London, England ~ Ava’s POV

The Shade and Henry were on one of the rooftops, having our final session on sniping. Personally, I didn’t see why we needed the training. We had sniper assassins in the mafia for a reason. Why did those at the top have to train in it when we could pay them to do the work?

I personally didn’t like remote killing. I considered close contact killing to be more efficient and faster although it was less safe.

“Each of you will be handed a case of a disassembled rifle. Your goal: Assemble your rifle and eliminate your target in under thirty seconds.” The grumpy man with bushy eyebrows instructed.

A few minutes later four men arrived, each clutching unto a silver briefcase. I watched, slightly envious as the case with the inscription ‘Boss’, was handed over to my brother.

“Ready? Kill!” The instructor barked once we had taken our respective places.

I had my rifle assembled and ready in mere seconds. My target was a dummy in the passenger seat of a taxi coming in fast. It was expected to take a sharp right turn, and then I would lose sight of it completely.

I glanced through the scope and carefully aimed at the dummy in preparation for a clean head shot, then I pressed the trigger. The bullet pierced through the glass and went straight into its head.

“Congratulations, my Princess. You completed your assignment in under twenty-five seconds. I sincerely wish I could say the same for my future boss.” The man grunted, his last words heavy with sarcasm.

I whipped my head in Henry’s direction to see him still struggling with parts of his rifle. He glanced up in frustration and our eyes met. I disassembled mine and arranged its parts neatly into the briefcase before ambling towards him.

“Here.” I smiled encouragingly and guided him on the proper way to assemble a rifle and load it.

This was how it always ended. He getting frustrated over failing an assignment, and me stepping in to clean up his mess or help finish the assignment.

His target was a dummy in a building metres away from here, which bobbed its head up and down continuously. I showed him how to aim properly and left him to press the trigger when the dummy’s head bobbed back up.

“Congratulations, Boss. You completed your assignment with assistance in exactly five minutes.” The instructor scoffed before leaving. He shook his head and murmured to himself as he went.

“Come on.” I muttered, leaving with the others right behind me. Henry stayed behind to try to disassemble his rifle. Keyword- try.

“That instructor was cruel.” Ellie spoke up and glanced behind her at my brother’s diminishing figure in sympathy.

“Cut him some slack. The man is just stressed over the fact that our next Boss may bring this mafia to its knees.” Leroy pointed out, and Eli nodded in agreement.

What he said was nothing short of the truth. My brother failed to gain the respect of the Shade, unlike me who had it without breaking a sweat. I really hoped for the mafia’s sake that my father found a way to make me the boss, because Henry for some reason wouldn’t give up his rightful position. I didn’t intend on killing my brother either to get what I wanted.

I headed straight for my room to freshen up before leaving for the dining hall. The cook had whipped up bangers and mash for dinner. Everyone was present, everyone but Henry. Even my father was here and that was saying something. He was probably sulking in his room again, which was the usual after every training session.

I sighed and begun filling two plates with food. Realizing what I was up to, Eli placed the plates on a tray while Ellie filled two cups with tea and placed them also on it. I balanced the tray in one hand and entered my brother’s room without knocking.

“Hey!” He exclaimed, quickly pulling the duvet over his body, “You really have to stop doing that.”

I rolled my eyes and set the tray on his bed.

“I’ll stop when you stop skipping dinner with us.” I smiled sweetly at him.

“Don’t worry, little sis. I’ll come down to have dinner with the family when your father stops glaring at me like he wants to put a dagger in my heart.”

“So… never.” I sighed.

“Why are there two plates?” He asked after throwing on his shirt.

“Oh, come on, it’ll be like old times when I used to sneak a few snacks up here so we could share.” I grinned, plopping down onto his bed.

He just shook his head at me and begun eating. I looked around his room, it hadn’t changed that much from the last time I was here. My eyes finally rested on a framed photo of a gorgeous woman with brown hair and light blue eyes. Our mother. The only thing we had in common, considering we each got our dominating genes from our fathers.

“How was she like?” I gestured towards the photo with my fork, realizing that I had never really bothered to ask anyone until now.

I never got to meet her. I was taken away from her the moment I was given birth to and never allowed to contact her. Apparently, all I could ever need was my father and the Shade.

“Trust me, she was a horrible woman. She was having an affair with my father way before your father’s coma. She only agreed to marry Frederick for the power and the money. She was secretly in love with my father. Everything was going according to plan for them, until I came along. It was obvious I wasn’t your father’s when my eye colour turned out black instead of any shade of blue.

Strangely, he neither said nor did anything about it. Five years later when you came along, that was when your father filed for a divorce. She realized he had kept her around only to function as an ovum donor. Nevertheless, she agreed to the divorce on the condition that I continued to stay with the mafia, unharmed.

The night you were delivered, was when it was confirmed that she was a psychopath. I watched as she held a knife against your throat, ready to end your life if your father didn’t swear to make me the boss over you. He readily gave her his word, he couldn’t risk taking any chances.”

I gaped at Henry as this new piece of information sank into my consciousness. My own mother wanted to kill me the very night she had me. What did I ever do to her?

“That night your father’s hatred for me ignited. I not only remind him of our mother’s infidelity, but I also remind him of the fact that I was the reason he almost lost you.” Henry ended.

“Why did he marry someone like her in the first place? Was he blinded by love or something?”

