Chapter 1

"Faith, congratulations! This time, your success rate of guiding us to awaken our elemental abilities struck 100% again!"

"Yeah! As long as Faith’s here, our Vanguard Base has the highest number of awakened in the entire Federation of Survivors!"

Surrounded by the crowd, I felt a flicker of disorientation.

The scent at the tip of my nose wasn’t the putrid rot of the zombie pit but the sharp, sterile smell of disinfectant from the lab.

I instinctively reached for my arms and legs. They were whole. They hadn’t been broken. There was no bone-deep agony from being torn apart by zombies.

"Hold on!"

Just as General Brett Thomas was about to announce me as this month’s top researcher, my so-called best friend, Ruby Barrett, suddenly stepped forward. Her expression was timid, almost fragile.

"General, actually… this guidance plan was mine."

The moment I looked at her innocent, harmless face, it hit me. I had come back to the exact day Ruby first claimed she’d mastered the Spark of Dominion.

My fingers tightened around the notebook in my hand, my knuckles turning pale.

Whispers of doubt rippled through the room, and Ruby’s eyes instantly reddened.

"If you’re saying it was yours, then show us. Demonstrate it right now." I forced down the hatred surging inside me and pointed toward Morgan Grant, an earth-element user, who was hovering on the brink of awakening, yet was stuck at a bottleneck.

"His mental threshold is unstable. Since you have this Spark of Dominion, go ahead and help him break through."

Ruby froze for a split second, then quickly composed herself. She stepped forward with confidence, placing her hand against the man’s forehead in a practiced gesture.

At the same time, I felt it—faint, subtle, but unmistakable.

Something was brushing against my thoughts. Just as I expected. Ruby was reading my mind.

In my past life, this was the moment I’d panicked internally, running calculations over and over in my head, terrified something would go wrong.

She had heard everything, turning it into the foundation of her performance.

This time, I didn’t expose her. Not yet. Instead, I narrowed my eyes slightly. I had already tracked Morgan’s data for an entire week.

The truth was, I’d long since drafted the outline of a solution. I just hadn’t completed the final stage of clinical validation.

In my mind, I pulled up that unfinished plan and rapidly filled in the final step.

Almost at the exact same second, Ruby’s eyes lit up. She began muttering under her breath, "I feel it… start from the grounding point…"

As her hand moved, Morgan, who had been grimacing in pain, suddenly jolted. The surrounding earth elements instantly calmed, gathering around him to form a thick layer of armor.

"It… it worked?!" he shouted, stunned. "I broke through! Thank you, Assistant Barrett! You’re incredible!"

"Oh, my God! It really is the Spark of Dominion! She doesn’t even need calculations. Just one touch, and she knows exactly how to guide it!"

Applause and cheers erupted around us in an instant.

I turned back, catching only a glimpse of that familiar figure being swallowed by a tide of black.Even in her final moments, Ruby’s eyes, which were filled with venom, remained locked on the departing vehicle. In my past life, she pushed me into a pit of zombies. In this life, she reaped what she had sown.Inside the vehicle, the air was still thick with shock. Commander Morris pulled me tightly into his arms."Faith, are you hurt?" His low voice brushed against my ear.I looked up, meeting his deep, piercing gaze. The fear and urgency in his eyes were unmistakably real. For a moment, time seemed to stand still."Thank you," I said softly.Commander Morris released me, his voice low. "No. I should be thanking you. If something had happened to you, I don’t know what I would’ve done."The tension between us felt out of place against the blood-soaked chaos, yet strangely compelling. At last, the vehicle broke free from the encircling horde and arrived at an open, abandoned quarr

