Chapter 3

Author: Marvelous Meow
By the time I reached my father's studio with the clearance notice in hand, the movers had already forced the door open.

"Stop right there."

The foreman glanced at the project manager Cyrus had sent. "Mr. Lane said everything has to be cleared out today, Ms. Spencer. Please don't make our job difficult."

I blocked the doorway. "The plans and models inside are private property. If anyone touches them, I'm calling the police."

Quinn stepped out of a car, carrying the glass jar that had held our stars.

"Zara, I already told them not to clear anything out yet."

My eyes went straight to the jar in her arms. "Why do you have that?"

"Cyrus stayed with me last night. He brought it over with him." She ran her fingers over the glass with a gentle smile. "Those notes were meant for me in the first place. He said leaving them with you would only give you the wrong idea."

I held out my hand. "Give me the jar."

Quinn didn't move.

"You've had him for five years, Zara. Can't you at least give me back the memories that were mine?"

"My father made that jar for me by hand. This has nothing to do with the notes inside."

Her arms tightened around it, tears welling in her eyes. "But Cyrus gave it to me."

"Quinn."

Cyrus's voice came from behind me.

He walked over to her and immediately draped his scarf around her shoulders.

"It's windy. Wait in the car."

I stared at him. "You know exactly who made that jar."

"I'll have someone make you an identical one."

"My dad only ever made one for me."

Cyrus was silent for a moment before his voice softened.

"Quinn likes it. Let her keep it for a few days."

A few days.

There it was again.

Just like Quinn's name was only "temporarily" on my project. Our anniversary could always be celebrated later. And every stormy night, my husband was only "temporarily" leaving me to be with her.

As Quinn headed back toward the car, her foot caught on a cable.

The jar slipped from her arms.

I lunged for it without thinking, but Cyrus was faster. He pulled Quinn into his arms and shielded her instead.

The jar hit the concrete.

The crack of shattering glass made my ears ring as paper stars and shards scattered across the ground.

Quinn went pale. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to."

I crouched down and reached for the piece from the bottom of the jar with the character from my name etched into it.

Before I could touch it, Cyrus's dress shoe came down on the glass.

"Don't. You'll cut yourself."

"Move your foot."

"The crew can clean it up."

"Cyrus, move your foot."

Frowning, he stepped back.

The glass beneath his shoe had already been crushed into smaller fragments.

I reached for what remained, and a shard sliced my fingertip.

Cyrus caught my hand.

"You're really going to hurt yourself over a broken jar?"

"You're right. It's just a broken jar." I pulled my hand away. "So of course you don't remember my dad sitting beside the kiln when he was dying, carving my name into it one stroke at a time."

Cyrus froze.

Quinn sniffled softly. "This is all my fault. If Zara's really that upset, I can give the project back to her too."

"You don't need to give me anything back."

I stood and tore the clearance notice in half.

"I'm taking the project back myself."

Cyrus stepped in front of me.

"You need to attend this afternoon's contract signing as Quinn's project consultant."

"You want to use my plans, keep her name on the project, and have me answer the investors' questions for her?"

"It's one meeting." He lowered his voice. "She just came back from overseas. She needs this opportunity. You already have me. You don't have to compete with her for everything."

A dull ache suddenly spread through my lower abdomen.

I grabbed the doorframe as cold sweat broke out across my forehead.

Cyrus reached toward me, but a few feet away, Quinn suddenly clutched her chest and gasped that she couldn't breathe.

His hand stopped.

Then he walked straight past me, scooped Quinn into his arms, and carried her to the car.

Before closing the door, he turned to the project manager.

"Take my wife to the signing. Don't let her leave before it's over."

I pulled out my phone and saw a reminder from the hospital about my follow-up appointment.

My doctor had warned me just yesterday that there was bleeding around the gestational sac and that I needed strict bed rest.

I called Cyrus.

He answered almost immediately.

"Quinn isn't feeling well. I'm taking her to the hospital."

"I need to go to the hospital too."

"Your stomach's just acting up. You can go after the signing."

"What if it isn't my stomach?"

Silence.

Then Quinn's labored breathing came through the phone. Cyrus murmured a few words to calm her before speaking to me again.

"Zara, this isn't the time to turn this into a competition over who needs me more."

He hung up.

The project manager opened the car door for me.

"Mrs. Lane, Mr. Lane said you're going to that signing today, even if we have to carry you there."

I looked down.

A bright red drop of blood was making its way down the hem of my dress.

