Chapter 2

Author: Serein M
That night, the stress and the cold caught up with me. I got a bad fever.

At 102 degrees, I was dizzy and completely out of it.

In my daze, I felt a warm towel wiping my body.

"Avery. Be a good girl. Take your medicine." A deep, unbelievably gentle voice whispered in my ear.

I forced my eyes open. Ryder sat by the bed. His eyes were full of worry.

"Go away." I turned my head, my voice rough. "I don't need you."

"Still so stubborn when you're sick." He stroked my forehead. "The water is perfectly warm. Just drink a little."

His hand was so warm. I wanted to lean into it. But I forced myself to stay cold.

"I said I don't need you."

"But I need to take care of you." His voice held a tenderness that stunned me. "It's my duty."

Duty. Always duty.

I closed my eyes and ignored him. But he wouldn't leave. He stayed glued to the bedside.

I could feel his burning gaze pinned to my fever-flushed lips. His breathing was heavy.

When I woke up again, I was wrapped tightly in his arms.

His body was scorching hot. Hotter than my fever.

I could clearly feel his flexed thigh muscles through his thin clothes. And that aggressive, massive hardness pressed dangerously hot against me.

Shivers shot through me like electricity. Shamelessly, I felt my body react to him.

"Awake?" His hand stroked my back. His voice was incredibly raspy. "Feeling better?"

His eyes held a desperate, begging hunger. "Do you want to... try this with me?"

Once upon a time, I would have been thrilled. But after last night's humiliation, it just felt like pity. Like charity.

"I feel sick." I shoved him away with a cold face. "Get away from me."

All the color drained from his face. He looked like an abandoned stray dog.

"I'm sorry." He immediately let go. "I was wrong. I shouldn't have done that... not now. I'm sorry."

He scrambled out of bed in a panic. He smoothed down his wrinkled shirt. The tight white shirt hugged his perfect frame. Every line of his chest and abs was on full display.

My heart raced for no reason.

"But Avery." He looked back at me. His eyes were totally panicked. "If you go out again... don't get hurt, okay? If I smell another man on you, I'll go crazy."

Seeing him walk on eggshells around me made my resolve waver.

No. I couldn't do this anymore.

Three days later, my fever broke.

While cleaning my room, I noticed a pair of leather dog-training gloves missing from my closet. They were my favorite pair. They smelled exactly like me.

At dinner, I sat across the table. Ryder was elegantly cutting his steak.

"My training gloves are gone," I said casually. "Maybe they got stolen."

His knife and fork froze. The blade screeched harshly against the plate.

He pressed his lips together and looked up. A dangerous glint flashed in his eyes. Then he let out a low chuckle.

"Really?" His voice was low and deadly. "Maybe something just really liked their scent and took them."

I paused. Why would a CEO steal my gloves? Did he have some weird kink?

"What do you mean?"

"Nothing." He went back to his steak. His movements were unnervingly fluid. "Maybe they'll come back on their own."

It was weird, but I didn't care enough to pry.

"Right." I put my fork down. "I have a gift for you tonight. Come home early."

His hands stopped again. His eyes instantly blazed.

"A gift?" His voice roughened. "What kind of gift?"

"You'll see."

I was going to give him the divorce papers. And the confirmation letter for my overseas job. It was time to say goodbye for real.

"Whenever you need me," his voice dropped, impossibly deep and suggestive. "I'll be there."

My face heated up. What did he mean? Why was he sounding so... seductive?

His phone rang. He picked it up, grabbed a folder, and rushed out.

"See you tonight, Avery." He looked back from the door. His fiery gaze could melt me on the spot.

I watched him leave. My heart kicked up a notch.

What he just said. That look in his eyes... Why did it feel so dirty?

I pressed a hand to my skipping heart. I touched my burning ears. I was embarrassed and a little annoyed.

Why did every word out of his mouth sound like a filthy promise?

I slowly turned my head. The man holding me was Ryder's mirror image. But his energy was all wrong. And he was smirking right at me."Surprise!" he winked. "I'm the evil twin, Ryan."Me: "???"Ryder’s face was thunderous. He stalked over and physically snatched me out of Ryan's arms. "Ryan! What the hell is wrong with you!""Relax, little bro," Ryan chuckled, throwing his hands up in surrender. "I just wanted to see the woman who's got our big, bad Alpha crying on the internet."My face instantly caught fire. Wait. They all knew?"Just how many of you know about Midnight_Howler?" I demanded."The entire pack," Ryan grinned. "You're practically our internet-famous Luna."Ryder looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole. I just raised an eyebrow and stared him down."Well, well. It seems we need to have a little chat about your 'infidelity' accusations."Ryan wisely took that as his cue to exit, leaving the two of us staring at each other in the gym.I crossed my arms, smirkin

