Chapter 2

Author: Chihuahua
"I’m busy! I need to focus on my work instead of wasting time on you! Why do you have to be so dramatic anyway? It’s just an accident! If you can’t walk, just stay in the hospital. What’s the point of coming home?"

With this in mind, I grabbed my phone and compiled a text to send her. "My only demands are that I will have custody of Cecil and that I get my half of our assets."

She replied immediately, "I have something important to do tomorrow. Quit acting up and wait for me to get home, alright?"

I waited for three days. Even when the doctor informed me that I could be discharged, Agnes was still nowhere to be seen.

As I sat inside the car and watched the building recede from view, a wave of memories flooded me.

Agnes and I first met in college. It did not take long before we fell in love.

During the first year of our marriage, she started her first business. She was unfortunately backstabbed by a close friend and saddled with debt afterward.

During that period, I worked three jobs a day to help her pay off her debts. During the nights, I would return home to do her laundry and cook for her.

Eventually, she started her second business venture, which turned out to be a success. I thought that was the turning point and that we would live a happy married life from then on.

However, everything changed when she cheated on me with Luther a year ago.

Shortly after I returned home, she returned from her "business trip" as well. She swiped a glance at the surgery report on the table and became upset.

Then, she shook me out of my nap and started nagging at me, "Did you go for surgery without telling me? Why didn’t you wait for me to come back?"

I had been suffering from insomnia during the past few days in the hospital. After finally getting some proper sleep, I was rudely awakened.

At this point, I was completely drained physically and mentally.

"Agnes, did you expect me to let my condition deteriorate for three more days and wait for you to come back before getting surgery done?"

Agnes was taken aback. Her expression softened ever so slightly. "Alright, I’ll forgive you this time. I need you to iron my blazer, the gray one."

I was slightly taken aback by the sudden demand. The reason she came home was not to be there for my surgery; instead, it was only because she had to attend a work event.

My phone's vibration shook me out of my thoughts. It was a reminder to feed the baby. I crawled out of bed and went to get the formula.

Agnes responded by angrily kicking the chair. "I regret ever marrying you. You don’t even take care of me!"

With that, she left and slammed the door behind her.

I ignored her and went to attend to a frightened Cecil, who was crying. It took more than half an hour for her to fall back asleep.

Then, I grabbed my phone and sent a text. "I need a divorce lawyer."

"Are you crazy? You’re getting divorced?"

The next morning, Agnes suddenly came home. She shot an icy look at me and reprimanded me severely, "Why didn't you remind me that it was your birthday yesterday?"

I stayed silent.

"Whatever. I bought you a gift." She handed me a watch.

It only took one look for me to tell that it was a very cheap watch, which was probably worth just over 5,000, at most.

Three days ago, she had included a watch worth more than 200,000 dollars in the million-dollar dowry she had given Luther.

The amount of effort revealed the love she had for me.

"Put on the watch. I'll cook you dinner later so we can celebrate."

"No thanks," I refused flatly. The deliberate overcompensation of gifts and forced companionship made me feel nothing but disgust.

Agnes turned grim when she noticed I was upset. "I’m already trying to please you. What else do you want? What are you so upset about?"

I looked her in the eye and spoke calmly, "I’m not upset."

Without a warning, she shoved me to the ground and stomped on me.

"I know what you're mad about! All I did was take a family picture with him. What’s wrong with that? His son's teacher told the students to share a family picture with the class. That’s why I had to take the picture with him!"

Then, she sighed exasperatedly. "Have you forgotten you were the one who upset him? So what if I got him a present? At least, I didn’t make you apologize to him!"

I just had surgery and wanted to avoid riling myself up with an argument. With that, I took a deep breath and yielded, "Yes, you're right."

As soon as I spoke, I received a notice from my company.

My supervisor had approved my resignation!

