY'S POV

Prince Norman took his seat at the head of the long conference table flanked by gruff faces of young and elderly noblemen.

Mr. Chadwick pointed me to a seat in the middle of the table before he exited the conference room. The occupants of the conference room regarded me momentarily before they glued their gazes to the Prince.

This was it.

The meeting began, all I could hear remained what everyone else in the room heard, no matter how hard I listened, stared, and prayed to the goddess to save me this one last time, I heard nothing out of the ordinary.

Thirty minutes into the meeting, the notepad before me was still as blank as my mind, fifteen more minutes before this meeting was over. The goddess chose to ignore me. As always.

My gaze wandered to Prince Norman, his attention too vested in the white-haired man's words to want to pay any glance my way.

In no time, Prince Norman got to his feet. The meeting ended. My breath ceased. The blank notepad was a subtle reminder that my end was now. Handshakes were made, Chadwick plunged into the room to gather Norman's computer and phone. He glanced my way and nodded me to the door.

Time to leave.

My heart pounding loudly in my ears was all I heard now as I followed them to the door, into the elevator, and back to the waiting car.

His security measures left no room for escape.

Prince Norman was on his phone all through the ride from the business complex through the bustling streets and then a stop at the prison. His eyes dropped on me the second his call ended.

"You're going to work with Detective Jones this noon," he paused, only to stretch his large hand towards the notepad I'd hugged to my chest all through the ride.

Sweat broke through my forehead, I shook my head without a word.

"I didn't," I swallowed hard and scanned my brain for a more appealing way to break the news to him, "I'm dyslexic."

The lie left my mouth before I had the chance to think of its consequences.

Norman didn't bear expressive features, exactly what sent me off the edge.

"What the fuck, that's a joke." Mr. Chadwick looked back at me from the front seat where he sat.

Tears brimmed in my eyes. I bucked up, crying wasn't going to solve this.

"What the hell am I thinking girl?" Mr. Chadwick prodded.

"That's enough," Norman muttered, turning his cold eyes on me he continued, "Do you know the depth of what you've just done?"

Did I?

I glanced at Mr. Chadwick as though seeking help to escape the fury burning bright in Prince Norman's eyes.

Mr. Chadwick low-key shook his head. So I shook my head without a word.

"You do remember everyone in that meeting right?" He asked, quite mildly.

Mr. Chadwick nodded. I nodded. He was a kind man.

"Mr Gilbert Sanchez, do you remember his thoughts on the bid?"

Norman's sensuous lips were all I'd focused on all through the meeting, none of those men in the room were of importance to me, not until now.

"The man with the gray hat and tie." Chadwick enlightened me.

I could lie now. I could say he was interested and thought of committing until the long run.

But that would be pouring more fuel into the fire. If Norman made a business mistake then, I'd certainly get punished in a few days.

"His mind was hazy. He bore no thoughts." I spluttered.

"That fuckin' can't be!" Norman's voice rose.

His rage evident in his tone which made me flinch fearfully.

"Pardon your Majesty, the girl's in shock. I feel like she needs a few more days to rest and understand exactly why she's here." Mr. Chadwick came to my rescue.

I nodded desperately, blinking away the tears in my eyes. "I'm scared." I allowed my tears to flow.

Silence dominated the car before Norman broke it with his deep voice.

"Cancel the interrogation with the spies, push it back another week, and reschedule for another meeting. I need to be sure of this deal, Chadwick."

The car started out of the prison gate. It wasn't until then that my lungs were able to function again. For the first time noticing just how beautiful the scenery was as the car drove through the city.

True to the tales, this was a wealthy land. The cars, tall buildings, and roads were nothing compared to the HornSide pack. The car came to a halt outside the opulent mansion.

Chadwick sprang out to hold the door open for Norman. For us.

"Show Miss Cooper to her room."

Her room?

A smile twitched on my lips at the thought of living here. I'd never lived anywhere this grand. I only scrubbed the floors and tended the garden in such buildings.

"Thanks, Norman!" The joy in my soul went beyond what they could suspect.

Norman's peered gaze watched me as though I just made a mistake. Did I?

