Chapter 1

"Tonight has to work."

I gave myself a pep talk in the mirror. My fingers traced the expensive lace lingerie. Black. Sheer. Skin-tight. I looked so hot it made my own mouth go dry.

Ryder had been on a business trip for three days. He was coming home tonight.

Three days apart. Long enough to make any normal man starved for his wife.

I slipped on his oversized white dress shirt. I left it unbuttoned. The black lace peeked through the white cotton.

The shirt still smelled like him. It mixed with my own scent to create a deadly temptation.

Heavy footsteps echoed on the stairs. I posed on the master bed. My heart pounded.

This time, it would definitely work.

The door pushed open. Ryder walked in, fresh from the shower. A towel hung loosely low on his hips.

Damn. His body was a sin. Broad shoulders, narrow waist. His abs looked carved from stone. His V-line disappeared right under the white towel. A man built like this had to be aggressively dominant in bed.

But we’d been married for six months, and his body was still completely off-limits to me.

"Avery." He froze, his eyes locking on me. "What are you doing in my room?"

I sat up. The shirt fell open, leaving nothing to the imagination.

"Waiting for my husband." I dropped my voice low and sultry. "I missed you."

His eyes caught fire. He dragged his gaze over my body. His pupils blew wide open.

I heard his breathing turn ragged. His chest heaved.

Then he snapped his eyes away. His Adam's apple bobbed hard.

"You should go back to your room." He tried to sound cold, but his voice shook.

"Why?" My bare feet stepped on the plush rug. I backed him into a corner. "I'm your wife."

I reached out to hug him. Every muscle in his body instantly locked up.

But in the dim light, I saw a dark flush spread across his usually pale face.

"Then... stay here tonight." His voice was gravelly.

My heart raced. My blood ran hot. Blushing, I crawled onto the bed. He laid down next to me, stiff as a board.

I looped my arms around his neck and kissed him.

He let out a low growl and finally kissed me back.

He kissed me deep.

It felt desperate, like he wanted to devour me whole.

I dragged his hand down my body. His palm was burning hot. His fingers were actually trembling.

I could feel his arousal through the fabric. He was huge, dangerous, and ready to snap.

His lips trailed down my neck. His sharp teeth lightly scraped over my pulse point. Shivers tore through me. I was melting under his touch.

I thought he was finally going to take me. But then he jerked up.

"No." He panted hard and reached out with his right hand. He refused to look at me. "I can help you."

Not this again. Even now, aching for me, he would only offer his fingers.

My heart turned to ice.

"Ryder Sterling!" I shot off the bed, tears stinging my eyes. "Is it impossible for you to want me?!"

I grabbed a pillow and smashed it into him. "There are plenty of men on the West Coast! Anyone is better than you! I can replace you in a heartbeat, you hear me?!"

I slammed the door behind me. I left him sitting alone on the edge of the bed. He looked like a trapped beast in a cage.

My hands shook on the steering wheel. I didn't get it. Why did I always act so desperate? He didn't even dare to touch me for more than a minute!

An hour later, I sat on the couch in my dog-training studio. I was downing whiskey with my best friend, Chloe.

"He rejected you again?" Chloe handed me a tissue.

"Not rejected." I threw back the liquor. It burned my throat. "Humiliated."

"Maybe he has trauma? Or maybe he's gay?"

"No way." I smiled bitterly. "He was supposed to marry my sister, but she ran. I fell for him at first sight, so I took her place. I got the ring, but I can't get the man."

I picked up a golden retriever puppy from the table. It barked and squirmed, scratching red marks on my neck.

"Avery! You're drunk." Chloe snatched the puppy away.

I touched the scratches on my neck. I gave a pathetic laugh. "At least this dog actually touches me."

I went back to the mansion the next afternoon. A killer hangover pounded in my head.

The second I walked into the foyer, I saw Ryder in the living room.

He clearly hadn't slept at all. Dark circles shadowed his eyes. The air was thick with a heavy, suffocating, primal scent.

His pupils shrank the moment he saw me. A dark, feral gleam flashed in his black eyes. He locked onto the red scratches on my neck.

He stalked toward me. His towering frame radiated a possessiveness that almost drowned me.

"Who did that?" His voice was terrifyingly low.

I forced a smile and walked past him. I didn't want to explain. "I'm exhausted. Was up all night. I need sleep."

"Avery." He grabbed my wrist. His grip was shockingly strong.

"Next time you stay out all night," he gritted out, word by word, "you tell me."

I sneered and yanked my hand back. "Why? Would you even care?"

I marched upstairs without looking back. Behind me, I heard the sharp crack of a glass shattering in his bare hand.

But I didn't care anymore. I was ending this. I was done with having a husband who was just for show.