I did not bother calling the police. Instead, I pretended to be oblivious to what was happening, and then I went to look for my grandmother.Later on, I heard Agnes was not strong enough to outfight Luther. Humiliated, she got into a car and ran him over to get back at him.Luther's leg was left broken, and he was hospitalized for the better part of a month.Another fortnight later, Malone sent me a link to a livestream. It was Luther going manic and cussing out Agnes online. He seemed completely out of it and was speaking incoherently as if he had lost his mind."That damned woman almost crippled me! I hope she dies!"I didn’t report her to the police after she ran me over, but she didn't even bother to call me to check on me! I hope she goes bankrupt! Bankrupt! I curse her in the name of everything. I hope she goes bankrupt!"I'll place a hex on her! Bankrupt!"His repeated chants were turned into a joke online."You've lost it! You should see a psychiatrist.""Someone, plea

Agnes scowled and remarked in a repelled manner, "He doesn’t take care of himself. I don’t think he ever looks in the mirror to see how much weight he has gained."I grinned and mocked her right there, "You are… as scummy as you have always been."With that, I turned and got into Malone’s car without even sparing her a glance.Shortly after that, my lawyer called to assure me about the case, "Seventy percent of divorce cases are approved by the second hearing. Don’t worry about it. I’m confident about our chances."I smiled faintly. "Agnes should consider herself lucky if it was approved on the first hearing.""What do you mean?"I did not explain. What I was trying to say was that I was ready to fight back. That night, I sent a document I had been compiling for a while. The document contained all the evidence of Agnes' affair with Luther, from the first moments to the present day. There were twenty pages in total. This was the final nail in the coffin!I posted it on several

"Do you think you’re some kind of royalty just because you got yourself injured? Can’t you just be understanding? Besides, shouldn’t you blame yourself if your wound doesn’t heal? What does that have to do with me smoking?"I had assumed Agnes would be nicer to Luther, but now it seemed like Luther’s fate was history repeating itself. Her supposed sincerity seemed to be a ruse all along. All she did was torment the men she ended up with.I shook my head and lamented, "She's never changed. From the beginning to the end, all she cares about is herself. Nobody else matters to her."Malone continued swiping glances at their table.Throughout the meal, he made snarky comments about them. I had an impression that he was a great judge of character because everything he said about them was spot-on.After we finished our meal and asked the waiter for the bill, Agnes suddenly noticed me. She seemed taken aback when she noticed how I had restored my good looks and my youth as if time had re

I’d wager that it cost 10,000 dollars at most. It was nothing compared to the 200,000 watch she gave Luther. She even bought Luther a house this month. The apology was as insincere as they came."You splurge a million dollars for Luther but suddenly grow so stingy and wouldn’t even drop more than ten thousand for me."I shook my head dejectedly before continuing, "If I remember correctly, this is the watch that Luther didn't want anymore. Is that why you’re giving it to me?"A few days ago, I saw Luther making a post about his million-dollar dowry again.A netizen left a comment that said, "Your wife sure doesn’t mind splurging for the dowry. Has she always been so generous?"Luther responded with a picture of the mechanical watch Agnes was giving to me. "She was only going to give me this watch worth ten thousand dollars at first."I made sure to lecture her so she knows what a proper dowry looks like. The second time around, she wisened up and spent a million dollars as she s

A trace of hurt suddenly flashed across Agnes’ eyes. She sighed faintly before motioning, "Can you wait for me outside? We'll go home together later."Luther reluctantly walked out."Sign it." I pressed again.Agnes suddenly sat down beside the bed and took my hand. "Hubby, please forgive me. Can we just pretend like nothing happened and go back to the way things were? We have Cecil, don't we? We need to make sure she grows up in a healthy environment."I glanced at Luther, who was peeking into the ward from the doorway, then pursed my lips tightly. "What about him? Are you going to break things off with him?"A trace of reluctance appeared in her eyes the moment I said this. She clenched her teeth and vowed, "Here’s the plan. You can stay here on the south side of town, and I'll make arrangements for him to move to the north. Neither of you will ever have to see each other. Does that work?"Smack!I got up and slapped her across the face. I should have done this the very day s

I came around after what seemed like ages and was greeted by the sharp smell of disinfectant.Agnes was looking at me nervously. "Are you feeling better? Does it hurt anywhere?"I stared at her icily and felt sickened by her. "Have you signed the divorce papers? The divorce is still happening."Agnes was taken aback. She sighed heavily before expressing soberly, "Hubby, cut it out already. Think about it. You’re the one who starts an argument every time. You’re the one tearing our family apart."I smiled stiffly and fixed a look on her. She seemed like a stranger to me now."Do you think I'd have started any arguments if it weren’t for you messing around with other men? You can't even do the bare minimum and stay loyal. Now you’re putting the blame on me."Agnes did not feel a shred of guilt even when I confronted her directly. She shot a disdainful glare at me and retorted, "Oh, come on, affairs are as common as they come these days. Besides, I have both money and looks. How do