Mr. Chadwick cleared his throat audibly and clarified, "Prince Norman. She meant to say, ‘Prince’!" He cast me a warning glare before he turned to offer Norman a stiff bow.

Mr. Chadwick lectured me on how things went around the mansion as he led me to the other wing of the mansion away from the one Prince Norman had disappeared into.

"Is he always that soft?" I smiled, flattered just to think about how softly he'd spoken to me earlier.

"There are adjectives you don't use while describing the Prince. Be wary of such words in the future." He stopped by the door. "I'm an executive assistant, I don't understand why, His Majesty wants me to babysit you."

"Point me to an escape route and I promise never to come back."

He regarded me as though I had lost my mind and held the door open waiting until I'd gotten inside before he closed the door.

This entirely was my reality from now on. From now until the Prince learned he'd been tricked.

NORMAN'S POV"She is wolfless," Dr. Walker, an exceptional Pack doctor, handed the results of the tests carried on Riley to me. Now, that explains it. My wolf had the feeling something was off about this listener. "Was she able to perform her first tasks?" Dr. Walker tossed the pen in his hand on his desk, waiting for my reply. "I don't think so." Chadwick imagined it was from stress but I knew otherwise. "Her DNA is a match to that of Goro Wyel, the most gifted Listener the Lycan territories could ever have, she's from the bloodline but not everyone in this bloodline has that gift. She's clearly one of them."Riley wasn't the last and only surviving from this tribe. I had gone through a whole lot to find her just to realize she was point-blank useless to me. I just didn't know how to deal with disappointments. "I send her back to her people?" In a body bag. "We can induce her. There's a fifty-fifty chance of whipping something out.""How long is that going to take?""Eight mon

RILEY'S POVPrince Norman Edelman my fated mate? Or should I say, second chance mate? How was it possible? His proximity knocked out every breath in me. His words had the worst effect on me. I gaped at the man towering before me in the plush bedroom he offered me to stay. My destiny couldn't get any messier. Any funnier. I dared not laugh. This man wasn't the type to appreciate humor. Definitely not the type to settle for a wolfless girl. If Alpha Nate could reject me then this great Lycan Prince certainly won't miss a beat. Maybe my destiny was to pine away all alone like the rest of the Wyels without gifts. I shook my head at his last question. Never in the world would I have imagined this breathtaking Prince was my second chance mate. The mate bond was hard to recognize, his scent, hard to tell. It would've been different if I had a wolf. The same vagueness when Alpha Nate popped out of nowhere to declare himself my mate seized my mind as I remained transfixed before Norman. Hi

Riley's POVHearing Damon's request sent a jolt through me. I became instantly dumbfounded staring at everyone. Yet, my eyes captured nothing.I felt like I was stuck in some kind of crazy dream. One minute, I was standing in front of Norman, listening to him declare that I was his mate, and the next, Damon was talking openly about marrying me as his mate.“No way in hell that's happening!” A feminine voice growled, stomping into the room. “You plan to abandon me because of this thing?”I shot up my brow in confusion. Was I being referred to as a thing now?“Meredith?” Damon's eyes shot up inquisitively, “What are you doing here?”“What's going on here?” Mr. Chadwick's loud voice captured everyone's attention.Norman cleared his throat, “She's Meredith Cox, Damon's girlfriend and lover.”I didn't know how to feel about the news. Part of me was drawn to Norman's possessiveness, but another part of me was intrigued by Damon's raw, wild energy. And now, with Damon's girlfriend, Meredith

The nobles around me were all chatting and laughing, but I couldn't help feeling like an outsider.Meredith, Damon's girlfriend, was sitting across from me, her eyes fixed on me with a mixture of disdain and amusement. She didn't miss a beat to openly taunt me about not fitting in."You're really something, aren't you?" she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I mean, who would have thought that a little runt like you would be sitting at the same table as us?"I felt my face heat up with embarrassment, but I tried to keep my cool. I knew that Meredith was just trying to get under my skin. And I wouldn't allow her to have that advantage over me, dealing with her kind of person wasn't new to me.The triplets got up to speak privately to Mr. Crestwood, and Meredith's demeanor changed. She leaned in close to me, her voice taking on a menacing tone."Listen, runt," she said. "I don't know what kind of game y

