OLIVE BECKETT

“Come onnnnn, you've been groveling on that chair for hours. You might as well rot alongside it.”

“I don't want to get up.”

Jess walked out with a spatula in one hand and a plate of freshly cooked eggs in the other.

“And so what if Elliot doesn't want you anymore? Fuck him! I'm pretty sure his marriage to that slimy, betraying whore won't last.”

“What if it was something I did? What if he was just testing me to see if I would stick by him?”

She rolled her eyes, walked up to me, and snatched my phone from my hands.

“You've been staring at your mobile for hours, love. Look at me, Elliot cheated on you. He betrayed you with your best friend of fifteen years, girl! He does not deserve you.”

I stroked my hair violently with my hands. It didn't help that I'd had a one-night stand with a complete stranger just a few hours after being dumped!

“And don't go sulking because you had a night with a dude last night. You did the right thing, and trust me, I'm proud of you for that.”

“It's not a joke, Jess. Besides, I still need to get my things out of the apartment. Oh God. Then I'll have to meet the both of them… together.”

“We can go together. I'm your friend, I won't let you confront those demons by yourself. Get out of it, Olive! You are a beautiful woman, thin or not. And if Elliot failed to understand that, then that's his loss.”

She set the spatula and the plate on the center table and pulled me up.

“You know what you need? A distraction. We should totally go to the class reunion happening tonight.”

“No!” I pushed her back and fell onto the couch. “I can't go to the reunion. Everyone would know Elliot and I aren't together anymore. I bragged about us ending up together right after college.”

“No one would know. He just broke up with you last night.”

“It's still the same, Jess.”

“No, it isn't. I'll be beside you all night, and trust me, no one else knows. Plus, I don't think Elliot will be there.”

“What if—”

“No what ifs,” she cut in. “No buts. It'll get your mind off things. I also heard there'll be some celebrities there, so it'll be a fun party. You need this, girl. What kind of friend would I be if I just let you rot on this couch?”

I took a deep sigh. Maybe this would serve as a huge distraction. I wiped my tear-stained cheeks, put on my big-girl pants, and got dressed.

Three hours later, Jess and I walked into the party hall with our heads held high. I was about to get some drinks when I spotted him. Elliot fucking Sterling was here and guess what? With Jane holding his hand.

I crouched down and scurried behind the long tables. I just had to stay low-key so he wouldn't notice me. I tried to get Jess's attention, but she was talking to an old classmate who was whispering something about Easton Carter, the hockey star attending the party.

I took a sip of my drink, took deep breaths, and stood up. I immediately bumped into Lynn, Winnie, and Freya—their drinks pouring onto my white mini cotton dress.

“Oh my God! I am so sorry,” Lynn shouted, being overly dramatic as usual.

“It's okay, it's okay,” I whispered, trying to get away, but it was no use.

“We're so sorry, Olive. We didn't see you there. And… cute dress, by the way. You've added some weight over the years,” Freya jumped in.

“Yeah… that's true. You weren't this fat, Olive. What happened? Life caught up with you? Besides, aren't you supposed to be here with Elliot?” Winnie added, looking around until she spotted him.

Freya nudged Winnie and whispered in her ear.

“Ooooooh, I'm so sorry. I heard about the engagement.”

She heard? When?

“It sucks that you and Elliot won't be an actual married couple after all. I mean, that was all you bragged about in college.”

I clenched my knuckles as tightly as I could and dropped my face. If I looked at them, I would cry. I couldn't do that in front of everyone. Not here.

“It is so sad. You bragging about having a happy marriage with a man you dated for eight years, and suddenly he turns around and proposes to your best friend—”

“Of fifteen years, might I add.”

“I guess this just happens when you give eight years of your life to a man and turn into an elephant overnight.”

I could hear footsteps as everyone approached us. My eyes stung, and I bet they were already red from the tears I'd been holding back.

“Hey, guys…did you hear?”

They whispered in front of me, and I stood immobile. I couldn't do anything. I couldn't say anything. And what could I have said? They were all right.

I was the one who had wasted years on a man.

“It's so sad, isn't it? He dumped you, and you're here looking hopeless and drenched in alcohol.”

“She definitely looks the part,” they joked, and there was an uproar of laughter.

“You should start exercising. You know what? I can help! One of my cousins owns a gym nearby. I could tell him to give you a discount on registering.”

“Wow, that's amazing, Freya!”

“She could probably find someone who's ready to take her.”

As they continued talking, my watery eyes dried up. Slowly, my hurt—that pain in my chest—turned into nothing but fucking rage. How dare they talk about me like this?!

How dare they have the nerve to judge my character and my personality?!

“It's the least I can do to help.”

I raised my head and looked back at them. I wanted to shut them up for good!

“I have a new boyfriend,” I blurted. The words came out before I could take them back.

Everyone looked at me, shocked and then interested.

“Who is it?” Freya asked, narrowing her eyes at me.

My eyes darted everywhere but at them. I was fucked.

“Easton Carter,” I blurted. I did it again!

“The hockey star Easton Carter?” someone asked from the crowd.

“I don't believe you. Prove it.”