“Their marriage was an arranged one, and actually I think you should be thankful they met, or else you wouldn’t be here.” He replied in a tone that ended the discussion and returned to his food.

  • Their Rivalry   EPILOGUE

Maldives, South Asia ~ Ava’s POVI turned over in my bed at Villa Nautica to see my husband wide awake and engrossed in something on his MacBook.Bloody hell!I thought I’d told him to leave that thing in Moscow. We were on a honeymoon. A moment away from the mafia to just relax and enjoy the warmth of each other’s bodies should be cherished.Nevertheless, I was curious about what had caught his attention. I leaned over his shoulder to peek. It was an email from Sasha. She had forwarded a message to Vlad. The Americans definitely weren’t pleased with the condition in which their goods arrived and were prepared to retaliate. It would be very stupid on their part to try to make enemies out of four very powerful mafias and expect to win. Anthony would surely get what’s coming to him if he made a wrong move. Although he hadn’t blown up the targeted businesses as promised, they remained closed off to the public. If the feud between the De Los Santos and Ivanovs had thought me anything, it

Oxford, England ~ Ava’s POVVladimir texted Anthony with Kenneth’s phone. The three were to meet up at the pub exactly at 1:30pm. According to Jeremy, Anthony would arrive thirty minutes earlier to wait for Maddison and Kenneth. We had a few hours to kill before the set time arrived, and we used it to go over the plan.Isabella and Miguel would stay behind in the car with Jeremy and Kenneth, while Vlad and I confronted Anthony. No matter who killed him, it had been agreed that the American mafia would be handed over to the Russo family.Miguel and Ellie had set a date for their wedding. If everything went down in our favour today, they’d get married in the first week of the third month. Camilla had also informed us that she would let Eli know about her pregnancy after we returned to London.Vlad and I hadn’t gotten the chance to fix a date for our wedding, but Isabella and Ellie were more than happy to help me decide. Camilla wasn’t particularly happy about my engagement to Vlad, but s

Oxford, England ~ Ava’s POVIt felt like a weight had been lifted off my chest.Vladimir carried me to the bed and threw me on top of it. He preferred to undress me himself, so I laid back and watched him strip down to just his boxer briefs. He rolled up my dress till it reached slightly above my hips. His fingers tugged off my panties, and I watched him toss them across the room without a care.He raised my leg over his shoulder and trailed kisses down the inside of my thigh. I felt his lips and tongue slowly draw near my pussy and I arched my back in response to him. I wanted more. Vlad held me back down in place, and gently sucked on my clit.I clutched tightly onto the sheets, the pleasure was unimaginable, and Vlad had practically restricted any movement of my lower body. His tongue worked my clit in every direction possible, and I felt myself drawing closer to an orgasm.“Fuck.” I heard him grunt when he slid two fingers into me. His fingers pumped in and out of me, slowly and ge

Canterbury, England ~ Ava’s POVKenneth had straight up refused Vladimir’s offer but had given us information anyway. Apparently, he had a feeling that we’d kill him anyway. Bratva was known for their dishonesty with other mafias.Maddison was supposed to have arrived in Oxford today so she could send a text to the boss by tonight. Which was why I convinced Bella to leave us for my safe house in Oxford. There, she’ll use Maddison’s phone to contact the boss. This was in case her phone was being tapped or tracked.Kenneth himself was to be in Oxford by tomorrow so he could contact the boss when the sun went down. If there wasn’t a change of plans, the three were to meet up at the pub the day after tomorrow. Before Vladimir could go ahead to kill him, he spoke up again.“I’m counting on you to lose this battle.” He stated too confidently.“And why would that be?” I inquired with a slightly raised eyebrow.“Anthony Williams should never be underestimated, and that was your first mistake.”

Cambridge, England ~ Ava’s POVWhen Vladimir asked to handle Maddison the same way he’d done with Jeremy, I gave him the go ahead. If he failed to get through to her, we could always resort to torture. Back at the safe house we got her tied up in the basement and waited for the effects of the drug to wear off.Fortunately, it didn’t take that long. Her eyelids fluttered open, and I realized it took a moment for her to take in the sudden change in surroundings. An hour ago, she was this close to locking lips with a hot stranger, now she’s tied up in the middle of a dark room with no idea where she was or if she’d make it out alive. We had decided not to turn on the lights yet, so the room was pitch black. Vlad stood at the entrance of the cell, directly opposite Maddison, while Isabella and I stood at opposite corners facing her.We watched her try to break free for a while until she finally gave up and tossed her head back in frustration. I rested my head back against the wall and shut

London, England ~ Ava’s POV“So…” Bella begun, “What’s the plan?”She was trying so hard to mask a grin with a serious expression. I could only imagine what was going through her mind right now. Unlike the last safe house we’d been to, the rooms in this safe house weren’t soundproof, a fact I had forgotten. She probably heard it all, every scream, moan, and grunt.Bloody hell! I wished at the moment that the floor would open up and swallow me whole.I had put my phone on silent because knowing her, she’d probably made me a hot topic on our girls only group chat. Ellie would be blowing up my phone with texts and calls, asking for details, and Cami would be appalled.Camilla had earlier expressed that she disapproved of the temporary collaboration with Bratva. She hated Vladimir with every bone in her body. Her words, not mine. His family was the reason for the deaths of her parents.“Well, I’ll really love to use this sometime. Preferably on American skin.” Vlad said, holding up a custo