Riley's POVOne month later…I stood beside Norman, my heart racing with excitement and a hint of nervousness. We were standing in a beautiful garden, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant flowers. The crescent moon hung low in the sky, casting a silver glow on the two of us.“What are we doing here?” I asked, looking around.“We are here to become one?” He answered, his eyes focused on me.“Become one?” I inquired, a frown creasing my brows.“Yes, I'm willing to break our law to see that happen.”“What law are you talking about?” I asked, not understanding his statement.“I will tell you later, but for now…” he answered, then his voice trailed off.Was he suddenly nervous? I shook my head. That can't be the case. A powerful man like Norman would never be nervous in front of a runt like me.I was still thinking when I felt him took my hand, his eyes locking on mine. Norman's POVAs I stepped out of the palace hall, the weight of my conversation with my father still lingered in my chest. His words weren’t harsh, but they held something heavier than scolding—expectation. He didn’t care about Riley’s past, her bloodline, or the court’s noise. All he wanted to know was if I truly wanted her… and if I was ready to face everything that would come with choosing her.I had answered him without hesitation. Yes. Every single time, it was a yes. And to think he had only laughed when I told him about Damon and Kirk also having eyes for Riley totally irks me. I knew he must have heard about the issue but I still deemed it reasonable telling him, but he only laughed it off. But knowing him, he'd still think about the whole issue sometimes later—when alone. He wasn't foolish, far from it. He was the wisest person I've ever known, that was the way he had kept the kingdom together.I walked down the palace steps with a quiet hope that Riley was still by the garde

Riley's POVThe palace was even grander than I had thought it to be. Towering walls, shining marble floors, and the heavy scent of roses from the garden made my stomach twist. I was used to quiet corners and wooden floors, not gold trimmings and guards in static motion. As the car passed through the front gates, I felt the nervous flutter I always tried to hide.I sat beside Norman in the car, pretending to be calm. He looked so sure of himself, like always—shoulders straight, eyes steady, lips set in that quiet line he wore when he was deep in thought. I admired him so much, maybe too much. He belonged here. This world was his. But me? Sometimes I wasn’t so sure."You’re quiet," he said, turning to look at me."I’m just thinking." I gave him a small smile, hoping it would pass as enough. He reached for my hand, holding it gently. "You don’t have to come in if you don’t want to. I can handle my father."I shook my head quickly. "No, I want to come. I just... maybe I’ll stay in the gar

Norman's POVThe ride back to the mansion felt like an eternity. My hand, still clenched from the confrontation, throbbed dully. I could still hear the venom in Elder Thomas’s voice, the way he spat out the word “slave” like a curse. Slave. The very thought made my stomach churn. Riley, my own wife, the woman I've come to love, subjected to such blatant disrespect. A wave of fury, cold and sharp, washed over me.I snuck a glance at her. She sat beside me, her gaze fixed on the passing buildings, pale and bearing no expression. She seemed composed, but I knew her well enough to see the tight set of her jaw, the slight tremor in her hands. I wanted to reach for her, to pull her close, to offer some comfort, but I hesitated. My outburst at the court… had it been the right thing to do? I’d defended her, yes, but had I made things worse? Had I painted a target on her back? The guilt gnawed at me. I should have been there. I should have anticipated their hostility, their prejudice. I shou

Riley’s POVI had just gotten summoned by the court. The summons had arrived just after breakfast, a crisp white envelope bearing the court’s official seal. My stomach had churned as I read the formal, almost chillingly polite, request for my presence. I knew this was coming. Norman had taken the step to let our marriage go public, just before he went for a quick journey with Chadwick. I could also understand one thing, Norman’s sudden announcement of our marriage had sent ripples of shock through the kingdom, and I knew the court wouldn’t take it lying down. Now, I was on my way to the court as it was close to the time stipulated in the letter. Norman wasn't around to escort me. He had left for an important meeting yesterday noon and wouldn't be coming back until later today. Although I wasn't bothered about his absence, I would face the men of the court and try to be knowledgeable in my dealings with them. After walking a while, I entered the grand hall, my heart hammering against

