Nalini

The house was too quiet.

It shouldn’t have felt that way — not with the fire softly crackling in the hearth, the golden light spilling through the tall windows, and the faint hum of the city somewhere beyond. But silence had a weight, and tonight it pressed against me from all sides.

Myron had been gone since morning.

He hadn’t said where he was going. Just that he had to take care of something. His tone had been clipped, his movements restless — like he was holding something fragile inside and didn’t dare let it show. I remembered how he’d looked standing by the door, jaw tight, eyes shadowed with thoughts I couldn’t read.

And then he’d left without breakfast, without even a backward glance.

That had been hours ago.

Now the sky outside had turned to bruised purple, the last traces of sunlight dying behind the Silvermist Ridge. I sat on the couch, hugging a pillow to my chest, trying not to imagine all the terrible things that could’ve happened.

Maybe he’s with his father, I t

Nalini Maxine hesitated. “Where?”“Anywhere that’s not here.”We slipped out through the side gate, walking until the noise of the school faded behind us. The afternoon sun was warm against our skin as we made our way down a dirt path that led to a small clearing near the river — a place we used to go as kids when we wanted to hide from the world.Maxine sank onto the grass, pulling her knees to her chest. I sat beside her, watching the sunlight ripple across the water. The quiet was a balm after everything that had happened — but it also made it harder to hold back what I was feeling.“I don’t even know who I am anymore,” I admitted softly. “Every time I think I’ve got my life under control, something happens and I just… fall apart again.”Maxine turned to me, her eyes tired but kind. “Did you guys kiss?”My heart stuttered. “How did you—?”She gave a weak smile. “Nalini, you’ve been off all morning. You look like someone stole your soul.”A shaky laugh escaped me. “Maybe they did.”

  • Mine to keep, mine to break    41. He's gone

Nalini I couldn’t stop thinking about his lips. The ghost of that kiss clung to me like smoke — faint but suffocating. Every time I blinked, I saw his eyes again, the look of regret, the tremor in his voice when he said my name. It should have meant nothing. I wanted it to mean nothing. But my heart hadn’t gotten the memo.By the time I reached my locker that morning, I felt like I was standing on quicksand — guilt dragging me under, confusion weighing me down. I slammed the metal door shut and pressed my forehead against it, trying to breathe. What was wrong with me?Timothy had been nothing but kind, steady, patient. He’d saved Maxine last night. He’d treated me like I was worth something when no one else did. He deserved my attention, my trust — maybe even my heart someday. Not Myron.Never Myron. But then why did my pulse still race when I thought about him? Why did I still feel that pull — that maddening, magnetic thing that tied me to him even when he hurt me?I let out a shaky

  • Mine to keep, mine to break    40. Pushing me away

Nalini After everything that happened at the spring dance, my mind refused to quiet down. Maxine’s sobs still echoed in my ears. Timothy’s protectiveness, his eyes full of anger and worry. And Myron… Myron had hovered at the edge of it all, silent and stormy, until I’d told him to stay away.I thought that would be the end of it.But now, as I stood in the quiet hallway after class, I could feel his presence before I even saw him. That distinct hum in my veins, that charged air that only came when he was near.I turned, and there he was—leaning casually against the doorframe like he hadn’t been the reason my entire world kept tilting off balance. His hair was slightly tousled, his uniform crisp, but his eyes… his eyes were softer than I’d ever seen them.“Nalini,” he said quietly.I swallowed, clutching my books closer to my chest. “What do you want, Myron?”He hesitated, pushing off the wall and taking a slow step toward me. “I wanted to check on you. After… everything that happened

Nalini The next morning felt heavy. The air itself was still, as if the world hadn’t yet recovered from last night’s ugliness. My body ached, but my mind wouldn’t rest. Maxine’s sobs kept replaying in my head — the way her voice cracked when she said he forced himself on me.I couldn’t shake it off.By the time I got to school, a strange energy buzzed through the halls. People were whispering before I even entered the main building. I could feel the tension vibrating in the air like static. Then I heard it—Kevin’s name. When I turned the corner toward the courtyard, the crowd had already gathered. Students stood in circles, phones half raised, faces bright with gossip and fear. In the middle of it all, Timothy stood with his shoulders squared and his jaw tight, facing Kevin.Kevin looked disheveled and angry, but there was something smug in the twist of his mouth. “You’re making a scene, Rudrah,” he spat, his voice carrying over the murmurs. “Don’t think being the Alpha’s son gives y

  • Mine to keep, mine to break    38. A monster, not a mate

Nalini The corridors were dimly lit, shadows spilling across the marble floors like spilled ink. My heart pounded so violently it felt like it would tear out of my chest. Maxine’s voice still echoed in my head—the laughter we’d shared earlier, the sparkle in her eyes when she’d teased me about Myron’s letter. She didn’t deserve this.“Maxine!” I shouted, my voice cracking as I reached the east wing. The music from the dance had faded into a dull, distant hum. The air here was colder, heavier—like it carried the scent of danger itself. Then I heard it. A muffled cry. A sound I’ll never forget.I followed it around the corner and froze.Maxine was pinned against the wall by Kevin—her supposed mate. His hand was gripping her wrist painfully, his other hand clamped over her mouth. Her glittering dress was torn at the strap, her eyes wild and terrified as she struggled against him.For a heartbeat, I couldn’t breathe. Then something inside me snapped.“Get your hands off her!” I screamed,

  • Mine to keep, mine to break    37. She's not Nalini

Timothy Father had summoned me several mornings ago. When Alpha Reuben Rudrah called, you didn’t keep him waiting, no matter how much you wanted to. I’d been halfway through my training drills, sweat dripping down my spine, when his Beta, Nolan, appeared at the door with that stiff, expectant look that meant I was to stop whatever I was doing and report immediately. The Alpha King’s study was always cold—too big, too silent, every surface polished to perfection. Father was behind his massive oak desk, signing something with the same sharp, efficient grace he used to command armies. He didn’t look up when I entered.“Father,” I said, bowing my head slightly. He finally glanced at me, eyes cool and assessing. “Timothy,” he greeted, gesturing to the chair opposite him. “Sit.”I obeyed, already bracing myself. Conversations with him were never casual—they were lessons, orders, or reprimands.“I heard about your brother’s little rebellion,” he began, voice smooth, controlled. “Myron’s fin
