Chapter 2

作者: Lune Glow
Daniel's eyes never left Sienna's trembling shoulders.

He didn't notice the blood pouring from the web of my thumb, split open by the bullet.

My voice sounded terrifyingly cold as I said, "Don't bother. Nobody's forcing you to play the husband sneaking around with his sister-in-law. Daniel, we're done."

Daniel froze, silently turning those two words over in his mind for a long moment.

After all, when we nearly died together in a kidnapper's van years ago, I never once abandoned him.

Just as he hesitated and reached out to touch my face, Sienna burst into laughter. "You want to break up with Daniel? Who are you kidding, Charlotte? You've got nowhere else to go. You're just playing hard to get and using that old life-saving favor to keep Daniel chained to you!"

Daniel's gaze instantly turned to ice. He hated being threatened more than anything.

"Everyone says the only thing we sisters share is our dimples," Sienna purred. "Why don't we carve yours out? That way, Daniel will never confuse us again."

When Daniel hesitated, Sienna immediately clutched her stomach. "It hurts so much. I've never been attacked like this in my life. And we didn't use protection earlier. What if she hurt our baby?"

Daniel gave her a helpless look and finally nodded.

The bodyguards pinned my arms behind my back. My eyes widened in pure disbelief.

Before I could speak, Daniel cut me off with an airy dismissal. "Charlotte, you always hated those dimples anyway. Lowe Cosmetic's technology is top-notch. Don't worry. It won't scar."

The blade pressed against both sides of my cheeks, and unbearable pain exploded at once.

The guards belonged to Sienna. They maliciously twisted the blades in my flesh.

Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.

I used to despise every feature I shared with Sienna.

On my 18th birthday, I had waited anxiously for Daniel to celebrate my coming of age, but my call to his phone never went through.

When I stumbled back to our cramped hideout, heartbroken, I saw two bodies tangled on that narrow bed.

At that moment, a deafening ringing filled my ears. My hands shook as I leaned against the wall and threw up until nothing was left.

Daniel had knelt before me, grabbing my hands and swearing he was drunk and that he'd mistaken Sienna for me.

I sobbed uncontrollably, repeatedly demanding an explanation. Just why?

When I was 13, bruised and battered, Daniel had kicked away the thug following me without a second thought.

When I was 15, he was on the run and couldn't even afford decent clothes, yet he had skipped meals to save up for the necklace I'd glanced at in a shop window.

On my 17th birthday, hiding under the covers, I had asked into the phone, "Are you crying? I said I have feelings for you, and you're crying?"

His voice crackled back, choked with emotion. "I haven't even gotten you flowers or told you how I feel properly. How could I let you say it first?"

I told him he'd given me plenty of flowers.

He refused, saying that the confession bouquet was special. It meant something different.

But then came the second mistake, the third…

By the tenth time, Sienna yanked off the blanket and held her chest high as she mocked, "How could you mistake me every single time? Even if you got it wrong, couldn't you feel the difference? Charlotte's built like a stick. Deep down, you want me!"

And Daniel just stood there in silence, not offering a single word of denial.

With two bloody holes carved into my face, I was dumped on the floor like a ruined rag doll as the crowd dispersed.

The engagement party I had anticipated for six months was completely destroyed.

Blood rapidly stained his white shirt red.As he looked at me, his eyes were clearer and filled with more remorse than ever before."I'm… sorry…"He reached out his hand, as if trying to grasp something. Daniel choked out, "Those men in black suits… barged into our home…"He clutched my hand, breathing heavily, as though he had suddenly been dragged back into that nightmare."They whipped you and your mom! 99 full lashes! They demanded to know where I was… You were covered in blood, yet you didn't say a single word…"His body hunched over in agony, and his shoulders trembled violently. "After Sienna tricked me into bed, I felt so disgusted that I wanted to die. She pretended to feel guilty, apologized, and recommended a psychiatrist to me."That doctor hypnotized me, making me forget almost all of our ten years together, while painting her as the first love I couldn't have!"He raised his head, looking pathetic with tears and snot streaming down his face. "Charlotte! I know I was wrong! I was stupid! I was blind! Can we start over, please? I'm begging you…"He practically begged on his hands and knees. He looked worlds apart from the noble head of the Lowe family he once was.Th

"I know that this is nothing compared to the pain you've suffered…" Daniel spoke slowly, each word carrying a heavy weight.By the time he finished, his entire body shook uncontrollably, and his voice choked with pathetic sobs. However, he stubbornly held up that ring.I paused, then reached out my hand.Daniel's eyes instantly lit up, and he eagerly reached to hold my hand. "Charlotte, I swear from now on—"But my fingertips went straight past the velvet box to the tiny wooden carving from his pocket."Mr. Lowe."I pulled my lips into an almost cruel smile. "You've misunderstood. I wanted my mom's wooden carving, not you."Without giving him time to react, I quickly clapped my hands twice. Two rows of men in black suits instantly swarmed in through the door."Ms. Thomson, the car is ready." The leader bowed respectfully. The men walled Daniel off. He tried to chase after me despite his disheveled appearance. "Charlotte! Where are you going?"A man dressed in black raised hi

The wind in the cemetery carried the smell of blood and ashes.Jacob Weaver's headlights sliced through the mess like a sharp sword. The crowd backed away in sheer terror like a receding tide, automatically clearing a path amidst screams of panic.Everyone knew the reputation of this ruthless tyrant. His methods were far more brutal than Daniel's.Jacob never took lives directly, but he made anyone who crossed him wish they were dead. His voice wasn't loud, yet every single word was dripping with ice. "Sever the tendons in their hands and feet. Send them to the disease control center for flea-breeding experiments."In an instant, people dropped to their knees all around. Their cries and pleas for mercy pierced the sky, while some even lost control of their bladders.Yet all this chaotic noise could no longer reach my ears. Before my vision faded completely, I felt a warm coat, still carrying body heat, gently wrapped around me. The caretaker stammered over the line. "T-The culprit even left a bouquet of white chrysanthemums at Madam Lily's grave, saying that… Ms. Charlotte ordered it!"Sienna pounded her chest hysterically. Her assistant wept to Daniel as well. "Mr. Lowe, Ms. Sienna has always been so proud! Her mother is her only weak spot!"Daniel's eyes burned crimson. "Do you have any idea that the next item on the press conference agenda was the announcement of our wedding date? I wanted to marry you, but you just had to make a scene!"Mom loved baby's breath, never white chrysanthemums.Daniel had accompanied me to pay my respects every single year, yet he had forgotten that detail.I laughed until tears filled my eyes. My vision went black, and I fell into a familiar embrace. Daniel's voice was gentle to the point of cruelty. "I have the wooden carving your mom made. Charlotte, clarify things with the reporters, alright?"Through my tear-blurred vision, I almost burst into laughter. In the end, my anger became two words forced out between clenched teeth. "You bastard!"I snapped, "Daniel, you should've just died in that gutter back then!"The smile on Daniel's face didn't fade.