Ryder went completely silent. He looked like a giant wolf awaiting punishment.I poked a finger hard into his rock-solid abs, getting more annoyed by the second."Six months of marriage, and you completely iced me out," I said, tracing circles on his chest. "You had me thinking I was just a pawn for your business empire. A contract wife.""No!" He captured my lips frantically. "Never!""Then what was it?""Because..." He stared into my eyes with a tragic, desperate kind of love. "Because you're my one and only mate. A werewolf only gets one fated mate in a lifetime. I was terrified of losing control and hurting you.""And I was terrified that if you found out the truth, you really would run away to Europe."His raw honesty chipped away at my anger. "So, you've been in love with me this whole time?"He nodded, slumping in relief like a man on death row getting a pardon."For years," he admitted, brushing a thumb across my cheek. "Since the first time I laid eyes on you at that gala.""T

The next day, I tore the entire bedroom apart. Still no application. I knew it. Ryder definitely snatched it in the heat of the moment.I put on my best makeup and marched straight up to the top floor of Sterling Group. When I pushed open the heavy mahogany doors, Ryder was right in the middle of a board meeting.Every suit in the room turned to stare, but my eyes were locked dead on him."Sorry to interrupt," I said, strolling right up to him. "I need a word with my husband.""Take ten, gentlemen," Ryder ordered smoothly. "Go grab a coffee."Once the room cleared out, he poured me a glass of water. "What brings my gorgeous wife to the office?" he asked, throwing me a flawless, innocent smile."Did you see something on my nightstand?" I cut right to the chase."Your nightstand?" He tilted his head, acting like he was racking his brain. "Did you lose something important, sweetheart?"God, he was a good actor."Never mind." I set the glass down. "I probably just misplaced it.""If you l

My arrogant Alpha was on his knees. At my feet.He forced my hand flat against his scorching chest. I could feel his heart thrashing, trying to punch its way out of his ribcage."Feel that?" he rasped. "This is what you do to me."He dragged my hand down. He stopped over a vicious, jagged scar on his lower stomach. "I got this fighting for the Alpha title," he said, staring up at me with crazed devotion. "Just so I could have the right to stand beside you. To be worthy of you."That was it. That broke me.I yanked him into a kiss, pouring everything I had into it. He kissed back instantly, like a starving beast who hadn't eaten in a century. We were tearing at each other when I finally pushed him back, gasping for air."Those guys..." I panted against his lips. "It was just a misunderstanding. Chloe sent them. I didn't touch them."He froze. Two seconds later, the dark agony in his eyes vanished, replaced by pure, feral ecstasy."Really?" he trembled."Really."He snapped. He scooped m

Ryder was on the edge. He was fighting a violent shift. I didn't back down.Instead, I pushed his buttons on purpose. "Yeah, well, since my husband doesn't want me, I have to find my own fun."I turned back to the two male models lingering by the door. "Come on in. Don't just stand there."The air around Ryder went still. It was suffocating. The ice in his eyes didn't just shatter. It exploded into raw agony and blinding jealousy. His fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. Veins popped on his arms. Still, he held it in. He refused to snap in front of an audience."Avery, are you out of your mind?" one of his friends gasped."I'm perfectly sane." I marched the two models toward my study right in front of everyone. "Since I'm clearly unwanted here, I'm going to find someone who actually appreciates me."A low, guttural growl ripped from Ryder’s throat—like a wounded beast. I didn't even look back.I stepped into the study and locked the door behind us."Shirts off," I told the

My heart hammered in my chest. The shock morphed into a twisted thrill.I wasn't scared of this at all. Honestly, it was hot. This cold, suit-wearing billionaire was a wild beast on the inside. And he was dying for me to "tame" him!I wanted to storm downstairs, grab him by the tie, and tell him I knew everything.I wanted to show him I wasn't afraid. I wanted him to unleash his inner beast.I stood up, ready to go downstairs. Just then, the doorbell rang.I frowned. Who was here this late?I walked to the door and almost passed out.Unbelievable. Chloe had actually sent male models to my door. Two muscular blondes stood on my porch, their tight t-shirts straining against their chests."Hi, Ms. Avery." One flashed a charming smile. "Chloe sent us to help you 'unwind'.""What?!" I panicked. "Didn't Chloe tell you? I'm a married woman!""We know," the other guy winked. "Chloe mentioned your husband has some... performance issues. She said you needed a hand."My face burned hot enough to