  • Melting The Ice Captain    Chapter 93 : Camp Out 2

OLIVE BECKETT “Relax, I'm not going to massage it.”I tried to calm Easton down while he whimpered. All I did was hold his arm, really. I didn't expect him to have an injury from the fall, but it is what it is. Thankfully, the first aid kit I brought came in handy. After applying the heat balm, I dropped his arm gently. Ethan, Summer, Jess, and Ollie walked into the tent.“Still crying?” Ethan said, flashing a grin at Easton. I felt bad for my baby. He was genuinely in pain, but after a few days, the swelling would subside.Summer tried to comfort him, and Jess, on the other hand, made up jokes to distract him. I picked up the box and dropped it right back after closing it.“Don't tell him sorry. He isn't a kid,” Ethan said after a few minutes.“I hurt my arm, in case you forgot,” Easton said, rolling his eyes in annoyance. Ollie stepped forward, dropping his hands on Jess's shoulders.“Easton, I'm sorry to say, but if you knew you were bad at horse racing, you would've just said so.

  • Melting The Ice Captain    Chapter 92 : Camp Out Part 1

OLIVE BECKETTWho would've thought that camping would be so cool? We had to drive down to Long Point State Park in northern New York on Lake Ontario's island. Ethan had called one of his buddies who prepared tents for us, along with available resources.By the time we arrived, tents were up, and they had briefed us on all we needed to know. We would shower in one of the indoor rooms, and food was by the kitchen down in the farm. It was basically a farm where many animals were auctioned, but our campsite was outside since we had prepared for that. However, there were rooms too, as it was some kind of resort as well.“Please remind me never to come on a campout. Ever,” Easton whined while he put on his boots. Eddie, Ethan's friend, had advised we wear boots to prevent our shoes from stepping in dung and whatnot.“Oh, come on. Stop whining like a baby.”He opened his mouth wide agape, just for effect. “How dare you accuse me of such?” Hands on his chest.I laughed, crouching down as I he

  • Melting The Ice Captain    Chapter 91 : Sterile

EASTON CARTER “We are what?!”“Going on a camp… for a few days.”“I have games—”“In the next three weeks,” Ethan interrupted. “But you can have a two-day camp off. And since I’m also CEO, I can take that break.” He pulled Summer to his side and planted a kiss on her head.“Come on, it’s going to be fun,” Olive nudged from my side, a fun glint in her eyes as she rocked our joined hands.“Babe…” My voice trailed off. “Are you sure you can do this? I mean, it’s in the middle of nowhere, and you’re pregnant.”“I’m pregnant, baby. Not disabled,” she chuckled.I scanned the room. I was the only one protesting this damn thing. Jess stood by her side with a tall guy who looked like Roman Reigns Junior. She had complained about being a third wheel and brought her own “distraction.”A two-day campout would help me before our big game in three weeks though, plus, I need to stay alert incase Olly needs anything. “Okay,” I said in defeat. Since Olive was okay with it, I could try camping again

  • Melting The Ice Captain    Chapter 90 : Anxiety

OLIVE BECKETT Summer and Jess chatted along while I ordered an apple fruit drink. Jess was going on about this hot guy she saw at work. She's an engineer, and most times, she says the men she works with are disgusting, ugly things that choose to cheat on their wives and hit on her.“Wait,” Summer said, dropping the menu on the table. Who would've thought that this woman, who I was oddly jealous of, had become my friend instead?“Why did you bring us here, Olly? And you haven't said anything since we've arrived.”I shook my head calmly as I waited to drop the news. We'd only told Easton's parents, and I needed to tell my girls regardless.Soon enough, the waitress brought my apple drink, and they both placed their orders.“I have something to tell both of you.” They dropped their phones, staring at me with interest.“Spill!” Jess said this time.“Are you pregnant?” Summer asked out of the blue. I looked at her, defeated, and then she caught on.Her eyes shone wide in shock, and then t

  • Melting The Ice Captain    Chapter 89 : Advice

EASTON CARTERI had called for a meeting with Ethan at the cafe. At first he was worried but I assured everything was fine right after. He dropped down from his car and walked right into the cafe. It didn't take long before he spotted me.“So, what was so important you had to get me out of an important meeting?” He asked while he sat, propping an eye brow.I sat straighter. I could tell he was trying to decipher what the actual problem was from my expression.“I want to propose to Olive. I want to make her my wife,” I blurted.“Woahhhhhh. I didn't…are you sure?” “Yes. I don't know.”“You're not sure if you want to make your girlfriend your wife?” “I…did that sound bad?” “I don't know,” he rested on the chair, arms crossing his chest. “Is it?”“Look, I didn't call you here to ask me questions.”“I know that. But you called me here because you already have a decision made and need my advice. But it doesn't seem like that.”“I've just been…thinking.”“About what? Does she not want th

  • Melting The Ice Captain    Chapter 88 : You Okay?

OLIVE BECKETT “How is that I just walked round and picked out things that I liked and I'm this exhausted?” I complained from my spot in the kitchen as I watched Easton prepare dinner. He had sent the servants home for the night, so it was only the two of us in their big house.“Walking around can be really stressful you know?”I groaned in agreement then took a sip of my orange juice. “I should have drank a lot of red wine and champagne at your parents anniversary,” I said with a deep sigh.Easton chuckled and dropped a plate of seedless grapes in front of me. “You can have the raw materials of red wine though,” he teased with a smile.“It's not the same,” I groaned and threw one into my mouth. “Oh, this is really good.”He laughed, returning back to the cooker. “The duck will be ready in some minutes.”Smiling as I ate more of the grapes. “Your talents in the kitchen is really impressive. Some months ago, you couldn't even boil rice to save your life and now, here you are preparing
