Chapter 1

It was already afternoon. Agnes Carson still hadn’t called to offer an explanation.

Luther Greene was still constantly uploading new posts. He had just posted three pictures flaunting his million-dollar dowry, all of which rocked the internet.

The comment section was flooded instantly with people who did not hold back in expressing their envy.

That was when I spotted a comment from Agnes. "I accept your hand in marriage! In twenty years, we shall celebrate our anniversary with our children."

"I love you, my dearest wife."

My eyes felt scalded by their shameless, public display of affection. I went to the gallery on my phone and looked at the pictures of our daughter, Cecil Larke. I suppose Agnes had forgotten all about the fact that we had a one-year-old daughter together.

Last week was Cecil’s first birthday party. Agnes claimed she was busy with work and could not attend. Later on, I found out she skipped the party because she was trying to have Luther's son transferred to an elite school.

Then, the doctor stepped into the room and relayed an update to me, "Your condition is looking good. I’ll have your gall bladder surgery scheduled for tomorrow."

I was worried about leaving Cecil alone with the nurse for the surgery tomorrow.

After hesitating for several seconds, I ended up texting Agnes. "Do you think you can come home today? Something urgent came up on my end."

It took what felt like forever for her to reply, and when she did, her tone was very disgruntled. "You should know that I’m busy, so quit bothering me with something so trivial. Keep disturbing me, and we'll get a divorce!"

I stared stoically at the text. I had lost count of how many times she had threatened divorce.

It began after Luther showed up. Whenever I tried to express how seeing her flirt with Luther made me upset, she would threaten me with divorce like clockwork.

"We’re just friends. If you can't get over it, we can get divorced!"

I would inevitably apologize every time. This time around, I decided to give her what she wanted.

"I’m only texting you because I decided to have the surgery done earlier than planned. If it upsets you so much, I think we should get divorced."

A few seconds later, my phone rang.

Her voice sounded several measures gentler. "Did you get the surgery expedited? What time is it? I’ll come back and keep you company."

I frowned upon reading the reply, but still begrudgingly replied when I thought about Cecil, "It’s at two in the afternoon."

"Sure."

The next day, her phone was switched off and she could not be contacted. Left without a choice, I asked a friend for a favor and had him look after Cecil.

The surgery was completed in the evening. The doctor advised me to stay in the hospital for the next few days to monitor my condition.

Agnes never returned my calls. Meanwhile, Luther continued to flaunt their relationship on social media.

"I twisted my ankle slightly today, and she was so worried that she turned pale. She sped me to the clinic so I could get my ankle checked."

"She was going to take a flight back home today, but canceled her plans when I sprained my ankle."

"It was just a light sprain, but she refused to let me walk and insisted on getting me a wheelchair!"

I tapped on the post. It was a picture of Luther in a wheelchair with Agnes pushing him from behind.

I recalled an episode from when she had just started her business. At the time, I had gone on a business trip to meet her clients to secure a deal for her. Then, I got into an accident.

After being taken to the hospital, I was told that I had hurt my hip and that I needed to stay indoors and minimize movement for two weeks. I called Agnes and asked if she could buy me a wheelchair so that I could get home and nurse my wound.

She had sounded very upset on the phone.

I did not bother calling the police. Instead, I pretended to be oblivious to what was happening, and then I went to look for my grandmother.Later on, I heard Agnes was not strong enough to outfight Luther. Humiliated, she got into a car and ran him over to get back at him.Luther's leg was left broken, and he was hospitalized for the better part of a month.Another fortnight later, Malone sent me a link to a livestream. It was Luther going manic and cussing out Agnes online. He seemed completely out of it and was speaking incoherently as if he had lost his mind."That damned woman almost crippled me! I hope she dies!"I didn’t report her to the police after she ran me over, but she didn't even bother to call me to check on me! I hope she goes bankrupt! Bankrupt! I curse her in the name of everything. I hope she goes bankrupt!"I'll place a hex on her! Bankrupt!"His repeated chants were turned into a joke online."You've lost it! You should see a psychiatrist.""Someone, plea