Riley’s POVA soft knock on my door pulled me from my thoughts. I’d been sketching, trying to capture the way the afternoon light slanted through the windows, painting the room in shades of gold and amber. I opened the door to find Norman standing there, his jaw tight, his fists clenched at his sides. Even without him saying a word, I knew something was wrong. The air around him crackled with tension.“Norman? What is it?” I asked, my voice laced with concern. He forced a smile, a pale contrast of his usual impassive expression. “Nothing. Just came back from the court. I didn't see you in my chamber so I thought you'd be here.”I raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. He paced the room restlessly, his silence more telling than any words could have been. My heart sank. His visit to the court hadn’t gone well. I knew it. I had known he wouldn't have it easy, that he'd face resistance — resistance he’d face from those who clung to tradition, to the old ways. He’d brushed off my concerns, confid

Norman’s POVBy the time I get back to my suite, I couldn't find Riley anywhere around. I understand immediately she must have gone back to her room. I still needed to see her so I stepped out of my room, my mind reeling with the discussion I had with the court. I closed the door gently behind me, and immediately set out to go to Riley's part of the huge pack house.I hadn't taken two steps when Damon suddenly appeared before me, his presence as sudden and unexpected as a storm cloud on a clear day. His face was like a thundercloud, his eyes blazing with a cold fury that would have affected any other person, but not me. "You," he growled, pointing at me. I didn't fail to notice the accusation that rang deep in his voice. "Why would you do this? Why would you marry my mate?"His words struck me as both absurd and amusing. His mate? What the hell was he talking about? Riley was no one's possession, a fact I was about to make abundantly clear. A chuckle escaped my lips, a sound that see

Riley’s POVMy hand trembled slightly as I pushed open the door to my room, my mind still replaying the unsettling conversation with Meredith. I’d expected the quiet solitude of my own space, a place to gather my thoughts and steel myself for whatever lay ahead. Instead, I found Damon. He stood by the door, his back to me, his posture—somewhat rigid, his very presence brought a feeling of unease inside of me. Surprise morphed into confusion, then a prickle of fear. I didn't know why, but my heart seem to beat faster seeing him standing here. What was he doing here? I swallowed a spittle then opened my mouth, "Damon?" I called, my voice hesitant. "What… what are you doing here?"He turned, his gaze meeting mine, and the breath caught in my throat. His eyes, usually warm and teasing, were now cold and sharp, like shards of ice. He didn’t answer, instead, he just continued to stare at me, his silence more unnerving than any angry outburst. He took a step towards me, and another, and the

Riley's POVI walked out of Norman's suite, my mind preoccupied with the court's decision. I needed to change clothes and get some other things done, but my thoughts were stuck on Norman and the possibility of him sending me back to Hornside. Even when he had promised he'd never do something like that, I couldn't help but think of the possibility of that happening. I let the thoughts off my head as I walked down the hallway, I thought about my wolf awakening and wondered if there's a slight chance of using my ability as a listener to help Norman. Maybe, just maybe, I could find a way to make things right. But before I could get lost in my thoughts further, I stumbled upon a wall that pushed me back slightly. I looked up to see Meredith's cold face glaring at me, her eyes flashing with anger. I felt a surge of annoyance, but I didn't let it get the better of me."I can see you suddenly became blind," Meredith sneered, her voice dripping with hatred as she marched closer to me. "Tell m

Norman's POVI stood before the round table of the court, my eyes fixed on Mr. Crestwood and the other kingmakers. They were the ones who would decide my fate, determine whether I would be allowed to pursue the throne. And now, they were telling me that my marriage to Riley was a problem."Norman, you have committed a great atrocity by marrying a girl under the crescent moon," one of the kingmakers said, his voice stern. "You must send her back to Hornside and marry another, hence that will void your first marriage."I felt my heart kick in anger at their words. How could they ask me to abandon Riley, the woman I had come to care for? I thought about her innocent smile, her laughter, and her determination—everything that endeared me to her. I couldn't possibly come to terms with leaving her, not because these men here want it that way."I understand that I may have broken the Moonclak law," I begin, trying to keep my tone calm.
