Damien’s povI looked up at the skies to see the moon going high and high in the skies as I walked about with my hands in my pockets.I loved how quiet and peaceful it felt in the garden at this time; there were barely any moments during which I could think without being interrupted. But tonight felt different.I saw something from within my peripheral vision: a swift movement, a darting across the very edge of sight that belonged to nothing else but a shadow. I turned around then and watched him go as he disappeared into the dark shadow of the trees. He walked with square shoulders and a quick confidence. When he was gone I looked back at the fire for a while.The smell of cooking meat was chokingly thick, the heat driving me to stand up and back a step, but it fueled my thoughts and plans and strategies. Salvatore was glad, and that was fine. It kept everyone’s eyes off me, kept him using me instead. But I hadn’t forgotten why I’d come at all. Not for him.