A year later, the Greenwood Theater reopened. My father's dome mural had been fully restored, and tickets for the opening performance sold out a month in advance. Hayden placed the very first ticket on my desk."Front row, dead center. Your father's favorite seat."I ran my thumb over the sycamore leaf printed on the ticket."What about the seat next to it?""Empty."I'd saved that one for my father. Before the performance began, Henry brought me the final divorce decree along with the last enforcement report. Quinn Xavier had been convicted of commercial fraud and embezzlement, and all the property in her name had been put toward restitution. Cyrus had sold most of his shares, covered the remaining losses on the project, and resigned from the company.By the time the performance ended, it was raining outside.Hayden opened his umbrella. "The car's parked pretty far away. Want to wait until it lets up?""Let's walk."We had barely made it down the steps when I spotted Cyrus across th

By the time the board finished voting, Cyrus had been suspended from all of his positions. He made no attempt to argue. Instead, he gathered the Greenwood Theater files and handed them over to me.Henry flipped through the accounts, stopping after a couple of pages. "There are three irregular expenses here. Quinn requested all three under the overseas team's name. Together, they're worth more than twenty million, and you approved them.""I did," Cyrus said calmly. "She told me the money was urgent, and I signed off without checking.""That makes you jointly liable for the losses.""I know."I closed the file. "Is there anything else?"For a moment, Cyrus simply looked at me. Then he took out the divorce agreement, already signed. His name now appeared beside mine on the final page."The house, the shares, the money in our accounts. I want you to have all of it.""We'll divide everything according to the prenup.""Zara, I owe you.""You can't put a price on our baby."The color drained

Before work began on the Greenwood Theater, Quinn told the media that the restoration plan had been her original concept.Less than half an hour after the interview went live, she released an old notebook as proof."This was the first draft I developed while I was studying abroad."A reporter brought the notebook over to me."Ms. Spencer, Ms. Xavier claims you used your marriage to take credit for her work. How do you respond?"I flipped to the last page."This notebook belonged to my father."Quinn immediately shot back, "There's no name on it. What makes you so sure?""The paper has a watermark in the bottom right corner made from an old Greenwood Theater ticket stub. My father had that paper custom-made. No one else had it."Her expression changed.I placed the forensic report on the table."The handwriting analysis shows that the first half was written twelve years ago. The second half was added sometime within the last three months."I looked at Quinn."You copied my father's hand

On the day the Greenwood Theater project went back out to bid, Cyrus sat in the center of the review panel. When I entered the conference room, he instinctively stood and pulled out a chair for me."You're still recovering. You could've joined remotely.""Thank you for your concern, Mr. Lane."I took the seat beside Hayden."But I'm leading one of the bidding teams today. I thought it was better to be here in person."Mr. Lane. His hand stayed frozen on the back of the chair for several seconds when he heard that.Quinn walked in carrying the original proposal, her expression strained."Zara, you revoked the license. Everything the company invested in the early stages is gone.""That's the price of using someone else's work without permission.""But Cyrus already apologized to you."I opened the folder in front of me. "My personal life isn't part of today's discussion."Quinn bit her lip."You can hate me all you want, but you can't jeopardize hundreds of people's jobs just because you

In the end, Cyrus still managed to find out which hospital I'd been transferred to.Two hours later, my hospital room door flew open. I was already dressed and ready to leave when he rushed in. His eyes went straight past Henry and landed on my face."Zara."He started toward me, then stopped at the foot of the bed."Did we really lose the baby?"I kept my eyes on the discharge papers and finished signing my name. When Cyrus noticed the medication on the bedside table, his hands began to shake."Why didn't you tell me where you were?"Henry stepped between us. "Mr. Lane, please keep your distance.""This is between my wife and me.""Ms. Spencer has retained me to handle her divorce."Cyrus's expression hardened. "Get out."I capped my pen and handed the paperwork to the nurse. "You're the one who should leave."The color drained from his face."Zara, I know you blame me.""I'm not blaming you." I looked at him. "I just don't want you anymore."He reached for my coat as though nothing b

Ten minutes later, the divorce papers and the formal notice revoking the copyright license for the Greenwood Theater project landed in Cyrus's inbox at the same time.I silenced my phone and ignored every message he sent. When Henry Zane arrived at my hospital room, he brought the full inventory of copyrights belonging to my father's studio."The notices have been sent. The company's legal department received copies too.""Good.""The moment the license is revoked, the Greenwood Theater project comes to a complete stop.""Then let it stop."Henry glanced at the medication on my bedside table."Does Cyrus know about the baby?""No."I handed him my phone."From now on, you take his calls."Once the paperwork was finished, Henry arranged for me to be transferred to another hospital. That afternoon, the Greenwood Theater project formally received notice that its copyright authorization had been terminated. The company's legal department contacted Cyrus immediately.By the time he arrived
