Chapter 1

I opened my eyes after I was temporarily blinded by a bright, white light.

A younger Meredith Snow was criticizing me with a pointed finger in my direction. Right now, she didn't look anything like an educated person.

"You useless oaf! Why are you causing a scene at my school? I'm Professor Westin's favorite student! How dare you act like a mad dog just because I'm talking to him?

"You have no talents of your own, and you're always suspicious of me. Even if I did cheat on you, it would've been your fault for forcing my hand!"

I knew that Meredith would become a professor in the future. It was unthinkable that a professor-to-be would try to justify cheating on her partner without any hint of regret or guilt. She was acting as if I were the one in the wrong.

Meredith's younger brother, Matthew Snow, said nonchalantly, "If you have the balls for it, go ahead and divorce Meredith. She has a PhD and is about to become a university professor. You're just a nobody who drives cabs. You should be kissing Meredith's feet and thanking her for falling for you.

"You really are shameless for causing a ruckus on campus and ruining Meredith's reputation. I'm going to teach you a lesson you won't forget in your dead parents' stead!"

Matthew aimed a kick at me even before he finished speaking. I hastily dodged out of the way, but I still lost my balance and crashed into a trash bin. The disgusting trash spilled all over my body.

Rage and despair swirled in my heart as I brushed my hands across the slippery floor.

I persevered through the unbearable pain throbbing at the end of my spine and climbed back up to my feet. Meredith and I made eye contact after I straightened up. Her gaze was overflowing with disgust.

I knew that my own eyes no longer shone with the same adoration I once felt for her. "Let's get a divorce," I said.

Her expression remained indifferent when she replied, "Sure. I wanted to file for divorce a long time ago."

"Good. We can drop by the courthouse to process our divorce."

Meredith's eyes gleamed with confidence when she looked at me. "You'll get kicked to the curb. Don't even think about trying to fight for custody for Elias either. You're nothing but an uncultured cab driver. He won't learn anything if he follows you."

She was behaving just like she did in my past life. I couldn't accept her infidelity when I first found out about her cheating on me, so I had also told her that I wanted a divorce.

Meredith knew that I had a soft spot for Elias Fairfield, our son. If my parents were still alive, they wouldn't allow me to give up on him either.

Liam Snow, my father-in-law, who was standing to the side, looked like he had something to say, but Matthew held him back. All of them knew that the moment Elias was brought up, I would willingly endure any hardship for his sake.

But after living through my past life, I was well aware of the Snows' awful attitudes, including my son, Elias. I refused to suffer for anyone's sake in this life.

Just like in my past life, I left the scene without saying another word.

Before the door closed, I heard Meredith say in a mocking tone, "See! He's too much of a coward to actually file for divorce!"

I scoffed before pushing her hurtful words to the back of my mind. When I made it back home, I began to tidy up the place.

Meredith and I had only been married for a short while before I was banished to the basement a decade ago. She disliked how I had to wake up at the crack of dawn every morning, so she forbade me from going upstairs.

In order to earn a little more cash and not wanting to disrupt her rest, I had moved into the basement without protest. There was only one tiny window in the basement, so the place was constantly blanketed in darkness even when the light was switched on.

The basement was freezing cold in winter and boiling hot in summer. The air was also incredibly damp on humid days, which contributed to my developing rheumatism.

Meredith got to enjoy the king-sized bed all by herself upstairs. She even had her family move in to occupy the empty rooms.

When I recalled how ungrateful the Snows had been, I couldn't help but lament my pitiful and sorry state in my past life.

I was going to move out of the basement. I didn't care who its new occupant would be, but it certainly would not be me!

The house was still empty when I moved a box that was less than 20 inches wide upstairs. Meredith should still be in school at this hour. She was likely stuck to her professor like glue under the guise of discussing their research.

Liam and Matthew were gambling addicts, so they should be playing cards in one of the entertainment centers.

My parents were the ones who purchased the house for me. They had worked themselves to the bone to save up enough money to buy a house for me, but they never got to enjoy the fruits of their labor and had never actually lived in the house.

It wasn't exactly a big house. There were only two bedrooms. Meredith and Elias lived in the master bedroom while Liam and Matthew lived in the second bedroom.

I moved Liam's and Matthew's belongings out of the second bedroom, piling all the items up like a mountain of trash in the living room.

