Chapter 1

The next second, I dragged my half-sister, Sienna Thomson, off the bed by her hair and shoved her into the stall.

I grabbed the plunger and brought it down hard. Dirty water and blood splattered everywhere.

The crowd scattered with sharp gasps. The looks directed at me shifted from pity to contempt.

Sienna, who had always walked all over me, clutched her face and shrieked in utter shock, "Charlotte Thomson, are you crazy? Your mom was trash, and so are you! You think I want to pick on you? Dad thinks you're an embarrassment! He told me to put you in your place!"

My eyes burned red as I hit her harder. Years of repressed anger burst wide open.

The calm smile on my boyfriend Daniel Lowe's face faded.

A loud bang echoed, and the plunger dropped from my hand.

A high-pitched ringing filled my ears.

It wasn't until warm blood dripped down my cheek that I realized what happened.

Daniel had just shot me.

The scene mirrored the moment ten years ago when he risked everything, threatening Sienna just to protect me.

Except this time, I was the target.

An overwhelming wave of grief washed over me. "Daniel…"

"Charlotte! How could you do this to your own sister? She's your family! You've completely lost your mind!"

I stared at his moving lips, unable to process his words.

Sienna wasn't my family. Her mother, Reyna Boyd, was the mistress who ruined my mother, Lily Davidson.

After Sienna was born, Mom suffered a fall that left her paralyzed from the waist down.

From that day on, our lives became a living hell.

When Mom died in a fire, I was reduced to scrounging for moldy scraps in trash cans.

Risking exposure, Daniel would scale the wall again and again just to hand me bags of food.

Warm tears had dripped onto my hands back then.

Those hard rations were the sweetest things I'd ever tasted.

Daniel had walked through the mud with me, yet he now had the nerve to call Sienna my family.

I couldn't hear the rest of his tirade.

All I caught was his final line. "You're still going to be my wife."

"Charlotte… run…" Daniel looked at me, blood bubbling at the corners of his mouth.Alerted by the commotion, the bodyguards rushed up and quickly subdued the frantic Sienna.Daniel collapsed onto the ground. Blood rapidly stained his white shirt red.As he looked at me, his eyes were clearer and filled with more remorse than ever before."I'm… sorry…"He reached out his hand, as if trying to grasp something. But his hand eventually limped down.Having lost too much blood, Daniel coughed up bloody foam from his mouth, but he forced his eyes to stay open.I knew what he was waiting for, but it was something I didn't want to and couldn't give, so I simply instructed my assistant, who rushed over, "Take him to the hospital."The moment I turned around, Daniel's suppressed, hopeless wail echoed from behind me."I'll drive you." A deep, slightly breathless voice sounded from the side.Jacob always seemed to show up at my most battered moments. Before I got out of the car, a USB dr

Daniel choked out, "Those men in black suits… barged into our home…"He clutched my hand, breathing heavily, as though he had suddenly been dragged back into that nightmare."They whipped you and your mom! 99 full lashes! They demanded to know where I was… You were covered in blood, yet you didn't say a single word…"His body hunched over in agony, and his shoulders trembled violently. "After Sienna tricked me into bed, I felt so disgusted that I wanted to die. She pretended to feel guilty, apologized, and recommended a psychiatrist to me."That doctor hypnotized me, making me forget almost all of our ten years together, while painting her as the first love I couldn't have!"He raised his head, looking pathetic with tears and snot streaming down his face. "Charlotte! I know I was wrong! I was stupid! I was blind! Can we start over, please? I'm begging you…"He practically begged on his hands and knees. He looked worlds apart from the noble head of the Lowe family he once was.Th

"I know that this is nothing compared to the pain you've suffered…" Daniel spoke slowly, each word carrying a heavy weight.By the time he finished, his entire body shook uncontrollably, and his voice choked with pathetic sobs. However, he stubbornly held up that ring.I paused, then reached out my hand.Daniel's eyes instantly lit up, and he eagerly reached to hold my hand. "Charlotte, I swear from now on—"But my fingertips went straight past the velvet box to the tiny wooden carving from his pocket."Mr. Lowe."I pulled my lips into an almost cruel smile. "You've misunderstood. I wanted my mom's wooden carving, not you."Without giving him time to react, I quickly clapped my hands twice. Two rows of men in black suits instantly swarmed in through the door."Ms. Thomson, the car is ready." The leader bowed respectfully. The men walled Daniel off. He tried to chase after me despite his disheveled appearance. "Charlotte! Where are you going?"A man dressed in black raised hi

The wind in the cemetery carried the smell of blood and ashes.Jacob Weaver's headlights sliced through the mess like a sharp sword. The crowd backed away in sheer terror like a receding tide, automatically clearing a path amidst screams of panic.Everyone knew the reputation of this ruthless tyrant. His methods were far more brutal than Daniel's.Jacob never took lives directly, but he made anyone who crossed him wish they were dead. His voice wasn't loud, yet every single word was dripping with ice. "Sever the tendons in their hands and feet. Send them to the disease control center for flea-breeding experiments."In an instant, people dropped to their knees all around. Their cries and pleas for mercy pierced the sky, while some even lost control of their bladders.Yet all this chaotic noise could no longer reach my ears. Before my vision faded completely, I felt a warm coat, still carrying body heat, gently wrapped around me. It shielded me from the freezing air and those sic

The caretaker stammered over the line. "T-The culprit even left a bouquet of white chrysanthemums at Madam Lily's grave, saying that… Ms. Charlotte ordered it!"Sienna pounded her chest hysterically. Her assistant wept to Daniel as well. "Mr. Lowe, Ms. Sienna has always been so proud! Her mother is her only weak spot!"Daniel's eyes burned crimson. "Do you have any idea that the next item on the press conference agenda was the announcement of our wedding date? I wanted to marry you, but you just had to make a scene!"Mom loved baby's breath, never white chrysanthemums.Daniel had accompanied me to pay my respects every single year, yet he had forgotten that detail.I laughed until tears filled my eyes. "I wish it really was my doing!"Reporters swarmed forward like mad.Finding no trace of remorse in my expression, Daniel trembled with fury and dragged me into the car by force.…When I saw the familiar cemetery, a sense of unease filled my heart. "No!"At Daniel's command,

My vision went black, and I fell into a familiar embrace. Daniel's voice was gentle to the point of cruelty. "I have the wooden carving your mom made. Charlotte, clarify things with the reporters, alright?"Through my tear-blurred vision, I almost burst into laughter. In the end, my anger became two words forced out between clenched teeth. "You bastard!"I snapped, "Daniel, you should've just died in that gutter back then!"The smile on Daniel's face didn't fade. He took my hand and opened a live security feed.Dozens of bodyguards surrounded Mom's grave with shovels raised on standby. My breath hitched, and my heart skipped a beat. "No!"Before the words fully left my mouth, a loud crash echoed from the video. The frame containing Mom's photo on the tombstone shattered on impact. The web of cracks in the glass looked heartbreakingly like her tear-streaked face. The pain in my chest became unbearable, and I collapsed to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably.A flash of pain cross