There was trouble on all sides. If we wanted to move that awakened individual, we’d have to break through the zombie horde."I’ll go." I stepped forward without hesitation. "I’m the only one who can guide his spatial ability and stabilize his energy fluctuations.""No. It’s too dangerous." Commander Morris grabbed my wrist, the heat of his palm searing against my skin. "The outside is swarming with zombies. How are you going to protect him on your own?"He turned his gaze to Zachary and Ruby, who were being restrained on the ground. "You said everything you did was for humanity. Then here’s your chance to make it right."Zachary and Ruby’s eyes lit up instantly.Even with the zombie horde outside, having Commander Morris, who was an elite lightning user, there was still a chance. It was far better than being executed or thrown into a death squad."I’ll go! I’ll drive!" Zachary scrambled up, practically tripping over himself in his urgency.Ruby shot me a venomous glance before

"During my awakening, my consciousness was blurred, but I could sense two distinct mental forces." Commander Morris pointed at Ruby. "One of them was greedy and frantic, darting around like a thief. It nearly drove me into a complete breakdown."Then he turned to me, and the coldness in his eyes softened instantly. "The other never directly touched me, but that voice was calm and precise, like a beacon guiding me."If Faith hadn’t taken over at the end, I’d already be dead."Commander Morris turned back, his gaze icy as it landed on General Thomas. "General Thomas, this is the Mother of Elements you chose?"Cold sweat poured down Brett’s face as he shot Ruby a furious glare. "Ruby! What do you have to say for yourself?! You dared to deceive the base?!""N-no… that’s not true… Zachary, help me…" Ruby clutched at Zachary’s pant leg in desperation. His face darkened. Without hesitation, he kicked her away."Get off me! You liar!" He pointed at her, righteous fury in his voice. "I tr

This method was something I had paid for with my life in my past life. Every single step was etched into my memory with absolute clarity.Inside the isolation chamber, Commander Morris, who was on the brink of losing control, paused when he heard my voice."Three inches below your left rib—that’s your energy blockage point. Use the lightning to break through it. It’s going to hurt. Endure it."Commander Morris let out a muffled grunt, but he followed my instructions. The chaotic black-red lightning that had been lashing wildly began to move in a controlled pattern around his body."Even at the elite level, you still have to obey the law of energy conservation. Step three: release the excess charge."Boom!Commander Morris’s eyes snapped open. The blood-red color was gone, replaced by a brilliant violet-gold glow. With a single wave of his hand, a bolt of lightning, condensed to its absolute limit, pierced through half a meter of reinforced insulation and shot straight into the

Outside the isolation chamber, a deathly silence fell.Everyone stood frozen, mouths open, staring at Ruby in disbelief.Even Commander Morris, who was teetering on the edge of a full meltdown, paused for a split second at her shout."Left hand, right hand, slow motion?" General Thomas roared, "Ruby, what are you doing?! Is that supposed to be a guidance protocol?!"Only after shouting did Ruby seem to realize what she had just said. She clapped a hand over her mouth, her face draining of all color. What was happening?Just now, she had clearly sensed that exact phrase flash through my mind, and my mental state had been unwavering, completely certain. It had to be the key guidance formula. So why did it come out sounding like a workout chant?!"N-no… that’s not it!" Ruby stammered, panic setting in, cold sweat beading on her forehead. "This… this is an ancient resonance technique! It uses specific sound frequencies to stabilize the lightning elements!"She babbled excuses whil

I pulled my hand free, a solemn, almost tragic expression settling over my face. "Zachary, you’re right. In the face of humanity’s survival, what does personal love even matter?"I turned and looked at Ruby Barrett, who stood there with guilt written all over her face. "Ruby, since everyone thinks you two are the better match, then I’ll step aside and make it happen. I hope you’ll give humanity the strongest possible child. Don’t let everyone’s expectations down.""Faith..." Ruby’s eyes filled with tears, visibly moved. "Thank you! You’re incredible! Zachary and I will never forget your sacrifice!"Zachary let out a breath of relief. "Don’t worry, Faith. When we have a child, we’ll have them call you their godmother."The entire room erupted into applause.I stood in the corner, watching the pair being elevated onto a pedestal, a cold gaze in my eyes. The party didn’t last long.Three days later, the most critical day arrived. It was the destined day when the base’s Supreme Lead