After some time had passed, I spoke to Penelope over the phone, and she told me about what was happening.Oliver was swiftly fired from the school after the fiasco at the academic conference. He was eventually imprisoned after many of his illegal activities during his tenure were brought to light, per the Aster family's wishes.Penelope even paid a small fortune to the prison doctors to silently perform chemical castration on him.Meredith had also been fired from the school. She ended up being caught up in the massive debts that Liam and Matthew racked up during their time in Austona. She was later captured by loan sharks and forced to become a prostitute."What about the child?" I didn't say Elias' name aloud.Penelope remained mute.Later on, I received an international parcel from Praman. The envelope still had Praman's unique scent clinging to it when I held it in my hands. There was a single photograph in the parcel. In the photo, a pale, young boy was lying in a freezer.

The presentation slides that had been filled with important information were replaced with a video of two people sleeping with each other, thanks to Penelope's control over the multimedia console.Footage of two naked bodies locked in a passionate embrace was broadcasted on the massive screen. Oliver knocked over a water bottle in shock when Meredith's moans echoed through the entire room.A deathly silence had fallen over the room. It didn't take long before people started recognizing the two naked figures on the screen to be Oliver and Meredith. That day, the headline, "Explicit video broadcasted during an academic conference", trended in first place on the hot topic chart.Meanwhile, Matthew was seated at a VIP table within Utopia Casino's grand hall in Austona. His eyes were reddened as he placed bet after bet.The staff member who was serving him was one of Penelope's men, and he was busy stacking up all of Matthew's winnings."Zack introduced us to a good and reliable pla

My lips curled into a smile as I watched their backs grow smaller until they disappeared from my line of sight. Rainwater had pooled on the windowsill from the night before, reflecting the twisted smile stretched across my face.…It was 3:00 pm when I checked the time next. There were about three hours left before Meredith finished her work shift. Before she returned home, I prepared a feast for her.The moment Meredith stepped through the door, she was greeted with an impressive spread of delicious dishes. She stared at me in disbelief before a familiar glint appeared in her eyes. She looked as if she were looking at me from my past life. Her tone was a little mocking when she said, "Have you learned your lesson? Are you going to continue insisting on wanting a divorce?"I chuckled and replied, "I admit that I misunderstood you. You and Professor Westin simply share a teacher-student relationship. I apologize."Since I was being so diligent, Meredith lost the desire to make t

"Forget it," Penelope said. "I have nothing else to say since he has already stooped so low. Besides, I don't have much time left in me."Seeing how stubborn Penelope was, I tossed the envelope down in front of her."Take a look at this. You funded his research to look for a cure to treat your family's genetic disease. But after his research bore fruit, he didn't share the cure with you. On the contrary, he added harmful drugs with severe side effects to your medication. He's trying to poison you to death!"Penelope studied the photos that Jeremy had secretly snapped of the laboratory and the medical ingredients list that Oliver had used. The exhaustion in her eyes was swiftly replaced by a burning fury.I knew then that I had succeeded in convincing her to join my cause. I sat next to her.Silence blanketed the room for a long while before Penelope asked in a trembling voice, "What do you plan to do?"I got to my feet and locked the door before returning to Penelope's side. I th

I looked at Jeremy Jones in confusion upon hearing his words. "Are you saying that you can help me take revenge on them?" I asked.Jeremy unlocked his phone and showed me a photo of a woman. "I can't, but someone else can."He pointed at the screen and continued, "I found out about her when I was carrying out my investigation for you. I had no other choice. People in my line of business will have misfortune fall upon them if they look into someone they shouldn't."It's why we usually do background checks on our clients and their targets before taking on the job. This woman here is Penelope Aster. She's Oliver's wife and the eldest daughter of the Aster family. Oliver was able to rise to the top of the academic world thanks to her help."They've been married for many years, but they weren't able to have a child because of Penelope."I cut in before he could continue, "You want me to look for Penelope and expose her husband's true self to her? What if she already knows that Oliver i

Meredith's gentle expression immediately morphed into one of displeasure. "Zack Fairfield, do you have to force me into a corner like this? I'm already going along with what you want. Why are you still unsatisfied? "You're sleeping in the master bedroom all by yourself while Elias and I are sleeping in the smaller room. Dad suffers from rheumatism all year-round, but I still convinced him to sleep in the basement. What else do you want me to do?"Liam was already complaining, even though he had only slept in the basement for one night. I had to sleep in the basement for most of my life, yet I didn't say a word. I didn't bother continuing the conversation with Meredith. I turned around and entered my room.I was determined to get a divorce, and I wasn't going to change my mind. I concealed the fact that I had heard what they were saying when I was standing beyond the basement door. It was imperative that they didn't find out I was aware of their plans. But Elias' words and Meredi