I slowly turned my head. The man holding me was Ryder's mirror image. But his energy was all wrong. And he was smirking right at me."Surprise!" he winked. "I'm the evil twin, Ryan."Me: "???"Ryder’s face was thunderous. He stalked over and physically snatched me out of Ryan's arms. "Ryan! What the hell is wrong with you!""Relax, little bro," Ryan chuckled, throwing his hands up in surrender. "I just wanted to see the woman who's got our big, bad Alpha crying on the internet."My face instantly caught fire. Wait. They all knew?"Just how many of you know about Midnight_Howler?" I demanded."The entire pack," Ryan grinned. "You're practically our internet-famous Luna."Ryder looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole. I just raised an eyebrow and stared him down."Well, well. It seems we need to have a little chat about your 'infidelity' accusations."Ryan wisely took that as his cue to exit, leaving the two of us staring at each other in the gym.I crossed my arms, smirkin

Ryder went completely silent. He looked like a giant wolf awaiting punishment.I poked a finger hard into his rock-solid abs, getting more annoyed by the second."Six months of marriage, and you completely iced me out," I said, tracing circles on his chest. "You had me thinking I was just a pawn for your business empire. A contract wife.""No!" He captured my lips frantically. "Never!""Then what was it?""Because..." He stared into my eyes with a tragic, desperate kind of love. "Because you're my one and only mate. A werewolf only gets one fated mate in a lifetime. I was terrified of losing control and hurting you.""And I was terrified that if you found out the truth, you really would run away to Europe."His raw honesty chipped away at my anger. "So, you've been in love with me this whole time?"He nodded, slumping in relief like a man on death row getting a pardon."For years," he admitted, brushing a thumb across my cheek. "Since the first time I laid eyes on you at that gala.""T

The next day, I tore the entire bedroom apart. Still no application. I knew it. Ryder definitely snatched it in the heat of the moment.I put on my best makeup and marched straight up to the top floor of Sterling Group. When I pushed open the heavy mahogany doors, Ryder was right in the middle of a board meeting.Every suit in the room turned to stare, but my eyes were locked dead on him."Sorry to interrupt," I said, strolling right up to him. "I need a word with my husband.""Take ten, gentlemen," Ryder ordered smoothly. "Go grab a coffee."Once the room cleared out, he poured me a glass of water. "What brings my gorgeous wife to the office?" he asked, throwing me a flawless, innocent smile."Did you see something on my nightstand?" I cut right to the chase."Your nightstand?" He tilted his head, acting like he was racking his brain. "Did you lose something important, sweetheart?"God, he was a good actor."Never mind." I set the glass down. "I probably just misplaced it.""If you l

My arrogant Alpha was on his knees. At my feet.He forced my hand flat against his scorching chest. I could feel his heart thrashing, trying to punch its way out of his ribcage."Feel that?" he rasped. "This is what you do to me."He dragged my hand down. He stopped over a vicious, jagged scar on his lower stomach. "I got this fighting for the Alpha title," he said, staring up at me with crazed devotion. "Just so I could have the right to stand beside you. To be worthy of you."That was it. That broke me.I yanked him into a kiss, pouring everything I had into it. He kissed back instantly, like a starving beast who hadn't eaten in a century. We were tearing at each other when I finally pushed him back, gasping for air."Those guys..." I panted against his lips. "It was just a misunderstanding. Chloe sent them. I didn't touch them."He froze. Two seconds later, the dark agony in his eyes vanished, replaced by pure, feral ecstasy."Really?" he trembled."Really."He snapped. He scooped m

Ryder was on the edge. He was fighting a violent shift. I didn't back down.Instead, I pushed his buttons on purpose. "Yeah, well, since my husband doesn't want me, I have to find my own fun."I turned back to the two male models lingering by the door. "Come on in. Don't just stand there."The air around Ryder went still. It was suffocating. The ice in his eyes didn't just shatter. It exploded into raw agony and blinding jealousy. His fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. Veins popped on his arms. Still, he held it in. He refused to snap in front of an audience."Avery, are you out of your mind?" one of his friends gasped."I'm perfectly sane." I marched the two models toward my study right in front of everyone. "Since I'm clearly unwanted here, I'm going to find someone who actually appreciates me."A low, guttural growl ripped from Ryder’s throat—like a wounded beast. I didn't even look back.I stepped into the study and locked the door behind us."Shirts off," I told the

My heart hammered in my chest. The shock morphed into a twisted thrill.I wasn't scared of this at all. Honestly, it was hot. This cold, suit-wearing billionaire was a wild beast on the inside. And he was dying for me to "tame" him!I wanted to storm downstairs, grab him by the tie, and tell him I knew everything.I wanted to show him I wasn't afraid. I wanted him to unleash his inner beast.I stood up, ready to go downstairs. Just then, the doorbell rang.I frowned. Who was here this late?I walked to the door and almost passed out.Unbelievable. Chloe had actually sent male models to my door. Two muscular blondes stood on my porch, their tight t-shirts straining against their chests."Hi, Ms. Avery." One flashed a charming smile. "Chloe sent us to help you 'unwind'.""What?!" I panicked. "Didn't Chloe tell you? I'm a married woman!""We know," the other guy winked. "Chloe mentioned your husband has some... performance issues. She said you needed a hand."My face burned hot enough to