Agnes scowled and remarked in a repelled manner, "He doesn’t take care of himself. I don’t think he ever looks in the mirror to see how much weight he has gained."I grinned and mocked her right there, "You are… as scummy as you have always been."With that, I turned and got into Malone’s car without even sparing her a glance.Shortly after that, my lawyer called to assure me about the case, "Seventy percent of divorce cases are approved by the second hearing. Don’t worry about it. I’m confident about our chances."I smiled faintly. "Agnes should consider herself lucky if it was approved on the first hearing.""What do you mean?"I did not explain. What I was trying to say was that I was ready to fight back. That night, I sent a document I had been compiling for a while. The document contained all the evidence of Agnes' affair with Luther, from the first moments to the present day. There were twenty pages in total. This was the final nail in the coffin!I posted it on several

"Do you think you’re some kind of royalty just because you got yourself injured? Can’t you just be understanding? Besides, shouldn’t you blame yourself if your wound doesn’t heal? What does that have to do with me smoking?"I had assumed Agnes would be nicer to Luther, but now it seemed like Luther’s fate was history repeating itself. Her supposed sincerity seemed to be a ruse all along. All she did was torment the men she ended up with.I shook my head and lamented, "She's never changed. From the beginning to the end, all she cares about is herself. Nobody else matters to her."Malone continued swiping glances at their table.Throughout the meal, he made snarky comments about them. I had an impression that he was a great judge of character because everything he said about them was spot-on.After we finished our meal and asked the waiter for the bill, Agnes suddenly noticed me. She seemed taken aback when she noticed how I had restored my good looks and my youth as if time had re

I’d wager that it cost 10,000 dollars at most. It was nothing compared to the 200,000 watch she gave Luther. She even bought Luther a house this month. The apology was as insincere as they came."You splurge a million dollars for Luther but suddenly grow so stingy and wouldn’t even drop more than ten thousand for me."I shook my head dejectedly before continuing, "If I remember correctly, this is the watch that Luther didn't want anymore. Is that why you’re giving it to me?"A few days ago, I saw Luther making a post about his million-dollar dowry again.A netizen left a comment that said, "Your wife sure doesn’t mind splurging for the dowry. Has she always been so generous?"Luther responded with a picture of the mechanical watch Agnes was giving to me. "She was only going to give me this watch worth ten thousand dollars at first."I made sure to lecture her so she knows what a proper dowry looks like. The second time around, she wisened up and spent a million dollars as she s

A trace of hurt suddenly flashed across Agnes’ eyes. She sighed faintly before motioning, "Can you wait for me outside? We'll go home together later."Luther reluctantly walked out."Sign it." I pressed again.Agnes suddenly sat down beside the bed and took my hand. "Hubby, please forgive me. Can we just pretend like nothing happened and go back to the way things were? We have Cecil, don't we? We need to make sure she grows up in a healthy environment."I glanced at Luther, who was peeking into the ward from the doorway, then pursed my lips tightly. "What about him? Are you going to break things off with him?"A trace of reluctance appeared in her eyes the moment I said this. She clenched her teeth and vowed, "Here’s the plan. You can stay here on the south side of town, and I'll make arrangements for him to move to the north. Neither of you will ever have to see each other. Does that work?"Smack!I got up and slapped her across the face. I should have done this the very day s

I came around after what seemed like ages and was greeted by the sharp smell of disinfectant.Agnes was looking at me nervously. "Are you feeling better? Does it hurt anywhere?"I stared at her icily and felt sickened by her. "Have you signed the divorce papers? The divorce is still happening."Agnes was taken aback. She sighed heavily before expressing soberly, "Hubby, cut it out already. Think about it. You’re the one who starts an argument every time. You’re the one tearing our family apart."I smiled stiffly and fixed a look on her. She seemed like a stranger to me now."Do you think I'd have started any arguments if it weren’t for you messing around with other men? You can't even do the bare minimum and stay loyal. Now you’re putting the blame on me."Agnes did not feel a shred of guilt even when I confronted her directly. She shot a disdainful glare at me and retorted, "Oh, come on, affairs are as common as they come these days. Besides, I have both money and looks. How do
